Ship's Log: Of Fishing and Frogs

From Redwall MUCK Wiki

Star of the South: Main Deck(#224444RA)

You feel the deck pitching wildly beneath your feet as you stand on the main deck of the ship Star of the South. You see brass railings, barrels of weapons or supplies, and a small table with a lantern on it. This ship is more warlike than its official purpose as a merchantship, hence the several giant crossbow-like ballistae aimed out over the rails at the edge of the deck. Most parts of the ship can be accessed from here.

Salt climbs up onto the deck, looking for Gabriel

Gabriel walks up from the below decks muttering about shrimp

Salt looks over to him and smiles, hearing Gabriel muttering. "C'mere mate! Need ta get some shrimp?"

Gabriel grins "I DO need some shrimp"

Salt climbs into a small single-sailed boat with red trim at the edges of the sail, suspended by ropes over the railing, indicating for the shrew to get in. "C'mon, mate. Let's get some."

Gabriel jumps into the boat after Salt

Salt pulls on the ropes and begins lowering the boat towards the water, saying "Welcome aboard the Red Herring, mate, my personal craft."

Gabriel nods "She is a fine craft. Did you build her?"

Salt nods. "Me and nuncle Bloody built her ourselves one day with extra lumber."

    • The two of them sail out into the Western Sea, not too far from shore**

Shallows - Western Sea (G10)

Saltwater tinted in shades of green, blue, and grey swirl through the waterlogged sand where it meets the shore whirling over and pushing about beautifully colored stones and shells. The whitish sands of the seafloor shine through the thin depth of swirling water that conceals a slight undertow.

The little craft skims out across the waves, guided by Salt's skillful paw on her tiller. Salt waits for a moment, then furls the sail and retrieves a fishing net from a small trunk in the bow of the boat, and hands it to Gabriel. " 'Ere, mate."

Gabriel nods "thanks" he casts the net over the side

As the sun sinks in the west against the horizon, lighting the sky with flame, the large net, and several more like it, are soon full of live shrimp, ready to be cooked. Salt looks at his companion and grins. "Think that's enough, mate?..." He trails off as a loud RRREEBIT from the shore cuts him off. "What the...?"

Gabriel nods "it is enough." than he hears to yell "What in the name of slat water was that?"

Salt scans the shoreline. "Not these blasted slimebags again."

Gabriel asks "what slimebags?" at the shore with one

Salt points paw, retrieving a sling with the other paw. "Toads."

Gabriel shivers "I hate the slimy things." he draws his blade

Salt loads his sling. "Let's see if we can get back to Star of the..." He shakes his head and groans. Toad warriors are swimming between Red Herring and the Star, blocking off any retreat.

Gabriel grins "So we fight?"

Salt laughs. "Well, we ain't gonna sit around and ask the blighters to tea, now are we?" He hoists the sail and brings the ship around to face the Star, and the horde of toads ahead of it.

Gabriel shrugs "maybe they like tea, should we try it?"

Salt laughs. "We only got shrimp aboard, you think that'll make good tea?" A toad looms before them in the water, and the sea otter cracks down on the toad's head with his loaded sling. "Bug off, slimey."

Gabriel nods "good point" he stabs a toad that got too close

Salt blinks scum, but ye don't have to kill 'em..." He scrabbles through the chest in the bow of the ship and retrieves a club . "They're carved from driftwood, and passes it to Gabriel. " 'Ere, mate, try this."

Gabriel looks slightly sad "but its FUN killing them. but I will use the club" he hits a toad on the head

Salt shrugs. "Just didn't want ye to get toad guts all over the place." He laughs. "The club is better, any'ow. Makes a nice BONK noise."

Gabriel nods "I like the BONK sound, you?" he hits another toad 'BONK'

Salt laughs. "That's why I brought the club with me." KADONK! Star of the South is getting closer, but more trident-wielding toads are trying to leap aboard Red Herring.

BONKEDY-BONK-BONK

REBIT---BONK!

Gabriel kicks at toad and hits one on the head at the same time 'CRACK!' "I think I might have killed that one, eh?"

"Ar, who knows? And if ye did, it's their bad luck, eh?" Salt cracks up, smacking another toad with his loaded sling. WHOPWHOPWHOP *Thunk*

Gabriel chuckles as he hits another toad "I think their luck went bad when they thought they could mess with us"

Salt laughs. "Didn't know toads HAD luck, good or bad." He pummels another one, taking its trident and whacking it using the handle

Gabriel nods "true." he hits a toad and laughs grimly "do WE have luck?"

"Well, we caught the shrimp, we're beating the toads, we're still alive, so yeah, I'd say we have luck." WHOP! A toad trying to clamber over the railings is sent flying back onto the shore. "BACK TO YOUR HOLE, FROGGY!" Salt yells.

KADONK

Salt has disconnected.

Gabriel grins and starts to hit toads left and right laughing slightly

WHAPWHAPWHAMBAPTHUNK! Salt's going crazy with the sling, and Star of the South is just ahead.

Gabriel is now laughing in full "COME TO ME!!!!!!!" WHACK THONK CRACK!

Salt laughs. "Aye, me luvverly toadies, come get whacked!" WHUPTH!

Gabriel throws himself into a group of toads laughing crazily

Salt laughs and extends a paw to his companion to pull him out. "Whoa, there, me warrior mate! We don't have to imitate the toads, just fight them!"

Gabriel chuckles and grasps Salt paw "I will try to keep myself from leaping in, but you must admit its pretty fun"

Salt pulls his friend aboard. "Aye, but usually the swimming is left to otters like me! Ar, it's alright mate, just keep whacking 'em."

Gabriel nods and hits another toad "so do you think the captin will come at any time?"

Salt shrugs. "He's busy back aboard ship, we're going there ourselves." The Red Herring is directly to starboard of Star of the South, and salt calls up to a deckhand, "Oy! Drop a few lines, mate!"

Gabriel keeps whacking toads and he almost jumps in but thinks better of it

A thick ship’s rope drops down, followed by another, and Salt makes the ropes fast to the bow and stern of Red Herring, yelling up to the crew of Star of the South, "Alright, mate, haul 'er in." He uses this time to hit a few more toads with slingstones. WHOP WHAP THUD!

    • Once safely aboard Star of the South, the pair haul the shrimp down to the supply locker and go about their business.**
