Salamandastron: Infirmary
- -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Salamandastron *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
This is the infirmary for the long patrol. This room is one of the most
well lit rooms in the whole of Salamandastron, with several candles placed
strategically along the shelves and cupboards. Many wooden beds line the
walls of this room, each outfitted with impeccably clean white linen
sheets. This unfortunately limits the walking space in this room. Where
there are not beds there are shelves and cabinets that hold a variety of
different medical equipment, mostly needles and bandages. A single stone
sink is firmly lodged into one of the counters. The sink is not fancy, in
fact it is quite awkward. It is a necessity, nonetheless. An open closet
is in the corner of the room, storing a surplus of compact cots, in the
unusual case of mass injuries. The room usually has several nurse hares in
it, roaming around tending to various injuries.

[Out] to Level One [Herb] Room
Hares: Ava, female. Felicity 'Lissie', female.
Tending to the infirmary is Ava who is currently dressed in her scrubs. As she wanders from patient to patient, she ticks off a few marks on her paperwork to ensure proper medication was dispensed and bandages was changed. It seems that the newest batch of recruits are accident prone. Rubbing at her eyes, she gives a bit of a yawn before heading back to her station and filing her forms.
The door opens, and an auburn head peeks in. Oh, good, someone she knows! Felicity heads over to the other haremaid, limping slightly. "Corporal Ava, Sah?" She is wearing her service uniform, and there's a small spot of something brown on the shoulder. It looks like dried, then washed out, blood.
Ava glances over to the girl and rises upwards. "Good afternoon Felicity. What happened?" She asks as she pulls a chair over for the young girl to sit down instead of hobbling about the room. Her eyes gives a quick once over her, then spies the blood. "Yours?"
Felicity sits in the chair with a sigh and holds out her ankle. "I had started out on my Patrol on Saturday and I met up with a caravan. We were attacked by bandits. I sprained me ankle kicking a vixen bandit." She glances at the blood spot and nods, pointing to her ear. "Aye. An arrow found me, but it's not too bad, wot." There's a small nick in the outside of her left ear, about mid-way up. The ankle she's holding out, her right one, is still slightly swollen. "A mouse in Halyard helped me, Sah, but it still hurts, so I thought I should have it looked at."
"Just call me Ava. And, you are lucky to be alive at all. An arrow to the head is dangerous. Were you with others or were you buy yourself? You did report this to the Major, yes?" Ava asks as she kneels down in front of her and gently tests the ankle, then heads over to one of the cabinets and opens it up to pull out a freeze pack and some tape. "Just a sprain, nothing is broken. You need to stay off this for a few days until the swelling goes down." As she wraps the pack around the ankle, she gives a smile. "Were they arrested?"
Felicity hesitates. She's never been told to call a commanding officer by just their name before. How is she supposed to deal with this? "Ah....alright, then." She winces as her ankle is checked out, then watches the healer curiously. "I was with the caravan, S--ah, Ava." So weird. It feels so wrong. "I always Patrol alone. And it just nicked my ear." She resists the urge to pull her ankle away. It hurts more than she's letting on. "I helped them drive off the bandits. They all either ran away, were knocked out, or killed, wot. And I filled out a report and handed it in, as usual." She refrains from adding that she neglected to mention in the report that she had gotten injured. What the Major doesn't know won't hurt him, right? Right.
"I see. I am surprised that you were not with a mentor or a ranking officer while on duty. Just be careful" Ava says as she ensures that the ice pack is firm upon the ankle. "You are on desk duty for the next two days to monitor the swelling." She says as she scribbles on a form. "I will get you some pain medicine as well that you need to take with your meals. Also make sure that you touch base with me later to make sure that you are improving." She peeks up at the younger girl over her paperwork. "Understand?"
Felicity's jaw drops open. "W...wot?" She rests her head on her paw, resigning herself to her fate. "I....I understand, S....Ava." She looks thoroughly miserable....not just because of having desk duty (she doesn't even know how to do that), but because she feels that it would hurt too much to explain to the Corporal why she's allowed to go out on solo patrols.
"Believe me, I know. I hate doing paperwork all day also, but, it is not so bad. Two days will fly by as long as you stay off the foot and take the pills and just relax a bit. You're a runner, right? That means you need to be able to run. You can't do that on a busted foot." Ava says with amusement.
Felicity looks up and sighs. "I understand. It's just......I have a baby sistah. Julia. How can I take care of her if I'm stuck havin' to stay sittin' all day?" She stares up at the other doe despairingly, hoping that she already knows about her parents, so Lissie wont' have to bring the pain up again by explaining it all to the healer.
"We do have nurse maids that can help with that type of stuff. It is just two days, Felicity. How else are you taking care of her when you are out on patrol? Someone watches her, right?" Ava asks as she hops up to her feet. "If you want, I can always just issue you bed rest and you can stay at your room instead of working the desk."
Burying her head in her paws, Lissie just shakes her head. Not a helpful suggestion. "I....ah....I understand." She looks back up, struggling to shove the tears that are forming in her blue eyes back down, out of sight, where they belong. "It's just.....I feel bad...not spending time...with 'er....whenever I'm here. I'm....we're the only family we.....'ave left...."
Furrowing her brows, Ava says, "Felicity, it is two days, not two years. Snap out of it. If you can't hack this life, then quit the patrol and move to Halyard and have whatever life you wish. This is the job that you signed up for." Giving another scribble, she says, "You /injured yourself/. What do you want me to tell you? Go back out there on a busted foot and walk it off? This is not my first day on the job as a healer. I know that your ankle is a wreck and that you can't work on it. Just take some time off while it heals then go back to work." Rubbing a hand down her face, she ambles back towards her desk to fish out the pain medication and put it into a bottle. "You will be fine. Trust me."
Felicity stays silent and just nods. She watches the other hare do whatever she's doing, sadness shadowing her face, making her look older than she really is. When she deems that the Healer is finished dosing out the medication, she quietly holds out a paw so she can take it.
Ambling back over with the bag, Ava holds it out to her, then furrows her brows. "Alright, tell me what is really going on?" She asks as she tucks a stray strand of hair away from her face. "Obviously something is bothering you and I can listen if you need to talk about it."
Felicity goes to take the bag and shakes her head, her lip trembling. She ducks her head and stares at the bag in her paws, a tear trickling down her nose.
Ava lets out a heavy breath and drags a chair over and takes a seat next to her. Reaching out she wraps an arm around her and pulls her close. "Look, maybe I was a bit harsh. I know I have my own share of issues. What got you so wound up for?"
Felicity starts to shake her head slowly, then just continues to shake her head as more tears flow down her cheeks. "I....I....I miss my p...p...parents an'....an Davie." she bursts out in sobs and goes to lean against the other hare, the torrent of tears she's been holding in since Saturday spilling out like water from a broken dam.
Ava lets out a heavier breath as she wraps her other arm about her for a hug. "Yeah. I get it. I miss a lot of beasts in my life as well, Felicity, but we can't dwell on the past as best we can. We gotta buck up and make the most of what we have in the here and now, you know what I mean?" Giving her a bit of a squeeze, she lets her go. "You want to get dinner or something later tonight and be normal for a few hours?"
Felicity's sobs calm down some as she hears what the Healer has to say. After thinking for a few moments, she shrugs noncommittally. "I...guess so. Sure." She starts wiping her cheeks on her sleeve, and offers the other haremaid a small smile. "Thanks."
"Cool. I will snag dinner for us then and meet at your place when I get off my shift. I'll make sure to get something for your sister as well." Smoothing down her scrubs, Ava heads to a cabinet and reaches in to take out a crutch, then hands it over to her. "Here, just make sure to keep the weight off your foot. Okay? If it gets worse just tell me."
Felicity smiles softly as she accepts the crutch. "Alright. Thank you. But...." how to word this..... "Are you sure that it'll be alright if we become friends? I mean, I always thought that unrelated hares of different ranks we discouraged from becomin' friends." She looks at the crutch and goes to test it out to make sure it works with her longer than average arms.
"Of course we can become friends. How else are we supposed to be a brotherhood and to watch each other's backs proper if we don't know each other? There is more to the patrol than saluting and marching. Just relax, you will do fine." Ava says as she waves to another patient, then heads over towards their bed. "Take care, Felicity."
Smiling, Lissie stands, supporting herself entirely with her good leg and the crutch. "Aye, you too, wot! Thanks again!" She manages to get out of the Infirmary, bag slung over her shoulder, getting to understand moving about with a crutch with surprising speed. Her smile stays on her face for the rest of her day. She has a friend.
