Designing a Sheild
Characters: William and Fira

Mossflower - Dirt Road
Orph sits by the side of the road reading a thick yellow paged book he'd borrowed from Brother Jullian earlier in the day. His large low set ears are ever moving to alert him to any passersby as he sits there seemingly lost in the pages of the book.
Fira is on the move again only much closer to home so she's still in the woods to the west of the road. She plods on about, no care for being quiet since well, how would she tell? Pushing bushes aside with her spear and generally on the hunt for food again. Full time job that. Though she's given the road a glance through the trees they've also succeeded in hiding the one thing on it, namely Will and she sadly gets to be oblivious to him there again.
Orph's ears alert him to the otter presence without much effort due to all the noise she'd making or sounds like she's making. He raises his head some and waits to see if the newcomer will mistake him for a mouse as some do or not. If not well he's arm should they have a problem with it and if not all the better since this beast sounds larger than himself or at least very noisy
Fira as perhaps is more normal for her is indulging herself in a little silent muttering. That is to say her lips are moving but she's not bothering to make anything come out. Another quick rustle about though and there is something which sounds like a sigh followed by the sounds of movement changing course to head directly for the road, just about stumbling into the young rat. She comes to a quick stop, surprised again though quick to recover "Heh, you again"
Orph had heard her coming, put the book in his pack and quickly stood. He didn't look very pleased at first with dagger out should whoever had tried to come up behind him be less than kind to wandering dibbuns. Recognizing the otter his face softened and he sheathed his dagger. "You should be more careful. Not nice t sneak up on a beast even if ya didn't mean to." He remains standing watching her.
Fira pulls out her wry smirk again "There's a difference between walking through a wood and sneaking up on a beast. I don't sneak, ever. If you happen to be in the direction I'm walking in then that's not really my fault...Thought you went home anyway or do you just like hanging about the road?"
William says, "I was goin t but I stopped at th Abbey instead an Jullian gave me this book an said I could look at it all I want ... an I'm not done looking at it yet."
Fira leans against her spear and peers down, briefly looking for the book in question before all eyes are back to the dibbun again "What's it about then?"
Fira kneels down briefly before just going to sit on the ground, cross legged, lay her spear across her lap as she goes to take the book and give it a little flip through "Heh, who knew there were so many"
William says, "Yeah I know. I'm gonna paint my buckler one of these days real soon and I'm readin this to figure out what sort of stuff t put on it."
Fira keeps an eye on him out the corner of her eye so she can flick her gaze back to him soon as he starts speaking again, looking to the buckler a moment later "Hm, kinda nice idea. Got any idea what you want on it?
Orph nods, "That," points to the Saltire, "that," crescent, "that," wavy line, "that one, "square block line, "an those two colors to start with" blue and red. He looks over the symobls carefully, "There's gonna be black on it course an maybe some other stuff for th Abbey cause I'm there a lot an somethin for th middle ... that mouse ... well think he's a mouse, he wears a hooded robe so you can't really tell if he is or not but I think he is .. anyway he drew a picture for me when we looked through this at th Abbey," he digs in his pouch, "here it is." he holds up a sheet of paper with an eagle drawn on it. It looks like the ones in the book, it may have been copied from there. "That'll go in th middle an I'm not sure what color it'll be yet, but I'll think of somethin." He nods to himself pleased with this as he looks over the drawings in the book again
Fira nods slowly, giving her drawing another quick look "Black, red, blue, green. Got it" she glances back to look at the buckler "Hm. Depends how good you are and what you've got to paint it on with
Orph chews his lip thinking, "I don't know. Haven't really seen much paint around ... could ask at a smithy or some place wot sells shields an stuff an ask."
Fira tilts her head faintly "Hmm, well there's a place just north of here, sells weapons. They could probably do it. No clue how much would cost you though."
Orph nods and digs out a piece of paper to copy the scratching onto, so they can show it to the shopkeeper. "Might be a lot ... but we can still ask anyway, right?"
Fira finally gets back up again, offering just another shrug "Hey, it's not my money you'll be spending"
"I have money. Not like I'd ask you t pay part anyway," the rat huffs at the otter's remark before becoming very quiet as another beast passes them by heading north.
Fira glances to the other beast but hard to split attention too much when have to be looking at a beast to know if they're talking soooo, she soon looks back to the rat with a small smirk "Good. I'm saving mine"
The young rat is starting to get annoyed with this otter, but he keeps it to himself for now. He wouldn't want to make the otter-maid angry with him. He know too well what an angry otter can do to a rat dibbun, so with a slight wave he heads off down the road to the shop.
