Submitted for your approval, some RP etiquette tips. These tips are not official to any RP-based gaming and are only opinions!  Take them or leave them.

Before I go in to this, I just wanted to say I’m not posting this for any other reason other than my opinions toward character and RP development.  The idea was not only my own but from suggestions that were given to me when I was with my local gaming group this past Friday night.  So, just so we’re clear, this came from ideas outside of the MUCK so please, no one think this is aimed at you, or that you’re the reason why I’m posting it.

Also, I’m not saying by any means that I’m a perfect RP’er.  A lot of these ideas come from my own mistakes while RP’ing.  With that in mind, I’d like to start off with the idea of '''THE ART OF FORGIVING'''.  Quit holding grudges against people and stop being angry.  It’s just a game.  People learn and grow through experience when it comes to this sort of thing, so if someone messes up or does something you don’t like, don’t hold it against them.  In a kind manner, point out what you feel they’re doing wrong.  If need be, point out some things that have been written on this website’s help forums by Otter.

Information posted on this website’s forums is usually what is referred to in most RP (not just this MUCK’s) as Pre-RP Information.  This is information that has been decided on or agreed upon before the actual RP happens (hence the name).  It can be a good guide to carry the story along, allowing you to know where a plot is about to go so you’ll know how to RP it better.  It can also bring about poor RP if you have your character somehow magically know what’s about to happen and goes off warning everyone about it without that character having actually seen anything ICly.

There is also Granted Information.  Like Pre-RP Information, these are things a player wants to get out there OOC so people will have some sort of warning before RP’ing with them.  An example would be that their character has an attitude problem.  Perhaps you’re OOCly not in the mood to RP with a character who is easily angered, and so this warning is a helpful hint to stay away from that character right now.  It’s there so you can OOCly make better judgments when RP’ing with that character.  Like Pre-Information RP, it shouldn’t be used Icly (again, your character magically knows that that character gets angry easily so they go around telling people this without having RP’ed with that character, or without being told ICly).

The information posted on this website’s forums, or shared OOCly, should be looked at as being privileged information - the people posting it or telling you about it are TRUSTING you only to use it OOCly.  Some people may not want you to know anything about their TP, PTP, character, etc. to keep even more IC.  They don’t trust you to know things OOCly because it could effect how you RP with them, or the situation, and so in order to make the RP even more realistic, they want you to go in to the RP knowing nothing about the situation so the only option you have, including OOC, is to discover things ICly.  If someone takes this option in their RP, it should be respected.

Last but not least, CONCERNING THE NEWBIE.  Everyone who truly understands martial arts understands that the white belt is eventually where want to arrive, and the greatest of fighters always were, at the beginning of their careers in fighting, novices.  Everyone on the MUCK was, at one point, new to the MUCK.  Treating people who are new to the MUCK poorly only because they’re new to the MUCK and/or RP is the worst of poor RP etiquette.  No one likes a jerk, and people who drive people who are new to the MUCK away only do a disservice to the MUCK - how can the MUCK grow if everyone who comes here interested in it are driven away?
