Snowy Afternoon
Characters: Clover, Elecampane
Location: Redwall Abbey
Clover walks along the snowy ground toward the Abbey pond. It has been iced over a a while but with Spring approaching the ice is starting to melt and form large chunks on the surface. The mute rabbit whistles a old tune. It a beasts were to listen close they may reconized it as one of the songs about Martin the Warrior. The rabbit looks around the snowy ground at the muddy paw tracks and the mounds of snow the dibbuns have piled up to use a forts when they have their snow ball fights.
Elecampane is tucked behind one of the snow piles. She had stayed behind when the other dibbuns had gone in for lunch. The little squirrel peeks out around her snowy wall when she hears some beast coming out to the grounds. The tiny maid rolls a mushy ball of snow in her paws and hurls it as hard as she can at the rabbit.
The snow ball lands with a wet thump a fair distance from Clover. The rabbit whistles as if to call out to the beast which threw the snow. He scans the area and gathers up some snow as he walks toward the fort nearest to the thrown snowball. Feb 10, 2015 at 2:05 p.m.
Elecampane throws another snow ball then ducks down behind the snow fort. "Can no catchers me!" she giggles.
Clover smiles and chucks the snow ball at the pile of snow the squirrel's voice came from.
Elecampane yelps as snow rains down on her from the smashed snow ball. "Youa missed me. I bees winning!" she shouts back at Clover as she throws another snow ball at him.
The snow ball hits the rabbit between the eyes. He rubs his face and spits out bits of slush. Very quietly the rabbit sneaks around the snow fort to try and catch the squirrelbabe by suprise.
It's quiet, too quiet. Ele peeks out over the top of the pile of snow to see what has become of the rabbit. She doesn't see him anywhere. "Is you hurted?" she calls out wondering if her snowball had knocked him off his footpaws.
Clover sits with his back to Ele's snow fort just out of sight. His mostly white fur helps him blend in with the snow. His mouth is open in silent mirth as he laughs at the squirrel.
"Is you dead?" the little squirrel asks as she climbs up ontop of the snow fort to try and spot the rabbit. "Did you go inside th h'bbey?" she wonders aloud and looks for tracks from her perch.
Clover jumps up and tries to pluck the little squirrel from atop of the pile of snow. He leans a bit too far and slides down the other side.
Elecampane eeps when she is snatched and laughs as they slide down the snow pile. "Weee, again!" she shouts. "Go again!"
The rabbit and squirrel roll around in the snow for a few minutes more. Then Clover gestures to Ele that they should go inside as their clothes are getting wet from the snow.
Elecampane shakes her head. "No no no. No wanta go! No want a baf!" she cries out. She climbs up on Clover's back and nudges him in the ribs with a footpaw. "Jumpy. Play a jumpy game. No go ina h'bbey. No geta baf!" she pleads with the older beast.
Clover sighs and decides to humor the squirrelbabe for a little longer. He makes a few small piles of snow and carries Ele on his shoulders while jumping over the snow mounds.
"Wee! Jumpy higher!" the squirrelbabe shouts as she pulls at Clover's ears.
Clover frowns at the ear pulling. The rabbit thinks up a plan and with the dibbun still on his back he heads off around the abbey. He'd noticed that there is another way inside around that way that leads to the dormatories and the infirmary.
"Oh, we ina race?" the little maid asks the rabbit. "I get off an race you," she says trying to climb down.
Clover hesitates at first but then lets the squirrel down off his back. He gestures to the corner of the abbey and that the end of the 'race' is inside.
Elecampane claps her paws and runs off ahead of the rabbit. "I gonna wins!" she calls back to him. "I fastest. You is a slowbeast," she shouts at him before disappearing around the corner of the Abbey.
Clover smiles and runs after the squirrel. He isn't sure which of them is faster nor does he really care, but he doesn't want her to get too far ahead and lose interest in the race.
Elecampane giggles and ducks inside the infirmary as the rabbit rounds the corner. "You no gonna finds me!" she laughs as she dives for a hiding place.
Clover saw the squirrel go inside and that was one of his main goals. The second is for the both of them to get dry clothes, but he may leave the squirrel to the care fo the order beasts as long as she doesn't run back outside. The rabbit slows down and walks into the infirmary. He looks around to see if the squirrel has been taken care of my the Redwallers and just to see who might be on duty at this hour.
Elecampane did not pick a very good hidding spot and was quickly found by one of the Abbey sisters. The mouse ushered the squirrelbabe down stairs to change into a clean dress and warm up by the fire. Elecampane's squeals of protest can be heard up and down the stairs as she is taken away.
Clover shakes his head at the dibbun's antics and gestures to one of the healer beasts, pulling at his wet habbit. The healer sends the young beast off to get fresh clothes and before long he's joined Elecampene by the fire in Great Hall to dry out from playing in the snow.
