Halyard Village: Indoor Market

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Halyard Tavern ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Luckily for the residents of this small fishing village, the fish market is

kept separate - over on the docks. The market here is... everything else!

The market is a wide open indoor space, the ceilings peaked, the beams that

support the structure naked. Stalls line three of the walls, with the usage

set at first come first served. To get the really good spaces, one must

arrive rather early in the morning. The lesser spaces, just small carts and

tables in the center, are left for the later risers. The front of the

building is completely open to the air, providing a wide entrance for folks

to arrive and depart.

Jedrick was out getting needed supplies, since one trip got messed up and he decided to bring someone along today “Now do stay close"

Xander nods "Of..course sir" He keeps his hood up and head lowered some as he walks, he glances a little at the stalls of things.

Jedrick watches him "And why the almost pause, you know I dislike that" He gets and pays for some apples" He makes sure he stays close “Your to speak up, unless of course you want extra work"

Xander shakes his head, this time speaking more clearly “No sir, I am sorry. I was just thinking we should get some of the spices maybe, or clams maybe?"

Jedrick snorts “Fine we shall see Xander. Your training has gone well maybe I can let you pick up someone one day, but not too soon" He has yet to fully trust him to return.

Xander smiles faintly, a little hopeful "Really sir? I know a place that has sweets, the bakery?" Hey he still likes sweets, who doesn't like sweets at any age.

Jedrick shakes his head, "Sweets? why would ya want sweets for. What we usually have is fine "

Xander frowns “I just thought it be....different sir, not really had sweets for a...couple seasons" Yeah since he been with the wildcat.

Jedrick snorts, glaring slightly "Ya thought?!" He shakes his head “Quiet, you get what I say ya get and that’s it, sweets are not something true warriors eat"

Xander backs up a little and almost upsets an apple cart, he mutters a sorry and stays where he is.

Jedrick steps forward and grabs for his tunic collar "You will not back away from me, do you hear me?" He sounds upset now, like mad upset.

Xander gasps and nods his head "Y..YES sir" He whimpers slightly as he still has some fear, and maybe fear is what has him mind the cat.

Jedrick glares "Now..get home and if I don't see ya home, trust me ya won't like the results!"

Xander nods quickly and straightens up "Right away sir" He then turns to head back to the house.

Halyard Village: Main Street

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Halyard Village ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

This is the main street of Halyard Village. However, for being the main

street, it’s not terribly impressive. Like most of the rest of the village,

the homes and buildings that line this street are sound, at best. The purpose

of the architecture is obviously efficiency, not elegance. The buildings are

short and squat, none any higher than two levels, and a good few windows are

covered in a fine grit; a combination of salt, sand, and dirt. The foremost

profession of the village becomes apparent with a simple glance around,

fishing nets and other such paraphernalia littering the area out front of

many of the buildings. So far as the living component of the street, a few

vendors are usually out and about, attempting to sell their products, among

them fish and other such foodstuffs, but without much success. It is, after

all, a small village.

Xander comes out of the open market, in a rather big hurry, or least not watching where he is going totally as he keeps his hood up and over his head. He hears the crowd but pays it no mind as he was told to head to where he has stayed the past, well almost a season and a half, before that a half season of being dragged around elsewhere, he is close to Adriain less the hare moves he will walk right into the back of him.

This...this boy is very bad at lying. Rue squints down at her companion, ears and nose twitching something furious. Trouble? Clouds? Birds?? She coughs into her fist and then begins to fish in her bag once more, retrieving her favorite kind of medicine: a flask. As she wrestles with the cork, she eyes the newly arrived hare. "Trouble." She barks a rusty, raunchy laugh. "How about /ya/, soldjah? Found any yaself? That's wot Halyard is for, according to ya Long Patrol types, innit?" The two bucks before her are perhaps a little young for the type of rabble-rousing she's referring to, but he's learned that if anything is capable of distracting these buttoned-up types, it's atrocious manners.

Adrian nods his head slowly. Truth be told, the explanation sounds rather forced and contrived in his mind, but... He'd rather not cause a scene, or embarrass Monty unduly. He's willing to try to get along with him, for now, so long as he remains stable... "Well, mate... Yah look a sorry sight indeed, an' those scratches o' yer's will need to be touched up, lest they get infected... I'm sure ye don't wanna mess wi' any Patrol 'ealahs, though... But I know a beast..." He looks at Rue again. "Hmm? Wot trouble I might get inta is my concern, really...Oof." He turns, looking down. "Wot on earth? Who are yah? Can't yah see where yer goin', mate? 'Ave you been drinkin', strangah?"

Xander and backs off, "S..Sorry" His voice may be a little familiar, but its deeper now and..whoa he is taller now than he was last he was seen. He does peer up at the hare and a small gasp is heard as he backs off and almost knocks over a cart, the owner grumbles and moves across the street as the cloaked badger stays where he is “I ...was just..got to get back to house"

Monty looks from Rue, to Adrian, then back again. "Well, er...on my very first patrol in the town, I...um...got into a bit of a scuffle. Ended up in the infirmary..." he gives a light shrug, then his gaze lowers, "Seems to be a recurring theme for me, I suppose." Rubbing the back of his head with a paw uneasily, Monty frowns, "It's turning out I'm not very good at this whole Patrol thing, it seems." As Adrian mentions the scratches on his face, Monty peers at him curiously, "Does it really look -that- bad?" he asks, softly, before looking back at Rue. As she swigs from her flask, Monty blinks. "Is that medicine too, ma'am?" There he goes with the ma'am again...just something that was ingrained in him. And will likely get him punched sooner rather than later. The hare takes a step back as Xander comes out of nowhere and runs into Adrian, and the buck stares at the figure curiously.

"Dinnae call me ma'am," Rue insists. The remark is a reflexive one it seems for after she says it she pauses, and reconsiders. "Although...par'aps...Agh. Nevahmind." She looks beyond Monty to the other two figures, and takes Xander's appearance as an opportunity to communicate with him while Adrian is distracted. She takes another hearty swig of whatever boot-polish-smelling swill is in the flask and flicks the back of his elbow with her free paw. She swallows, hisses out fumes and jerks her head down the road to the west. The buck's remark about her flask catches her by surprise, though, and she looks at him, bemused. "O' a sort," she says softly. Does this soldier hare really not know what liquor looks like?

Adrian narrows his eyes, peering at the hooded figure. "Oy, stop there. Wot's yah name, mate? Yah sound...familiah. Can't...quite... put mah fingah on it, though... Are yah related ta... Lord Ciocan, by any chance?" He glances back at the other buck again, "Mmmph, Monty, yah just wait a bit, an' I'll take yah to tha tavern, alright?"

Xander frowns "I..no sur. I.."He looks towards the indoor market and seems worried"I..I should do Mr. Adrian...I.."

Monty catches himself using the term 'ma'am' again, and he quickly apologizes to Rue. "Er, I'm sorry, I just...I'm just used to saying that, is all. I don't think you ever said your name, by the way...." He glances down at her flask again, and is close enough to catch a bit of the scent coming out of it. The buck makes a face, taking a step back, "Er, I see. Is it supposed to cure something? I hope?" Glancing over at Adrian, Monty gives a nod of his head at his works. "Okay...do you think there'll be something in there to help?" he asks, obliviously. "I've been finding that I've been needing a lot of it, lately, it seems..." the buck frowns, before glancing back at Xander and watching him quietly.

Adrian peers at Xander. "How'd ya know mah name? Wait... We 'ave met before, ain't we... Gah, still not ringin' a bell. Yah sure yah ain't related ta Lord Ciocan?" He spares a glance back toward Monty once more. "Help? I'm unsure, mate. But, A friendly, quiet chat, ovah a couple drinks, can't hurt, wot." For better or worse, Adrian finds Monty to be rather intriguing now.

Rue frowns when her implicit suggestion for Monty to duck out of here is ignored. Yes, oblivious is a fitting word, it seems. She sighs and takes yet a third drought of what might very optimistically be called moonshine, sipping instead of swigging this time. Well, at least they'll all be going to someplace more amenable. Because Rue is going, oh yes. She makes this fact plain by stepping forward and slinging a sinewy arm around Monty's shoulders, all the while watching Adrian. And you though /he/ was suspicious of /her./ "You can call me Rue, Buck-o. An' an ale might do ya nicely, wot."

Xander frowns, should he risk it, it’s not like the wildcat doesn’t call him by name" Xander.." He speaks quietly and lifts his head a little where the hood doesn’t hide as much, he has a scar on his snout and one above his eye.

Monty apparently was never a heavy drinker. Or a drinker at all, really. He'd never really touched the stuff before, and so is quite unfamiliar with the liquid in all of its interesting forms. "As long as they have water," he replies, innocently, "They have water, right?"... and one is unsure if he is joking or not. It's likely he's not. As Rue throws an arm around his shoulders, he cannot help but smile a bit...the company (and perhaps a bit of the medicine he had taken) had certainly mellowed out his previous nervousness, and in turn it helped to keep his mind calm and away from straying towards thinking of things that could possibly set him off again. "...okay, I'll go..." He chances a glance around again to make sure that there weren't any higher-ups out here searching for him; it's likely then that he'd have to return to the mountain.

Adrian takes a long look at Rue, suspiciously. "Yes, they serve watah, mate. Or cidah... In yah present condition, that's the strongest I'd suggest for ya right now." He is no fool. He doesn't intend to let Monty get drunk, just hopes to get him relaxed in a far less strict environment than one finds at the mountain. Looking over at Xander again, he hmms, thoughtfully. "Xandah, yah say... Yah know wot, I *did* know a Xandah, once... 'E was a little thing... From... Mossflowah, I believe it was... Oy, when was that? One... Two seasons ago?"

Xander frowns “Me..." He mutters and backs off a little, getting edgy as he looks over at the market again "I..I should go before....."

Cider, ale...what's the difference? Rue certainly sees none, compared to the types of drinks she prefers. But she says nothing for now; she further antagonizing this beast might backfire. Instead she simply watches the exchange between Adrian and Xander, her eye slowly going dull, and curls her arm protectively around Monty. It's strange that she'd be friendly with any beast at all, much less on their first meeting, but whatever awkwardness she feels is simply channeled into a fuel for her less-than savory demeanor, which is all for the other two stranger's sakes.

Adrian reaches out a paw. "Wait... don't go, Xandah. Not yet... Didn't yah have a mum... From, wot was it... Redwall, I think? You are tha same Xandah, ain't ya? Wot are ya doin' here in Halyahd?"

Monty smiles to Adrian, giving him a brief nod. "Oh, good. I think I'd try anything that could help me not have to worry about the, um...thing...happening again...." Once again he glances nervously towards the apothecary door, and really really hopes that the shopkeeper isn't hurt too badly. But hey, it was his fault for grabbing the hare, anyway...Monty never wanted to cause anyone harm, and never would, if he could help it anyway. The young buck glances up at Rue as she curls her arm around him, and he can't help but feel just a tad safer in her presence. Must be something about the whole 'two nutso peas in a crazy pod' thing that he is able to relate to. Let's just hope that her more, er, unsavory demeanor doesn't rub off too much on Monty. We'll see about that. He prepares to follow the two towards the tavern, glancing down at his now-torn and dirty uniform. Well, time for another one, apparently.

Xander backs away,"I..I can't..Jedrick would h...hurt you.....I" He sounds ready to cry and seems...afraid? He then he just runs off quickly, he wants to stay but a fear he has makes him run fast and around a corner into a crowd, then off to where ever he stays.

Adrian is left entirely nonplussed. "Jedrick? Who in tha bloody 'ell is Jedrick? Hurt me? I'd like ta see 'im try." Turning back to the others, he gestures toward the tavern. "At any rate... I'm sure yah would, Monty, t'is why I'm keen ta talk to yah, wot. I've 'eard...things, about ya, that I'm not so willin' ta believe, havin' now met yah in the flesh..."

Halyard Tavern: Main Room

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Halyard Tavern ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Warmly lit by torches along the walls and lanterns set upon the many tables

scattered around the room, the main room of the Halyard Tavern is an often-

populated area. One corner of the tavern is taken up by a stage, about a

foot or two higher than the rest of the floor, where live entertainment

performs, while circular tables, both large and small, are set up in front

of the stage, spreading out into the center of the room. Meanwhile, around

the perimeter of the tavern, booths are set, and, of course, the obligatory

bar rests against the far wall, a bartender or barmaid always on duty.

Jedrick walks into the tavern muttering, he goes to the main area and orders an ale" Ale please..strong one"

Adrian nods his head, agreeing. "Aye, I think that would be, Monty. Our career is kill or be killed, remembah. Killin' ta protect somebeast is acceptable. It is, in fact, expected, in certain situations. If a vermin is threatenin' an innocent beast... Yah kill the villain." He leans back. "Yah heart is in tha right place, Monty. Yah just... Have lapses, sometimes. It happens. More 'n' we all care ta admit." He spares a glance to the beast that just entered the tavern, not quite liking his look, but keeps to himself for now, focused on Monty again.

Monty nods his head in response as Adrian speaks. "Yes, I've come to realize that part of this job quite clearly as of late. It's hard to describe that feeling when you are forced to take someone's life, whether they are evil or not. For some, it just seems so easy, and I'm not quite sure I will ever understand it. Even when I had to do it, despite our lives being at risk at the time, it still just feels...I dunno....wrong, I guess..." he shrugs his shoulders, as he stares down at his tea. "I mean, don't get me wrong, if any of the Patrol was threatened I would do what I had to.. to protect them, and citizens of the city, but...I don't know if I'll ever get to the point where I enjoy it, like some seem to...." He lifts his eyes as Jedrick enters the room...the hare watches him for a moment, before he turns his attention back to speaking with Adrian.

Jedrick sits by a weasel as he drinks the ale, "Been a long day and my..pet needs to better listen" The weasel points his head to the hares and the wildcat looks over and shrugs "I don't fear the Long Patrol fools." A long drink of ale "Sides..here in a couple seasons my pet's training will be even better, then who am I to fear then, his training is going by very well so far, he obeys me"

"I...never enjoy it, mate. I've... Only been forced ta kill a few times... An' I..." He fixes the other buck with a stare. "I'll be completely truthful, Monty, I do not like mahself, the self I became the very first time I killed a beast. I lost control, Monty, as we fought. I let mah angah at mah foe cloud me. When tha time came, an' he was defeated, I was in a white-hot rage, an' I wanted 'im ta suffah. I am sorry ta say that in that moment, I...*enjoyed* killin' 'im." He closes his eyes now, and goes quiet. "Control...is the utmost importance, Monty. Utmost." He sighs. "Naturally, I was horrified, once I'd regained mah composure, an' then I felt physically ill..." His voice trails off into silence, and it's during the lull in the conversation with Monty that his large ears catch snippets of that chat the weasel and Jedrick are having... And what he hears, he doesn't particularly like... So he listens a bit more.

Monty gives a nod of understanding after Adrian finishes speaking, "I can relate to those feelings more than you know, Adrian..." he replies, his voice quiet and trembling a bit. "That first time, on my first patrol, when I was attacked in this town by thieves trying to steal my uniform...I'm quite sure I beat one of the thieves to death, with my fists...." His gaze turns downwards again..." And those few moments in the swamp that I can remember, when I was taking out those frogs...I...I almost did enjoy it at the time, then afterwards...I had that feeling where I almost never wanted to pick up a weapon again. It's a really strange juxtaposition of emotions all in one place, at one time." He shakes his head slowly. "But it is as you said, it's for the greater good sometimes, and sometimes we have to sacrifice our own emotions, I suppose..." He too catches snippers of Jedrick's conversation, and he exchanges a quiet, concerned look with his Patrolmate.

Jedrick speaks more as he and the weasel talk, the weasel speaks "Where ya get it?"..." My brother sold him to me, I offered gold and a very lethal poison to take out some leader in Mossflower, then the fool goes ad gets himself killed by his 2nd in command or so I heard" The weasel laughs at this "Didn’t get along huh" The wildcat smirks "No, I hated my brother...no matter though." He finishes his ale and smirks" I have a soon to be strong..powerful helper." The weasel chuckles "And it obeys you?" Jedrick nods "Yes it does, it knows the punishment when he doesn’t"

Adrian nods at his friend again. Hey, they've been talking long enough, clearly developing a fine rapport... Surely they're friends by now. "It is a tightrope, one must walk. I was told later that I'd probably come *very* close to berserking, at the time. My fellow Patrollahs said I wasn't mahself." He crosses his arms, then. "I can give ya some advice ta help with maintainin' composure... I reckon they can probably help ya, too..." His voice never wavers, at all, his tone remaining calm and collected, as if oblivious, but his eyes... He glances at Monty, then makes a very slight tip of his head in the direction of Jedrick's table. He mouths, silently, toward the other hare, "Are you armed?"

Monty smiles, then extends a paw over the table towards Adrian, "Seems fair enough, sah...it's a deal. And frankly at this point, I think I will take any advice I am given, it surely couldn't hurt." It seems that within the span of one day, he'd seemingly made two new friends...which was likely two more than he'd ever had before. Not a bad day, really, aside from the apothecary incident and sneaking out of the mountain, of course. Oh, and passing out in the middle of the tavern. But otherwise...good day. He sees what Adrian mouths to him, and he carefully shakes his head, mouthing back, "No...couldn't trust myself with a weapon," he almost whispers. "This is all I've got," he subtly nods down towards his paws. "You?"

Jedrick doesn't see what is secretly spoken but his ears catch some words as he looks over quietly and back to the weasel, "Anyways. Few mess with me either"

Adrian grasps Monty's paw, and shakes. "I'll also say, about Rue, from earliah... I might 'ave acted a bit cool, towards her... But I know, in 'er own strange way, she has yah best interest in mind... She's kind of a legend around Halyahd, ex-Patrollah, most folks avoid her like tha plague." He subtly gestures to his left side. "Rapier," he whispers quietly. "Ya fists will do fine." He ventures a glance toward Jedrick. "Let's try not ta make a scene, if at all possible..." He grimaces. "I'm not keen on havin' ta use mah blade."

Monty grins a bit, and chuckles softly. "No worries, really. I think it's safe to say that I owe her a lot in the short time since we met. She practically saved me from going to prison earlier today, and I suppose I'll just leave it at that. I don't want to say this around her, because I'm not sure if she'll be offended, but...in a way she reminds me of my mum. I mean, not that she's old or anything, but...just how she seemingly has been looking out for me and such when she hardly even knows me. It's odd...just please don't tell her I said anything..." The hare gives a shrug. "And if they want to avoid her, it's their loss, I guess." At the whisper, he nods his head carefully, before glancing down at his paws...then back up towards Adrian. "You have a plan?" he mouths.

Jedrick looks over at the hares as the weasel starts to stand, he yawns a little as he also slowly stands not yet going any one direction. He has a blade, the weasel has a couple daggers on him.

Adrian looks toward Jedrick again, then nods at Monty. "Aye, I do... An' it's... Insane." He sighs. He really needs to work on how he formulates plans, especially on the fly. Seeing them stand, though, he frowns. Seems they're about to vacate the premises... Only one option left, then. "Come on, this is completely insane, but, I see no other option. We're gonna saunter on ovah there an' get all introduced. No weapons, yet..." And then he stands.

As Adrian stands, so does Monty. He merely grins grimly at the other buck's choice of words. "And so am I, apparently, so it just may work..." he quips, winking to his friend before waiting to follow him over towards the suspicious party. "And, if I can recall earlier situations, I may not need weapons, to be honest. We'll just see how this goes, maybe they'll cooperate?" Ah, young and naive. He follows Adrian over towards where Jedrick and the weasel are sitting, "Excuse me, sirs...Long Patrol. Would you be privy to answering a couple of questions this evening?" he asks, as politely as possible. Hey, he can at least say he tried being nice.

Jedrick narrows his eyes at Monty, the weasel on the other paw is a bit stab happy as he walks closer to the young hare, "Well you asked one, may I ask one?" He smirks “Where do I send the dead body!" He lunges at the hare as the wildcat watches and mutters "Idoit..."

Adrian rests his paw on the hilt of his rapier, nodding approval as Monty asks the question. He's growing to like this buck more and more. Could make a fine partner, yet... despite his troubles. "Yes, fine sah's. We're tha happiness patrol, just wantin' ta make sure yah both are happy, wot?" His sarcasm comes to a very swift end, though, when the weasel moves to attack Monty, and quicker than any beast can blink, he's drawn one of his hidden daggers, that he'd neglected to mention to the other buck. He dashes forward, to cover the other hare. "They nevah learn, Monty, nevah." Most unfortunately, though, the runner has left himself wide open for an attack from the side, so intent is he on taking out the weasel.

Monty sighs heavily as his words aren't heeded, and he pretty much figured that they would be likely attacked at some point. "Seriously? After the day I've had?" The weasel is fast, but Monty seemingly is that much faster, and he fires off a series of quick jabs and hooks aimed at the weasel's head and jaw area, at the same time sidestepping the stab...this, coupled with Adrian's attack aimed at the weasel, likely didn't mean good things for said weasel. However, Monty is too occupied to notice the opening that Adrian had left for attack.

Jedrick takes the opening and quickly goes forwards to elbow Adrian right in the face fast and hard, and leaves the weasel alone to fight as he rushes out the door, wow he didn't even draw a blade, yes he had one but didn't draw it. The weasel gets a tooth knocked out and goes to stab the hare and trips over a chair falling backwards with a groan.

Adrian is taken completely off guard... Not his finest moment. Taking an elbow square in the face, the hare is immediately stunned, and seeing stars. "OOF!" is all he says, as he drops to the floor in a heap, his vision starting to cloud.

Monty is too occupied with the weasel to bother attempting to chase after Jedrick, and so he ends up able to run out the door to freedom. Hey, it's what happens when you have two relatively young LPers attempting to take care of business. As the weasel trips over the chair, it gives Monty the opening he needs, and he quickly pounces on the weasel. Attempting to pin him to the floor, the young hare begins to swing his fists down at the unfortunate weasel, punching down as hard as he can at his head and face area. The more punches that connect, the angrier Monty gets, and soon, he is growling, his eyes flashing with his uncontrolled anger as he punches and punches. And punches.

The weasel manages to roll out of the way once and rises a knife to stab the other hare "Bye bye bunn---" He is then knocks over and the knife sides across the floor as he is knocked to the floor beside Adrian and is punched in the face, one gets him in the throat and that’s the one that ends the weasels life...And the wildcat Jedrick, ...well he is long gone.

Adrian is barely conscious, during this whole scene. Perhaps his decision to face off with Jedrick and his cohort had been dangerously foolish. (Alright, not perhaps... It *was* dangerously foolish, but Adrian is not likely to ever admit that...) He lies there, kind of in and out of it, unable to even try to attempt to calm Monty.

Meanwhile the weasel is...well dead!

    • Well not much else, Jedrick escaped as seen but he also gave Adrian an injured jaw before the wildcat escaped, the weasel was killed by Monty and well the two hares went back to the mountain, but as they did Jedrick watched from the shadows, he would remember the two hares in case he needs to kill them later and then Jedrick went back home to check on Xander who was…the badger was there luckily, that is lucky for the badger.**
