SCENE: Salamandastron training room
CHARACTERS: All hares.
Dominik, male. Felicity, female. Zolomon, male.
LOG:
It's a little later in the afternoon, and the last of Dominik's boxing classes had ended...this was evident from the small line of bruised and battered students that filed down the hallway and away from the general direction of the training room and boxing cavern, most of them grumbling in some form or another. Dom, in the meantime, had decided to use the time after his classes had finished to do some more work on fixing up and building some new training dummies...the ones currently in the room could most certainly do with some sprucing up, to say the least. And so that is where the large hare can be found...near the back of the room, his small set of tools spread around him, and a couple of blocks of wood sitting there at his side. He works quietly, carving and chipping away at a block of wood, eyes fixed intently upon his work as he does his best to make it look somewhat like the other dummies. There is a content expression upon Dom's face, however, as the massive hare seemed to enjoy this type of work.
Well, all the peace and quite is about to be relatively shattered. Felicity enters, still in uniform with sand on her pants legs and a stormy expression adorning her face. So very different from that her friend has. She goes over to one of the other dummies and gives it a twirling, powerful kick with one of her mighty Runner's legs. The dummy gives a slight splintering sound, then more sounds as the Sergeant kicks it again with her other leg.
Others entering and exiting the room don't seem to phase the large buck; it is something that happens quite often throughout the day, and so as Felicity enters he really doesn't pay any extra attention. His ears perk for a moment and give a twitch, eyes still fixed on his work as he softly begins to hum an old tune that had suddenly decided to pop into his head. Upon hearing the crack of the dummy as Felicity's first kick connects, however, Dom lifts his gaze and shifts it over towards his friend. He watches quietly as she aims another kick at the older dummy...that one was likely on the agenda to be fixed, anyway. He was also aware that the doe's temper would flare up every now and then, though in most cases there tended to be a reason for it. "Erm. Making more verk for Dom, I see?" he replies in a joking tone, the buck giving his friend a smile for a moment. "...everything okay, Felicity?" he says, in a more serious tone.
Felicity gives the dummy another kick before her friend makes his comments. Standing both feet on the ground again, she turns and looks at him, her mood not having been improved by her attack on the wooden figure. "Sorry....no, nothin's okay." She stalks over to him. "Zeldove 'as left th'Patrol, and Zolomon tried t'find 'er by leavin' th'Mountain while on duty wi' no weapons! If 'is Lordship an' I 'adn't found 'im when we 'ad, 'e'd prob'ly be dead right now!" She crosses her arms, still thoroughly upset. "An' 'e's lost 'is 'appiness agin, an' I dunno if 'e's gonna recover this time, an'..." And she's obviously worried! Tears are threatening now, which is probably better than her kicking things.
Dominik sits up a little more, more of his attention shifting in Felicity's direction as she explains the reasoning behind her current mood. As she mentions Zolomon, the buck smirks a little...he should've known that one would've had something to do with this. Lifting a large paw, the buck gives a heavy sigh and rubs his forehead slowly, eyes closing. "To me, it seems like Zolomon is alvays doing these things, yes? Vun vould think ve should be used to this by now," he half-jokes, his expression one that seems to say 'here we go again'. "Vun vould think that vun vould have enough sense to at least arm himself if deciding to leave. Or to put together group, to go look for friend. Not alvays using noggin, is that vun..." Dom hrms. "Is sorry is not happy, but...in Patrol, is not alvays place for happiness. Things happen, all the times. It is to be expected. Vun still has to learn to function no matter vat happens." The buck sets his tools down for a moment, paws resting on his legs as he watches his friend.
Felicity scowls, blinking away the tears. "I know, but....first Zolomon was engaged to Tarsa, an' she was murdered. Now 'is second fiance, Zeldove, 'as run off an' left 'im. Dom, I'm worried 'bout m'friend. I know 'e's really 'ot'eaded an' impulsive, but I'm still worried." This is the kind of worry for Dom she had that she never showed him, but expressed to others. Dom's turn to see it!
Dominik nods his head slowly. "Yes. Is not bad thing, to be vorried, Lissie. Is showing that you have beeg heart, and care about friends." He smiles a little, eyes shifting down towards his paws, which he flexes. "This vorry is major thing that helped Dom, ven he needed help the most. Some others, did not care. Vanted to ship Dom away from mountain for good. But you did not, you stayed at Dom's side even ven could have been hurt. Is somethink Dom vil not forget." The buck nods. "Is sure Zolomon appreciates friendship as well, is nothink wrong vith vanting him to be happy. As cold as it may sound to say, sometimes ve cannot help things that happen, no? Vat matters is how ve handle things next, vunce that initial time passes. He vil be sad for avhile, but as before, he vil recover."
Felicity sits down beside the huge mountain hare and buries her face in her knees, hugging her legs close to her chest. She listens, then lets the silence stretch for a bit. "....you're right. 'Course y'are. I just don't like surprises like this....I'll stay 'is friend, aye, an' give 'im time, like Lord Ciocan said." She peers out at him. "An' o'course I stayed. Y'm'friend. Whot else was I s'possed t'do?" She believes there was no other option other than to try and help him.
Dominik leans over as Felicity sits beside him, and he gives her a strong, firm hug with one arm, patting her shoulder gently before releasing her. "Hmm. Yes. Is disappointing Zeldove left, but...if she did not vant to be here, it is likely for the best. Is military, is not vacation home, yes?" he chuckles softly. "If do not belief, ask students..." the buck grins a little, obviously getting some enjoyment out of his reputation amongst them. "But yes, time heals. Look at Dom, as example. Ven was out in swamp, looking for...did you ever think Dom vould end up back here?" The buck tilts his head a little. "Can be honest." As she mentions the reason why she stuck by him, the buck gives a more genuine smile. "Is...not somethink Dom is used to. Northern hares are, vun can say, a bit...flighty, am supposing? Do not form many friendships...is more a solitary life, despite living vith families. And so Dom is not used to such things. Is still taking time to comprehend. But, is appreciating, yes."
Felicity is hugged, and that brings back the tears. She doesn't really get hugged by friends, and she really needed that right now. His kindness is threatening to melt her into a teary, snotty puddle. "'Tis true....but she could've left th'Patrol without leavin' th'Mountain an' breakin' Zolomon's 'eart..." She sniffles and rubs her eye with a paw. "Y'old life sounds lonely, t'be 'onest. 'M glad we live 'ere. At least we 'ave friends 'ere, even when they're bein' dumb." She avoids the question about if she thinks he would have ended up back here. She kind of doesn't want to be honest about that.
Dominik thinks about that for a moment, his ears giving a waggle. "Hmm. Is true, she could have. But, she didn't. Vat vent into decision, perhaps ve vil never know. Perhaps she thought it vas best thing to do, to avoid hurting Zol for other reasons. It is hard to get into others' brains and know vat is going in there, yes?" He chuckles, obviously referring to himself to a certain extent with that comment. "Zolomon has kind heart, bit of soft heart. Falls in love too easy. Is never good thing, alvays result in things like this. Dom...vil never fall for things like this. Is...also part of living solitary life..." The large buck chuckles, eyes lifting to fall on Felicity. "Yes, vas very quiet life, but...ven it is all vun knows, vun has nothink to compare to, to realize is lonely." He shrugs. "Had plenty of time to build ships, barrels...other things. Time vas vell spent, vil say." He nods to her comment about having friends here. "Hmm. Dom does not seem to have many friends, besides Lissie. The more Dom thinks about, the more Dom understand vhy..." he chuckles. "But is okay. Dom has leverets, has Lissie. Does not need much more than this."
Felicity snorts derisively, then pulls out a hankie and blows her nose. "Aye, I've been tryin' t'get int'Julia's mind foh /seasons/, wi' no luck." She looks at him curiously. "Y'don't want t'get married an' 'ave leverets o' y'own someday, Dom? I thought f'sure y'would, y'like 'em so much." She accepts his comments about having her as a friend and not needing much else at face value. "Sometimes I wish I 'ad th'quiet life of a fahmah. Then m'parents an' brothah'd still be 'ere, an' I wouldn't always be worried I'd be doin' wrong by Julia."
Dominik cannot help but grin at the mention of wanting to know what's going on inside Julia's brain. "To be honest, Lissie, getting into brain of leveret would probably make one's own brain explode..." he chuckles. "Am sure there are so many thoughts and ideas running around inside at all times. Hard to keep up vith. But, Julia is meaning lots to Dom. Even vith misbehavings sometimes, she is sveet...and cares very much for her sister." He gives Felicity a warm smile. "Lissie has done wonderful job vith raising. Of course, there are bad times, but...vun has to take bad vith good, and in this case, is more good than bad, yes?" The buck's head tilts as he peers down at the doe, as she mentions him not wanting to be married. "Heh, vell, vil just say, is not life Dom ever thought he vould live, is fine vith vat he has. Already has many leverets to vatch, having own vould only make it more difficult..." he laughs. The buck nods as she mentions wanting to be a farmer, "Hmmm. Yes, sometimes ve do look back and vish things vere different, if ve had only chosen a different vay to live. But...instead of lives lost, think of all the lives that have been saved..." He reaches a paw over to gently rest it on Felicity's shoulder. "Made right choice, Lissie. Vas meant to be here."
Felicity chuckles. "Tha's true....may'ap I /don't/ want t'know what all she's thinkin'..." She smiles really, really big at the compliments he is giving her about her 'parenting'. But instead of questioning him, she just goes on to the next topic. "Well, if 'tis not somethin' y'evah wanted, then 'tis alright. Me, I dream 'bout gettin' married someday, so I'll keep 'opin' f'r it." She lets him rest his paw on her arm. "Aye, I do. I can think o' many creatahs who've been able to live 'cause o'my bein' in th'Patrol. Just...sometimes my 'eart gets weary, y'know? I get tired. 'Tis 'ard sometimes. But I won't give up. I just really miss m'fam'ly, is all."
Dominik gives Lissie a nod, his paw giving her arm a squeeze. "Yes, and Dom is hoping this happens, too, someday, for Lissie. Vould make good mother, and vould make husband proud." The buck gives her a smile. "Is fine to have dreams, gives vun things to look forward to beside Patrol duties. Dom is knowing this vil happen. And vil be expecting invite to wedding," he jokes. As she mentions being exhausted and missing her family, he sighs softly, ears folding back. "Yes, is normal things, missing families, is normal, to be tired. Ven seeing things ve see, constantly, having to do things ve do, every day, it definitely vears on one's brain and makes it hard. But...it only shows vun's strength ven they are able to put the feelings aside, and put velfare of Western Shore, of other innocent creatures, ahead of their own. It takes special kind of brain, special kind of heart to do this." The buck gives Lissie a warm smile. "Lissie has both of these things, in abundance."
Felicity chuckles. "Oh, aye, y'bettah be at m'weddin'. Could make y'th'flowah buck." She laughs at that idea. Then blushes, her ears drooping to cover her eyes at his compliment. "Oh....well.....'m just doin' th'right thing, y'know? 'Tis nothin' special..." So embarrassing! After a few seconds, she tries to lamely change the subject. "Why'd y'come t'th'Mountain? I feel like ye've told me befoh, but I can't remembah foh sure. I was born 'ere, so I didn't 'ave t'travel fah t'join, unlike some o' these Recruits."
Dominik cannot help but laugh at that. "Hmm. Vould accept gracious offer, but...has Julia for this, vould make much better flower-girl than Dom. Besides, vouldn't be able to find dress that fits..." he jokes with a playful grin. As Felicity modestly deflects his compliments and changes the subject, he can see her getting a little embarrassed, and so he goes right along with the subject change. He falls silent at the question, the big buck's mind turning as he tries to think of the best and most simple way to explain it. "Dom came to mountain to one day find and end lives of vermin who did the same to family," he finally replies, his tone shifting into one slightly chillier than it had been, previously. "That...is main purpose. Other things have come into picture since arriving, but...if is being honest, is main reason Dom is here." He picks up the hammer and chisel he had previously set down, and once again begins to carefully chip away at the block of wood in front of him.
Felicity silently chastises herself for bringing up such a hard topic into their conversation. Oh, well, too late now. "They couldn't've been a 'uge 'orde marchin' down the shore. Were they seafarin' vermin?" She shifts and gets more comfortable(ish, since she's sitting on the hard floor). "'Twas searats whot killed m'fam'ly."
Dominik continues to quietly work on the block of wood, the buck taking his time answering Felicity's question. Finally, he nods in response. "...yes. Vas vermin horde, searats. Moved up and down coast, looking for most vunerable places. Dom vas avay during attack. They somehow knew. Ven Dom returned, family vas gone. Village vas gone." He frowns, taking an extra large chip out of the block of wood as he strikes the chisel a little harder than he intended. He takes a deep breath, before continuing.
Zolomon picks now to walk in and go to the far back of the room to do some sit ups and push ups. He is out of uniform and has a somple outfit on to do some simple exercise.
Felicity frowns. "'M sorry. We....we don't have t'talk 'bout it anymoh, if y'don't want to." She stuffs her hankie back into her pocket. "Th'searats who killed m'fam'ly are all gone, thank goodness. They shipwrecked just south o' 'ere. M'brothah was out collectin' shells foh me an' Julia. We wear 'em every day." She holds out the shell she always wears to show him. "They attacked 'im an' o'erpowahed 'im, even though 'e put up a good fight. M'parents led the charge the next day t' 'unt th'vermin down. They slayed 'em all, no survivours, although both m'parents an' a numbah o' othah brave 'ares lost their lives in th'process. We gathahed the wood from their ship -- the /Bladesail/, 'twas called -- an' th'Smiths an' Cooks used it t'fuel their fires." She notes Zolomon's entrance and waves to him.
Dominik listens quietly as Felicity speaks of the vermin that had taken her own family's lives. His ears perk as the large buck listens, his attention focused on his work as he continues to carefully chip away at the block of wood in front of him with the hammer and chisel. As Felicity mentions the name of the ship, Dom tenses up almost immediately, his paw clutching the hammer tightly til his knuckles are white. His stare almost seems to bore holes right into the wood in front of him, and his jaw clenches tightly. The massive hare begins to tremble, a little, as well, and from the look within his eyes, he is likely not in a very good place. Slowly, his eyes fall on Felicity. "...vat...vas name of ship, again?" he asks, his voice quiet, but rather tense at the same time.
Zolomon doesnt wave he just sits there after sit ups and push ups
Felicity frowns at Zolomon's lack of reaction, but that is very quickly overwhelmed by her going on guard as Dominik starts to react rather poorly. Her paws raise slightly in an instinctive placating gesture. "Um, th'/Bladesail/, love. Why? Is it familiah?" She's keeping a wary eye on him, just to make sure he doesn't start freaking out. She glances at the weapons....I mean, carpentry tools he has in his paws, her brain rapidly jumping to how she could get them away from him should he go all Erg on them again.
Dominik goes silent once again as Felicity repeats the name of the ship involved in the incident she mentioned. He rolls this information around in his brain, that name most certainly all too familiar to him, and the mention of it brings back a few not so pleasant memories. Namely, of the buck standing there watching as the ship sailed off, unable to do anything about it as by the time he'd arrived they were already too far out to sea to pursue. "The...Bladesail," he repeats, his voice still quiet. "...Bladesail. And...you say...all...on ship...are dead? All vermin...are gone?" His voice trembles a little as he asks the question, and although he already knows what the answer will be, he still dreads hearing it. Erg is likely not going to appear, but it also doesn't necessarily mean that Dom is taking the news well.
Felicity hesitates, then points to the tools he's still holding. "I'll tell y'only aftah y'put those down. Please?" She waits to see if he complies with her request, not really fancying what could happen if he doesn't.
Zolomon finally looks over curious but stays quiet. No emtion at all, blank faced.
Dominik gives the chisel one last strike with the hammer, and it embeds the spike deep into the wood. A moment later, he drops the hammer to the floor, his gaze training on Felicity once again. He doesn't speak, the large buck simply waiting for her to answer his questions. His expression twitches a little, his paws clenched at his sides as he stares at the doe.
Felicity swallows. "Aye, all th'vermin from th'/Bloodsail/ are dead. Every one was 'unted down an' accounted foh. Some actually got eaten by toads, if 'tis any consolation. Now y'tell me: why is this such a big deal t'ya? An' don't tell me 'tis not." She meets his gaze steadily, not showing any fear, and not looking away.
Zolomon frowns a little and stands walking over to them slowly.
Oooh. That little bit of information about the toads more than likely did not help things at all. "They are...dead. All of them? Every...vun?" he repeats. "None are left?" It is most definitely a different Dom than the one Felicity had been speaking with not a few moments before. His trembling increases, his ears both folding back against his head. "No. NO!!!" With a growl, the large buck strikes out at the dummy he'd been working on, and he breaks it clean in two with a blow of his paw. He rises to his footpaws, picking the two halves up and flinging them across the room. "NO! Is not true! CANNOT be true!" He seethes, tears springing to his eyes as his expression is incredulous.
Felicity hops up and gestures for Zolomon to stay back. "Aye....I'm sorry. They were th'ones who killed y'fam'ly, weren't they?" She's not dumb, she can make educated guesses. "Oh, Dom, I'm sorry." She has compassion in her voice, her expression. She stands there, waiting to see what he does next, knowing words probably won't help just yet.
Zolomon stays close but not to close as he watches Dom closely in case he gets out of control.
Dominik can really think of nothing else to do in that moment of time but simply turn away. His head lowering, chin touching his chest, the buck's shoulders heave, and he lets out an anguished growl/cry. It likely was a good thing Zolomon wasn't standing in his path...he likely would have gotten unintentionally bowled over as the large hare strides over in the direction of the door. He ducks out of the room, his footsteps heard echoing loudly down the corridor as Dom exits swiftly, and more than likely makes his way back down in the direction of the caverns.
Zolomon watches him head off and then salutes Felicity and heads on out to likely just sleep.
"Wait, Dom!" Felicity can guess where the huge buck is going, and she rreeeaaaaalllllyyy doesn't want to have to deal with Erg again, which is where she's afraid his mind might be headed. "Oh, crap," she mutters. Then Zolomon salutes her and leaves. The doe just stands there in the room, alone. Tears well up in her eyes. "Whot 'ave I done?" She quietly asks herself. As tears course down her cheeks, she quietly leaves the room, abandoning the chaos and hiding somewhere secluded to cry while she gives Dom some space to do the same...

Thanks for reading!
Thanks for letting us know! I hope you can come back someday.
Many blessings <3
The title, though x'D
...she quickly alternates between giving it a hug and then holding it out to look at it "It's like havin' a sistah!...But a good one" aka one who's not Julia.
That's when I lost it x'D
Okay, so!
All the YMCAs in my area are closed. Restaurants and coffee shops are carry-out/drive through only.
However, I have friends who are letting me come over to their houses to use their WiFi, including for the MUCK. And another friend has loaned me her hotspot for emergencies.
However, I am struggling with my math. I am planning on still coming on on Saturdays, but because of how difficult math is for me, I'm not sure if I'll have the time to come on on other days. I'll have to see.
Okay, first up: Everyone just take a deeeeeeeep breath while counting to 3. Hold it for a count of 3. Let it out slowly, counting to 3. Let's do this a couple times until we feel a little better.
Okay.
Okay.
I know everyone is probably dead tired of hearing about this pandemic, and I fully understand. I also fully understand being afraid. It's normal, and it's okay to be scared, especially with something we none of us have lived through.
But I want this to be a comment thread where we can avoid talking about how scary it is and instead focus on practical things, as well as encouraging each other.
Breathe...

My college has gone online-only until April 10th, at least. My library is closed to patrons coming in. So far I can get to the YMCA, but if that changes, I may start hanging out at the houses of friends because I don't have internet at home. I will do my best to still get on at least once a week.
It's okay; let's try to not freak out. I mean, just look at the small percentage of people who actually die from this and just try to not endanger those people. I'm planning on continuing my life in as much of my normal way of doing things as I can, and if I get sick with anything, I'll just stay home.
With my college closed, I don't know as of yet how it will affect my on-campus job as a tutor. I'm hoping to get an update about it sometime this next week.
I am still planning on doing the ball in Salamandastron on the 19th, and I hope each and every one of you who has a hare on the Western Shores comes, too. We can't infect each other through the internet, and we need to keep these things that bring us happiness and fun in our lives, as well as continuing to celebrate things, or we will go insane from the panic. Please continue to come on, no matter how much fear the media tries to feed into us. Please?
And you know what? Some things are still okay. I walked outside, and there were birds singing. Spring is still happening, making everything pretty. I still have my friends I can hang out with, even though the city my church is in has forbidden us from having services. I still have my kitties who love me and help me stay sane. There are things that are still okay.
~*~
Consider this the place where we can warn each other about possible internet access issues.
And remember to mention things that are still good.
Thanks for sharing!
Ohmicow, Greg is so grumpy xD
LOL, D.R. probably doing something reckless xD
Nice! Thanks for sharing ![]()
Oh, thanks! I love to draw, so I'm glad I do it well ![]()
Squee! They're so cute!!
Hey, y'all! Well, the scanner is still crap, so I just broke down and took photos of my bigger drawings. I also have scanned some older pictures from when I was a newbie. So here we go!
~*~
Let's do DoraRose first!

These 4 are all from within the first year or 2 after I joined, so they're not so great. But do remember enjoying drawing her and designing her clothes, and what she looked like ![]()
This one, though:
I finished it like a week ago, and I'm very pleased with it. First successful manga mouse! And I'm happy with how her axe, Nightsong, came out. When she's fighting or training, she wears all black, but I didn't feel like dealing with that when colouring it, so I just put in her colours. WHATEVER ![]()
~*~
I also draw Blisa a lot. I have cats, so they're what I feel most comfortable drawing because I can observe them a lot.

This I think may have been my first ever drawing of Blisa.

This picture is of her dancing with a ribbon. I thought it would be cute for an RP, but we never did it. Oh, well. It was fun to imagine, at least.

These are from when I started learning how to draw better (via some manga instruction books from Impact books), but I didn't quite understand how to make it look 3D. So while they look better, they're not as good as they could be.

Same with this one. Have I mentioned that I enjoy designing clothes? Because I enjoy designing clothes

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the only picture I have drawn so far of Basilisk (Basil), Blisa's pet snake. Yes, he is huge; how else is she supposed to ride him into battle? ![]()

Eyes are easy for me, so I tend to draw them a lot ![]()
And here are some newer, better drawings of my cat char:

See? I've improved! ![]()
~*~
I've also drawn my hares!
Felicity:

Here's a close-up of her head so you can see her eyes better:
And here's her eye ![]()

I've also drawn Julia (with dolly)!
Auburn is a difficult colour to reproduce; it usually involves lots of layering O.o
~*~
Here is a drawing of DoraRose's mother (whom nobody has ever ICly met 'cause she died a little while after D.R. left home):
~*~
I've drawn Zarok!
But not recently
So he's not as good as he could be:

(Talking to DoraRose in the 2nd drawing.)
~*~
I've also drawn Scioto (Blisa's father)!

Those are in order from oldest to newest. As you can see, I've improved, for sure! ![]()
~*~
Vladmir Stormfeather, villain of the Thorns of Steel TP, which I co-ran the first summer I was a member here.
~*~
Benar! I had soooo much fun fluffing up his tail and ears ![]()

~*~
That's all for now. I hope you enjoy them ![]()
Oz and I are discussing what the amulet should look like, so hopefully soon we will have a desc of it for y'all soon ![]()
What a plot twist! ![]()
Hope to RP tomorrow!! ♡
So, Patch really hates Bladefur xD
Ah, but he'd only be able to be in with the leverets for half of the thing; he'd be forced to at bare minimum leave when the 2nd caretaker squad came. We could say Felicity somehow (with her friendship magic?) convinced him to go for part of the ball, if you'd like to still RP there, but you're not sure if Dom would go or not. **Shrugs**
On March 1st, 2012, I turned a decision I had made into reality. I had been exploring the MUCK for a few months as a guest to see if I wanted to join, and on that day 8 years ago, I changed my guest into an actual character. I decided I wanted a mouse because while they don't have any special characteristics the way squirrels and moles and stuff do, they are very brave and can be the greatest heroes. I wanted her to look kind of like me, with brown hair and blue eyes. I wanted her to be a Warrior, so I gave her an awesome sword. And I wanted to honour my best friends, Dora the cat and Rose, my little kitten who died when she was about 5 weeks old. The first character I RPed with on that, my first day playing DoraRose -- RPing on the MUCK, period -- was Zarok.
Now, 8 years later, I am still here, with many fun experiences behind me and hopefully even more ahead. I want to thank everyone for giving me so much fun and adventure and friendship over the years. I love hanging out with y'all.
However, there are a bunch of new players on here, and I would like y'all's advice. What do you wish us older players would remember? What are some things that come from being newer do you think we've forgotten? If you don't have a forums account, that's okay; pmail it to me, and I'll copy-paste it onto here as a comment.
And older players: What advice would you like to impart? What's something you wish you knew when you were new?
My advice is: Don't let people treat you poorly. You are worth far more than that. If you are having a problem with another player on the MUCK, don't run away. Don't just leave the MUCK just because you have a problem.
There are a pair of players who interrupted one of my RPs -- the finale for a TP, in fact -- who also basically destroyed all the RP on the MUCK from being such control freaks. I almost left, but my friends convinced me to stay and instead email Otter. I'm so glad I did, and now I'm braver and more sure of myself, so I'm ready to email Otter should those players come back and start causing problems again.
And I believe this is what we should do. Instead of leaving, we should email Otter (brianj@otterspace.com). And instead of talking to other players about an issue we have with a certain player, we should try to talk to that player. These jerk players said I was "hurting people" (among other things), yet no one had asked me to stop doing any of the things they were complaining about! We should talk to the person who's causing problems (as well as Otter) instead of gossiping around about them.
Another thing we should do is ask the people we actually hang out with about things that have been brought to our attention and see what they have to say.
So, that's the hard lesson I've learned in the past 8 years. What do you guys have to say? ![]()

Hares:
Gregorian, male; Terrence, male; Zeldove, female; Zolomon, male; Felicity, female. Various spoofs.
Badgers:
Ciocan, male.
LOG:
Technically it was Greg's afternoon off. That turned in to a few hours off before the kids were let free upon their parents which then was turning in to doing paperwork in his free time until finally it settled in to having a drink and playing cards on top of the paperwork as he ignored it for now. Sat alone it was relatively quiet in the rec room with most still on duty so Greg actually had some time to quietly relax and try not to think too much as he played a solo card game.
Felicity has the day off, too! And since Julia is in school, she has a number of hours literally to herself to do with as she pleases. She's been sewing some because her little sister has hit a growth spurt and suddenly all of her dresses are too short. So it's time to let down the hems! The auburn-furred Runner now slips into the Rec room, a very battered haversack on her back. It has LAKEWOOD embroidered on the flap, indicating that it either used to be her mother's or her uncle's. Spotting the Smith, the Sergeant gets a slightly wicked little grin, and she comes up to him. "'Llo, Greg!" She then goes to give him a great big hug! She may be taking fiendish delight in making him uncomfortable.
Gregorian's ear turns to acknowledge someone's coming his way but before he can finish his train of thought and look in his own time he's suddenly being hugged! He startles and looks surprised plus a bit confused "Ah!...Felicity?" an eyebrow raises but he does at least go to pat her on the back in traditional bro hug fashion and so that it might end faster "Wot has yah all excitable tahday?" he's more confused than anything. What's he done to get hugs?
Success! Felicity grins and releases him. "Oh, nothin'....just thought I'd give m'friend a 'ug, wot!" She pulls up a chair to the opposite side of his table and plops down into it, setting her bag on the floor at her side. In actuality, she's been wanting to do something innocuous ever since he made Terrence hug her when she was crying (instead of hugging her himself) in order to make him uncomfortable. Making him confused is close enough. "I thought I'd 'eard 'twas y'day off, Greg. Whot're y'doin' sittin' 'ere wi' papahwork in front o' you?"
Gregorian raises his eyebrow a little more before he shakes his head with a hint of amusement on his face. Just a hint of course. It's easily missed "Wotevah makes yah happy" his discomfort is rather mood dependant. Currently he seems fine and nothing has already made him uncomfortable so hugging, provided it's brief, is apparently accepted. Just once though. Singular hug permitted. Multiple may push it. He glances under his cards at the papers "Eh, the day off became the aftahnoon off but yah know, no one evah tells the work tah stop pilin' up because I'm takin' a break...Wot yah got there?" he nods at the bag.
Felicity will definitely hug him again when they're both off duty. She has no problems being annoying sometimes with her friends. She picks her bag up. "Oh, this was m'mums, from before she married Dad. I use it t'carry my art." She opens the bag and pulls out a sketchbook and a box of drawing pencils. "Drawin' is one o' th'thin's I like t'do t'relax."
Ciocan walks in about now with a sigh, a couple hares following him"But tis a jolly well good idea say wot?" The other hare nods "Yes..fun, and relaxing and..good food cant forget the food"An eyebrow is arched "And no uniforms...even dress ones..."The badger sighs and shrugs "Fine, but dont look for me to attend it"
Gregorian sets down his current hand of cards as the sketchbook is pulled out and he peers over at it "Hmm? I didn't know yah drew" he's clearly curious to see her work but it's hard to miss the badger in the room. Given Greg's off duty he only offers a casual salute for his Lordship and he doesn't stand up "Sah" he looks puzzled by what he's overheard though "Wot's happenin' now?"
Felicity grins. "Aye, I love t'draw..." she trails off as the badger comes in. "Whot's this all 'bout, sah?" She looks between the other hares and the Lord of the Mountain. "I'm all f'r fun an' not 'avin' t'be in uniform an' eatin' scads o' good food!" Her paw is resting on her sketchbook, ready to start showing off her drawings once the conversation returns to it.
Ciocan just goes to sit down, he may as well as the two hares seem super excited "A Ball....like a jolly dance and fun and his Lordship said ok...so we can like plan it!" "It will be jolly well great!"
Gregorian looks surprised at the idea of a ball "Oh..." that didn't sound very enthusiastic. He tries again "Oh! How...excellent...that will be" he fails. His tone sounds more like dread.
Felicity is a bit more excited that her 2 friends, but she, too, seems to have a bit of dread. "Oh, a Ball! That sounds fun, actually, 'specially if th'leverets 'ave theih own little pahty so we parents an' siblings don't 'ave t'worry 'bout 'em. Oh..." she glances down at her outfit, which is a much-patched pair of leggings and tunic. "Oh.....but I only 'ave dresses that are fancy...."
Ciocan gets a drink "Isn't A Ball..fancy...sort of...?" He decides to slip off as the two over excited hares that came with him seem to be getting to him right now, One hare hmmms "I don't think his Lordship is coming." The other one shrugs and grins "But a Ball!"They giggle, yes these two hares are for sure super excited"Oh she is right we need..something to wear that's just the best".."For sure top notch"They go to discuss this at a table, ever so often one will get more excited than the other.
The enthusiasm of the two hares just increases Greg's dread "With those two organisin' it we'll have half the mountain clamberin' for frills and sequins" he mutters once they're out of hearing range. A heavy, irritated sigh and he flops back in his chair with a frown. There's a pause before another heavy sigh and he seems to have given up the fight already and accepted that he's doomed "The tailor in Halyard retired and his son's nowhere near as good...apparently" he rolls his eyes to the ceiling, mentally cursing the source of his knowledge "The best dressmakah runs a bed and breakfast out of her home, I'll give yah directions"
Felicity shakes her head. "No, I don't need any moh fancy clothes. I 'ave all m'mum's old clothes, an' they fit...." she decides to not add that she's a head taller than her mother ever was, with proportionately longer arms, so the skirts and sleeves are all a bit on the short side. "Besides, I'll be too busy makin' Julia an' 'er dolly matchin' dresses t'even think o' goin' t' 'Alyahd. I'll just 'ave t'live wi' it.....it's just....skirts make me feel...." She hesitates as she tries to think of something other than 'exposed' or 'uncomfortable'.
Gregorian tilts his head and looks her over "Huh...I thought yah mum was on the shortah side" he nods along to the last bit "Aye. Dressin' up fancy is not my sort of thing but it was my wifes. She loved this stuff though she'd have tah spend half of them convincin' me tah dance. Yah learn tah compromise sometimes"
Felicity looks flustered. "Oh....Mum was. Short'n I am. But....th' dresses still work...I think....." She scowls darkly at him. "Well, y'bettah come t'this one, laddie buck, sah!" Her awkwardness is evident right now. "If only t'protect me from the ninnies who're always mockin' me 'cause I'm raisin' m'sistah. Oooh, I bet they're gonna be theh in full force, flirtin' wi' all th'bucks an' actin' like they're all 'igh an' mighty 'cause they're families 'ave been at Salamandastron since th'time o' Lady Cregga...."
Gregorian raises an eyebrow at her again "Hrm. Forced intah these things by a doe. Apparently times don't change that much" he starts to frown again as she describes the mocking does "Mm. They're still botherin' yah then...I wish I knew a way tah have them leave yah alone. I can make their lives hell in uniform but it won't make yah friends...I'd take havin' a partnah ovah flirtin' with a crowd any day though...I don't even come from hares, yah family have been here longah than mine"
Felicity crosses her arms, scowling at the table top. She starts fiddling with her sketchbook and pencil box, straightening them in an attempt to make herself feel better. "They're just a bunch o' jerks.....wish I could make 'em all leave me 'lone," she finishes softly. Then she looks utterly confused and looks up at him. "Wait, not from 'ares? Whot's /that/ s'possed t'mean?"
"They are and one day they may grow out of it but yah'll have a good head start on them" Greg agrees before smiling faintly when she asks "Ah, me and my sistah were found by ottahs on their rivah when we were just babes. They looked of course, asked around the area but we nevah did figure out where we came from or wot happened tah our parents. We stayed with the ottahs, they became family. Perhaps not in yah traditional fathah, mothah, family but I got a whole lot of aunts and uncles. I come from ottahs" he snorts with amusement "And I'd like tah see yah jerks try tellin' me that's a bad thing" he finally nods back at her sketchbook "Now, yah want tah show me some drawin's?"
Felicity smiles. "I think 'tis lovely, Greg. Family is family. May'ap I c'n meet some o' y'fam'ly someday, wot!" She smiles down at her sketchbook and opens it to the 3rd page. "The first couple o' pages are scribbles o' Julia's, but the rest are mine." She turns the book around so the drawings are right-side-up for him. They're pretty good. You can actually tell who each drawing is of. On this page are sketches of Zolomon. As they turn deeper into the sketchbook, the drawings will be of Terrence, Julia, Grace, Ciocan, Dom, Felicity's family members, and Greg himself. There are also some mice drawn throughout. "I like t'draw m'friends an' fam'ly. I see 'em ofetn enough, 'tis good practice."
Gregorian chuckles "There's a couple of them in Mossflowah but the rest are far tah the south where I come from" he might go on but he gets distracted by the drawings "Huh, these are good. Ha, yah got Grace tah stay still long enough tah draw. There's a feat" he strokes his beard at the first drawing of himself as if reminded what he looks like these days "I recognise the hares but not the mice"
Felicity laughs. "No, I just drew y'daughtah an' m'sistah from mem'ry. No way could I get a leveret t'sit still!" She points to each of the mice in turn. "These are friends from Redwall. Y'got DoraRose, Gatekeepah and fearsome Warrior. This is 'er 'usband, Leon. 'E was th'Mastah 'Ealah o' th'Abbey. These are their twin children, LilyMoore an' Caleb. Lily's th'Bellringah. I've been t'Redwall once, an' DoraRose an' Leon 'ave visited Salamandastron in th'past." She turns another page to reveal some sketches of ships at sea, and some sea birds doing various things. "Thank y', Greg. I love t'draw, so I'm glad I do a good job o' it."
Opening the door as gently as he can, Terrence makes his way inside intent on getting a drink. The sergeant pauses in his quest when he spots Gregorian and Felicity, offering a smile and a left-pawed wave. "Hello there, you two." Continuing to go stand at the bar now he orders something and turns back to face the pair. "So," he says, glancing briefly at the sketchbook in the doe's paws, "Mind if I intrude and ask what's that?"
Zolomon walks in, humming to himself and is in a good mode.He grins as he walks over to the others "Did ya all hear about de Ball? It sounds fun.I like fun...we need fun around here right? "
Gregorian chuckles "Memorisin' them does sound easiah than havin' them sit still" he leans over to look at the mice as they're pointed out. He's got a table, a little under half a drink left and a pile of paperwork he's been ignoring under a set of cards "Ah, abbey folk" he nods in understanding. At the mention of the master healer he does ask "He wasn't around durin' the plague was he?...I suppose it was a very long time ago" he gets distracted as Terrence appears and he gives the sergeant a nod "Intrude away" he lets Felicity actually answer the question though as he relaxes back in his chair and grabs his drink. Another quick nod for Zolomon's appearance and he sounds less than enthusiastic about the ball "Yes, we heard...simply ecstatic about it." sarcasm!
Felicity frowns. "Plague? I don't think so. I don't remembah anythin' 'bout a plague." She turns and smiles at Terrence. "Oh, 'tis m'sketchbook. I love t'draw as a way t'relax." She becons him over as she turns the page, revealing a picture of Dominik on the beach with all the leverets. She wrinkles her nose. "Aye, th'Ball. Oh, I'm sure 'twill be fine," she aims this at the Smith. "'Twill prob'ly end up bein' fun, actually, s'long as none o'th'Recruits get it into theih 'eads t'staht a food fight, wot!"
The expression on Terrence's face morphs from a grin to dread a soon as the corporal mentions the ball. It turns to laughter, however, once Greg speaks. "First time I heard of it, and I agree with the lieutenant here - absolutely /thrilled/." Drink in paw now he makes his way over to get a better look at the drawings. "These are rathah good..." Taking an empty seat at the table the sergeant relaxes into it with an easy smile. "Dare I say you've jinxed it now, Felicity."
Zolomon smiles "I shall take Zeldove...I heard Ciocan mention the ball and asked if he was jolly well going and told him he jolly well should and then he made me do 50 push ups..."He frowns "Anyways..."Change the subject yes..."Speaking of Zeldove...me and her are engaged now!"
Gregorian grunts and mutters over his drink "They're hares. If they're throwin' food instead of eatin' it I'm disappointed in them already" he doesn't look convinced by the suggestions that it'll be fun but is saved from comment by Zolomon mentioning the badger "He can't just stay in his room if there's a party in his own mountain" it's not fair, Greg apparently doesn't have this option. He glances at the others when Zolomon mentions the engagement "Yes, I heard about it from her. Congratulations" he already knows so he's past being surprised this time.
Felicity looks at her fellow Sergeant. "Whot's tha' s'possed t'mean, laddie buck?" Pursing her lips, she leans over and murmurs, "Aye, 'is Lordship can't jus' stay in 'is room. 'E needs comradeship, too. May'ap we should talk t' 'im an' try t'convince 'im t'go." She abestnly flips to the next page of her sketchbook, which shows toads. Lots of toads. Apparently they've gotten to a few pictures she's done to try and stay sane after her captivity in the swamps. She looks up at her fellow Runner in surprise. "Wait, whot? Really? Well, congratulaitons!"
"Meaning now that you've said so recruits are bound to start flinging instead of eating." Terrence smiles wryly, but he is not beyond the shock like Greg is. At the moment the corporal announces his engagement Terrence was taking a sip of his drink - A surprised snort escapes him a moment later and ends up causing fit of coughs. "Isn't that's a bit, well.." He coughs again, collecting himself. "I suppose good fo'h you two then, Zolomon?"
Zolomon frowns "Ya ok thar sur....you should be carefull sur"He gets an ale and smiles "Yeah...but like no...wedding date or anything yet.Hmmms...who would bally well...do a ceomony though?"
Gregorian frowns a little as he sees all the toads in Felicity's sketchbook. He can only hope she's started drawing happier things since. He glances at Terrence understanding that reaction entirely and he raises his eyebrows slightly at the sergeant in agreement. Nothing said though he looks back to Zolomon "His lordship, presumably. Highest rankin' beast in the mountain seems tah make sense"
Felicity picks up her sketchbook, sensing that the conversation is no longer lending itself to art showings, at least for the moment. She turns to a page and opens her pencil box, revealing 2 very clever trays that move out to give her 3 areas to store all her art supplies. Selecting a pencil, she starts to work on a drawing of her parents embracing. "Aye, I'd say th'Badgah Lorhd'd be th'one t'do it, wot! Kinda like the Abbot'd be th'one in Redwall t'conduct weddin's."
Content with finishing his drink Terrence doesn't add anything more to the conversation, instead eying the pencil box with a raised eyebrow. "That's a rathah interesting contraption you've got there." After that comment, he falls quiet to think for a few seconds. With a deep breath, he mutters to Greg, "Srry fo'h this sah," An then his attention turns back to Felicity and the sergeant does his best to ignore the lieutenant and corporal. "Say, would you wanna get a meal o'h something sometime? As a date, I mean."
Zeldove has finally gotten at least some time off, walks in and just sits at a table to get some relaxing in if she can.She looks tried
Zolomon waves to Zeldove and frowns a bit seeing her just sort of sit off to the side "Zelly? Ya ok thar?"
Gregorian spots Zeldove and raises an eyebrow as she doesn't seem to have spotted the group but he leaves that greeting to Zolomon. The eyebrow goes ever higher as Terrence apologises to him. He's puzzled. Particularly as he seems to be apologising for asking Felicity out. He frowns in confusion but ultimately shakes his head and finishes off his drink. He's fine. They're not focusing their attention on him, he can sit and watch them all be awkward with each other without being put in the middle of it.
Felicity smiles and touches her pencil box. "Oh, thanks. I got it from a tradah in 'Alyahd. 'Tis really 'elpful f'r carryin' m'pencils." This explanation covers up her fellow Sergeant's apology, which would've hurt her feelings had she noticed it. So instead her only reaction is to be slightly flustered when she's asked out. "Oh! Oh, um...." She blushes up to her ears, even though she's smiling. "Uh, yeah, yes." She goes to rest a paw on Terrence's. "That sounds lovely."
"Ah, good." The matter settled Terrence returns the smile, doing his best to stay above being awkward. And falls into another bout of silence. He hadn't really thought past this point, but nothing has gone down the tube so he's happy for the time bing. Briefly glances at Zeldove and Zolomon, he finally notices the two but keeps his quiet.
Gregorian lets the awkward silence stretch for a moment until it starts to get uncomfortable and he raises his empty glass suddenly "Well, congratulations tah one happy couple" he points in the direction of the Zs with his ear before nodding at Felicity and Terrence "Good tah hear there could be anothah. Where yah goin' tah go? Or do yah need suggestions?" because trying to help is less uncomfortable than sitting there silently waiting for them to figure out plans themselves.
Felicity had been expecting more. Like, where he planned to take her. This much is obvious. The Smith gets a grateful glance, and she gently shoves her fellow Sergeant. "Aye, don't leave me 'angin', Terrence. Where're we goin'? Is it someplace fancy, or just a picnic in th'gahdens?" She puts her pencil away and closes the box, then her sketchbook. The she fixes her date with an expectant stare.
"Ah. If it weren't so cold a picnic would be good." Terrence mutters, feeling mild panic rise up. He /really/ hadn't put much thought into this. "Perhaps someplace in Halyard?" After a moment or so regains his calm, looking to the smith as well. "I don't know that town all that well, of course, do you happen to know of any good spots there?"
Zolomon has been quiet and seems to give up figureing out what is up with Zeldove and looks back to the others as he sips his ale
Gregorian is helping! He scratches his beard as he's asked for suggestions but luckily he actually has knowledge on the subject "Well, I might have suggested the new place those folks from Mossflowah were openin' for a try but I don't know that they've recovered from the fire yet. There's a nice cafe near the market we tended tah favour"
Felicity refrains from giving her date a LOOK, instead deciding to give him some grace. I mean, he's always been kind of awkward, especially around her. This is probably the first time he's asked anyone out, y'know? "Oh, yeah, I sometimes go theh. 'Tis nice. I like theih food. When should we go, Terrence?" Because the 'when' of the date is just as important as the 'where'.
/That/ he can answer. Terrence raises his arm still in a sling. "As soon as I get this gull-wing off! So within the week, hopefully. And the cafe sounds wonderful." Looking down at the table briefly, he adds, "Of course, we could do it soonah, but I can't make any promises how well I'll be able to use a knife and fork with one paw..."
Zolomon glaces over at them and smiles, he seems happy Felicity is happy as he stands "I need ta go check on a time to do some training with some recruits, see ya all later."
Gregorian nods approvingly and glances away as Terrence handles the when part without any assistance. He leaves that conversation to them as he nods to Zolomon leaving "Congrats again"
Felicity grins. "Sounds good. Wanna look ouh best f'r our first date, too, aftah all." She looks down at her sketchbook and strokes the red cover. "I'll needta know a few days in advance t'arrange babysittin' f'r Julia, too. Takin' 'er on a date would be so awkwahd, y'know?" She laughs, then sighs. "Wouldn't want t'take 'er t' 'Alyahd, anyway. Too dangerous."
Rubbing his bandaged shoulder Terrence says, with a rueful smile, "Indeed. To be frank I also want my paw back in case of that dangeh, because right now I feel I'd be rathah unless in a fight!"
Gregorian smiles faintly as he listens to the pair and just thinks quietly. Finally he shakes his head and hauls himself up "I'm gettin' anothah drink. Eithah of yah want anythin'?" he's not butting in to the conversation of dates more than he had to.
Felicity smiles at the Smith. "That drink th'leverets like. 'Tis tasty, an' I know they 'ave it up 'ere. Thanks, Greg." She turns back to the other buck and nods. "Aye, sounds wise t'me. Y'focus on gettin' bettah, an' then we'll go t' 'Alyahd." She hugs her sketchbook close, trying to hide her excitement out of concern she'll look like a dork.
"If you're offering, sah," Terrence says, "Some black tea with a spot of brandy." He smiles again at Felicity, dipping his head. "I will, hopefully. And hopefully everything'll go smoothly."
Gregorian nods to the pair and leaves the table for the bar to order a round of drinks. He takes his time about it of course, providing some time for them to not have a third wheel just sitting there watching them but ultimately he does return with drinks as his paperwork just isn't going to ignore itself.
Felicity laughs. "Now y've jinxed it, Terrence! Don'tcha know th'first rule o' bein' a Patrollah? Don't eveh voice wantin' somethin' t'go smoothly, or else 'twill all go wrong." She's obviously joking. She's just gotten her drink when a leveret Caretaker peeks in. "Felicity, your sistah hit heh head." "Oh, no...." the Runner stands up, stuffing sketchbook and pencils into her bag. "I'll catch y'2 latah!" The haremaid runs out, taking her drink and haversack with her, worry helping her rush down the corridors of the Mountain...
"Thanks, Greg." Terrence takes his drink, and he arches an eyebrow at Felicity. "Suppose so, but at least that way we /know/ it won't be boring." He winks, then waves her goodbye as she leaves. "Take care!"
