(OOC: Managed to get in an RP between Monty and Adrian, so here it is! )
The forest is pretty thick, and only growing thicker the further north the group presses. The path has grown pretty overgrown at points, however, indicating that not many beasts make this journey these days. If it wasn't marked clearly on the old map he carries, Adrian would never believe there's a village ahead. They're less than a day away, now, if his estimation is correct. Falling back a bit, letting Lossow go on ahead, Adrian falls in alongside his friend, Monty. "Mmm, y've been quiet, mate. Coin f'r yahr thoughts?"
Monty had indeed spent most of this particular journey ruminating in his thoughts and letting the otter two take the reigns, hanging back a little while the others forge on ahead. Staring at the ground as he ambles his way along behind Adrian and Lossow, the hare jumps in surprise as suddenly Adrian is there beside him. "Gah!" He blinkblinks at his friend, regaining his composure. "Blimey, mate, next time warn me when yer gonna drop in outta th'sky. Almost bonked m'bonce on that tree branch way up there, I jumped so high!" He chuckles, giving a shake of his head as the question presented. "Eh, if that was th'case, I'd be completely flat broke, nothin' rattlin' about up here but m'dusty ol' brain, y'know." He taps at his temple with a paw. Taking a look around, he hmms. "Grass is pretty long, perfect place for serpents t'be hidin' out..."
Adrian hmms, looking off into the underbrush. "Possibly," he replies. "I've been keepin' an ear out." With the other hares moving on a little ahead, he takes the time to enjoy the cooler air of such a thick pine forest. "Lissen... We deserve a break, eh? I've been talkin' t' th' Sub-Leftenant, an' 'e agrees...that if this "Noonvale" place really exists, we should...tarry, for awhile. At our leisure." He looks over at his friend.
Monty thinks over Adrian's words quietly as he continues to move forward, also hanging back and enjoying the cool air and shade of the forest. He draws his blade and begins to lightly swipe at the grass in their path as they make their way down the path. "Hmmm. Not a bad idea, really, could definitely rest these achin' footpaws for a few extra days. Am kinda torn though between gettin' in a good rest, an' tryin' to make our way back to the mountain as soon as possible. I've been gettin' an ominous feelin' as of late that somethin's just not right over there, mate. Not sure what it is, really, maybe it's just m'brain playin' tricks on me, y'know?" The smaller hare gives a little shrug. "I mean, not a whole lot we could do about it now, t'be honest."
Adrian hrmms, and he nods, though he sets his jaw grimly. "Aye, I know 'ow y' feel..." He sighs. "I'm torn mahself. I don't relish seein' Fathah again anytime soon... Tha's partially why I jumped at th' chance t' keep goin' north when Lord Ciocan offered it." He looks up toward the treetops and the sky above. "I've been keepin' somethin' from y', an' it's prob'ly about time I tol' you. Somethin' Fathah felt 'e needed t' tell me back when we were at Redwall."
Monty's ear perks, and he glances over at Adrian as they walk, his head tilting a little in curiosity at his words. "Oh yeah? Wot's that, mate? I mean, I don't blame ya honestly, I haven't been th'most chatty as of late, honestly." He chuckles. "So yeah, might as well tell me wot y'need t'tell me, now's as good a time as any, I suppose..."
Adrian nods, and he bumps his paw against Monty's nearest shoulder. "Ah, y' don't need t' be chatty," he remarks. "I honestly just appreciate y' bein' around, quiet or no'." He then sighs, and looks ahead. "So, anyway... Mah parents lied. Agh... Not just mah parents... Th' Long Patrol 'as been lyin' to me, for seasons. Ever since I was a leveret. When Fathah tol' me, I'll admit mah trust was a bit shaken." He shakes his head. "Sorry, I'm beatin' around th' bloody bush. Back when we were at Redwall, aftah I accepted th' assignement t' go furthah north, th' Majah pulled me aside privately an' was all... "I need t' come clean... Yahr goin' north, an' y'll prob'ly meet yahr brothah." An' I was all, wot th' bloody 'ell..."
Monty blinks in surprise as the news is relayed, the hare lifting a paw and rubbing at the back of his head as he stares at Adrian. "...wait, WOT? Yer BROTHER? So y'got a sibling then, eh?" He bites the inside of his cheek for a moment as his gaze returns to the path they are following. "Whoa. Don't blame ya fer bein' upset, mate, that's....that's definitely not somethin' that should be dropped on yer head outta nowhere. Heh..." He tries to think of something else to say, knowing the subject is likely a sore one for his friend. "...so, why would they've hid this from ya all this time? Did 'e do somethin' bad an' they sent him away, or wot?"
Adrian mmms. "I've got four siblin's, actually. Three are youngah an' they're back 'ome. But mah oldah brothah was supposedly dead." He grimaces. "At least, that's wot I was tol' since I was young. But no, 'e's very much alive, an' even worse, 'e went AWOL from th' Patrol, about 10 seasons ago. 'E jus' skipped out without a word. Apparently it shamed mah parents somethin' fierce. An' apparently 'e sent 'em a lettah via messengah 5 seasons ago. 'E's married, Mont. Or at least 'e was. An' 'e's somewhere up north... Possibly livin' with distant cousins. Sooo... Yeah."
Monty laughs, a little. "Ah yeah, I bloody knew y'had other siblins, mate, sorry...m'brain's just a bit on th'fuzzy side y'know. Am guessin' all th'blows to the bonce are startin' to catch up with me, heh." He nods slowly as Adrian further explains. "Ah. Gotcha. That's...definitely some pretty interestin' news. I'd never think of doin' such a thing as desertin' th'patrol, but on th'other paw, I...c'n kinda see why this whole thing wouldn't be for everyone. I suppose that's somethin' that one would decide on before they joined, but...I can't judge anyone else for anythin', mate." He gives a little shrug. "So...that bein' said...that th'reason why you're plannin' on travelin' north once we get back? Y'wanna go find im?"
Adrian frowns, and nods. "I have to. Lossow knows a little, I didn't tell 'im as much as I tol' you... 'E's thinkin' all legally and o' th' Patrol 'n' all that, an' 'e wants t' take mah brothah in f'r goin' AWOL so many seasons ago... I dunno if I c'n do that in good conscience, though..."
Monty shakes his head. "Honestly, wot good would it do? If he's got a family an' he's happy after all these seasons, we should just let 'im be. I mean yeah, definitely go see 'im fer sure, but as far as arrestin' 'im goes, I vote nay. No reason for it, it wouldn't prove a thing t'anyone, mate." The small hare glances to Adrian. "You could definitely ask 'im th'reason why 'e did it, o'course, just t'know, but...that's as far as I'd take it. If y'want, I'll talk t'Lossow about it too, let im know my feelins on th'subject. I think bein' through as much as I have, my opinion might hold a bit o'weight..." he chuckles. "I'd hope, anyway."
Adrian nods, and he rests a paw on his friend's shoulder. "Tha' would mean a lot," he says, looking into the other hare's eyes. "Y've been a bettah friend th'n I've evah known, I 'ope y' know that. I'd mahch t' the gates o' 'Ell by yahr side..."
Monty chuckles dryly as he grins at Adrian. "Heh. Let's 'ope it nevah comes t'that, mate. But if we were evah in a situation like that, y'know I'd stay right there with ya, bucko. Y'supported me when a lot of others didn't, goin' through all th'foggy brain stuff I was dealin with, an' I haven't forgotten it." He claps his paw on the paw that's resting on his shoulder, giving Adrian a smile and a nod. "Ahem. So, er, anyhow. We, ah. We better catch up with th'others, they're walkin' like their scuts 'er on fire, gonna end up leavin' us behind!" He sheaths his sword, giving his ear a waggle. "C'mon mate, sally forth n'alla that talk!" He then attempts to pick up his gait a little more so they wouldn't end up losing their comrades.
Adrian nods, shaking his head after having gone mushy for a moment there. As the two pick up the pace, they pass a fallen-down sign that reads [<-- Noonvale 2 Miles] Adrian sees it, and he lets out a whoop. "Hurry up, you scut-butts, we've only got two miles to go! We'll be there before dusk!" And now that their destination is so close, they make haste on their way.
I think Monty hasn't been drawn yet
Hey, thanks for drawing Dom! It's funny that you drew him in his winter coat as opposed to his normal reddish-brown shade. He is an Arctic hare after all! I do like how he's being side-eyed there by the recruits....they definitely know what they're in for.
Hey guys. Something came up and I won't be able to make it on today unfortunately. I'll try to see what I can do for tomorrow. Hope to see you guys soon.
Yeah, Monty is tagging along once again. He had a talk with Sola and he asked her to stay behind this time for her own safety, so she's likely going back with the group to Sala.
I apologize for my prolonged absence. I am not in a good place right now.
Honestly, right now at this point, I really am not sure when/if I'm able to RP at all. My schedule at work was changed and I am working practically all nights now, which severely limits my ability to be here, especially when everyone else is.
I have also been dealing with major bouts of depression and anxiety, leading to my mood severely dampening during those times I -am- able to connect.
There have been a few times where I was seriously debating simply killing off Monty and Dom and just going away for a long time until I feel I am in the right headspace to connect and RP again. This is still something I think about every now and then, but I'm not sure if that's the course of action to take.
As for Dom/Monty, my assumption is that they are still in their respective areas (Mountain, Redwall) , doing things in the background until I decide what exactly I'm going to do with them.
I hope you all are doing well, and I do miss RPing with you.
Hope to see you soon.
- Dom/Monty
Location: Salamandastron Dining Hall
Characters:
Dominik - LP Private
Julia - Leveret, Felicity's sister
Koda - New LP Recruit
Scene: Two friends search for and find each other in the mess hall, conversation ensues, and extra cookies are handed out!
----------------------------
Koda is fairly new to the mountain, he has gone threw some training and now its time to eat some food, he isnt sure if its lunch or dinner but he is hungry and he knows that.
It is lunch time in the Mountain, and the leverets are in the Dining Chamber with their Caretakers. They have been behaving for the past few weeks, which is usually a very suspicious thing. But for now they are continuing to behave. Julia in particular is being good and eating her food like a lady, but her green eyes move as she continues to look around the room for someone. She hugs her hare dolly close while she eats with her free paw, not noticing that their matching blue dresses are both quite wrinkled. The auburn-furred Dibbun is more worried about finding whoever it is she's searching for to worry about trivialities such as wrinkled clothes.
Dominik ducks into the room, the massive hare pausing near the doorway to take a look around the mess hall. Eyes scanning all the various faces, he too seems to be searching for someone. As large as he is, he always tended to make an entrance whether he was intending to or not, and once again eyes turn in his direction as he steps in. Quite used to it at this point, the stares go unacknowledged, and the others simply return to whatever it was they were doing. He does notice how well behaved all the leverets are being, however...it was the same situation in the classroom as well, there had been no major incidents for quite awhile. Hmmm. Koda is spotted as well, seemingly a new face, and Dom gives a nod in his direction, before his eyes return to scanning the room.
Koda steps back a little and nods "Ummmmhallo thar..sur" He says as he gets more food and a drink and is sat down to eat his meal.
The leverets are at the same table as the new guy. Julia waves to Koda after stuffing the rest of her pastie in her mouth, then she waves more vigorously at Dominik as he enters. "Dommy!" she says through a mouthful of food, then is chastised by a Caretaker. "Don't talk wi' y'mouth full! Swallow it first!" Scowling, the little doe hurriedly chews and swallows her food, then waves at him again. "Dommy! Dommy, come sit by /meeeee/!"
Dominik's expression lights up in a grin as he hears the familiar voice calling out his name, his eyes falling on the table of leverets. He makes his way in that direction, the large hare hearing Koda's greeting and giving a low, rumbling chuckle in response. "Sir? Is not sir. Only Dom." The buck smiles, before he takes Julia up on her offer and maneuvers his way towards where she is sitting. "Hello, leetle Julia!" he replies, his tone making it quite obvious that he is very fond of the much smaller leveret. "Vould sit down, but...bottom is too big..." he jokes, crouching down to gently give the small doe's ears a playful ruffling with a large paw. "Is having lunch, yes?"
"Den pull up a chair dat fits!" Julia instructs him, nodding and grabbing her fork to attack her salad with. She actually likes her veggies, so that's helpful. "Lunch is yummy," she informs him, taking a bite of salad. "I lookin' for /Lissie/, but I no /see/ her. I wish she was here," the doe becomes sad. "I /likes/ it when she eats lunch wif me....I miss her." It's literally only been 4 hours since she last saw her sister, but I guess time means nothing to Dibbuns.
Dominik finds Julia's simple advice quite helpful, and so the large hare's eyes scan the room for a chair that is adequate enough for him to sit in. He spies the largest chair in the room, which he'd made for himself awhile back to give him a place to sit...and he heads over and grabs said chair before bringing it over and plopping himself down on it. "Yes, is very good idea, Julia!" he replies with a smile. "Lunch is usually alvays yummy, am glad nothink has changed..." he chuckles. "Lissie is busy, she has grown-up things to do, remember." He notes that sad look, and so the large hare makes his best silly face, sticking his tongue out at the leveret and crossing his eyes. "You know vat? She has told me -many- times, that her most faaavorite time is getting to eat lunch vith her sister." The buck gives a sage nod, looking serious, before his expression dissolves into a smile. "You know vat else? Is Dom's favorite time, too...!"
Julia watches him get his chair, which rivals only Ciocan's in size. (It's a very big hare chair.) She looks up at him, her eyes big and round. "/Really/??" She is filled with wonder! "You /like/ eatin' lunch with meee?" She then remembers something, and frowns. "Bu' whot about /Grace/? She annoying."
Dominik laughs, the sound booming yet cheerful. Which is much better than his growl, at least! And much less terrifying. "Yes, -really!-" he confirms to the leveret with a firm nod. "If is not true, vhy vould Dom even be here now, hmmm?" he chuckles softly. "Julia has -very- good manners, and is very good at listening, and so is a very good vun to eat lunch vith!" As Grace is mentioned, the buck hmmms. "Leetle Grace...yes, she sometimes can have temper, but...vunce you get to know her, she is very sweet." He thinks it'll likely be wise to change the subject, and so his attention turns to Julia's plate. "So, vat is leetle Julia havink for lunch today, hmm?"
Changing the subject is probably a very wise thing to do, yes! Julia was about to comment on that, but then he successfully distracts her. She points to each thing in turn. "I has a salad wif croutons an' these things" (sprouts) "an' sconesies an' pasties an' soup wif /cheese/!" She picks up the last thing, a cookie. "An' I has to eat /aaaallllll/ of dat afore I can has my cookie." She sets down her dessert and holds up her cup. "I also has peach fizz. It super yummy!!" She takes a drink of it.
Dominik looks over the leveret's spread, the large buck's eyes shifting to each food item as Julia points it out. "Wow, zat is a lot of foods for such a small hare. But, you know zat if you eat it all, you vil one day grown up to be as big as Dom, yes?" The hare gives her a grin. "Zen you can have as many desserts as you vant, before dinnertime!" He leans down to almost-whisper in Julia's ear. "But, vil make you deal. If there is things Julia does not vant to eat, Dom vil help. Zat vay, can get to cookie -faster-. How about it, yes?" He sits back up again, fixing her with an expectant look! And he's supposed to be one of the adults in the room. Feh!
Julia's eyes widen. "I cans be as big as /you/?" She tries to imagine it: would she be able to rip trees out by the roots? could she arm wrestle Ciocan into submission? could she swim and swim and swim and never get tired? could she hide in the catacombs for days on end and not get in trouble? So many possibilities run through her mind! But she is quickly distracted by the buck's offer. She gets an offended look and proves that she is pure hare, through and through. "NoooOOOooo! Gets you own food, Dommy! Dis is miiiiine!!"
Dominik gives Julia a serious nod at her question. "Mmmhmm! If Julia eats allll her foods, and makes sure to do allll her chores...vun day, she can be as beeg as Dom!" As she refuses his offer to sneak food from her, he gives the leveret a big grin. "Is good, vas only a test, Julia. Must eat -all- her foods, if she vants to grow up to be like Dom..." he nods. "Vil get extra cookie now, too, for behaving so vell!" The large buck didn't have any particular confirmation of this, but...if he has to make it happen, he can make it happen.
Nibbling on the last remnants of her food, Julia thinks for a minute, then nods. "I wants ta be big like you an' Lissie, so's I'll eats /aaaall/ my food!" She has finished all her real food and can now finally move on to what is obviously the most important part of her meal: the cookie. "I can has extra cookies???" She looks positively thrilled by this prospect. "I been good! I even no fight with /Grace/." That's because she's been refusing to talk to her, but this is probably for the best.
Dominik gives Julia a nod, "Yes, Dom make promise to Julia. Say to eat all of food, and vil get extra cookie, and Dom vil not break promise. Is a hare of his word..." He reaches up and places a paw over his heart, wiggling both his ears at Julia with a grin. "Julia eat all of food, so...Julia get extra cookie." The buck reaches down and produces said extra cookie, before he slides it over to the leveret. "Oh, Dom beliefs leetle Julia. No fighting vith leetle Grace is good thing, is very proud of you..." The buck gives her a smile and a nod. "Is sure Lissie is proud of, too."
Julia pounces on that extra cookie like she'll never see another one in her entire life! The buck knows how to get to a leveret's heart, that's for sure. "Fanks, Dommy!" She sets it down on her plate and hopes up to give him a biiiiig hug. Accepting his praise with a huge grin, she sits back down and eats both of her cookies, sitting a little taller and a little straighter as she practically glows with joy! And when they get back to the classroom, she sits as far away from Grace as she possibly can to continue avoiding fights with her....
Dom will more than likely be on the ship. He hasn't wrecked some vermin in awhile so he'll be looking forward to that.
Location: Salamandastron Catacombs
Characters: Dominik (male Long Patrol Private), Felicity (female Long Patrol Sergeant)
Setup: Dominik has gone missing. He hadn't been seen all day around the Mountain, missing his assigned duties and even all his meals, and eventually Felicity decides to investigate. Her search is soon successful, it seems...and an old 'friend' makes his return....
----------------------------
It seems as if Dominik has disappeared. The large hare hadn't been present in the mess hall for either breakfast, lunch, dinner or any in between snacks...he hadn't been there for any of his training sessions, and most unusual of all, he hadn't shown up to watch the Dibbuns in the classroom area as he tended to do. Most every place he possibly could've been had been searched, but there -was- one place most didn't look, and it was in that place where Dominik is currently sitting. He'd chosen the alcove he'd kept himself in during those times he'd been dealing with the whole Erg thing, amd the hare is seated there with his back to the wall, eyes closed as he simply listens to the sound of his heart beating and the soft rumble of the blood rushing through his veins. He enjoyed the quiet, it gives him a chance to relax and it keeps his mind clear and sharp. The clearer his mind is, the less chance Erg has of returning. Oddly enough, the skeleton of a toad sits across from him, seemingly reconstructed from shattered pieces of bone.
Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Back in the catacombs AGAIN, with Blorg or whatever the toad's name is? Felicity has infinite patience for her friend's insanity, she just wishes he would warn her before he disappears like this. The maiden comes down with a tray of food in her paws, having a good idea of where he may be. "Dom? Dom, love, y'down 'ere? I brought y'some food -- don't want y't'get sick from not eatin'." She makes her way towards his alcove, making sure he hears her coming. Just in case Erg is back.
Erg doesn't seem to have returned, as when Felicity approaches, the large buck simply peeks open an eye and peers at her for a moment. It closes once again, and he smiles a little. "Hello, Felicity...." He keeps his voice lower than usual due to the location they are in, though it is still just a tad louder than most. "Most probably vould not have looked down here. How long has Dom been gone?" He really had no way of telling time down here, so he genuinely seemed to be curious. "Is dark during day, dark during night. Losing track of time, yes." He opens both eyes and peers at the doe. "Is thanking for food..." He notices she also noticed Blorg, and he grins. "Do not mind Blorg. Is havink good conversations."
Felicity glances at the skeleton. Prrreeeeeetyy sure he can't /actually/ talk, bro. "Y've been down 'ere all day, love," she informs him as she hands him the food. "Y'missed everythin' from breakfast t'dinnah, includin' y'trainin' sessions. Julia asked me where y'were when I picked 'er up. I got 'er settled down t'bed, then I got some food an' came t'find you." There's soup, rolls, cheese, salad, pie, and pasties on the tray, as well as some ale. "Glad y'doin'...okay, y'know?" She means she's glad he's not gone crazy again. She would prefer to avoid that.
Dominik lifts a large paw and lightly rubs at the back of his head, looking uneasy for a moment. "...is true? Heh. Er, Dom apologizes, did not realize vas down here so long. Came down last night, saw bones lying around. Decided to put back together. Blorg vas very thankful. Must have taken longer than thought." The buck shrugs a little, before his eyes fall on the food Felicity brought. "Oooh. Is good. Thank you, Dom is most definitely a leetle hungry." With that, the buck completely annihilates the tray of food, doing his best to try not to be -too- messy, but alas, he'd been hungry having not eaten for an entire day...and so the occasional bit of bread or cheese goes flying about. Upon finishing, he picks up the cloth napkin and dabs at his mouth. "Ah. Is very good." With a sheepish grin, Dom gives Felicity a nod. "Yes. Is doing okay, no worries. Blorg is...reminder of things, but also reminder that Dom is feeling better."
Felicity nods. "Aye....I was concerned. Why'd y'come down 'ere in th'fihst place, though?" She then realizes that asking him questions right now is probably not the best idea, and so just lets him eat, sitting there quietly, eyes half closed as she thinks. He's not being as disgusting as he was when he was Erg, and there's no way his table manners right now could compete with the leverets, so she honestly isn't really too concerned with it. She also makes peace with the fact that maybe thinking Blorg is talking to him will help him stay sane. Maybe a tiny bit of crazy is okay. She nods once he's done speaking. "Well, may'ap tha's a good thing, t'be reminded that y'bettah. I'm sure some days are pretty stressful an' y'just need some time t'remembah stuff like tha'."
Dominik gives a simple shrug to Felicity's question, the buck reaching down and sipping from the ale. "Hmm. Is place to think. Is quiet place. Place avay from others, place vith no duties, and no other things to vorry about or concentrate on. Is just Dom, Blorg, and silence. Sometimes, is good thing, yes?" He smiles a little, whiskers twitching as his gaze shifts down to the ale, which he swirls around slowly. "Is appreciating concern, but...Dom vil be okay. No need for vorry." He nods his head slowly. "Aye. Is complicated thing, but...seeing remains of vat Dom did in swamps is keeping self grounded, to make sure thing never happens again." His gaze shifts to the toad skeleton, which had likely seen much better days. "Blorg is result of Dom losing sanity, and losing self. As long as he is here, Dom vil remember."
Felicity scowls a little. "Y'm'friend. I always worry 'bout m'friends." She, too, looks at the skeleton, her face softening. "Well, then.....if y'need 'im 'ere t'elp keep y'self sane, who am I to disagree? Y'know whot y'need more'n I do, wot!" She peers out into the catacombs. "I do agree that th'silence is nice. I sometimes need a break t'come down 'ere, too. I like t'sit by m'family's graves. I sometimes talk t'them. Guess 'tisn't as different as whot y'need t'do sometimes as maybe I thought." She has an idea of what it feels like to fall down into the craziness, but she won't even pretend to even begin to understand what it was really like for him. This mindset of hers kind of shows in how hesitant she is to even say what she was saying.
Dominik's eyes remain on Blorg as he listens to Felicity, the hare's expression unreadable, his ear giving the occasional twitch. Nodding his head slowly, he hmmms. "Vorry about friends is good quality to have, but...do not let it take avay from other things, more important things. Like leetle Julia. She is very important to Felicity, yes?" His gaze shifts over towards Felicity and a smile curls on his muzzle. "And yes, silence is also good thing. Can help ven hearing other voices in here." He lifts a paw and lightly taps on his temple. "Can sort out vich vun is good, and vich vun is not so good." The buck chuckles softly, giving Felicity a knowing nod. "Ven is talking to family, family is listening, can promise that. May not be able to respond like you and Dom talking, but...they find own vays, in other vays." Dom's eyes shift back to Blorg. "Sometimes, Dom can hear family. Ven is quiet, is easier to hear."
Felicity listens. "Makes sense. Easiah t'distinguish anything in th'silence." She smiles. "Julia is everythin' t'me. ...I nevah 'ear m'parents. I wish I did. I wish I knew if.....if they were proud o' 'ow I'm raisin' Julia." Tears are welling up in her eyes. She has felt more and more stressed lately, and this conversation is sweet, but its depth is also making her more emotional.
Dominik's eyes fall back on Felicity, the buck watching her quietly as she speaks. When she finishes, he reaches over and rests a large paw on the doe's shoulder. In most cases it'd be a fearsome thing, but in this case, it is more reassuring and comforting than anything else. He gives her a knowing nod. "Can trust Dom, Felicity's parents have vays of showing they are proud. May not be able to physically hear, but...they are saying that they are -very- proud of Felicity, and the job zat has been done vith raising leetle Julia and making sure she is safe and taken care of." He gives a simple smile. "Sometimes things are there, and vun does not realize it. Sometimes vun looks too hard, and misses signs, ven they are right in front of nose." The buck gives his nose a little wiggle, his ears following suit. "Julia is in good paws, vil simply say this."
Felicity has faced countless things that are actually terrifying. Plus, she knows her friend very well, and can read his body language and facial expressions better than most can. So she just accepts his gesture of kindness for what it is. She wipes a tear away with the heel of her hand and smiles. "Th...thanks, Dom. That means an awful lot t'me. I...I'll try t'trust y'right."
Dominik watches as Felicity wipes away that tear, and the buck gives her a playfully admonishing look. "Vat did Dom say about crying, hmmm?" he teases, before his expression shifts back to a grin as he very gently pats her on the shoulder, his paw rising to press to her cheek before drawing away and settling back at his side. He gives a heavy sigh. "You are velcome. No try, just do." He smiles. "Try not to think too much about, vil be easier to see things this vay. So, is leetle Julia okay? Dom did not mean to scare ven disappearing. Am honestly surprised she didn't come down looking, herself..." he chuckles. "Vas half expecting to see her face pop around the corner at some point..."
Felicity shakes her head. "If you only knew 'ow stressed I feel...." Her smile widens when he asks about her sister. "Oh, she's good. I've gotten 'er t'rpomise t'not get int' mischief, so tha's prob'ly why she didn't come find ya. I think she 'ad been plannin' somethin', though....jus' the way she 'id some ribbons when I came t'get 'ere. May'ap 'twas good y'took th'day off. Y'mighta ended up lookin' like a maiden wi' ribbons 'round y'eahs, wot!" This is actually something one could expect from Julia, honestly....she wants everything and everyone to be PRETTY!
Dominik's expression is an amused one as Julia's possible shenanigans are revealed, and the buck gives a chuckle. "How often ven Dibbuns promise t'not get into things, do they get into things? Vould not be Dibbuns if did not do this, yes?" The large hare grins. "Am sure she vould have snuck avay at one point or another." A paw lifts and he rubs at an ear, looking somewhat sheepish. "Vell..." he gives a resigned sigh..."...vould not be first time this happened, and is more than likely not last time, either. Is thinking Dom has seen more ribbons already ven vatching Dibbuns than vun should ever have to see in an entire lifetime..." And yes, that wouldn't have been the first time the buck would have been covered in ribbons!
Felicity laughs a little, too. "Aye, now tha's th'truth!" She wholeheartedly agrees. "I just 'ope this time lasts longah than some o' th'previous times." She gives him a sly grin. "Whot, y'don't like bein' pretty?" She can't hold it before she laughs again. "'Onestly, I don't like bein' fancy. Makes me feel uncomfortable. More used t'wearing pants than skirts, y'know? Can't imagine whot 'tis like f'r you t'get bedecked by ribbons, tied on by little girls all th'time, wot!" But the Sergeant can dress up really nice, so she's not incapable of being fancy. She just feels uncomfortable, partly because she always compares herself to her mother when she does and feels she falls short. Not that she's ever confided that to anyone...
Dominik chuckles. "Ve vil see. Is thinking it depends on Dibbuns' mood. Vil do best to make sure they behave, though." He smiles, then lifts a paw and gives a nonchalant wave. "You know vat? In all honesties, Dom does not mind, because it makes leetle vuns happy. Ven leetle vuns are happy, Dom is happy, and so...Dom lets them tie ribbons, use paint, glue things to fur...vatever they vant. It keeps them occupied and out of others' fur, so...is okay." He shrugs. "Feel it is part of duty to keep leetle vuns safe, and so...it simply is part of territories." The buck smiles. "But, vhile Dom is being honest, vil say that Felicity is pretty even if vearing pants and not skirts. Does not need to be fancy to be pretty," he replies, simply, with a shrug.
Felicity smiles. "An' they love y'foh it. I think y'their favourite caretakah of all." But then he just had to compliment her! She blushes slightly in embarrassment, fidgeting with the edge of her sleeve to try and hide her mild discomfort. "Oh, uhm, well, thank you, Dom. Y'shoulda seen m'mum, though -- she was the most beautiful 'are I've evah seen. Julia an' I in'erited our fur colour from 'er, an' she was always s'graceful, even when fightin'. She was actually a Fightah, like you. M'sword used t'be 'ers. She was shorter'n me, though, which makes wearin' 'er old dresses a bit of a pickle. I had t'do some alterin'." She's also avoiding his compliment now.
Dominik tilts his head just slightly as Felicity mentions him being the Dibbuns' favorite caretaker. He smiles, even blushing a little, which is easier to see with his fur still being lighter than normal. "Heh. Er. Really? You think so? Vell...heh...is...Dom's favorite job to do, as vell. Yes, tossing around recruits is fun, but...getting to see leetle vuns' smiles and laughings means a lot more to Dom. So is good thing, means a lot. Is...glad to hear." He glances down for a few moments, his paw fiddling with the cup still held within. "Ahem. Yes. Am sure mother vas very pretty, very good vith sword. Most of times, things handed down from mother to daughter, and granddaughter." He smiles. "Felicity's mother vould be very proud of her daughter, and very happy to see daughter being looked after so vell."
Felicity nods. "I 'ope t'be able t'pass th'sword on t'm'own leverets someday..." she then smiles at the buck's embarrassment. Ha! Serves him right! "Oh, aye, I know y'Julia's favourite, t'be sure. Th'othah Caretakahs always get on them f'r their messes, an' don't play wi' 'em at th'same level o' depth as you. I'm pretty sure they love ya a lot."
Dominik does seem rather touched by that particular revelation. It wasn't something he'd actively pursued, in all honesty...he was simply treating the leverets with the same respect he knew he'd wish to be treated with, and not looking down on them at all for being, well....kids. The buck simply smiles and shrugs. "Vell, is glad to hear..." he replies, simply. "Dom loves leetle vuns, as vell. Hmm. Am thinking Dom should probably return upstairs, now, has things to do, can't spend all day down here..." He pushes himself up, then stretches, before he turns to head for the entrance to the alcove. "Am assuming Felicity vill be following, yes?" He remains there waiting for her to follow, smiling back at her as he waits.
Felicity smiles, happy that she made her friend happy. She gets up to follow him. "Aye, o' course! An' while we're at it, let's see if we c'n find a box f'r y't'keep Blorg in so 'e doesn't get broken. An' may'ap some glue, too...." She'll follow him upstairs and go do her off-duty stuff once they're done doing their team stuff, since finding him was her last on-duty thing of the day...
This was so much fun! You get both Philosophical Dom and Angry Dom both in the same scene...hee. This ought to be interesting! Thanks for the RP!
Setting: The Boxing Chamber in the Mountain
Characters: Dominik, Gregorian, Nilear, Wingsand, Terrence, and Zolomon
Summary: The day after supervising the leverets and gifting Greg's daughter Grace with a doll of her very own, the large LP Private known as Dominik has completely switched gears, as he is wont to do. We look in at the tail end of one of his boxing classes, and see that perhaps his particular style of teaching is not appreciated by his students....
-------------------------
The Dom who is present here is just a little different than the one who had been supervising the Dibbuns the previous day. More than likely, the pawful of recruits who are gathered here in the boxing chamber likely would have preferred that version a hundred times over. Two or three of them are seated on the benches surrounding the ring, nursing various bumps and bruises, while another couple nervously pace back and forth on the outside, their gaze focused up at the ring and the massive hare inside of it. Dom's expression is a deadly serious one, all traces of the joy and kindness from the previous day gone as he stands there and glowers down at a much smaller recruit who is standing before him, swinging his paws wildly and thudding them haphazardly into Dom's midsection. After a few moments of this, Dom lifts a footpaw and gives the recruit a shove, sending him careening across the ring and into the ropes, then to the canvas. "No," he booms. "Is too careless. Too wild. Not vin fights vith flailing. Try again."
The dread the recruits were starting to have for Dom's lessons was becoming well known around the mountain and perhaps that's part of the reason Greg decided he wanted to fit a little observation in to his busy schedule. He was however considerably late to the class but he at least makes it down to the boxing cavern as it's still going on. Ducking in the door quietly the lieutenant tries not to draw attention from the recruits as he keeps to the back and watches as the poor hare who had faced Dom crawls back to his feet with a groan and a quiet "Yes sah" as he prays to everything he can think of that it'll be someone else's go now.
Dominik stands there, towering over the recruit and staring down at him as he watches the poor hare stumbling back up to his feet. The other hare'd been worked over pretty well already, but Dom wasn't going to be satisfied until the younger buck does what he was instructed to do. There are no do-overs out on the battlefield, after all. "Control is key thing to learn. Cannot let desperation cloud mind ven fighting. Try again." He squares himself up, and prepares for the recruit's oncoming flurry. "Aim at one spot, and focus on spot. Now, go."
Gregorian remains by the door, watching quietly with no apparent sympathy for the poor recruit who has to try and fight Dom. The recruit, Nilear, who was scared enough just in the swamps way back then nods nervously at Dom's words and tries to focus on a spot on Dom's chest and starts punching at it repeatedly. He lets his guard down entirely in the process and it's sloppy but mostly aimed at the right spot though with not much force behind it.
Dominik allows Nilear to punch at him, letting his fists thud into his chest over and over, and the recruit gets that glowering stare once again as the sound of the punches connecting echo throughout the cavern. His ears flattening, Dom notices that lack of defensive attention, and he simply takes a step forward and lowers his head. Taking another step forward, he thuds it hard right into Nilear's chest, likely sending him sprawling again. "No! Is not paying attention!" he booms, obviously displeased. "Duck and weave. Duck and weave! Not stand in one spot!" Dom still hasn't noticed Greg's arrival, his attention fully focused on his class.
Nilear's punches become faster, more erratic and panicked when Dom starts getting closer. He can tell he's doing something wrong but he doesn't know what and he desperately doesn't want to make the giant hare angry an he tries to please Dom by punching him faster. Which is an odd way of doing things. The recruit yelps as he's hit and sent to the ground again. For a second he curls up in to a ball to protect himself as he almost expects to be attacked further. Instead it seems he's expected to get up and keep going. He's not sure if that's worse. As Nilear pulls himself back up on the ropes he looks at the other recruits and so spots Greg at the back. The recruit's ears suddenly perk "H-how about a dem-demonstation!" he suggests with a hint of desperation as he points Greg out.
Dominik had fully been prepared to reach down and tug Nilear back up to his footpaws to continue...however, the smaller hare manages to make his way back up himself via use of the ropes. "Stick, and move. Stick, and move. Said to focus on one spot. Meant to move while focusing on spot, makes you harder target for retaliate," Dom replies, his voice loud and harsh. As Nilear points out Greg, Dom likely thinks it is a tactic the recruit is pulling to get him to divert his attention, and the large hare smirks. "Am not falling for. Dom is not stupid. Not get distracted, like students. Now try again. Giving one more chance to do right. If not, 30 pushups, then 30 pullups." He lifts a paw and motions towards the pull up bars in the room.
Gregorian raises an eyebrow at the recruit when he's pointed out. He can guess it's a distraction too and he grunts with some satisfaction as Dom doesn't fall for it. At least now he's been spotted he can settle in on a bench to watch from instead, any attempt to hide forgotten "Carry on" Greg says, more for the recruits who'd started watching him instead of the lesson. For a second Nilear had hope that it would work but no, he was doomed "You may as well give me the pushups now, I'm never going to undahstand boxin'" he complains with a bit of a whine to his voice though he's still doing as he's told and trying again. He starts with his fists raised up defensively in the right position and tries a bit of bobbing and weaving though it's a little clumsy as he's having to think about it too much. Finally he bobs, he weaves, he punches and misses, weaves again and punches again in at least the same general area of where he was aiming. He keeps moving, sidesteps in to the ropes once and then quickly moved back before trying another punch.
Zolomon has done some runner drills and now has decided to venture into here with some free time he has.
Dominik likely would have been just a tad easier on Nilear had the smaller buck not decided to voice his opinion...it was likely something else he had to work on. Dom's expression darkens immediately, a stormcloud rolling over his already intimidating features, and his eyes remain focused on Nilear as he begins to bob, weave and punch halfheartedly. The punches connect but simply glance off of his chest, and Dom finally lashes out with a strong, lightning fast blow of his paw right between the careless buck's eyes. "Vith attitude like that, you never vil. Then are no good to me. Next." He nudges his footpaw against Nilear's likely prone form, rolling him towards the end of the ring, and the apron just outside the ropes. He then glances back and notices that Greg is indeed there. The buck gives him a nod of acknowledgement, as well as a look that seems to say 'can you believe these fools?' Zolomon's entrance is noted as well, and he also gets a nod.
Nilear has barely time to yelp and makes no attempt to block before Dom's paw hits him and the rest of Dom's lesson is lost to him and he lies knocked out on the floor. Greg glances towards the door when Zolomon appears and he nods at the runner before looking back at the ring with a small frown. The next recruit is helping drag Nilear out of the ring and looking very nervous and a little angry as he reluctantly gets in the boxing ring too.
Zolomon does a salute to Greg.." Sur...looks like boxing class is going....well tis going suppose "
Dominik watches as they remove Nilear, the large buck shaking his head slowly in disappointment. As the next recruit enters the ring, Dom shifts his attention to him. He notices said recruit's expression, and he folds his arms across his chest. "Must learn from mistakes of others. Before ve start, Dom wants you to tell. Vat did he do wrong?" He motions over towards Nilear. "Vat vas his beegest mistake?"
Gregorian casually returns the salute to Zolomon and nods slowly as he watches the ring "Mm. It's somethin' I suppose" The next recruit was Wingsand and he looked more annoyed at Dom's question but he has some sense and keeps a lot of his first thoughts to himself "He talked back and didn't duck...sah" he finally says with a frown.
Zolomon nods " I have boxed before...a little anyways."
Dominik gives a nod of approval as the answer is agreeable. "Good. Dom is expecting that you vil not make same mistake." He motions towards the spot in front of him. "Vant you to show vat you have learned. Do not focus on them..." he waves towards the other students, and also towards Greg and Zol. "Keep focus right here." He thumps a paw on his chest. "Remember. Duck, weave. Stick, move. Focus on one spot. If cannot successfully hit spot, choose another. Do not let yourself fall to distraction. Now go." He squares up in his stance, eyes fixed on the other buck as he prepares to react to however he chooses to proceed.
Gregorian watches the pair in the ring and the recruits in general, thinking as he talks to Zolomon "Hmm, I suppose yah did run through recruit trainin' pretty quickly. Boxin' was standard lessons when I first started" Wingsand at least has a little more awareness of what he's doing. He's still a recruit so it's not as neat as it could be but he bobs and weaves and punches like he's t least done some practice "Keep moving, keep your paws up and don't let the big blightahs near you, sah" he repeats as if reciting a lesson though the last bit may not be in the standard teaching. He was trying to hit Dom as hard as he could too.
Zolomon nods " Not much boxing no...some practice with saber and dagger, and already was good at running and archery...did learn some healing too"
Dominik gives a nod of approval as Wingsand seems to be taking things just a tad more seriously than some of the previous recruits that day. "Hmm. Good," he replies. "At least somevun is listening." He allows the student to strike him, his expression flickering just a little at the force put behind the blows. Hey, it's the best way he knows how to judge how hard they are hitting! And it likely doesn't harm him at all, despite any possible future bruises. He absorbs those punches, watching carefully for the moment when Wings might let down his guard. At that particular moment, Dom lashes out with a quick jab aimed at Wings' gut, followed by one aimed at his head.
Gregorian hmms "I suppose it's a little different for those who come tah the mountain with some trainin' already" Wingsand has been paying attention to everyone else getting hit in the lesson too so he's expecting something and springs to the side to dodge the gut punch but he barely ducks in time for the second one to his head, the punch clipping his head and making his ears sting. He stumbles, growls and it turns out Wings has a temper as he immediately jumps at Dom, going to tackle the big hare with an angry roar.
Zolomon nods and then " Whoas...is that wise?" Has anyone ever tackled Dom yet ?
Dominik is about to make a positive comment about Wings avoidance of his punches; he was likely the first one in awhile to see them coming and avoid the brunt of them. Before he can get anything out, however, Wings decides to let his temper take over, and Dom finds himself with an angry and frustrated buck launching himself at him. He catches him as Wings attempts to tackle him, and the large buck takes a stumbling step backwards and falls into the ropes, seemingly taken by surprise. It was a boxing class, not wrestling, after all. "Oooof!" He is more stunned than hurt, really, and Dom has to do his best to not let his own anger show and take over, because that likely would lead to consequences for everyone involved. He growls, attempting to shove Wings off of him and to the ground.
Gregorian looks surprised as well but he doesn't get up until Dom growls. He's not worried about Dom getting hurt but Dom getting angry could be bad for everyone "Alright, spar among yahselves!" he yells at the other recruits as he heads for the ring side, keeping it to a quick but calm pace to not panic things further. Wings takes the opportunity as Dom stumbled to try and punch the big hare in the head before he's shoved away and ends up pushed to the ground and rolling smoothly back on to his feet to face Dom again "Ya not knocking me out like Nil or the othahs" the recruit growls before Greg's tone from the ring side cuts it short "I think that may be enough for one day" the lieutenant says firmly.
Terrence had been meaning to make the rounds earlier in the day, but like usual something caught his mind. After a detour to double check if the information was accurate, the sergeant makes his way down to the boxing chamber in time to hear Greg's words. Mentally noting were everyone is at the moment (and how Dom seems none too happy), Terrence does his best to saunter over to the Lt and causally ask, "So, sah, what you think 'bout how they're all coming along? In paw-to-paw combat that is."
Dominik takes that punch in the head, the large hare's head jerking back in the process. He manages to regain his balance just in time as Wings rolls back up to face him, and after a few tense moments of staring down at the agitated hare, his paws both clenched, a grin breaks over Dom's muzzle. A laugh rumbles deep within his chest, before it rings out within the chamber. "Finally. Someone is getting point of exercise. Point is to avoid being knocked out. Congratulations, Wingsand. You were first to understand today." He squints the eye that had been punched. "Landed blow, too. Is good," he gives an approving nod. "Is still on footpaws. They are not." He gestures towards those on the outside who are gradually coming to and recovering. He turns his head to glance at Greg as he intervenes. "Dom agrees. Is enough for today." He glances over towards some of the other students, "Spar in ring. You three...get in ze push-ups." Dom climbs out of the ring, and approaches both Greg and Terrence. He doesn't seem any worse for wear aside from the newly acquired shiner. "Hello, sirs."
Wingsand looks wary and a little confused as he's congratulated and the fight ends even though he punched "Er...right. Thanks...sah" his anger replaced with confusion he backs off to get away from all the sudden officers and goes to help Nilear get checking out with the healers and then get given free drinks because giving Dom a blackeye practically makes him todays hero of the recruits. Greg lets things de-escalate and the recruits back off to their own sparring before he sighs quietly and looks between Dom and Terrence "Well I wouldn't have called that last part boxin'"
"Hmm." Terrence hadn't seen the last part so he'll have to take Greg's word for it. "Hello, Dom." He nods to the big hare, raising an eyebrow at the bruised eye. "I hope you didn't kill the poo'h hare who gave you that..." The sergeant glances back to Greg, "Anyway, Sah, if it wasn't boxing what'd you say it was?"
Dominik simply smirks, a little. "Hrm. Sometimes, student gets...a leetle frustrate. Angry. Instead of channeling it into their sparring, they let it take control and end up lashing out. Dom admit, is hard on students. But, ven out on battlefield, vermin vil not take into account feelings, vil not accept mistakes and give second chances. Vun showing of weakness, and it is a trip to Dark Forest." The large buck shakes his head slowly. "Trying to get them to understand is hard part. Is nothink personal. Only vant best fighters, cannot be careless, cannot show weakness." He lifts a paw and rubs his eye for a moment. "Landed good shot..." he chuckles. "Must find ice, soon."
Gregorian gestures at Dom and then Windsand "Practically descended intah a brawl for a moment then but the recruit lives...Just knock them around as yah like but perhaps try not tah knock them out, eh? They stop learnin' when they're unconscious and yah'd be amazed how long a broken skull takes the out of the field" he says before going to wave Dom off at the mention of getting ice "Hm, yes, sure. Best tah get it before the swellin' sets in"
Dominik chuckles, and nods. "Must admit, is trying to work on force of punch, so that student isn't knocked out. Is work still in progress." He shrugs. "No broken skulls yet. Only bruises." He grins, before he gives the two a nod. "Yes, sir, is vat Dom is planning. Also, bath is likely. Been in here most of day so far. Vil see you both later, yes?" The large buck gives them both a salute, before he makes his way towards the door and heads out.
Nodding, Terrence look between the two hares. "Indeed..." A moment later a slight grin appears, and he calls after Dom, "Besides, I'm not looking forward to dealing with the recruits you rattle the brains of!" He laughs. "They've got little enough to spare already!"
This one was a lot of fun. I'm so glad Grace decided to forgive Dom! He is very fond of the leverets and honestly wouldn't do a thing to ever hurt them.
The more I think about it, the more I'm pretty sure that Dom would take up leveret-supervision duties for this particular event. He'd be extremely awkward in any other instance, and so that's kinda where I'm at with that.
Setting: The Dining Chamber
Characters: Dominik (hare, LP Private, fighter), Grace (hare, leveret, Greg's daughter)
Scene: Lunchtime in the Mountain, and both the littlest and the largest hares in the mountain decide to dine in the same location, both with plenty of things on their mind.
----------------------------------
The dibbun sitters were having quite the day. The dibbuns had been acting up all day and there was practically a revolt in class so most of them had been kept back to tidy up while the few who hadn't been involved got to go have lunch. Grace is among those few. Normally she'd be in with the other lot but she's still a little quieter than she used to be. She sits at the table, ignoring the the lone sitter with the group who was paying more attention to the youngest of the leverets while Grace just poked her food around the plate with a fork rather than eating it.
Well, Grace isn't the only occupant of the room currently poking at her food; a short distance from where she sits, the large form of Dominik is seated at a table, himself, his gaze fixed down on the tabletop as he stares down at the salad that sits on his plate. He hadn't really touched much of it, despite being relatively hungry after the training session he'd just returned from, and with his fork, he pushes a small cherry tomato back and forth, and back, and forth, just sorta staring down at it with no real interest. His head rests on his other paw, which is holding it up, and he mutters softly to himself, the buck's ears folded down. It is quite obvious he has a lot on his mind...it was the first time he'd been upstairs really since the incident on the beach with the ferret and badger cub.
Big hare and tiny hare are basically mirroring each other as Grace rests her cheek on a paw and pushes bits of salad around. She's still young though. There's only so long she can stay lost in thought before her eyes start to wander and look for distraction. It's then that she finally spots Dom. Honestly that she didn't spot the giant white hare right away is probably an indication of how distracted she was. She startles at the sight of him though with a squeaky little "Eep!" The dibbun sitters don't seem to notice though and pay no attention as she ducks down behind the table edge. She peeks over the edge of table almost immediately but forgets to hide her ears so they're still perked upright and easily seen.
Dominik had been distracted relatively well, and so he doesn't notice the table of leverets not too far from where he's sitting. As Grace spots him and ducks down beneath the table, Dom's ears perk at the familiar 'eep!', and the large buck lifts his head. His eyes fall upon the spot where Grace had been sitting not a moment ago, and he blinks...though he does certainly spot those ears peeking up from the little doe's hiding spot. He smiles for a brief moment, his expression then quickly shifting to one of sadness as he remembers the reason why Grace likely decided to hide from him. His shoulders heave in a heavy sigh, before his eyes return to his salad and he resumes rolling the tomato around with his fork. Suddenly, an idea strikes him out of the blue; the massive hare spots one of the Dibbun caretakers with his back to him, obviously busy with one of the leverets. Pausing a moment to take a look back and forth to make sure he's not being watched, a little smirk appears upon his muzzle as he picks up the tomato on the end of his fork. Setting the fork down on the edge of the table, he gives the handle a little bop with his paw; this in turn sends the cherry tomato flying directly towards the back of the caretaker's head. Quickly picking up the fork again, the hare turns his attention right back to his salad as if nothing had happened.
Grace peers curiously at him, incorrectly assuming she hasn't been spotted. There's another little startled squeak as he launches the tomato and she ducks down further, her imagination picturing it as rocks or something but then she blinks as it bounces off the caretakers head. The caretaker has been having a bad day already and immediately snaps round, looking around wildly for mischievous dibbuns "Who threw that?!" he doesn't count on a mischievous Dom though and Grace helpfully points in a random direction away from Dom. As the dibbun caretaker glares in that direction Grace turns around and looks suspiciously at Dom, narrowing her eyes a little. She's curious but doesn't entirely trust him.
Dominik glances up as the caretaker whirls around and glares in his general direction, and he too lifts his fork and points in the same direction that Grace points, the buck's expression one of complete and utter innocence. "Thinks he vent...that vay, sir. I'm sure of it." He nods his head slowly, before his gaze shifts over towards Grace and he gives the little hare a sly, secret grin. "Even stuck out tongue at you, sir. Is totally uncalled for." A frown slips onto his muzzle for a moment, though it is more an act than anything else. "Vil look for, if you vish." He sets his fork down and readies himself to rise from the table...
The caretaker glares in the direction they're now both pointing and gets up himself "No, no. No need, I'll find the rogue and then as he clearly doesn't wish to eat we'll skip right ahead to bath time!" he says as he suddenly ducks down to check under a table...he obviously finds nothing and moves on to the next table. He's not leaving the room so he's confident the dibbuns will be fine while he's not far away. Grace lets the caretaker get a little further away before she quickly looks back to Dom. "...Why'd yah do tha'?" she asks quietly.
Dominik chuckles and gives the caretaker a nod. "I is...hoping you find this...rogue." He still ends up rising up from the table, inching himself back so he can slip out from behind it. He slowly makes his way over towards where Grace is seated, doing his best to be as un-intimidating as possible. Which, with his size, is extremely difficult most of the time, but...he tries his best to not have his usually-grumpy expression. As he gets nearer, he gestures towards the chair beside her with a paw. "...hello, leetle Grace," he responds, his voice quiet. "Do you mind if Dom sit here, vith you?" His ears perk, giving a little wiggle, as he attempts a smile. He whispers to her as the caretaker continues searching out the culprit of the thrown tomato. "...I do not like tomatoes," he replies, with a simple shrug and explanation.
Grace frowns slightly as he gets closer and looks a little nervous , her eyes doing a quick flick to the caretaker to check where he is before she looks back at Dom. He didn't look scary right now but then he didn't start off scary last time. She doesn't know what to do or think. "...okay" she responds quietly when he asks if he can sit "Tomatoes won't make yah scary crazy too...right?...If yah goin' tah be scary y'have tah leave..." she tries to sound firm and in charge, trying to pretend not to be scared.
Dominik does seem to understand why Grace is acting the way she is, the large buck giving her an appreciative nod as she gives him permission to sit there. "Thankyous very much, leetle Grace. Is very kind of you to let beeg, scary Dom sit vith yous." He very carefully lowers himself into the nearby seat, none of the chairs in the mess hall being particularly accomodating to his bulk. Still, he sits regardless, the chair giving a squeak in protest. To Grace's question, he chuckles softly and shakes his head. "...no. Tomatoes only make Dom gag. They do not make crazy." After a moment, he sighs, his eyes fixing on the little doe. "I promise, vith all of my heart, that I vil not be scary." He rests a paw over his heart, holding the other up in the air. "Is swearing this, right now." He gives her a smile as he notices that firm tone she is using. "Hmm, vun day leetle Grace vil grow up to be leader of hares in mountain. Is -very- intimidatings, yes."
Grace's ears twitch and she looks quickly at the chair when it starts protesting Dom sitting on it. She's ready to make a dash for it if it starts breaking but waits until it stops "...Dom needs tah lose weight..." she says with a tiny worried frown, concerned for the chair. Never mind that he's just heavy because he's huge. She watches him closely as he swears not to be scary. She can't decide whether to trust him or not but she's not running away and hiding so baby steps. "I'm intimidatin'?...But the caretakahs don't do wot I say...Neithah do the other dibbuns..." she seems confused in general.
Dominik cannot help but laugh at Grace's initial comment...his eyebrows raise and he gives the Dibbun a playful smile. "Hmm. Losing veight, you say? Vell, vhy do you think Dom is eating a salad?" The large buck chuckles softly. "If chair break, Dom can fix..." he explains, with a shrug. "But, is not important thing to Dom, right now. Important thing is...Dom does not vant leetle Grace to be afraid of, any more." His expression shifts to one that is a little more serious, his eyes still fixed on Grace. "Is understanding vhy leetle vun is afraid. Dom does not blame you for this, at all. Dom vas afraid of self, too." He sighs. "...vhile out in swamps, bad things happened. Is reason for crazy Dom. But...Dom is getting many helps, from Felicity, from Terrence, from lots of everyones." He smiles. "Is to make sure that the crazies do not come back. And Dom is really hoping that leetle Grace can forgive...he is missing times together." He gives the little doe his most sincere expression as he makes sure to keep his distance.
Grace frowns but slowly stops watching him so closely and looks down at her plate instead. She's thinking. It's all a bit too complicated and difficult for her which makes her frustrated because she can't decide what to do. There's several minutes of silence before she mutters the easy bit "Dom's not eatin' salad, Dom's throwin' it at the caretakahs" she's apparently picking up on his habit of referring to himself by name. Saying anything seems to help as she carries on pretty quickly after that "The grown ups are always tellin' us t'forgive stuff if yah get an apology..." she frowns "...I don't wants tah forgive" she says firmly, trying to hold on to the anger; it feels better than being scared to her. "Yah tried to hurt dad!..." She can't stay entirely mad though and after a pause, mutters "Might, maybe, give yah a second chance...maybe."
Dominik chuckles, and gives Grace a nod. "...is making fair point. But, did not throw, if vant to be technical. Used fork." He grins, before clearing his throat and trying to return to his slightly more serious demeanor. Hey, she didn't turn and run from him and is seemingly listening to him, so it is definitely a start if anything. "Ahem. But, er...yes. Dom can understand leetle Grace still being mad. Vas Erg who tried to hurt father, not Dom. Talking to others is reason vhy Erg is staying avay for avhile. Do not like ven he is there. Dom knows that...he is not himself, ven he is there." The buck sighs, softly, lifting a paw to rub at his temple. "Vil continue to try and keep avay, is promise. For Grace." The buck gives her a smile. As she mentions giving him a second chance, possibly, his expression shifts to one of relief. "Is good, maybe is better than not at all. Vil accept this decision." He nods. "Also vil say, is making leetle Grace a gift, but cannot tell vat it is, yet, until is done."
Grace frowns a little angry frown. "Don't like Erg." A tiny bit of fear peeks through after that as if that might make Erg angry. She looks nervously at Dom again. "Don't want t'talk tah Erg ever again!" she seems to accept his promise though and calms down slightly. Relaxing at least enough for her ears to perk slightly at the mention of a gift. She immediately opens her mouth to ask what it is but he says he can't say so there's a little pause while she thinks of a different question "When's it done? My birthday's ages away, yah can't make me wait that long!"
Dominik continues to rub at his forehead with a paw, the buck's ears perking. "Ya. Dom does not like Erg, either..." he sighs. "Erg hurts friends, does not care. Only vants vun thing, that is to destroy. Vil do best to make sure that Erg stays far away, Grace. Is promising." The buck smiles weakly as his gaze falls back upon Grace. "Cannot apologize enough for vhat happened...only vanted to have lunch vith Grace, before things happened." He chuckles a little more as she picks up on the fact he mentioned he is making her a gift, and he gives her a wide grin. "Oh, no, is not for birthday, is for normal times. Vil let you know ven is finished, yes? Is taking time to make, is something Dom has not done before. But...vants it to be perfect gift, so is taking time." He gives her a nod. "Vant it to be a surprise."
Grace considers this mysterious date in the future with about as much thought as she put in to working out how to feel about Dom. Finally though she slowly nods and says "Okay..." a little pause and she suddenly picks up her plate and carries it over, going to sit next to Dom and put the plate between them. "We can have lunch now. I'll eat the tomatoes...Yah can have the cucumbers. They're yucky." She might not be climbing and hanging off of him for some time, but it's a strong step back to normal.
Location: The Catacombs
Characters: Dominik (hare Private, LP fighter) Felicity (hare Sergeant, LP runner), Terrence (hare Sergeant, LP fighter)
Summary: Dominik had disappeared once again after the series of evens involving vermin and a slain Dibbun, and he'd been seemingly missing for a few days. Felicity decides to try and find him, with some measure of success. A discussion is had and an understanding is reached.
-------------------------
Having spent some time up aboveground while in the infirmary for his injured paw, Dom had seemingly been making some good progress with his recovery...especially mentally. However, the incident in Halyard happened, which initially wasn't a bad thing since he'd likely saved Terrence's life with his actions that day, however upon the group returning some time later with the ferret, the slain badger cub and an injured Terrence, things had seemingly gone back downhill once Dom had found out what had happened. Intending to 'interrogate' the ferret in his own personal way, Dom never had gotten the chance to due to the incident that resulted in said ferret's death, and so the large hare had retreated back down to his spot in the alcove down in the catacombs to try and sort things out in his brain and figure out what he was going to do about things. Currently, he sits with his back against the wall, his eyes closed as he appears to be napping...though an ear always remains perked and listening.
Seriously? He couldn't have, I don't know, talked to somebody about it? Felicity is full of such thoughts as she makes her way down into the catacombs. What with all her extra duties training Gergorian's division in addition to her own, as well as everything else she usually has to do, she wasn't able to check on him until today. Now, carrying a lantern, the Sergeant makes her way down to the Catacombs, trying to not fume or be mad at her friend. It's not his fault he's a lunatic, she reasons. "Dom? Dom, love, y'down 'ere?"
Dominik's ear gives a twitch as he hears the familiar voice. His eyes remain closed, though he answers Felicity with a quieter-than-usual, "Yes. Is here." He is in the same spot he'd been staying during his previous time spent down in the catacombs, and despite the surroundings, the large hare seemed to find an odd sort of comfort in the tucked away space. If anything else, it was at least quiet here, and it gave him plenty of time and opportunity to think and ponder things, and let his brain settle down from all the various things going on inside it all at one time. Sometimes it was too much of him to deal with, and he just had to go -somewhere- to make sure he didn't cause any incidents.
Felicity invades his spot! With a lantern! The haremaid stands in the entrance of the alcove, looking worried to the point of grumpiness. "Dom....love, why didn't y'at least tell me where y'were goin'? Whot're y'doin' down 'ere agin?" She would be trying to make eye contact, but that's kind of hard when his eyes are closed.
Dominik is silent for a few moments, his shoulders heaving in a heavy sigh before finally, an eye peeks open to peer at Felicity. "Is...sorry. Dom had to go. Lissie vas busy vith many things, did not vant to bother her vith more things." His eye closes again, both his ears perking as he settles back against the wall in his current sitting position. "Is quiet here. Dom need quiet to...think. To calm self. To make sure no things happen again, vith Erg." The hare's eye opens again. "Vas -so- close to coming back, ven seeing ferret. So close. Vanted to squeeze his neck...til head popped off. Did not get chance to." He frowns. "Decided not to, then...vas too late, ferret is dead. Dibbun is dead, because of ferret."
Felicity's grumpiness melts as she hears her friend's explanation. Sitting on the floor, she sets the lantern by her knee and reaches out to hold his paw. "Dom....I don't /care/ 'ow much I've got goin' on. Y'm'friend. Y'important. Please, next time, if there evah is a next time..../please/ tell me, okay? Even if y' 'ave t'interrupt somethin'. Okay?" She scoots closer and goes to hold his paw with both of her own. "You chose not t'do that because y'a good creach'ah. I c'n undahstand needin' t'come down 'ere t'make sure y'don't do somethin' y'regret. That's pretty brave, too."
Dominik's other eye opens as Felicity sits near him and scoots herself closer. As she takes his paw into her own and holds it, his eyes drift downwards as he simply stares down at his paw, his expression strained and troubled, the frown still upon his muzzle. His voice is quiet, occasionally cracking as he speaks, just as strained as his face. "Who vould do such things, Lissie? Who COULD do such things? Vat kind of...of -creature-...could purposely hurt a leetle vun? Vat monster could -kill- a leetle vun?" Dom lifts his eyes to meet Felicity's, welling up with both sadness and rage as a tear slides down his cheek. "Vas not there to stop it. Should have been. Should not have come back...should have stayed vith Terrence, then he vould not have gotten hurt. Badger...still be alive. Is my fault." His head droops again, ears folding back against the back of his neck.
"'Ey, 'ey now." Felicity scoots forward and goes to hug her friend. "Dom....Dominik, 'twasn't y'fault. Could nevah be. Y' 'ad no way o' knowin'. We can't be everywheh at once. Oh, Dom....I wish y' 'ad told me this was whot y'were thinkin'. I woulda told y'soonah. Y'not at fault." She pulls back and tries to cup his face in her paws to gently force him to look her in the eyes again, to wipe the tear away with her thumb. "D'y' 'ave any /idea/ 'ow many beasts I've been patrollin' with, or tryin' t'find, only t' 'ave them die? /So many./ We can't save everybeast, an' we can't live with the weight o' past mistakes. Those we've lost....th'little badgah....they wouldn't want that. They'd want us t'move fohwahd wi' courage t' honah theih memories. Please, Dom, don't punish y'self f'r somethin' y'could do nothin' 'bout."
Dominik gives a heavy sigh, the large buck letting Felicity hug him (which was an accomplishment in itself, being that Dom generally didn't like being touched in any manner by anyone save for perhaps the leverets climbing on him.) As she pulls back and holds his face in her paws, his icy eyes meet hers again, and he simply watches her as she speaks. Nodding his head slowly, the hare replies, quietly. "Have lost many, too. Back home. Is reason vhy came here to mountain, in first place. Vas only vun left." He falls silent for a few moments, pondering something judging by the shifting of his eyes and the hardening of his voice. "He is still out there. The beast who murdered badger cub. Ferret...vas not only one. There are more, there are others who are behind this." Dom frowns. "Dom vil find. Dom vil deal vith. And not Erg...Dom." The buck shakes his head slowly. "Cub vil not have died for nothing."
Felicity shakes her head. "Actually, all 3 o' the vermin involved 'ave been killed. Read th'repohts m'self, wot!" She scoots back, not wanting to make him too uncomfortable with her touchy-feely friendliness. "An' tha's why th'Long Patrol exists, laddiebuck -- is t'stop as many o'those monstahs as we can. As a /team/. An' membahs of a team tell each othah stuff." She wags a finger in his face. "So no goin' off an' disappearin' on me agin, please, wot!" She softens and sighs, rubbing her eye, which, as always, makes her look very much like her little sister. "Sorry....not meanin' t'be 'arsh....just 'ad a /really/ bad day. Not y'fault, don't worry." Well, it was partly his fault, but she's not going to tell him that.
Dominik's expression shows his disappointment as he hears that those responsible have already been dealt with, the frown still on his muzzle. "...oh. Vell. Is...supposing is good, then. But...Dom did not get chance to get paws on anyvun responsible." He sighs. "Better varn recruits for next training sessions. Dom might be taking things out on them, vithout thinking about." The buck smirks a little. He was already well aware of the reputation he'd already built for himself as a no-nonsense and harsh instructor in the training drills he was asked to run. This more than likely would not improve things at all in that aspect. "Apologies for disappearing. Dom has...many things to sort through, still. But Lissie's help is alvays appreciated. Has helped Dom already, more than you can know." He smiles a little, his ears giving a twitch. "Do not vorry. If Dom is down here, does not mean that Erg is back. Dom simply likes places vere it is quiet." Something seems to come to him suddenly, and he blinks. "Oh! Forgot to mention. Made box for Julia, to keep her toys. Is remembering ve talked about, before? Is done."
Felicity rests her head in her paws. "If I could let y'deal wi' stupid o' Whisowsky, that'd be great....chauvinistic /cad/...." She mutters. Shaking her head, she smiles. "I'm glad y'gettin' bettah, Dom. Anythin' that 'elps, I am 'appy. I don't want y't'be ovahtaken by Erg again." She then looks up at him surprise. "Really? Already? Well, tha's just grand! Where is it?"
Dominik notes Felicity's reaction when speaking of this...Whisowsky fellow...and the large buck's smirk returns as he lifts his chin a little, giving her a look. "Hmm. Send him to vun of my sessions. Can make it seem like accident, if necessary. Dom vil straighten out, very quick. Vil promise." He gives a rumbling chuckle. "Has vays." He gives a shake of his head, "Erg is still there. Is distant, but...is still there. Can feel, at times. But Dom can hold him back, ven needing to." The buck smiles as he notes the doe's surprised expression. "Left in infirmary vhile Dom vas there. Had time to work on, so that is vat did. Is still there, if vant to give to her."
Felicity grins wickedly. "Aye, I just might. Although 'e listen's t'malebeasts wi'out question or disrespect. 'Tis only females 'e's rude to." She stands and grabs the lantern. "May'ap 'tis that way wi' many beasts, Dom. We 'ave a monstah deep inside o' us that we 'ave t'fight every day o' our lives. Maybe y'not so weihd as y'think." She offers him her paw. "Now, then. Let's go take a looksie at this box."
Dominik waves a paw in a nonchalant manner. "Matters not. Vil still make things extra harder on him, even if listens. Is least can do to make life living hell..." The buck chuckles, before he takes the offered paw and stands. He gives Felicity a nod and a smile, "Yes, vil do. Is hoping vil like, added little touches here and there to the outside, made it just for Julia." He does seem proud of this fact, judging by his expression at least. He follows the doe out of the catacombs as they head back towards the upper level.
Terrence had spent the better part of an hour wondering the mountain looking for his fellow sergeant. Now he stands by the entrance at the catacombs after a recruit had mentioned Felicity going down here, debating whether or not to go in - no matter how well Dom is doing (or were he probably is), the dark catacombs hold a bit of terror for the bespectacled hare. Finally, after a minute or so, he grits his teeth and heads down the steps feeling his way with his good paw. "Felicity?" With surprise he looks from her to Dom, blinking. "Uh. Well, I wanted to let you know I'm partially back on duty, now! And hello, Dom."
Felicity smiles wickedly. "Good. 'E really deserves it, wot!" As they round the corner, she smiles at her fellow Sergeant. "Well, 'llo, Terrence! Good t' 'ear 'bout tha', wot!" A leveret caretaker comes into the catacombs, looking nervous. "Miss Felicity? Been lookin' everywhere foh you. 'Tis fah past time f'r you t'pick up y'sister." The Runner claps a paw to her forehead. "Oh my goodness gracious! I 'ad /competely/ lost track o' th'time! Dom, I'll come get th'box latah, promise. Sorry." She goes to touch his arm, then hands him the latern and follows the caretaker out, going pat Terrence on his good shoulder as she walks by. And then the 2 does are gone.
Dominik gives Felicity a nod and a smile as she heads off to tend to her sister, and he watches her go for a moment, before his attention turns to Terrence. He looks him over briefly, before giving him a nod. "Hello, sir..." he replies to Terrence. "Is looking better. Is good. Vas nasty injury, is lucky vas not killed." He states the obvious. He sighs, after a moment. "Dom apologizes, for...not being there ven attacked. Feels as if...could have stopped, if vas there. But, Lissie says is not Dom's fault, she is saying not to blame self. Still, cannot help but do this, a little." He shrugs.
"She is right, wasn't you'h fault at all." Terrence replies once Felicity is gone. "Not at all..." With a wry grin the sergeant wiggles his right arm, still in a sling. "Daresay this gull-wing came from me trying to capture the vermin instead of just killing them. Lissie's absolutely right. If anything," he adds, with a sigh, "It's my own damn fault fo' not just having my squad rush and stab the slavah."
Dominik shakes his head. "...no. Is understanding vat vas trying to do. If vould have killed on the spot, vould not have been able to get information about other possible slaves, in other locations. Things...vent sidevays, as they alvays tend to do ven dealing vith the vermins." The buck shrugs. "Main regret for not being there to help is, having no chance to prevent badger cub from being killed." He frowns. "Is hurting Dom, very much, here." He touches a paw to the spot over his heart. "Vanted to seek out vermin who did this, but...Lissie says it vas already done. Yes?"
"Yes." Terrence nods. "The same vermin who killed the poo'h thing also did this to me." Here he gestures to his right shoulder. "He impaled himself on my sabah doing so, though, so yes. They're all dead, now. It is a pity no one got any info from that bloody prisonah, but...yes." He says, for the third time, "Things do tend to go sideways, don't they?" Trying a laugh and failing, the sergeant falls quiet for a moment.
That is actually not far from the truth, hahaha. If he hadn't been warned first thing when Terrence got back, ol' Bonetail's name would have ended up literal. I was joking that Dom needs a new Blorg...hahaha But yes, he was not a happy camper when he found out they murdered a Dibbun. He's more than likely still outside standing near the grave til someone goes outside to get him.
Hah, I think Felicity is given more leeway with things than the others, so...she more than likely can with no repercussions.
Can't wait for the log from earlier tonight to be posted, though, it was a good one. Dom finds out one of the vermin killed a badger Dibbun, and reacts in turn.
This one was a lot of fun, and was started simply by someone mentioning the idea of Dom being a ghost. Hahaha. Plus a bit of the air is cleared between Dom and Terrence, and Dom sets a boundary...which is a good thing.
Yeah, Dom would more than likely end up being pretty good friends with Ciocan...since sizewise they are somewhat similar (despite Cio obviously being bigger, of course)...and I figure when they eventually do end up sparring, it'd be somewhat of a bonding experience for the two of them in a way.
And btw I do like the idea of Felicity remaining with Dom and keeping an eye on him...having the company would definitely go a long way in helping him to recover, mentally. His eventual training of the recruits would more than likely involve teaching them stealth, and how to make traps/tie ropes and such. Which he'd learned in his younger days, since he used to help build ships. Fel being there while he is doing this would also likely help in making him less frustrated when the recruits end up getting themselves tangled up in their own traps, hahaha. XD
Sola takes Monty on the castle tour, and things take a bit of a pleasant and unexpected turn for the both of them, for a change...until they don't. Warning. This is a long one! But I had so much fun with it....thanks Sola for being awesome!
--------------------------------------------
Characters:
Sola - Hare, Castle Floret Servant
Monty - Hare, Long Patrol Private
--------------------------------------------
There's an awkward silence from Sola as she leads the way out to the gardens and then stands just outside the door "This is, um, it. The flowers are somewhat bare in the winter" they've got some life in the place though and it's Southsward so it's barely even chilly. Everything neat, nothing gets to be wild in the place there's not even a fallen leaf in sight "They are...prettier in the spring"
Monty's attention is on his surroundings as they make their way through the castle in the direction of the gardens. Monty's mood had picked up rather dramatically, and instead of the silent, mopey Private who stared down at his plate, he more closely resembles the more carefree, relaxed Monty that had first left the mountain so many months ago. Awkwardness included, but...that's just Monty. It's actually rather endearing, mainly for those who have to watch him make a fool of himself. The small hare strolls along, eyes drifting over the various wall decorations they pass. Upon reaching the door, he comes to a stop. He gives Sola a smile and a nod. "Yeah, they...usually are, most of the time. S'okay, though, will still be interestin' to see th'difference between your garden n'ours."
Sola gestures ahead for him to look around as he likes "Please, explore as you wish...but don't fall in the pond" not that he would. She doesn't know why she felt the need to warn against that. For a second she tilts her hear thoughtfully when he mentions doing a comparison "While I suppose both the castle and your mountain are made with defence in mind but I would have assumed your gardens were kept more for food while some of the royals who have lived here have been of...extravagant tastes. Do you have flower beds, gazebos and things like this there?"
Monty gives Sola a playfully suspicious eye for a moment as she warns him about the pond, arms folding across his chest as his good ear waggles. "Pfft. I've only known you for a little while now an' yer warnin' me about fallin' into things. You sure you haven't been spyin' on me for, like, m'entire life?" The hare chuckles, giving the doe a grin, before he nods to her words. "Yeah, that's actually th'main difference I was thinkin'. The main purpose of our garden's t'pretty much feed th'mountain. I mean, I guess they made it look pretty nice in there, it's always nice n'quiet...an' they have flowers scattered about here n'there, for various reasons. But like, no fancy gazebos or anythin' of the sort..."
Sola's eye lightly up with amusement at his reaction to the warning "Perhaps I simply believed you to be the type to need the warning...Though if you are that type any warning is likely to be wasted and swiftly forgotten" she walks out further in to the gardens as she talks, tucking her paws in to her large sleeves to keep them hidden "They have never been attacked here while I have lived in the castle, perhaps they feel less need worry about such things...I always imagined Salamandastron would be a brutish place. Not that, erm, yourself or your friends appear to be brutes at all. Of course we have only just met, um...I'm sorry, you seem perfectly nice" she's not good at this conversation stuff.
Monty follows beside Sola as she begins to walk, his paws clasping behind his back as his eyes look over their surroundings. "Heh. Well, in my case, if I ended up in th'pond it'd be strictly by accident, miss. Believe me, I'd find some way t'completely make a bloody fool of m'self." With a chuckle, he gives his companion a smile, before his eyes shift back towards the garden. As she mentions Salamandastron and it's reputation, Monty tilts his head a little. "Is...that wot y'think when y'hear th'word Salamandastron?" he asks, with genuine curiosity, no anger or anything of the sort in his voice. "I mean, sure, we have th'occasional brute or two. We are a military institution, after all, need th' bruisers for battles n'such, but uh...I...think y'd be surprised if ya ever set foot in th'mountain." The hare smiles. "Most of us are just as normal as you lot 'ere. Keep in mind, I said -most- of us..." the hare chuckles, finding himself blushing a little as he is referred to as 'nice'.
"Oh, well, er...th...thank ya, miss. T's nice of ya t'say..."
Sola not for the first time wishes she could undo her words as she gets flustered and her ear and a half folds back "I...I mean, the stories, um, they're all of battles and b-bl-" she stops and closes her eye, she hadn't stuttered in years and here she was starting to "Bl-..." she tries a different word, trying to speak carefully "The rage of badgers...I..brutish was not the right word, um, I'm sorry...I am afraid the thought of war...Well I could not do it"
Monty continues to walk, occasionally glancing over to the side at Sola as she speaks. He lifts a paw, scratching at his half-ear, and he gives a shake of his head, smiling to try and reassure the flustered doe. "Oh, no need for apologies, miss, m'well aware of th'reputation th'place has, doesn't help when all th'stories y'hear are of us fendin' off some vermin attack from th'seas, or holdin' off vermin tryin' t'take over th'mountain." He chuckles. "Bloodwrath," he finishes her sentence. "Yeah, t'be honest, th'ol' badger that runs th'place now, he hasn't had t'deal with that for awhile. Thank goodness, it's not a pretty sight." The hare gives a light shrug, "And yeah, sometimes I wonder if I made th'right decision t'leave home an' join th'Patrol. An' when I see th'faces of those we helped in some way, it totally makes me realize why I did."
Sola was headed for the gazebo, she liked the quiet gardens usually but right now her brain is frazzled. She nods when he mentions bloodwrath. Yes, that was what she had tried to say. She relaxes a tiny bit as he doesn't seem to have taken offence to her rambling "It is wrong of me to focus on my fear of..." vermin, fighting, occasionally her own shadow "Well, everything. When you do so much good there" she's speaking very carefully and slowly there so she feels a bit more in control of her own words "What made you decide to join?"
Monty follows Sola as she makes her way in the direction of the gazebo. She knows more about the place than he does, and she's the one giving the tour, so...he figures it's best to simply be a good guest and follow. He gives a shake of his head to the doe's words. "Hmm. Not at all. You...went through a terrible situation, dealt with a lotta stuff that a goodbeast should never have t'deal with." The small hare shifts his eyes to Sola, "That's part o'the reason I joined, t'stop th'things that happened t'you from happenin' to others." He gives a light shrug, and a sigh. "And, also cuz my dad had always wanted t'join. Never got th'opportunity for one reason or another, so...when I was born, he wanted t'make darn sure that I grew up t'be a Patroller." He chuckles weakly, "And whatta y'know, here I am."
"No on did stop it" Sola replies with a note of fury that's unusual for her. She catches herself though and takes a deep breath "But had they known we were there they would have and I am certain you have saved many beasts from such fates" she sighs heavily "The past is the past" she finally looks back at him again "Your father got his wish. Do you...enjoy it?...Or perhaps would you now be an artist if not for that?"
Monty notes Sola's tone and the anger in her voice, and the hare reaches out a comforting paw to rest on her shoulder. "It is indeed a shame that no one came t'your aid, miss. If...we were aware of what was happenin', we'd be th'first ones t'go out an' try and do what we could t'help, f'sure." Monty gives her a smile. "My hope is that, from our actions, we did indeed help those who happened t'find themselves in a spot o'trouble. But yes, things that happened in th'past can't really be changed now. Believe me, that's somethin' I've found disappointin' m'self." He shrugs. To the question about whether or not he enjoyed it, Monty nods simply. "Aye, yeah, joinin' th'patrol's th' best decision I ever made. Had a few rough spots here n'there..." He wiggles his half-ear with a grin. "But it's not somethin' I wasn't expectin', y'know." The question about whether or not he'd be an artist gets an amused look. "Eh, more'n likely not. Started drawin' at th'mountain while out on leave from bein' injured. If I wouldn't've
joined th'Patrol, I'd be back home, farmin' with m'family."
Sola startles slightly at the touch, tensing up but she quickly moves to place a paw on his arm just to reassure that it's fine "I know, really. I'm certain you would have been the first to charge in bravely and rescue everyone" she makes a little amused noise "Starting with all the pretty damsels of course" the ear wiggle makes her laugh quietly "I don't believe anyone plans to lose half an ear" she moves her own tattered ear a tiny bit. She slowly nods afterwards "Well I am glad you are happy. It, um, must not be so bad there. A more adventurous life than farming certainly but with enough peace to draw...Your friend said you had brought drawings with you?"
Monty jumps a little as well in return as the paw is placed on his arm, his eyes shifting down towards it as a blush creeps up into his cheeks. "Oh, uh. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely! I, um, it's...somethin'...I totally woulda done. It's...I, uh, I...mean...I...woulda rescued anyone who needed it, not just, um...not just damsels, y'know..." he chuckles, the hare shifting from footpaw to footpaw. "And I, uh, coulda lost th'whole ear, so yeah, I guess you could try n'look at it positively I s'pose." He shakes his head, "It's really not bad at all. We have t'best food you could ask for aside from Redwall itself...an'...most of th'time, everyone is pretty decent. Though y'have th'drama stuff that always tends t'creep up anytime y'put a bunch o'fightin hares all in the same place t'gether t'live." As his drawings are mentioned again, Monty blinks, before he nods with a sheepish grin. "Oh, uh...yeah. I did. Didn't think anyone'd really be that interested t'see em though..."
Sola hesitates and stares at his arm with her paw on it for a moment before she awkwardly starts to remove it "Um" she has no words. Moving on! She slowly nods when he says he could of lost the entire ear "We lived. Some days that's all you can hope for" another awkward pause and she presses on "I never did visit that Redwall place though I had heard of it. The food here tends to be quite fancy but there are some places in the village where you can sit alone and just enjoy something simpler" she chuckles lightly at mention of drama "That is not limited to fighting hares. The castle staff are always in a gossip about who is dating who" she shakes her head but looks amused before she looks back at him and there's a smile to her eye for his grin "I would be most interested. Do you have many from Salamandastron or your travels?"
Monty also doesn't mention her paw on his arm, finding it's likely best simply to not acknowledge that it had happened...it'd likely only cause the hare to fall back into his stuttering and flustered self. And he's bad enough as it is! Nodding his head, he gives the doe a smile. "Aye, we did. And yeah, it is. Sometime stuff happens that y'can't really control, y'know? So no use worryin' about it." He laughs as the castle drama is mentioned, "Yeah, I...never really involved m'self in that sorta nonsense, y'know. Total waste o'time t'be flappin' yer lips about who likes who n'who said wot about whoever." As Sola mentions wanting to see his drawings, he blushes in spite of himself. "Wait, really? You would?" he blinks. "Oh, uh. Okay. I mean, they're mostly from back home at th'mountain, though I did break out th'pad o'paper on our travels when things got a little quiet."
Sola tilts her head and sounds amused at the 'flapping yer lips' bit "It has a certain entertainment. From an outside perspective of course. I'm surprised you aren't the talk of the mountain with a line of does desiring attention" she sounds quite genuine in her belief that he should be. She gestures to a seat in the gazebo at his surprise in her interest at drawing "Of course" she says as she sits "I won't get to see many places. You can at least show me your home"
Monty laughs and waves a paw nonchalantly, "Yeah, I try t'leave the gossipin' t'th' old haremaids in th'village. I...um..." When Sola suggests that he is in fact one that might appear appealing to does in the mountain, his expression shifts for a moment, as he does his best to keep the smile upon his muzzle. His ear droops, "Well. I mean, er...no, not in particular. I mean, if I was, believe me I'd be th'first t'tell ya, heh..." He gives his shoulders a shrug, which droop just a little. "But, eh, I suppose not a lot o'does take an interest inna one-eared scarred-up hare who got bonked in the noggin one too many times an' is halfway t'crazyville..." Monty gives a weak smile. "Is a long story. But, er...yeah. Yeah, I'd love t'show ya my drawings, Sola." He sets his satchel down on the ground, rooting around before he withdraws a small sketchpad.
Sola looks confused for a second that he wouldn't be the catch of the town until he says why and only recognition shows. She goes to place that paw back on his arm again "I know that one well. No bucks have any interest in a one-eared scarred-up doe who has spent the better part of her life getting /out/ of crazyville...and never quite escaped the outskirts" a small pause and she hehs and looks down "Of course if they had they would have discovered I was painfully boring...or been pushed away because they are clearly insane themselves" a light sigh but her eye focuses on him as she pauses "It takes someone different to see past the scars we can't stop focusing on" a little glance down and she then looks to the satchel as he gets his sketchpad out "I hope you are as good as your friend suggested"
Monty's eyes shift down and land upon where Sola's paw comes to rest again. He rubs his arm with a paw, "Huh. Sounds like me'n'you have a little more in common than we though, eh?" he chuckles. "All I gotta say is, there's a lot more t'someone than what y'can see on th'outside. Any buck who can't see that is pretty foolish, lemme tell ya. I...don't know ya too well an' I'm not gonna pretend I do, but, so far t'me y'seem like a perfectly lovely individual, not borin' in th'least. Th'king seems happy t'have ya around..." Monty glances back up and gives the doe a smile. "I supposed y'could say I've kinda been runnin' around on th'outskirts tryin' t'find my way back in." His eyes shift back down to his sketchbook, and he opens it and begins to skim over the pages. Finally, he comes to the sketches and drawings he'd done of the inside of Salamandastron...the kitchen, the mess hall, the rec room. "This is Salamandastron," he explains, as he shoes the doe the drawings.
"Apparently so" Sola replies to their similarities with a small laugh before she shakes her head "I don't blame them for not trying though, there are pretty does who must not hide their faces for them to choose from...You however are a warrior. Your scars are your experience. They make you look rugged" she sounds like she approves though the mention of trying to return to crazyville makes her give a little note of amusement "I would not recommend it" her attention finally goes to the drawings and she looks at them with interest, showing surprise at the rec room one "You have a bar there! And that kitchen may be bigger than ours"
Monty continues to slowly flip through the pictures...there are multiple ones of the infirmary and recovery room...Monty had spent quite a bit of time in both places, and so he had plenty of sketches of them. There are a handful of sketches of various other Parol hares...Jinora, Riley, Adrian, various random others. "Well then, they are missin' out is wot I say," he replies, with a shrug. "Anyone who actually takes some time t'sit down an' talk t'you would know that. But, er...yeah, so...here's...more of th'mountain...here's th'garden..." He looks down at the pages as he shows them, before looking back up at Sola to see her reaction to his work. At the mention of him being rugged, he blinks, a little more of that blush coloring his cheeks at the compliment. "Aw, phooey, I'm not rugged at all. M'prolly th'least rugged you'd ever see..." he chuckles, before his eyes return back down to his sketches.
Sola is completely enamoured with the drawings and she actually comes down to sit on the ground so she can take them as he shows them off and then put them in a very neat pile. She does of course look at the hares in them but even if Greg was there she'd never recognise him with how much he's changed "These are amazing...and there's so many hares" she immediately looks at the garden one when he offers it, her eye going a little wider "You were selling your gardens short. I see benches, flowers, they look so peaceful" she doesn't look away from the drawings as she leads over and goes to give him a little nudge with her elbow "If I say you're rugged, you're rugged. You can't argue with does about these things" she says with a little laugh.
Monty did have a drawing or two of Greg in the sketchbook, but like she figured, she more than likely wouldn't recognize him...especially from a simple drawing. Monty seems quite pleased that his new friend seems to be enjoying the drawings. He'd never really fancied himself to be particularly good, and so the praise does make him feel pretty good about all the time he'd spent on the activity. There is a wide smile upon his muzzle, though his cheeks are a little on the pink side, and he averts his gaze to fiddle with the ends of his uniform. "...well, uh, I mean, I guess if rugged is a -good- thing, then...that's fine, I s'pose..." he chuckles. "But yeah, the garden's nice! It's where I'd usually go to try n'unwind, it kinda puts me in a better headspace, y'know?"
Sola doesn't quite realise quite what she's doing. She used to be confident, years ago before everything happened "Of course rugged is a good thing" She sounds amused her eye remains on the drawings, looking through them with interest "You are fortunate your gardens don't frequently get taken over by some dinner function or something as they do here" she finally looks up at him again and sees the awkwardness again and automatically assumes that's probably due to her "But, um, not that there is anything wrong with dinner functions...though they aren't intended for staff to enjoy. I suppose your visit here is somewhat of a function as visiting envoys from a different kingdom...or...lord...dom" she looks puzzled "What do they call it when it's not ruled by a king? There must be some name for it...Oh, but I was suppose to be giving you a tour and" she looks at the gardens a little flustered "well I haven't told you anything"
Monty shifts his gaze back up towards Sola, the hare smiling in spite of himself as he watches her begin to stumble over her words just as badly as he tends to most of the time. "Uh...yeah, I s'pose it is. Kinda a goodwill thing, sorta, between th'two areas. I mean, o'course, it totally ended up turnin' into a rescue mission, but hey...just comes with th'territory I guess of bein' in th'Patrol." He gives a light shrug. He grins as the tour is brought up, the two of them obviously having gotten sidetracked by Monty's drawings. "Oh, uh, right, right, the tour. That...was a thing...that, um...was supposed to be happening. So like...feel free to, um...to...start the tour!" The hare gives his companion a grin, a paw rubbing at his half-ear in the process.
Sola flusters easily and realising she wasn't following the king's suggestion is more than enough to set her off worrying. She quickly looks around "Um, well, um. These are the gardens. Most of this was planted by King, um..." King Um the mighty! No, probably not. She struggles for a moment as she doesn't usually do the tour and while she's heard the history told to many visitors right now it's fleeing her memory "King...Alvin...the third...I think" she makes a frustrated noise and flattens her ears with her paws "They don't normally have me talk to guests and clearly with good reason" she suddenly looks up and points to a tree as she remembers something "They made that tree so that it grows apples and pears...The pears were a gift from the southern tribes when they agreed to a truce"
Monty listens intently, unable to really hide the grin upon his muzzle as Sola seems to get so flustered over things. "Hey, it's...it's really no big deal if you can't remember, like, everythin'. I mean, just th'important stuff is fine. There's not gonna be like, a tour rating at the end or anythin'..." he chuckles. "Besides, yer doin' just fine." He glances over at the tree as it is mentioned, nodding his head slowly. "Pears? Gotcha. So...that's pretty much a special tree, then?"
"If I could remember anything it would be an improvement. I could imagine the rating, one out of ten, just about remembered what a tree was" Sola says with some frustration before she tries to compose herself with a sigh "Yes, the tree was supposed to signify a new start and partnership between the kingdom and the chieftains" she says carefully as she's trying to recall the details before she shakes her head "It didn't really work though and the tree lasted longer than the peace...They, um, fight among themselves a lot"
Monty waves a paw, "Aw, nonsense..." he chuckles. "You will get nothing but an absolutely glowin' review, I promise." He hmms, nodding his head in understanding. "Hmm. Yeah, that tends to happen a lot, really, everywhere. Everyone tends t'end up havin' more differences than they originally thought, and then things kinda start to split apart eventually. Still, as long as things are still generally peaceful, y'know?" he smiles, as they begin to walk further into the garden. The hare takes a look around as the walk, taking in the various surroundings.
Sola gets up and starts to walk as well, following along behind him "Then you are far too kind. Why his majesty would give me the job is a mystery" she really doesn't know. She nods along to his words and one moment she's thinking of the tribes and the worry of potential war but the next she slowly looks at him "Yes, everything similar splits eventually..." she frowns slightly, a little sad "You leave tomorrow" that's come out of nowhere.
Monty walks for a little while longer, simply enjoying the time spent in a generally peaceful environment, especially after the things that they'd already dealt with on the trip so far. As Sola looks at him and speaks, Monty's head tilts a little, his gaze shifting over to her and watching her for a few moments. "Yeah. S'a fact o'life, I suppose, an' not a very fun one, m'afraid. T's why ya gotta make th'best of the time y'have, y'know?" he shrugs, before he nods to her statement, with a sigh, himself. "...yeah, we do. Gotta head back out n'continue th'mission, y'know. Duty calls, n'all that..." he gives her a sheepish smile, the hare's ear giving a flick.
Sola finally seems to realise she's been acting weird. Or at least weird for her. For a second she looks confused until realisation hits her and she straightens up and looks scared. She takes a step back as she starts to babble "I-I'm sorry, this is inappropriate. You...you're a guest and you're leaving and so young and and...I called you rugged" it's like she's only just remembering what she's been saying and is mortified with herself "and I was flirting, I...I'm sorry, I didn't, I..." she backs up a few more steps "I don't...I never..." panic!
Monty doesn't really seem to be off-put or angered at all by the stammering doe and her confessions, the hare merely watching her quietly as she continues to ramble on. As she finishes, he reaches out a comforting paw to rest on her arm, giving her shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "...hey, look, it's...it's fine. I mean, really, it is. Nothin' you said or did was inappropriate, Sola...if it was, I woulda totally letcha know at the time. It's just...I mean, it's kinda like you said. We're leavin', and I, um. I didn't really wanna say anythin that might give ya th'wrong idea..." His gaze travels down for a moment as he stares at his footpaws, his cheeks turning a deep red. "It's fine, I mean, I'm not used t'does actually showin' any interest, so, y'know...it's actually kinda a nice change." He gives Sola a smile as he lifts his eyes again.
Sola doesn't calm so easily, she did say she was living on the edge of crazyville "It's not fine! I'm just deceiving and lying and I can't wear this, I can't pretend to be this, I can't be normal, I can't" somewhere in her distressed ramblings she started pulling off the cloth around her head and her glasses to throw them at a bush. She has several smaller scars but the main ones are definitely the slice taken out of her nose and the cut down her cheek which slices through her lips so a little bit of the teeth behind can be seen. The worst is a deep cut starting on her forehead and curving deliberately under her eye close enough to blind it. It is however also clear that she's older than him. Most of the grey hairs in her long brown headfur might have been stress related, without the scars she would have aged gracefully. It only takes her looking at him for her to realise what she's doing and it's like a switch is flipped and she freezes. She closes her eyes after a moment before just turning away, going to make
She closes her eyes after a moment before just turning away, going to make it so he doesn't have to look at it as the back of her head is fine "I...I don't...I...I have no excuse"
Monty is momentarily taken aback by the doe's sudden outburst. He takes a step back, watching with a sympathetic expression as Sola finally seems to snap and discards the things that had been hiding her injuries. As they are revealed, Monty doesn't seem to be horrified or sickened by the doe's injuries...he frowns, though more out of anger at whoever could do such things to someone else than at any particular feelings towards Sola. "Sola, none of this was your fault. You have nothin' to apologize for, and I understand why you felt the need to cover yourself up the way you did." He approaches the doe, also noting that she seems to be a few seasons older. Still, it doesn't change the fact of anything that had happened so far during the Patrol's time there, and his time with Sola. He reaches his paws over to rest them on the backs of her shoulders in a comforting gesture. "You don't need one, Sola. Nothing you've shown me just now changes who you are. It may have changed your physical appearance, but you are, n'
'always will be, the same doe you've always been."
Sola is shaking slightly. She hadn't snapped and broken like that in a long time but then all she ever did was keep herself busy with work. She tenses when he touches her. She doesn't look back at him but her ear turns back as she's clearly listening. The last bit strikes a cord hard and her paws come up to cup her muzzle and muffle a quiet sob. She can't do anything but stand there and cry for a moment but finally she manages to get out some words "That's all I ever wanted to be"
Monty has more often than not been on the other side of things, and if there was anyone at all who could relate to the doe, it's him. His paws give Sola's shoulders a gentle, reassuring squeeze, before the buck steps forward and embraces her. His chin comes to rest on her shoulder, his arms wrapping around her middle, and he stands this way for awhile, not really saying much at all and just letting Sola get out whatever it was she needed to get out. Hopefully his presence there is enough to help, at least a little. Eventually, he speaks, his voice quiet and reassuring...an unusual thing for the usually nervous and boisterous buck. "You don't need to hide yourself, anymore. Show em who you really are, and if they can't deal with it, it's on them, and not you."
Sola for once doesn't tense at the touch when he gets closer and she actually leans against him, her head going to rest against his while she cries and tries to be very quiet about it. It takes her a few minutes to let the tears calm her down before finally she's silent again with just the occasional sniff. Her ear moves and lightly bumps into his and then moves back again when he talks. A little sniff and eventually she refinds her quiet voice "I used to try...The stares...and the mirrors...I just wanted to forget it ever happened"
Monty allows a warm smile to slide onto his muzzle as Sola doesn't slip away and actually does the opposite, leaning into his embrace, and the buck very gently gives her head a light bump with his own as she rests it against his. His arms give another reassuring squeeze, Monty's ear giving a twitch and bumping back against the doe's. "But, it -did- happen, and it is a part of who you are, now. As painful as it might be, there's really nothing you can do to change that. It's made ya stronger, though, when it coulda had the opposite effect and made ya completely broken. That's a credit t'how strong y'really are, Sola. And now, y'don't need t'hide yourself, you can show the entire kingdom what y'dealt with, and they c'n truly see how unbreakable y'are."
Sola's eye starts to look teary again (The blind eye remains dry, too damaged for tears) as he says it did happen. She looks at the sky and takes a little shaky breath to calm herself. She suddenly laughs and this time her paws come up to cup her muzzle to keep from some insane hysterical laughter bubbling out. It doesn't take her so long to contain that but she is still smiling when she speaks "I'm sorry. I don't think now's the time to say I'm not broken. I did throw my glasses in to a bush" she snerks as she finds that funny but she brings a paw to her mouth to stop that getting any further than a smirk.
Monty allows a small grin to crack his muzzle, the buck laughing as well at the sudden moment of levity. "Aye, that y'did, miss." His paws slip from around her middle, the buck making his way over to retrieve Sola's glasses. He searches for a moment, before eventually finding them, and he brings them back over to the doe, holding them out to her with a smile. "Welp, here ya go. Didn't toss em -too- far, really. Y'got a good arm though," he jokes.
Sola is all over the place. One moment she's losing it and crying, the next she's losing it and laughing instead. She has too much she's never dealt with and can't help but be a bit insane. She finally turns when he moves away so she can see where he's going but just smiles as he gets her glasses "It's all those mines they had us digging in" she jokes back before she suddenly pauses, distracted "Ooh, I joked about the mines...I mentioned the mines. Ohh, that's different. I feel fine. This is weird" it feels like her mind has skipped on to a different track and it's fascinating and distracting to her. She takes the glasses but doesn't put them on. The world's a bit blurry without them but she just doesn't feel like hiding behind them.
Monty eyes Sola as she shuffles through all her emotions, the buck giving a chuckle and a shake of his head. "Good, I'm...glad you're startin' to feel better. And there aren't any more mines for you to have to worry about, so..." he shrugs. "Yer perfectly safe here, and don't have to worry about any of that stuff ever again." As he reaches out to hand her the glasses, his paw brushes over hers, and it causes him to smile, hesitating a little before handing them over finally. "So, um. Is...that the tour, then?" he asks, jokingly, his ear perking, the other one just sorta hanging there.
Sola pauses, testing out her new found freedom but after a few seconds where nothing comes out she concludes "Can't joke about the torture" she looks a little surprised "Can mention it..." a firm frown "Still don't want to talk about it" she suddenly smiles at him "Baby steps" she's all excited which is really strange and new to her. She goes to take his paw after she's got the glasses "Oh sure, the entire castle is just this one bit of the gardens" sarcasm! "Come on. You wanted to see paintings"
Monty allows Sola to take his paw and lead him off towards where the paintings are, the hare laughing as well. "Alright, alright, I'm going, I'm going! You're gonna squeeze m'paw clean off if you're not careful..." He then follows after the doe, feeling a smile growing upon his muzzle for some reason...
Sola hurries a little more when he says that as she shoots a grin at him, which looks slightly odd with the split lips "I said scars were rugged, I'm just trying to improve you further" it's not far inside before she stops by a wall and just opens it up to reveal a little passageway behind the walls. She doesn't really think anything of it, going to pull him after her and start to lead the way through a little maze behind the grand rooms everyone else gets to see.
Monty cannot help but grin at Sola's excitement as she drags him along the path, and his interest is perked as they stop near the wall. "Um, there's...no way to go. We...ohhhhh..." he blinks in surprise as the secret passageway is revealed, and the hare grins, giving the doe a nudge. "Oh, that is very interesting, a hidden passage, eh? Love it..." he chuckles, before he eeeps and has no choice but to follow, as his paw is being tugged.
Sola blinks back at his interest before the sudden realisation that others would like the passages. She laughs as she drags him on "It's the servants ways!" which might explain why it's so clean "Some nobles, probably some royals too, feel that servants shouldn't ever be seen unless they're asked for. They still want us to clean the place of course! There's passages all over the place for us...Plus a few hidden ones and safe rooms for the royal family. Your mountain doesn't have them?...I mean, I suppose a badger may not need a room to hide in but surely...Well, no..does your lord even have servants?" she questions as she leads on through the maze. There's plenty of doors all over and she has to lead up a narrow spiral staircase until she finally comes to the door she wants. A quick peek through a hole in the wall to check the coast is clear and she opens it on to the long gallery, the door opening behind a painting. The room itself is filled with small stainglass windows on one side and the other is all paintin
The room itself is filled with small stainglass windows on one side and the other is all paintings. Mostly monarchs and nobles but a few groups or landscapes. Many of them are very old having been painted in the rein of previous kings.
Monty is grinning from ear to ear as he is dragged around by his new friend, and he tries his best to take everything in before he is dragged off to somewhere else. It seems as if Sola never really got the opportunity to give an actual tour of the place to someone who was actually interested, and not just a formality thing. Her excitement makes him chuckle in amusement. "Well, t'be honest, never really asked if there are hidden passages n'rooms in th'mountain. But I'm more'n willin' to bet there are, I just never really got th'opportunity to explore and find out for m'self." He gives a shrug. "And nope, we don't have servants in th'mountain. We're not really a castle, we're more of a military institution, an' so...we basically do all the chores n'other things a servant would likely do." As they come to the door and move out into the gallery, the hare gasps as his eyes fall upon those paintings. Wide-eyed, he moves in a slow circle as he takes everything in. "....wow...." he breathes. "These are amazing." He g
grins down at Sola, before his gaze returns to the paintings.
Sola doesn't give tours at all in general. She's the silent servant who appears when needs they vanishes again when no one's looking. Carrying a conversation typically wasn't her strong point "You should find some secret places in your mountain, they make excellent escape routes from uncomfortable situations" she stops to let him take in the room of artwork, looking exceedingly happy that he seems to like it so much "This is just the important kings and the best bits of the collection. Even here there's not enough wall space for everything" she grins back when he looks at her and then looks at the paintings too "The best artists in the land are supposed to have painted all of these"
Monty eyes Sola for a moment with a grin. "So you are automatically assuming that I put myself in uncomfortable situations that I would then need to escape from...." he laughs, reaching over to give the doe a playful nudge. "...maybe I do, maybe I don't. But yes. It would be useful." He begins to slowly meander around the room, his gaze fixed upwards at all those paintings. He had developed a fascination with such things while injured and off duty, and to actually see said things in person was definitely a treat for him...one need only look at his overjoyed expression to tell. "...yeah, I can totally tell. I absolutely love these, Sola. Thank you for showing me this..."
Sola stifles a giggle and turns it in to a smirk at the first but "Now that's not what I meant...but yes. If you're going to be entirely like me in apparently every way then the entire world will be your awkward encounter" there's a lot of posh squirrel paintings due to the royal family but a few groups too, a painting of the castle from across the forest, various battles with exaggerated heroes and monstrous vermin. Sola can't help but love his enthusiasm and starts to grin again "Perhaps they'll inspire your work. I'm unsure how much harder it is to paint than it is to draw" she looks back at the paintings and points to one of otters dancing like crazy beasts around a fire "That one is probably my favourite...Though King Felip over there is a close second. His frame is the easiest to dust"
Monty gives Sola a smile and a nod, "Oh, believe me. I know alllll about awkward encounters. As a matter of fact, 'awkward' may just be my middle name." He laughs. "Actually it's Alexander Reginald William Baxter, but hey, what's one more added on, y'know?" The buck continues onwards, looking at each and every painting that is pointed out to him. As the reach the one with the dancing otters, Monty grins. "That one is very...enthusiastic..." he laughs. "Captures the spirit of otters perfectly, though. I love it." He glances over towards the other one she mentions, and he nods. "Very regal..." He slowly wanders in that direction. "Hmm, maybe they will give me a bit of inspiration. That's somethin' I've been...sorely lackin', lately, m'afraid." He sighs, before turning and moving back over towards Sola.
Sola laughs quietly at the list of names "It always seemed to me like hares could not decide upon a name so they used them all...I don't actually have one. A middle name that is" another little laugh "Greg made up his himself. I never felt the need..." she gestures at the otter painting "That was my childhood. No mountains of well regimented hares simply chaotic otters" it doesn't sound like she considers that a bad thing "Enthusiastic is a poor description of the joyous insanity and infectious...life" she smiles so much for a moment it turns in to a flash of regret before she turns towards him and swiftly moves on from that thought "I imagine that a life marching the road in search of hares would not leave much time for artwork...or is it something else which keeps you from drawing?"
Monty gives a sigh, his gaze shifting up to the painting that is currently right in front of him. He turns to face it, and stares up quietly at it for awhile, turning his thoughts over in his mind as he tries to best thing of a way to answer the question. "...well, the traveling is certainly part of it," he sighs. "But there are a multitude o'things that kinda keeps me from returnin' to it, I suppose." He shrugs. "Mebbe a bit of a lack o'confidence n m'self, I dunno. Never really been too high on m'self an' my abilities, t'be honest with ya. I mean, I've tried doin' a couple here and there while out there, just t'see if I still have th'touch. They didn't turn out th'greatest, really..."
Sola is silent and patient. She can tell he's thinking and doesn't interrupt that. This time it's her turn to step forward as he talks. She goes to place her paw on his shoulder. There's a long pause as she's trying to find the right words "Everything is built on the back of practice...Which isn't to say you're not good, I couldn't do what you do. I thought your drawings were amazing...I just mean...It's...it's like your fighting. You're not born fighting it must be learnt" she looks at the paintings "These are your...sword masters" she's not sure if that's a real thing "Experts in their field but all we get to see is the finished picture. You don't see the twelve squirrels with a funny nose they drew first or the hours they spent painting it...You could do paintings like these. I do really think you could...I mean, if you wanted to"
Monty startles just a little as he feels the paw descending onto his shoulder, and he lifts his gaze and settles it on Sola. Despite the initial surprise, he doesn't pull away. "Oh. Well, um. You...you really think so? I mean, I...honestly have no idea if or when I'd ever have the time to do something like this..." He gestures towards the painting, before he shifts his gaze back towards it and stares for a few minutes longer. "...I mean...unless I..." he hesitates, his expression one of conflict as he looks from the painting, to Sola, then back. "...unless I retired, and...stayed here..." he replies, his words carrying a questioning air, as if he is truly wondering about the possibility of leaving the Patrol and remaining here.
Sola smiles at first "Of course" she really does believe he could paint. She tilts her head as he hesitates before her face wipes in to a look of surprise as he even considers staying "You...I..." she's flustered again and mentally stumbles around for words "I..." hesitantly she withdraws her paw from his shoulder "I can't make you do that" she nervously says as if it was entirely her fault.
Monty turns to face Sola as she withdraws her paw. He steps forward, reaching down to try and take the paw into both of his. "...I...I mean, you wouldn't be making me do anything, Sola. I've...thought about something like this for a long time, ever since the last time I got injured, and...I mean, look at me fer Dark Forest's sake. I am a mess. From th'moment I joined th'Patrol, even th'first Patrol I went on, I ended up gettin' myself hurt. For awhile, I...I lost m'brain, was completely n'utterly mad. 'Mad Monty', they called me." He frowns, his gaze dropping. "Got decommissioned because of it, an' only got reactivated after a season or two cuz more bodies were needed." A heavy sigh makes his shoulders droop. "...I...I dunno how much longer I c'n do this, Sola. Earlier in our mission, I was forced t'kill a hare we'd recruited, cuz he'd gone mad. I had t'take the life of a hare with me own paws. I just...I can't..." Tears well up in his eyes, as he bites his lip. "I don't think I c'n do this anymore..."
Sola doesn't resist her paw being taken or move away and she just looks so sad as he explains. Her ears fold back and flatten at the Mad Monty bit and she steps closer. By the time he's describing having to kill the other hare she's already going to hug him. She's horrified and saddened for him. She went though a lot but never had to kill anyone "I'm sorry" she mutters as she moves to hug him tight and rest her head on his, burying her nose in to his fur as she speaks "I can't imagine how hard...I just can't. I'm sorry you...you shouldn't have had to do that. It's not your fault"
Monty accepts the hug, that being more than likely what he really needed at that point. He wraps his arms around the doe, hugging her tight as he buries his face between her ears. He merely stands that way for awhile, glad to be able to get all of that out. It felt odd telling all those things to someone who was practically a stranger, yet for some reason, Monty felt as if he'd known Sola for his entire life. Their conversation, the joking around, even the hug...it all seemed to feel natural. After a short while, he pulls back, his arms still around her as he peers down at her. "...that is...the one thing I never thought I'd be able to do.
When it comes to killing vermin, it's easy. They all deserve it for what they do to others. But when it's someone who had no hand in the way he ended up, and having to take his life to end his suffering...I...it was just...it was almost impossible. But I did it. We had to move on, so I did it."
Sola gives him whatever time he needs, just holding on to him. She didn't eve like to really be touched usually but this, with him, was comfortable and she couldn't explain that. She looks up at his eyes when he moves. Still looking so sad she moves a paw out of the hug so she can stroke his cheek with it "To end suffering, suffering that wasn't going to end or madness that would hurt others...ending that is no bad thing...You shouldn't have had to b-but...it was the right thing to do...Not the easy thing. Never the easy thing...but the right thing...If he understood...If it were me, if I understood what was happening to me...I-I remember madness. I couldn't live lost in that fog if there was no way out"
Monty nods his head slowly, the hare peering down at Sola as she speaks. As her paw touches his cheek, he finds himself leaning into her touch, his eyes closing. "Yes. Believe me, I can totally understand, m'self. I've been there, in that particular headspace, an' it is not fun. If I was ever stuck that way for longer n'I was, I...I dunno if I'd be able t'deal with it. I was lucky I came outta my situation the way I did. It was touch n go there for a long time. Didn't know which way was up r down. Was seein' things, hearin' birds talkin' to me. It...it was chillin'." His eyes meet Sola's and lock there, as they open once again.
Sola can't help a tiny smile when he leans into her paw but with the topic it doesn't last long "Everything was vermin to me. Every tree hid them, every shadow was them. They followed and watched, hunting constantly. Any rest was a time to be caught...losing all sense of day and time...always running" her voice slows down as she stares back at him, distracted even despite the conversation. She finds herself leaning in closer, nervously stopping but then going to actually kiss him.
Monty finds himself slowly nodding, as his gaze remains steadfastly locked with the doe's. Her scars and deformities didn't seem to mean a thing to the hare...he'd seen the heart she possessed, that kindness she'd show him despite still hurting from all she'd been through, and to him that was absolutely perfect. "...yes, I...I understand. I..." He is very briefly surprised by the kiss, eyes going wide for a moment...but then after that moment passes, he sinks back down and leans into the kiss. He holds it for an extra moment or two, his arms still wrapped around her, and everything he had just spoken of, of all the things he'd been through, all seem to melt away as he stands there embracing Sola.
Sola keeps the kiss for several seconds, long enough that if anyone else saw the talk would be up and down the castle before morning. She doesn't move away when it finally stops and for a second she just stares back at him again before she suddenly grins and there's a little red flush of embarrassment in her ears. She goes to rest her head on his chest to hide there "Oh but this is insanity in itself" she jokes with a little laughter in her voice "I met you only today...You can't change your life over that"
Monty figured if the two were spotted, the rumors would likely begin to spread amongst the castle like wildfire. He really doesn't seem to care, however, keeping Sola held in his arms as he simply looks her in the eye, his own ear(s) flushing red. "...would it surprise ya t'know, that's the first time I've ever kissed anyone, besides my mum?" he teases, lightly. "Completely worth the wait. Heh." The buck grins down at her as she rests her head on his chest. "Hmm. Well, there are far worse ways to describe bouts of insanity, I'd say this is one of the better ones, yeah?" Monty laughs. Her words seem to sober him a little more, as he sighs. "...aye, I understand. But what ya have t'understand is, this isn't somethin' I completely decided right now. You are definitely th'reason I'd want to stay, now, though. And you're givin me more than enough reason to. I just....I...dunno what Adj would have to say about it. He's my best friend."
Sola makes a little amused noise "Less than it would probably surprise you to know that was the first time /I've/ kissed anyone" she was young when she ended up in slavery. The whole idea of dating has been a struggle since. Another little laugh "Worth the wait...I could live with a madness like this" or she'd be very tempted to but it does seem entirely insane. Falling for a beast in a day is for stories. A deep breath and she looks back up at him, he smile turning a little sad "Your friends..." another deep breath to try and calm her feelings down enough to try and be what she considers sensible "They'll need you. At the very least you should talk to them...And perhaps if after talking to them you happen to turn around and come back or I come up with some excuse to go to Salamandastron...and the nerve to travel there...then..." her smile brightens a little again.
Monty gives a heavy sigh, knowing that the whole reason they'd even made this trip was to find recruits for the Patrol and not return home with one less hare than they started with. Still, he'd also been told that if he'd somehow found some sort of happiness while out on the mission, that he should try and pursue it. And so Monty is torn. "...I...I will talk to them, let them know what I told you. Perhaps they might understand..." He bites his lip for a moment. Something she says makes him look right back up at her again. "Come with us!" he replies, his voice tinged with excitement. "I mean, the reason I'm even here is to bring hares back with me to the mountain, yeah? So...you're a hare, yeah?" He grins. "And, an added bonus, you get to see your brother again!" He slips free from the embrace, both his paws slipping into the doe's as he gives them a squeeze.
Sola immediately looks worried at the suggestion and her eye turns to the floor. She squeezes his paws back still "Monty...I...You're on a mission, travelling...you found danger in Southsward...outside the kingdom there's" she sighs "I need you to understand that...I want to. I...I like you, more than I've ever felt before. Enough that I want to ignore everything and say yes..." it takes her a moment to force out the "But" a big sigh and she closes her eyes "Out there are vermin. Everywhere and I can't...The slightest bit of danger and I don't think I could handle it again"
Monty's expression wilts a little more, as the doe pretty much lies out the reality of the situation. His ear(s) droop, gaze dropping to the floor as he listens quietly. A few moments of silence pass, before he finally raises his gaze again. There is a resolute glint there, as he gives the doe a firm nod. "Then I am staying," he replies. "I will speak with my comrades in the morning. I don't think I'm going to find a safer place than this castle, and I don't think I will ever find anyone else who understands what I've had to deal with, better than you. Why, then, should I leave?" The buck smiles. "Do you think the King would approve of me staying, Sola?" He gives her paws a squeeze again. "I could send a letter of resignation back home with Adrian..." he contemplates...
Sola looks seriously surprised when he says he's going to stay before her worried, scared look returns with a vengeance. She isn't worth upheaving his life over. He was young, maybe he couldn't see it now but he would. His friends, his lord, the patrol, everyone would tell him not to and that she was doing this and tricking him in to this. Was she doing this? She's getting herself worked up over the thought that she doesn't deserve this. She steps back, shaking her head "N-no...you can't...you-you just can't, not for me. I'm not worth this, not worth your life" she withdraws her paws as she steps away further "Your father's dreams, your work, your friends, you can't give that up...Just...just..." she suddenly turns in a panic and walks fast for the painting which had the hidden door behind it "This is too much. I can't deserve this"
Aaaand, there it goes. The thing he knew would happen, eventually. Having gone more than a few moments feeling what closely resembled happiness, the buck figured that something had to happen to dash everything and smash it to bits. So there it was. The buck can only stand there and watch Sola turn to go, his shoulders drooping, his ears flat as he tries to think of something to say, some way to call her back and get her to change her mind. But by the time he does, she is gone, the buck's arm extended towards where she'd disappeared. "Sola, come back!" he calls to her. But, she is indeed gone. Slowly, his arm drops back to his side, his face a mask of heartbreak. He turns and begins to shuffle back in the other direction, pausing at the door to peer back at the spot the doe had disappeared to. A sigh heaves in his chest, before he turns and slips back out into the hallway.
Yeah, the shenanigans with the toad-skeleton shall be amusing and endless. Not yet decided whether or not he'll bring it with him upon his eventual return, but...that would be pretty funny, gotta admit.
Ohhhh, okay, I understand what you meant now. Sorry about that, I guess I misunderstood the time period. XD But still, yeah, the scene took place at least a few days after the incident...so Dom had time to find his cave and get settled in n such.
(A bit of a correction...this actually took place about a week or so after the toad incident, hence Konner spending six days out by himself in the swamp til he 'found' Dom's trap, haha. And I made some typos in there as well, ugh. Like in the last post, it's supposed to be 'companion', not 'compation'. XD Thanks to Terrence for being awesome and spoofing poor terrified Konner!)
That will be the general idea at some point I think, once they get around to it. Meanwhile Dom has made himself at home in a cave just outside the marshes, where he's picking off the occasional toad for dinner and living the hermit's life with his best buddy toad-skeleton Blorg. It'd make for a really dark but amusing sitcom!
