Salamandastron: Underground Spring
- -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Salamandastron *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
This is a small, circular room with a pool in the middle - the lifeblood
of Salamandastron. This freshwater spring allows the mountain a water
supply in the event of a siege. The spring bubbles up from the center
(and providing a great assistance to bathing: having the water already
warm). A passage leads slightly uphill to the Store Room for easy
transport of water between the two rooms.

Baatar has slipped down here after he bumped into one of the higher up officers and made mop water go all over him, in fact maybe Baatar should be a runner instead of a fighter as fast as he fled the yelling hare. He then found this place and looks around curious of it.
The door opens and someone very large ducks inside the pool chamber, he walks steadily toward the edge of the ice cold pool and stares down into the water quietly. It is Ciocan, the large badger dressed simply in his armored kilt and a plain copper colored cotton tunic.
Baatar doesn't look over right away and when he does he backs up a little as the badger is much bigger than he is. He remains quiet as he was always told to not speak unless spoken to and this is the main beast in charge of the whole place.
The door opens again only moments later, and an enthusiastic private enters. Throwing a smart salute, he says, "Good day, sah! I captured a prisonah last night, sah, an' will give a full report later, sah!" He then steps back and goes quiet, but it is plain to see the young buck is quite excited to have captured his first vermin prisoner, and so easily, too.
Ciocan turns from his contemplation of the pool of water and looks down at Adrian, "I see... just who have you captured? What did they do to warrant arrest?" His eyes flick to the hares shoulder, "Private... and you sir, Trainee Baatar isn't it? What are you doing lurking down here? This is not a place for idly hanging out, it is... sacred as well as being useful."
Baatar frowns, oh no he's been seen and maybe he shouldn't be here, where ever here is, he gulps "S..Sorry sur, I can leave now sur" He stands taller now and does a clumsy salute, yeah he needs to work on that, and stands there very straight. Well he tries and so far does a very good job.
Adrian stands perfectly straight as well and salutes again. "A fox, sah. She was out on the beach, not even a league from here, sah. Probably a thief. She had bloomin' bag full o' trinkets with 'er, sah, probably stolen property, sah." He drops the salute and continues, "My apologies if I acted rashly, sah. My Mum always said I act foolish in my enthusiasm, sah. I, err... Merely wished ta inform ya as soon as possible, sah."
Ciocan frowns at Adrian and slowly sits down on a rock, "Stay Trainee, and listen" He then focusses his eyes on Adrian, "Do you have proof that the fox was a thief? Did you see her steal the items in her bag? Or have several citizens inform you that she was infact a thief?"
Baatar blinks and almost falls face down on the ground but he catches himself at the last possible moment and nods as he listens, "Yes..sur." He stays where he is standing up again.
Adrian shakes his head. "No full confirmation yet, sah, but she was armed with a bloomin' dagger. I fully intend ta circulate her description around Halyard, sah. If she's been robbin' folks, I'll know very shortly. She was also wearin' a belt of otter fur, sah."
Ciocan drums his fingers on the stone as he leans back, "I see... and you took this to your patrol leader Private? You had your lieutenant’s permission to start circulating her description around Halyard" He tilts his head and regards the hare, "As distasteful as her clothing may be... as unpalatable it is to permit a fox to walk our shores. You arrested her with very little evidence or proof."
Baatar listens as he remains standing; waiting to see what else is said.
Adrian nods his head. "The patrol leader knows about the fox, sah. If cirulatin' her description is a bad idea, though, I will refrain from doin' so, sah. I was lookin' for Majah Tyree ta inform 'im of furthah developments. T'was the Majah that gave me the order ta investigate the mattah in the first place, sah. Somebeast was screamin' on the beach."
Ciocan nods and looks up at the ceiling then he smiles, "Carry on Private, it sounds like you have made all the right choices." He looks down, "You have thought everything through, considered the various options and made the right decision. Well done." he stands up and gestures at the pool, "Do you know the history of this room?"
Baatar walks a little closer he is curious of the history as well, "C..Can I learn the history also?"
Adrian nods, and relaxes just a bit when the badger smiles. "Oh yes sah! I was raised on the story, sah! Lord Stonepaw was very courageous." He doesn't elaborate further, however, opting to allow the recruit to learn the tale from the Badger Lord instead.
A guard steps in and comes to quick attention after looking about, "I see this room is in use."
Ciocan places his paws in his lap and looks over at Baatar, "Of course recruit, if you are to be of the Long Patrol you need to know about its history, and this room is where Lord Stonepaw, the father of Lord Brocktree who wrote most of our laws made his final stand against the beasts of Ungatt Trunn so his brave hares could escape."
Baatar sits down to listen, one does get tired of standing after so long and the badger lord is sitting so why not, "Final..stand?" He asks quietly but doesn't say anymore.
Adrian nods, remarking, "Aye, it was bally well seemingly 'opeless, mate." He goes quiet again, very interested despite knowing the story already.
Ciocan smiles, "Ungatt Trunn and his forces where numerous, the paintings on the wall of the Badger's forge spoke of them being nearly sixty thousand. Lord Stonepaw had ten hares at best. There had been peace for uncounted seasons on the Western Shore, the young hares had left in search of adventure whilst the old remained behind"
Baatar says, "Whoa...and all the vermin were defeated? I am guessing the younger hares came back right?" He is glad there is more hares now, he is unsure how many more though."
Adrian smiles. "Well, there's a bit more to it than that, mate. They needed an awful lot more hares, after all."
Ciocan says, "Indeed they needed a lot of hares, Lord Stonepaw lost his life so the old hares could escape for they had the knowledge and information to help train the younger generation. In the end it took the new Badger Lord, Lord Brocktree himself to reunite the lost hares of the world and reclaim the fire mountain"
Baatar smiles "Wow...both must have been really really powerful, then there most likely not any badger who is not powerful, right sur?"
Ciocan says, "Badgers vary, few of us are drawn to the mountain, many of us are peaceful beasts content to live our lives quietly in the woodlands."
Baatar nods, "Your de only badger I ever seen before sur" He seems to have relaxed, seems the badger is not as scary as he was before.
Adrian nods his head. "Indeed, sah. Like Bella of Brockhall! She was related ta Lord Brocktree, as I recall, sah."
Ciocan says, "Lady Bella was Lord Brocktree's mother, she was one of the founders of Redwall Abbey in the end. But Lord Brocktree laid down the regulations of the Long Patrol and the way the mountain was to be maintained."
Baatar says, "I heard of Redwall Abbey before, never seen the place before. Has anyone from the abbey ever been here before?"
Adrian nods again. "Oh indeed they 'ave, mate. There's been quite a few visits from abbey beasts over the countless seasons. There was even one not too bloomin' long ago, wot. Some trouble with a petty warlord up in Mossflower."
Ciocan says, "Vermin who trouble the abbey are not petty Private Adrian, as the only true bastion of peace and tranquility in the lands we know it is to be defended at all costs. Usually the Long Patrol is too far removed to offer anything but token assistance. But sometimes we the Long Patrol has marched to war to defend the abbey and save it from those who would despoil that peaceful land."
Baatar says, "Peace is always good, let’s hope it bally well last a long time"
Adrian nods. "Yes sah, that is very true. An' so long as the Long Patrol stands, evil will never triumph in the Western Lands, sah. No pirates or warlords or slavers. All will be defeated."
Ciocan says, "Indeed the Long Patrol and the mountain stands to enforce peace here on the Western Lands, from the Mouth of the Moss to south of the great swamp to the mountains to the east. That is the realm that lies beneath our vigilant gaze."
Baatar nods "That’s a lot of land"
Adrian says, "Aye, it is, mate. It's a bloomin' lot ta cover, but somebeast's gotta do flippin' well do it."
Ciocan says, "That is why the hares are called the Long Patrol, and are the hardest and best fighters in the land. A patrol of six hares can defend a whole village from a band of vermin twice their size because they have skill and training to do so."
Baatar eyes widen, "Do..do ya think I will do good as a patroller one day sur? I only know a little on using my dirk, and I can run fairly well, I want to be a fighter, a great one, one day and I try very hard in my training....well best I can"
Ciocan stands up, looming above both hares and smiles, "You will do very well recruit Baatar, you will train hard and rise fast and one day soon I'll be naming you as a private. But for now I think I am going to take a walk down to the sea shore and watch the waves." He nods to the hares and starts for the door.
Adrian smiles at the recruit's eagerness. "Aye, I remember bein' an eager young recruit, wot."
Baatar nods as he stands up "I will do my best sur!"
Adrian salutes. "Have a good evenin', sah!"
