A way to stop the kitten's revenge

RW Abbey: Kitchen Yard

Boasting a decent view of the Abbey's orchards and gardens, this

space is mostly a work area, displaying well trampled grass and the

occasonal bare spot. An especaily worn spot is the path that leads

between the kitchen gardens and the vineyards.

From one end of the kitchen yard to the other, the space is nearly

filled by the tremendous gnarled trunk of an ancient apple tree,

roots and branches and boughs trimmed off and piled alongside for

later use. A deep groove of mud-churned sod and torn grass leads

back to the orchard, from where the fallen tree must have come.

There are also a variety of workshops around the edge of the yard,

the wood-shop, the cooper for making barrels. The small smithy

where the abbey's tools are made, the potters kiln and the brewery.

Benar the squirrel. Ferdinand the ferret. Chud the otter. Zork the badger.

Benar is in the Kiln, busy working away at moulding some clay, shaping it into a bowl as he spins the potters wheel with the simple motion of one foot. His habit is hanging on a peg nearby and he is dressed in simple trousers and a long apron as he works away./

Ferdinand has left Blisa with some other Dibbuns and some Order Sisters so he can have a private talk with the Abbey Elder. He walks slowly towards the kiln, his arms crossed and head bowed. He stops in the doorway and watches the squirrel for a few moments, then softly says, "Good day."

Benar looks up and smiles at the young ferret, "Ferdinand good day, how can I help?" he asks, fingers still moulding the clay, shifting and kneading and working it gewntly into shape as he continues to spin the wheel. "Has someone sent you with a message?"

Ferdinand shakes his head. "No, Thir. Blitha and I haven't gone back to Ferravale yet becauthe I need to thpeak with you. It'th about Blitha. The'th met a former follower of Thtormfeather, and the wantth to theek revenge on him. I don't know what to do. I've lectured her and talked to her and everything, but nothing hath worked."

Benar frowns at this and nods as he listens to the young ferret, "I see, the path of revenge is a dark one. No beast should ever walk it, not a beast as young as yourself and Blisa..." he tilts his head, looking at Ferdinand, he sets his clay aside and smiles softly, "Also Blisa is much too young to seek vengeance on anyone, you are both dibbuns. If you tried you would not be able to harm one of the StormFeather birds.... they would likely over-come you."

Ferdinand looks offended. "I'm almotht 7 and a half theathonth old. And it'th Ragg, Nightbreath'th apprentice." he sighs. "I with I knew what to do....Ragg doethn't wan tot cauthe problemth. I feel kind of bad for him."

Benar blinks, "Ragg? Yes... he is a good beast or trying to be." he wipes his paws clean then takes one of Ferdinand's hands, "YOu are indeed 7 seasons old but you are still not old enough. But Ragg has rejected his old ways and embraced peace Ferdinand... that is the way of Redwall and Ferravale, to let all who wish to live in peace, to reject their old ways to do so.... we cannot, must not allow that belief to be stopped."

Ferdinand stares at the squirrel. "I don't want revenge on him! It'th Blitha who doeth! I need thomethign to help me get through to Blitha on why revenge ith bad!! The won't lithten to me! And I'm not too young! I've...." he stops and swallows. No. That's none of Benars' concern. "Pleathe jutht tell me thomething I can tell Blitha to convince her that revenge is wrong."

Benar closes his eyes and thinkss, "Revenge will make Blisa as bad as the StormFeather, as bad as Marek, it will make her a vermin creature. Once she kills one beast in revenge others will follow until the darkness consumes the light that is her and she becomes the sort of beast who the Champion of Redwall and all who stand for peace will stop."

Chud trots in. "Darkness don't always mean evil, mate," he puts in. "Light can be just as bad. It's not light and dark, but good and evil that you think of. Right and wrong. But well said nonetheless."

Ferdinand looks shaken, but he nods. "Thank you." he jumps as the otter appears in the scene. He now looks nervous, but he nods. "Good day."

Benar glances at Chud from his seat in the Kiln and sighs, "And wisdom too by learning what a conversation is about first is also advisable Chud. I am trying to help Ferdinand talk Blisa down from the path of vengeance she is starting to get obssessed with." He smiles at Ferdinand and squeezes his shoulder, "I am sure you can talk her out of it Ferdinand, I hope my words have helped some and if you need more advice you know where to find me."

Zork walks into the area where Benar and the others are, he starts to head over to them but is drawn to the small smithy area and walks that direction, the bandage is off his leg but he still has the one on his elbow to shoulder of his left arm. He grins a little.

Ferdinand swallows and makes his escape, suddenly strangely nervous. He must find Blisa dn take her home to Ferravale....
