Featuring Chud and Miremel
- Enjoy**
Location: Mossflower Woods, near the River Moss
In the warm midafternoon light, two otterscouts are revisiting a long path that they found a few days ago.
Miremel turns to her brother, Chud. "Should we follow the trail again? Be serious this time."
Chud laughs. "Okay, okay, okay..."
Miremel laughs too, though softly. "Come on. We now somebeast made these tracks, and I want to find who did! Got any hotroot?" She leans closer to Chud and searches for the canteen.
Chud tosses the canteen to her. He looks closer at the tracks. "No pawmarks anywhere...No claws..."
Miremel catches the canteen and takes a swig. "Ahh... That's good hotroot. Then again, it always is. No claws? Are you sure there's no claws? And what do you mean, no pawmarks? Like..say, a snake?" She peers closer, only to realize that her brother is right. "Oh, sorry." The ottermaid looked embarrassed.
Chud nods. "It's okay...But we've got a problem."
Miremel straightens and looks worried. "What? Why? Chud, what's the problem?" She even sounds worried. "What kind of creatures made the tracks?"
Chud looks closely at the tracks. "I already said...'S a snake. That's the problem. It might be venomous, and even if s'not, it's big enough to do some serious damage. We gotta find it."
Miremel gasps in horror. "But..Chud..you didn't tell me!
Chud shrugs. "Sorry...Well, I told yer now. Enough talk. We got a snake to hunt."
Miremel takes a deep breath and tries to sound brave. "You're right. Enough talk. I just hope it's not venomous." At this though she shudders and darts closer to her otter brother.
Chud laughs. "I'll protect you. But get your weapons ready." He skillfully unsheaths his dirk, and experimentally twirls his sling.
Miremel glares at him. "I don't need you to protect me. I just feel better when I'm closer to you, that's all." Though she is slightly annoyed, she draws her weapons and holds them tightly at her side. Her voice drops to a whisper. "Oh, Chud, I'm sorry. You've no need to say it's okay. I know it is. But...where do you think the snake is?" Now Miremel's voice trails away
Chud hunches over the trail. "Alright, follow me."
Chud moves along the riverbank.
Miremel moves silently after him, her eyes darting nervously from side to side. "If it's a water snake, I am going to go crazy. Sorry, I'm just creeped out by snakes." She takes a step away from the water and hurries after Chud. "Wait! Did you hear that?" Miremel calls softly, as though she feared somebeast would hear her.
Chud freezes. "What?" he urgently whispers
Miremel freezes also. "Like..Like a slithering sound. Like something was moving through the mud." She keeps her voice down like her brother. Suddenly Miremel gasps. "Li-Like a snake."
Chud twirls his loaded sling. "Where?"
Miremel points urgently at the the edge of the water, where the sand and water connects. "There." She still whispers, and her eyes still dart from side to side as though she expected an attack at any second. "Wait! Chud, listen! Do you hear it?" Miremel peers around the shallows. "Sounds like it's getting closer....."
Chud snarls quietly. "Not for long it's not." He hurls a pebble from the sling to where Miremel was pointing. It hits something in the water with a wet WHUMP!
Miremel though scared, creeps to the edge of the water and looks down. "Chud, I think we have a problem. As in, I found our snake!" She stares fearfully down at it, rooted to the spot. "No." Miremel whispers this one word.
Chud looks over to her. "No, what?" He quietly sprints over to her side.
Miremel can't take her eyes off the hideous creature. "No, as in, don't let it kill me." She tries to move away, but she finds she is so scared that she can't move. Miremel watches the snake move closer and closer. She closes her eyes, as iif expecting pain at any second.
Chud stands there, shocked...And angry. Suddenly a primal roar rips from his throat. "STREEEAAAMBAAAATTLE!!!" He charges over to Miremel, and knocks her out of harm's way. Then, with his loaded sling, he batters away at the snake's foul head as it rises from the water. WHAM WHAM WHAM THWACK WHAM
Miremel stares, terrified, as Chud takes on the massive creature. She chokes out a frightened cry. "Chud, no!" She charges next to her brother to help him. "Look out!"
The snake hisses. "SSSDeath! Die, ssssstreamdogsssss!" Chud whacks its skull with his rudder. "Ar, sharrup, snakeface." Whack! Whack! "Gimme a paw here, sis."
Miremel helps her brother as she shouts, "I would like to see you die first, you slithering creep!"
Chud's eyes are cold as dead stars as he smashes the snake's head.
Miremel whaacks the advancing snake with her rudder. THWACK! Her dark brown eyes match her brothers, cold and angry. Miremel wants to make the snake angry so she says, "I bet you couldn't beat me or my brother, creep! You'll never kill us if we can help it!" The young otter throws a hard pebble from her sling. "Down, you creeping thing!"
The snake hisses angrily. "Foolisssssh ssssstreamdog!" He opens his jaws and strikes at Chud, who dodges swiftly. "Watch out, sis!"
Miremel darts out of the way of the snake
Chud quickly jumps behind the snake, into the water, standing with one leg on either side of it. He suddenly draws his dirk, and holds it in a reverse grip.
Miremel moves from side to side as the snake's head follows her. "Ha! You couldn't get me even if you tried!" She spots her brother and cries, "Hurry, Chud!"
Chud growls, and stabs downward into the back of the snake's skull. "HAH!"
The snake hisses weakly and slumps over. "sss...no..sssss"
iremel springs away from the water and kneels down, panting. "Good timing." She narrows her eyes from exhaustion and studies her brother. "If you hadn't killed it, Chud, I don't think we would be here right now." Miremel climbs to her feet and hugs her brother. She murmurs into his ear, "You're somethin', Chud."
Chud smiles. "Thanks, sis." He hugs her with his strong arms, then lets go and takes her by the paw. "C'mon, let's head home."
The pair run off to Camp Willow, laughing.
