A simple Question
THIS HAPPENS SHORTY AFTER THE THE FEAST
Jake comes in from the entry, longbow on his back as he is on duty right now, he glaces around the room.
Honeyfern sighs a little as she stays in her chair by the steps.
Ribbert's eyes glide languidly shut then open again as his taciturn gaze drifts back to Lorimis and Biff. His tympana seem visibly to quiver at the familiar-sounding belch called from across the room. An expression akin to a smile creeps across his face. "Yore accent strenge, fur-tailed one," he calls in his creaky baritone.
Salome follows the attention of the others to the warty entrant. Nearly tumbling from her seat in simultaneous alarm and disgust--at both the toad and Monzcarro--the mouse tightly clenches the arms of the chair. "Now y-you don't s-see that every day, yes?" The words are devoid of focus, flung forth upon the hall with an utter disregard for etiquette. It takes her a minute to close her mouth, which falls slack after the last syllable.
Ribbert's next hop brings him near the waltzing mouse and hare. His half-lidded eyes watch the pair in evident bemusement.
Biff smiles."Hello jake.", Than she looks at ribbert."We got a odd accent eh..." She laughs."Well I guess I do if you think about it!"
Jake watches the danceing, intresting, he walks over to Honeyfern and smiles "Hey." He watches her a moment.
Lorimis gives Biff the Dip of her life.
Biff after the dance is done Biff rubs her head."I think I am going to get to bed...been a long day!"
Honeyfern looks up at Jake "Wot?"
Lorimis smiles "Thank you for making an old mouse's heart sing Lass."
"Ahh, fret ye not." says Monzcarro to Salome, "Right fine beasts when you know them." She thinks on this for a moment, "Well, some, at least." She waves the near-empty mug at the toad, grinning, "Mine accent poor, friend! Never able to achieve the rumble of your fine kin! Early for thee to be awake, seeking food and drink are ye?"
Biff smiles."Anytime Father Abbot!"
Biff walks up the stairs and out of sight...
Jake blinks and takes a couple steps back, ok did he do something to upset her? He frowns "Well...just,..ya left early, so..and was gonna ask...so you ok?"
Lorimis walks over to the Toad "Hello there" he offers a paw.
Honeyfern stands up as she was sitting and looks at him, "So..Yeah I am fine just alot going on tis all, its late..I should go to bed."
Lorimis smiles to Honeyfern.
Ribbert regards the paw quietly. "Ribbert not know yore ways, robed furry. Why hold foot at Ribbert?"
Lorimis says, "why we shake we offer a forleg each as a sign of friends, I am Lorimis"
Jake watches her but slowly steps in front of her, "I..wait, I been thinking alot and...and you seem to have given me a 2nd chance, and though maybe a 2nd chance with..something. " He sighs and looks around, fun beasts are here maybe he should go elsewhere, or not..he looks at Honeyfern.
Salome is hardly comforted by the bilingual rodent beside her. She fails to summon a vocal reply to Monzcarro, and clears her throat to pave the path for a second attempt. Still at a loss for words, the horrified mouse watches as the others speak to and even deign Ribbert worthy of civilized introductory gesticulations. "It must be lost," she decides.
Lorimis looks to Jake "Take the chance ya silly hare?"
Honeyfern stares at Jake, and folds her arms over her chest "Your being odd, just say it or go away..." she sighs "Sorry just tried" she offers a smile, "Wot?"
Ribbert's throat wobbles. "Friends? Ribbert not know no furry ones." Nevertheless, he lifts a hand to touch the paw.
Salome gags as Lorimis makes contact with the toad.
Lorimis skales the poaw "I'd like to be friends yes"
Ribbert's paw is shaked.
Lorimis says, "We have never had a Toad visit us before..can we get you anything? I am affraid we do not keep flies"
Monzcarro nods at Salome's thought, though she is less horrified and more interested in the plate of honey cakes she just discovered at her elbow. "They wake in the early spring after the thaw. A full season asleep, imagine how dazed ye'd be." A honeycake vanishes. "Mmnph, don't be so. Toadsong can be very moving ifn you catch them at it. not oft sung for others, though."
Jake backs up, "I should get back to the.." He looks at Lorimis "Long story sir, just past..but" He looks back to Honeyfern again and smiles, he speaks "No its important..Honeyfern umm, I don't remember how well I did this all those seasons ago...maybe I messed up badly, I know I did at one thing and sorry, so..gonna ask this again and this time promise a better outcome.." He clears his thoat as he kneels down "No umm...ring just the question..Honeyfern will you..you marry me?"
Ribbert takes his hand back from Lorimis' and appears to be about to respond, when Jake's proposal suddenly demands the attention of everyone in the vicinity, furred or not.
Lorimis says, "oh my..anotherpawfasting?"
Honeyfern watches Jake and looks around, she start to just leave but as he keeps talking she listens more closely, she just stands there after he is done and is silent, she looks around and blinks, she blushes as everyone is stareing at them now,she looks back to Jake and smiles softly "I.." She smiles and hugs him, "Yes."
Lorimis says, "Well this IS a nite to feast!"
"It can sing?" Salome is bewildered, and has not yet found the means to disguise it. "Oh heavens," she says, voice airy, "Did it leave a glop of goo in the abbot's dutiful palm?" The mouse squints, leaning in for a better view. As the others' attention is seized by the marriage proposal, the maid takes advantage of the diversion and rudely stares at Ribbert, the most freakish creature she has encountered in seasons.
Jake smiles and returns the hug, very happy now, he looks around and nods, "Ummm..hey" But he smiles still.
Lorimis says, "maybe we can get Flicky to paw fast you two"
Jake blinks "Didn't know Flicky could do that sort of ceomony"
Lorimis says, "Likely he can't" he chuckles.
Honeyfern smiles, she looks to the abbot "That's ok Father Abbot, maybe you can later on."
Ribbert's squashed features betray no hint of emotion. If furbeasts are inclined to puts rings on other furbeasts, or fasten their paws together, that's none of his concern. His tongue escapes his dry lips briefly as he waits patiently for the Abbot's attention to return to less frivolous matters.
Lorimis turns back to Ribbert "well where were we Mr Ribbert?
Jake smiles, he wraps an arm around Honeyfern, "I DO need to get back to wall duty so probally see you tomorrow." He ajust his longbow and heads out to the wall slowly.
Ribbert blinks dully. "Ribbert in Hall of walled furry home."
Lorimis looks around "oh my yes I would say that is true."
Monzcarro laughs softly, "All beasts can sing. Some are just better than others," she says. "Toadsong is more a history chant than anything but ye need the ear for it." She withdraws the honeycake she had been devouring to whistle at the departing Jake. "What, no kiss for thine bride?" she teases, laughing all over again as he exits blushing.
Honeyfern nods as he heads out and smiles, she twirls a couple times and sits down.
