Salamandastron: Recreation Room
- -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Salamandastron *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
The recreation room for the army of the Longpatrol. Here soldiers come to
relax after a hard day's work and the officers come for a game of cards or
a quick drink by the fire. The room is quite large, having to deal with a
lot of hares at one time. Along one wall there is a large worktop with
some cuhsioned stools lining one side of it. On the other side of the
worktop there stand many kegs and bottles, lined so that they can be
easily opened by someone standing on the inside of the bar but well out of
reach of the rowdy hares on the other side. There are a few woollen cloths
on the bar and mats in front of each stool. The next thing nearest to the
bar are the round tables, each with 4 chairs around and a lantern in the
middle of each one. There are a couple of slightly larger oval tables with
8 seats around, obviously for larger crowds. The other end of the room is
littered with armchairs, comfortable armchairs, each pair with a small
table in between. The armchairs are near the fire, used to heat the room
and provide extra comfort for the relaxing soldiers.

Tyree is in the rec room. It must have been a weird day for him, since he almost never comes up here of his own accord. Or, maybe it's been a very good day. It all depends on how you look at him. The way he's seated near the fire, huddled over something, he can either be introspective or heavily depressed. He's got something in his paws, turning it over and around. It seems to be of medium size, wooden. A carving he's just finished and is checking for errors, perhaps. But he stares at it to the exclusion of the rest of the room. Not even the open training book on the arm rest catches his eyes.

Weird is a definite improvement over a 'normal' day for Tyree, IMO. Well Rah enters now, as is entirely predictable.. as also is predictable, he scans the room for anyone he knows. Which is most of the beasts in the bar, but Tyree's intent expression is most interesting! So Rah makes his way over, his eyes resolving the image of the carving as he gets closer. "Hey, Ty, new project?"
"Ahh! Er, uh," Tyree nearly drops his precious wood-thing and fumbles it, trying to keep it from the major's prying gaze. He all but sits on it by the time Rahier actually gets to him, keeping it hidden under his thigh. "Major, sah! Uh..." He knows he should stand up to salute, but he does have the obviously-hidden wood carving poking into his leg. He sighs in defeat and shows it off as he stands up respectfully. Ten-hut! "Yes... sah." The carving itself is actually a fine looking swan. "Haven't... painted it yet, though. It looks silly, I know."
Ah! Well Ty needn't hide it; he knows Rah's appreciation for such things, he himself being quite fond of the hobby. The major peeks on in at it as he arrives and Ty stands, peeking thoughtfully at the swan. "Quite good," he says, breaking into a little grin. "Very realistic. Mind if I join you?" The major turns and takes the chair next to Ty's, sitting down.
"Thank you sah. Of course not, sah," Tyree says, dropping back down again. He sets the swan into his lap. The swan is definitely a crowning achievement of his, but he doesnt' seem to see it that way. "Just, ah... branchin' out. I'm gettin'... better at it. Heh, maybe I should even start sellin' 'em or... or somethin'. Wot."
Perhaps it's the cold weather but the fireside has been rather popular lately. Rahier and Tyree are not the only two taking up residence in the more quiet corner of the room, though at this point Cameron is wondering if his choice of location was such a good spot. It's hard to figure how his back is not cramping up on him yet. He's seated in one of the armchairs but has leaned across fully to prop his elbows on the table closest to it, nose in a large book of anatomy and expression thoughtful. He'd be hard to overlook, lost in his studies.
Meanwhile, Zoe has decided to step out for a bit of a drink! Life can't all be about paperwork, eh wot? The officer limps over to the bar, where she leans to order, and then heads over to... the fireplace! Imagine that. She sinks down into an armchair with a relaxed sigh, then glances about with a nod. Greetings, all! Etc.
Tyree has arrived.
Rahier tilts his head in casual inspection of the swan over in Ty's lap, his grin still there. "Branchin' out's how y'improve, y'know? Otherwise y'get stuck doin' whatcha know. An' that might not be such a bad idea.. lil' market f'arts in th'village." Rah declines as of yet to order a drink, instead basking in the glow of the fire rather than the glow of alcohol. It's nice after being in the general chill of the mountain. His eyes turn up to avoid them slipping closed, and they travel over to Cameron, who looks intent on his book. "Hey," he greets, recognizing Dark's kiddo. "Doin' some readin'?" Of course it's obvious, but there's the whole conversation-starting thing. Now Zoe can't just get away with a nod either, no she can't. "Hey, Colonel," greets the major, touching his brow to her in the odd salute. "Come on over."
Oh noes, now everyone is starting to gravitate in here! Don't invite them all over! He remains seated, until the Colonel is coming by, prompting him to stand (yet again) and salute, unfortunately conking himself in the head with his newest creation due to his enthusiasm. "Colo-awrp!" He yelps and leans forward, clutching his forehead. "Ma'am. Good ta' see you."
"... Ouch," Zoe comments with raised brow. Her head tilts a little to the side, looking a little, uh. Concerned for him. "... Hullo, lad. You all righ', there?" She glances past the younger buck to Rahier. You know. The /old/ buck, in the group. Don't worry, though, he'll always be a lad to Zoe! "Evenin', Rah."
"M'fine, ma'am," Tyree says, rubbing his head and placing the swan back on the chair. "Just a little, ah, overexcited. Not often I craft somethin' like this, better... take better care of it I suppose. Put it away. Somewhere."
Zoe_Lang's eye catches on the carving in question. Hum. She extends a paw, leaning forward in her seat a sec. "Mind if I take a look-see?" A look-see.
Rahier grins as the Colonel moves on in (ha!) and shifts his eyes to Ty. "I'd like t'see it again when y'paint it," he says. "Changes th'whole mood of a carvin', really, movin' from bare wood t'a painted piece."
Tyree is not going to be one to keep his own Colonel from looking at his creations. "Of course." He picks it up and hands it over. It's in a static position, neck curved and wings at the sides, but it's very well detailed, and the neck's S is quite elegant. "Took a lotta... picture watchin', ta' get it right," he murmurs almost bashfully. "Never seen a swan in real life, before. Heard that's for the best."
Zoe_Lang snorts her agreement at this. "Not a bird t'mess with, no doubt," the Colonel mutters distractedly, as she turns the elegantly-carved swan this way and that. She glances up at the buck, then. "You're quite good, eh?"
"He is good," confirms Rah, now settled comfortably into his chair. He has a certain smile he's wearing now, one of approval for the way Ty's shaped up. "Needn't waste that talent on gettin' eaten by an angry swan."
"Oh, well, I... I get by," Tyree says with a few carefully measured nods. "I was, uh, hopin' ta' give that ta' somebeast, you know. I figure they're just takin' up space in my... spaces." He clears his throat, wondering if he was fidgeting enough. Not often the leader of the Long Patrol gets a close look at his own personal creative talent.
Zoe_Lang gives the carving another look over before she extends it back to Tyree with a thoughtful nod. "Aye, it's quite good, quite good indeed." She glances to Rahier, catching the look of approval. Aw, does Rah have a protg? She gives him a bit of a grin. "You ought t'take commissions about the mountain. I know I wouldn't mind petitionin' you for a carvin' of somethin' or othah."
"Oh, r-really?" Tyree says, perhaps the first stammer he's had in... ever, really. His eyes widen just slightly, and he takes a deep breath before straghtening his voice and his back. "I would be happy ta' be of service, ma'am. I mostly do waterfowl as you can see, but. Branchin' out. Like I said. May even start doin'... other hares. Some. Time or another."
Ahh, it's funny to see someone can still straighten up for Zoe. Ahem, ahem. Rah watches the two, then quirks a grin of his own. "Commissions is dangerous; suddenly it's not jus' y'self y'have t'be satisfied with."
"Well, let me think on it a bit, 'n' mayhaps I'll come up with somethin' new for you t'play around wi-" Zoe pauses, and glances at Rah. "Ah, now. You know me, I'm an old softie. Hardly critical a'tall, m'good Majah." Griiin.
"Uh, it's not?" Tyree says, staring at Rahier with suddenly rather wide and fearful eyes. What if the Colonel /doesn't/ like what he carves? Or worse, whoever else he was planning on giving it to? Suddenly this whole branching out thing doesn't seem like such a good idea. He clears his throat. "I promise, ma'am, I will do... /nothin'/ that will be of sub-par quality."
Rahier laughs a little now. "Only if you're worried 'bout repeat business!" That is, people being satisfied, and all. The major has to lean in to Ty to whisper, "Only do it equivalent t'what she pays ya."
Zoe_Lang smirks at Rah, narrowing that one eye. Tsk. "You're not too old I can't still throw you into kitchen duty, ya know." It's an oldie but a goodie! Ahem. She returns her attention to Tyree with an amused glance. "... Relax, mate. From one craftah t'anothah, 'tis a process 'n' I know it. Nothin's evah perfect."
"Well. I can come close," Tyree insists on assuring the good Colonel. He retains his straight posture, picture perfect hare at attention. He listens to Rahier's advice with a slightly bemused expression. "That would all depend on how much one valued their payment," he replies calmly. Of course, Tyree would try to do an exceptional job whatever the reward. He was just that way.
/Of course/ Ty is that way, and Rah knows it. He just sometimes likes to pretend Ty is normal for the amusement it provides him. "They won't take me on kitchen duty anymore," he replies, with a cheeky little grin. "They beat m'bottom with ladles."
Zoe_Lang has to fight rather hard not to laugh at Rahier's retort. Ahem. Hem! Serious face, /serious face/. "Sometimes I'm convinced yer agin' in reverse, ya know tha'?" she jokes. Tsk. Tsk tsk tsk. She thumbs a paw at Rahier, looking to Tyree. "I do hope this'un doesn't rub off on ya, lad. He's trouble." TSK!
"I happen ta' be an inordinately good influence," Tyree says with a tiny waggle of his head. "Perhaps in time I'll be the one ta' straighten 'im out." He glances at Rahier, a little glimmer in his eyes the only sign at all that he's going along with the jokes.
"Physical punishment hasn't done it yet," mentions the major, again leaning back into his chair. Still cheeky, maybe. "So I don't think y'can, Ty. 'M a lost cause."
For Zoe's part, she's quite enjoying the banter. Even though... she apparently never received her drink! Tsk, player error my butt. Bad service! "I'm afraid t'say he pretty much is, Ty m'lad. Best t'just accept it 'n' move on. I have." The doe grins and starts to rise, then, slowly and with a grunt of discomfort. These old bones and all that. "I ought t'be retirin' t'bed," she notes, with a nod to them both.
Tyree steps aside for Zoe's sake, holding out a polite paw if she needs it. She's old, after all! "Ma'am, good ta' see you again," he says, every word and every movement measured and planned ahead. "Don't worry, I'll keep the major in line..."
Well hasn't this been lovely. Cameron had glanced up from his work only once before now and that was when Rahier spoke to him - only to be cut off when the colonel arrived and the carved swan discussion began. The blonde would rather not interrupt so he's been quiet and to himself.. that is until he finally goes to sit up and flinches at the pang through his back. "Ah!grr.." The buck closes one eye and gingerly sits up, stretching his back with a pop. No more bad posture.. ever.
The buck's offered paw is respectfully declined by the Colonel, though she gives him a grin for the offer. She straightens, /her/ posture pretty dern good for an old gel. And with a nod and a lazy sort of salute to the lot, she turns and limps for the door. Off to bed with her!
Ah, well, Zoe needs her old-person sleep. Rah gives her a casual wave when she departs, but his attention is quickly captured by the back-cracking gunshot from over in Cameron's direction. "Musta been a good book," he says, with a little grin.
Tyree's ear twitches at the popping sound, and turns towards Cameron with a scrutinizing expression. "That's why I never sit except like this," he says, glancing behind himself at his ramrod straight back. "You /did/ seem rather engrossed."
"I've been studying." Cameron offers on a light gasp, due to the manner in which he is arching his spine right now to ease the pain. Slowly he slips back into a settled position, hands flexing on the arms of his chair. "Exams.. and all." He flutters his ears in an expression of embarrassment while he hesitates a grin in their direction.
Rahier recognizes the great old volume, but still, he wants to make conversation with the hesitant little leveret. "Whatcha studyin'?" Every potential healer a friend, of course.
Tyree heads over to be next to the others. Swan carefully and securely placed on a chair. "Anatomy," he explains for Rahier, once he sees the book. Not really taking the hint that the question was just meant for Cameron. "Useful, even for a fighter like me. Gotta know where all right... squishy bits are. If you'll pardon my vernacular."
Sephora is the late joiner to this little group. She enters with her hands rubbing at her face, muzzle spread wide in a yawn that tapers off while she heads to the bar. Booze, boooooze. "Gimme a cold water'n lemon." Okay, maybe not booze this time. She leans her arms into the counter, and yawns again, her hair in her face and expression groggy.
Cameron's ears lift free of unruly hair as he takes Rahier in with more intrigue than before. Perhaps it's because the older healer is actually showing interest in what he's doing. ".. a-" Oh. Okay. Tyree gets to the response first and the recruit glances up to him with something of a nervous smirk. "Yeah. Well.. definitely required information for patching those.. bits back together, too?" Eh? Eh..
"Squishy bits? Why, I never knew y'could communicate it so eloquently." Rah's grin for Ty is friendly, and of course that extends to Cameron as well. "Anatomy I always found fascinatin', do you? How all th'little bits an' piece of us fit t'gether."
"An' how easily they come apart." Well, Tyree's just a bundle of happiness and good feelings tonight, isn't he? He waggles his ears, just so.
Those 'good feelings' aren't exactly.. making Cameron go to a happy place. Actually his response is once again the near opposite of what Tyree is offering to the conversation. "Yeah." He wets his bottom lip with his tongue as he glances away from the fighter to the major. "I think it's the most interesting so far. How.. easily the body might break, but its amazing ability to mend itself." He trails off for a moment, glancing to his book and notes. "How everything works as a whole." Thoughtful.
Sephora glances around, and spots the little trio. None of them looking bar-wards, apparently. Leaving the 'tender to sort out her drink, such as it is, the doe comes up toward them, leans over, and covers Rah's eyes with her hands. No talking! The voice always gives it away. XD Meanwhile she flashes a grin over at Tyree and Cameron.
"Occasional amazin' ability t'mend itself," Rah says, with a little grin. "Can't be too amazin' or else we'd be out of a job. Let us plug th'leaks an'-" Hff. Suddenly, the room is obscured by a pair of paws, and the major snuffles. "This'd be one of a very limited set o' people."
"Much like ourselves. Valuable lessons ta' be learned. Good you're reachin' such conclusions," Tyree murmurs reflectively, and turns back to see Rahier's eyes covered by... oh. "Three guesses, sah," he says simply.
Sephora's grin curls a little wider across her muzzle. If anyone was going to rat her out, it'd be Tyree - and he didn't! Points for him. Sheee doesn't say anything yet.
"Oh.. with help of course!" Cameron states then murmurs with a shrug. "It's just a given." His self-conscious grin doesn't fade as Sephora moves into view, but instead changes direction and intensity, showing more of a genuine affection as his ears tilt to the sides. A glance is sent back up to Tyree but he is quiet now, letting his expression even out.
Rahier's nose twitches. Doth he detect the remnants of boxing-tape upon these paws? The thought makes his muzzle crinkle into a smile. "Y'aren't gonna make me guess, are ya?" His eyes turn a little upward underneath those paws, like he can see through them at her. "Lin wasn't boxin' t'day an' I s'pect no one else would cover m'eyes. Seph'." Haw.
Sephora turns her grin briefly over to Cam, and waggles one ear at him in a little wave. Hi, it says, I know you! Then Rah's powers of deduction bring a snicker out of her, and she removes her hands, eyeing the palm of one of them and giving it a sniff while the other arm curls around Rah's neck loosely from her position. ".. what, are m' hands sweaty smellin' or somethin'?"
Tyree isn't about to ruin anyone's fun. He just never really has any. He watches Rahier try to work out his mystery guest with... very little that belies amusement, actually. "Stellar deductive work, sah," he mutters, looking down at Cameron with a wry smirk. Oh the silly games the sweethearts play, amIright?
It's almost inspiring actually. At first Tyree's glance gets a more hesitant one from Cameron, though, until he notices the smirk. His own is offered a split second after, twitching with humor at the corner of his lips. Slowly he goes to push himself out of the chair with another pop to his spine before actually bending to collect the book and his notes - the latter being shoved into the opened page of the former. ".. I have to be up early." This weak explanation is offered to anyone intrigued by the farewell while he takes the time to shove the tome into his bag, glancing to each of them. "Good night?"
"I won't say nothin' 'bout th'smell of your paws," Rah says, by way of reply. Ah, the cheek, it still remains. But he holds one of her paws loosely by the wrist, as they curl in around his neck, and he grins to Ty. "Thank y'kindly. Seph, have y'seen Ty's carvin' b'fore? Look at th'swan." He turns his nose toward it to indicate it, about the time that Cameron decides to stand on up. "Well if y'gotta be up early, y'should head on t'bed. No use stayin' up late." Grin. "Nigh'."
Sephora is distracted by Cam getting up, leaning sideways to catch the young buck as he goes past with her free hand. Long enough to give him a smooch on the cheek - smack! XD The doe chuffs at him. "You'n me, still studyin' after lunch, righ'?" she confirms, letting him go. She arranges herself to sit on the arm of Rah's chair, now peeking over at Tyree's carving. "Looks real 'nough t' be wary of - who's it for?" It's always for someone! She pets back one of Rah's ears.
"Good night, Cam. Study well. And no body," Tyree says hastily on the matter of the wooden swan, somehow managing to sound anxious without actually looking like it. "Er, nobody. There's... it's nobody in mind." Rahier gets a very subtle little glance. Just tell the whole /mountain/ why don't you. Free wood carving expo, just go bother the one hare who doesn't like being bothered!
Ah, but Cameron is a growing buck.. and getting a kiss on the cheek kind of sends him off-kilter. Especially in front of others. His ears splay back and he is tugged sideways into the smooch before he ducks his head and glances at her with a startled, slightly awkward manner. "Ah..uh.. yeah.." Rah gets a quick look. "Right. Bye.." Then that flickering gaze meets with Tyree momentarily.. and he parts with the group fairly quickly.
Rahier is almost distracted from the subtle glance by the whole kiss-on-the-cheek thing, which is just amusing. But no, he notices, and shrugs a little to Ty. "S'really good, don't worry 'bout me. I'm jus' proud-a-ya." He rolls those syllables together almost into one word, grinning.
Sephora grins after Cam as he hurries off. "Lookit that, I c'n still get 'em flustered," she comments, and turns her attention back to Tyree. Her head tilts. Hmmmmm. That's a thoughtful smile there. Vaguely mischievous.
"I..." Tyree pauses noticeably when Rahier says that, the subtle glance turning into an even, pleased stare. He even leans forward a tiny bit. "I know, sah. Thank you." Poor Tyree. Buttered up so easily with just a few words of approval. Sephora, though... what is she planning? His ears twitch and twinge under that smile. "Um... yes?" he asks her.
And he is! Proud of him! The swan is certainly damn good looking. Anywho. The major's eyes turn dubiously between the little look they share, and Rah reaches up lightly to put his paw in front of Seph's nose. "Ha, dear, don't torture th'boy. At least not now, s'time t'go t'bed." For them both, apparently. The buck rises and puts his arm around the arm-perched Seph, to bring her to him. "S'gonna be hittin' th'hay f'us, Ty. Catch y'tomorrow?"
Sephora snorts, and nips at Rah's fingers, then leans sideways into him as he tugs her upright and in against him. "When'd we start sleepin' so early?" When you popped out a baby, Seph, maybe. She flashes Tyree a grin - he's safe. For now! "Nigh', Ty."
"Oh, ah... good night, sah. Miss." He bows to them both, always measured, always methodical, and straightens up as they leave. Once they're gone, he turns back to the little carved swan and picks it up, scrutinizing it just like he was before. He brushes some errant flakes off. Actually, it is quite an accomplishment. Perhaps it really is as good as they say? He huffs and shakes his head, turning to leave with his precious carving under his arm. It's not /perfect/ just yet. "Just a few more adjustments... just a few more..."
