Battalion Composition
Long Patrol Battalion Composition
Ideally, each standard battalion in the Long Patrol has at least one of the following companies; however, exceptions to this guide exist and the number of companies in battalions and their unit type can fluctuate as need demands. Battalions are usually commanded by majors, though colonels and captains can take command if needed (such as in the death of a major).
All companies must contain at least one commissioned officer (CO), typically a captain or lieutenant, and one sergeant. However the ideal number of officers in a company is two COs (A captain and lieutenant or sub-lieutenant) and two sergeants.
First Company
Made up of the most experienced and veteran Fighter hares in the battalion. They specialize in heavy melee combat and are often used to charge and break enemy lines. They are typically armed with the standard spear, dagger, and sling in addition to a melee weapon of their choice (such as a mace, sword, or ax).
Second Company
Made up of the least experienced hares in a battalion, a mix of fighters and runners. While they do not specialize in anything, they are expected to offer support and reinforce the other companies as needs, as well as act as the main battle-line to supplement the First Company. They are armed with the standard spear, dagger, and sling.
Guard Company
Made up of the second most experienced hares in the battalion, a mix fighters and runners. They specialize in both melee combat and skirmishing, and are expected to supplement both the First Company and Skirmish company when needed in addition to acting as the rear guard for the battalion.
Skirmish Company
Made up of the most experienced and veteran Runner hares in the battalion. They specialize in skirmishing and hit and run tactics, as well as scouting and ranged combat. They are typically armed with light weapons such as short bows, slings, daggers, and javelins, and are discouraged from carrying any weapon that would impede their movement such as a long bow or standard sword. When needed they are expected to fight in formation with the other companies on the main battle-line.
Archer Company
In some cases, a battalion may include a company of ranged troops, made up by runner and fighter hares who specialize in the use of Long Bows. While they are not expected to fight in melee combat and are instead generally placed either behind the other companies or to the flanks, they still have melee combat training. They are typically armed with a long bow, sword, dagger, and sling.
Note on Battalion Composition
Each company is made up of roughly 30 hares, though exact numbers fluctuate: additional companies (named Third, Fourth, etc) may be added to the battalion as needed, filling the same role as the Second Company.
