#201 Re: Logs » On the Road Again... Adrian and Monty, + Lossow: Adventure! » 2021-05-22 05:29:00 PM

"You didn't say the left way, yes?"

5/17/21
Sgt. Adrian and SbLt Lossow

They'd survived the blizzards. The massive storms had blown through, and blanketed the land with up to six feet of snow. Eventually, it got so bad that the group were forced to shelter ina cave for nearly an entire week. Their rations had run low, but somehow all the hares survived. Eventually, they started to press north again, still following Adrian's map, in the general direction of a little dot called "Noonvale." It looked to be the only settlement this far north, and they are in desperate need of new supplies. The weather is warming, as spring approaches, despite the cooler climes of this forest...

"Noodvale doesn't bloody exist, I'm sure of it."
The dark muttering had come from the sub-lieutenant Lossow, who'd nearly lost his ears to the cold. "Why any creature should try and build a settlement up in this most wretched place is beyond me, same with us being ordered up here! Though I suppose any hares we happen to come across will be right hardy folk, if they haven't frozen to death."

Adrian chuffs, and laughs. "Yah've nevah met th' Northern 'Ares, y' haven't. I got cousins up 'ere. This is where mah fam'ly hails from, originally." And, he suspects, his brother may be up with his cousins even now... He shakes his head, dismissing that thought. "As f'r Noonvale, it's our only bet. If I'm right about where we are now... We're just about a day an' a half t' two days away..."

"Well, I had simply thought they'd be closer to the coasts at least, like that big hare Kasimir, with the accent." Lossow shoots back. "But Noo'vale itself - well, I shan't expect much, to be rather frank. My only memory of it is in connection to the Martin myth, with very little tangible fact connected."

Adrian hrmms. "That was thousands o' seasons ago, I wagah. So it might be well 'n' truly gone, eh wot." He looks back over his shoulder, to make sure the other three hares are keeping up, before he looks to Lossow again. "Th' map I've been carryin' came from th' library at Salamandastron. Quinten gave it to me, 'imself. Tol' me nevah t' lose it, an', if possible, t' make any corrections as necessary. And it's old, mate. Tha's why it still shows that ol' Loam'edge place..."

"Well, least that seems a mercy," the junior officer shakes his head, falling in pace with the sergeant. "I thought it was the one nicked from the abbey library, and I'm more trusting of the Patrol's records myself. I'm not even going to ask what was 'Loamhedge.'"

"Ancient abbey, oldah 'n' Redwall," Adrian replies, anyway. "Least, tha's wot their Abbot tol' me... I thought it was a town. Tha' was a mess. They got an addah there, currently. Me 'n' Mont weren't able to rout them out, I'm afraid. Much t' mah annoyance... They stole an 'are from us, an'... Well, it doesn't do t' dwell on that." He sets his jaw grimly, still determined to one day go back and avenge her senseless death.

"Well, it's in the middle absolutely nowhere," Lossow replies with a light chuckle, "So you needn't worry of ever going back to that place. Sounds horrid."
He adds, after a moment: "Of course, we're currently in the middle of nowhere ourselves."

Adrian nods. "An' we'll do well t' keep our wits about us. We're nearin' a place called 'Marshank,' an' I do know some of its story... An' it ain't pretty. It tends to be a vermin 'ideout. Th' five o' could be ovahwhelmed if'n we ain't careful, wot."

Surprise flashes over the sub-lieutenant's face. "Marshank, you say? Now that is a place I've heard tell of. A squirrel who passed by the 67th told a story of being there- of course I could only understand half of what he bloody said his accent was so thick, sounded like he was speaking around marbles, really. Been used as a vermin hideout recently, leastways in the past twenty seasons or so I heard tell."

Adrian frowns. That's not what he'd hoped to hear. It's just a few days march from Noonvale, according to the map, and the news of five lone Long Patrol hares being in the area would more than likely travel fast, if the aincient fortress is currently being occupied. "Within th' past 20 seasons. Agh. If we 'ad a full garrison be'ind us I'd feel a lot bloody bettah. But just th' five... Let's 'ope there ain't an army in residence currently."

"I'm not sure how long they would've kept it going, I'd say. It's been a long damn time." Lossow replies a relaxed shrug. "Most vermin bands have a life time of a season at most! I'd be bloody well shocked if they're still in that fort."

Adrian nods, and he pauses to take a swig of water from his canteen. He peers on northward. "There should be a fork in this path somewhere along here. We need to take the right branch."

"We're following a path?" Lossow mutters to himself, "Could have fooled me." He bows his head to the sergeant. "Very good, and two days or so, if we stop for the night?"

Adrian nods. "A very old path. Believe it or not, this eventually connects up to the Great Road through Mossflower. But, up here... Seems to get little use, to judge by how overgrown it is." He pauses before a tree. There's the remains of sign in front of it. Heavily faded and decayed. "This is the fork. I think." He pulls out the map to check, slowly unrolling it. "Two days, give-or-take, Sah. Depends how overgrown the rest of the path is."

Nodding slowly, the sub-lieutenant takes a step to the right. "You didn't say the left way, yes?"

Adrian nods. "Right. I mean... We go right." He knows the sun is starting to set, so they'll be pitching a camp soon.
Lossow looks up at the sky, wondering how the sun looks that moment on the western sea. "Right it is then, and if Noonvale doesn't exist anymore, and we starve for lack of rations, we eat Monty first."

"Sah!" But of course, it is meant in jest... Or is it?

Lossow's tone is light, a clear joke; though perhaps there is some worry behind the morbid jest.

Pvt. Donica & MSgt. Terrence, hares

Donica sits on the dock, she seems worried since Velm hasn’t returned from taking the badger cub to Salamandastron. Then maybe its just her worrying too much, perhaps he had to stay there.

The gates of the fort are opened wide, yet guards heavily. Four hares stand in the passageway, barring any non-patrol members from access. The master sergeant, Terrence, is returning from a patrol of the streets and outer edge of the town of Halyard at the head of a squad of hares, seven in total including himself. As they pass by the healer, the buck halts, motioning the rest to continue onwards.

"Private Donica?" He says, approaching her, "What're you doing out here?"

Donica quuicly stands and salutes. "Sorry sur…I was hoping Lt. Velm was heading back sur, but seems he is likely not.I know they likely need officers at the mountain." She had still be mostly alert.

The sergeant dips his head, "At ease - as fo’h the good lieutenant, he's only been away two days. And considering the half-day it takes to get down there, and the half-day back, he's probably resting." Terrence offers a small smile, attempting to be comforting. "Don't you worry about him, he'll be fine where he is. It's us that need worry, if anything. If that horde attacks they have to go through us first, afteh all."

Donica nods as she relaxes. "Yes…I hope we won't have an issue but sounds like the vermin are headed this way" She sighs. "They had to pick now to cause trouble, its horrible."

"Well, this place and the mountain are the only two things of note fo'h leagues and leagues on end along the coast," The master-sergeant shrugs, looking out at sea, "So it seems very likely so. Why else would an army that size gathah? Certainly not to have a picnic. But regardless-" Terrence turns to her, "There's some work to do yet, to protect the town itself, and not just ou'h fort."

Donica nods. "Yes and if a healer is needed, I can be thar for that.I do know how to use a sling and spear well."

"I'd hope so," Terrence laughs in a grim mannor, "Best tools of ou'h trade - but I meant more labo'h work, digging and whatnot - in the time of Lady Wildstripe, seasons and seasons and seasons ago, o'h maybe it were lady Roseeyes... anyway, the point is the Patrol dug trenches in the sand to help defends the mountain, and filled them with many wooden sticks and stakes and speahs. I should like to do the same around the village itself."

Donica says, "We would need to talk to the Mayor on that, but maybe right outside the village and near the fort here."

"Perhaps," Terrence grunts, "But he shan't complain, I'd wageh. And besides, the mayo'h is not the ruleh of the beaches outside of his town- that would be the good Badgeh-lord."

Donica nods "I know, one reason said like the entry,  make it hard for the vermin to get inside. As for inside we let the mayor know of the danger, unless he already been told." She speaks. "So where am I needed to be right now sur?"

"Oh, I've assumed he's been told - but thankfully that is not my job no'h yours, truly." Terrence turns back to the fort, "That'd be the commissioned offciahs' role. As fo'h where you're needed: report to you'h corporal o'h sergeant Rosinbloom, and get you'h orders from them."

Donica nods, a salute and she is off to see where she is needed.

Before entering the fort, the master-sergeant would turn once more to look out at sea. The sun was beginning to set, the light golden reflecting off the waves; he stood and listened and watched for a moment, before entering the gates. In an hour after nightfall he would come back out, with his patrol in tow, to begin digging around the village and shoring up the defenses.

#203 Re: The Long Patrol » Danger comes to the Western Shores!!!! » 2021-05-12 12:19:44 PM

Alright! I should also clarify: regardless of what Zoltar's intending, Terrence and the LP doesn't know, especially how he might handle the fort. If there were just fighting hares inside and no village beasts they could hold out, but that's not the case. So from the sergeant's perspective, when they have to leave the base, burning the place down by his own paws is the best option as he's thinking in the long-run;
if the fort is destroyed, there won't be any good defensible places in Halyard for the vermin to use when the LP comes back in force to drive them out, and it'll save them a headache at that time.

This was RP'd last Saturday (5/8), taking place IC'ly around that time.

John & Oz, a squirrel & badger-cub

The moonless night had been dark save for the roaring fires the vermin had lit, dancing around them in a victorious revelry at the sacking of the otter holt. So engrossed were they that even the few sentries that had been placed joined in, save one, yet with the noise behind him and the blackness in front he could tell very little and his watch seemed in vain.

He certainly didn't see the cloaked figure creeping forward along the ground, keeping his head low- though the fire glinted off the tip of a loaded crossbow bolt in paw. John had been following after the massive horde for months now, staying more distant now that there was no cover of trees and foliage, hiding in the sand dunes during the day and observe the band at night. He knew the badger dibbun, who he thought was named Oz (though he couldn't quite remember), was somewhere in the camp usually kept by the wild-cat leader himself. The squirrel knew what Zoltar looked like now, and his daily habits, and how he treated the creatures below him; the badger especially.

Yet John had remained as he does now, quietly watching the enemy from the shadows, and waiting, waiting as he had done for more than a season now.

A couple vermin were chatting near by." Boss a bit grumpyy" The other nodded." De cub wandered off on someone  watch." The hmmms." I heard Jaws ate hin or..well he ate someowe that fer sure, hee hee."

Oz meanwhile was not in the camp, unknown to most he was alive and not too far from the camp, luckly no one seemed to look for him or maybe a couple was.

Moving closer, John would turn his good ear forward so as to better hear what they were murmuring to each other.  The squirrel is laying flat on his belly, crawling forward through the sand slowly.

"Ate him?" The lone sentry turns to the two conversing nearby, shocked. "Bu' tha'badger-cub were a right big 'un, 'e was."

One shrugs, " Jaws is a monitor, why de boss let jim join,  no clue"

"Bah," The sentry shudders, "Know tha' scaly thing by sight, I do- ate me mate, Kingsley, 'e did. Or tried to. 'E doesn' 'ave 'is tail no more, that's for sure."

The squirrel, now more alert, was mere yards from the conversing vermin. His crossbow was brought slightly forward, ready to be used if need be. The badger, eaten... John's face is grim. A poor end to this blasted mission, he would wager.

The other shrugged."By de way anyone seen Rockpaw?”

Oz meanwhile has gotten a little further downshore and there  is likely still some paw prints, for now.

"Last I saw 'im 'e were getting drunk wi' the bigwig master," The sentry responds with a shrug. "'E's tyin' to get up in the world, or so 'e said..."

John would slip away from the conversation then, having heard all he wanted - or so he thought. His sense failed him in the moment, beyond maybe his eyesight which had adjusted to the dark; but his smell was over-ridden by the stench of the horde, and his hearing too; any little noise was drowned out by the raging feast of war.

"Bu' the badger-" Halting, John would once more perk up to listen to the nameless sentry. "You absolutely sure 'e got eaten'? The great boss'll be knockin' some 'eads off for sure, later."

The one hmmed." Wells...Shadowlight and..Jaws went ta look fer him....and that monitor ate someone, that was fer sure."
Its very possible Rockpaw might be found....well sort of.

"What if Rockpaw were the 'un to been" the sentry struggles to speak, the thought horrific to him, “E-e-eatin’?”

A grave smile spreads across John's lips now. Perhaps there was hope - he'd have to find this Shadowlight or the monitor and ask them a few questions, maybe. But he stays still for now.

The other horde beast gulps, " Maybe...de boss is..lettin' it...like ones he dont like."

"Bad boss, I'd say," The sentry clucks his tongue, "But ya didn' 'ear that from me, got that? I'll drag ya down with me if ya snitch."

The squirrel pulls back now, moving around by light of the stars. As he circles westwards, towards the sea, he seeks the tell-tale shape of a monitor lizard framed against the firelight, though has little luck so far.

Oz is luckily not been found by the vermin and he is smart enough not to go near the camp as he shivers. Still soaked from when he fell off the log bridge by the river. His ankle hurts but he still walked some before he sat and sneezed a couple times. As for the monitor its hard to say where he is, likely the largest tent giving a report to the wildcat.

The sneeze was loud enough that the squirrel took note of it, coming from the opposite direction from the camp. Hopefully no one else heard it-

"Oi, ya 'ear something?" The sentry stands, looking in the direction of the squirrel and badger. "Coulda sworn I 'eard something out there."

John sucks in a breath, slowly, agonizingly so, retreating, crawling on his elbows and shimmying backwards. He rolls into a ditch, the sand getting everywhere, and he peaks his head out - there. He saw a dark shape cover parts of the stars, and he begins to follow it, carefully.

The two vermin listen and one just snorts.c”Probably someone in camp ya moron, or one of de scouts de boss sent out to look downshore,  see how far Halyard is."

Oz limps along a little more, he still has a lot of growing to do since he is a dibbun. He finally just sits as he is worn out from his mad dash earlier, and not to mention a horrible free swiming lesson.

"They didn' put out any scouts tonight, ninny." The sentry snarls, grabbing his spear. "Come on, it weren' from camp - Might be thicked skulled, bu' me 'earing's sharp." Waving for the others to follow, the sentry advances into the dark.

"Shhh..." John would hiss to the badger babe, "Donnae move."

Oz at first starts to run, but then sort of relaxes a little.

The one vermin shrugs,  and another just rolls his eyes and heads to a tent." Ya two check it out, I am staying ere’.”

John leaps after him, trying to tackle the badger-babe to the ground. They're nearly the same size, even though the squirrel is rather tall for his species.

"There! I swear I saw somethin' -" The sentry points, looking back at the two vermin, "And didn' ya 'ear that?"

”Quiet.” The squirrel mutters through clenched teeth, "D'ye wannae both us tae die?"

Oz frowns but stays quiet now, but he is shivering a little.

One beast scans the area and shrugs. There is a couple seagulls on a nearby rock. "Maybe it was de birds...")

John nods to the badger as the babe remains quiet, whispering, "Oz, aye? Ah'm from th'abbey." The squirrel scoots away now, back towards the camp.

The sentry stood some four yards now form the camp, his paws shaking on his spear. "I didn' know birdies could run!" He shouts over his shoulder, annoyed and scared he'd been abandoned out here.

Carefully replacing the metal-tipped bolt with one of the many makeshift bolts he'd made of wood in the crossbow, John would lay down again facing the sentry and the camp. Shoulder resting against the crossbow stock he takes aim upwards, ever so careful to not miss what he's shooting for, or so he hoped.

"Wha-" The sentry had heard a soft click, and the bolt whistling by him to make a grand arch in the air, while the squirrel held his breath for a few tense seconds. The next thing the sentry heard was a scream from inside the camp as the bolt seemingly came directly out of the sky and into the shoulder of one of the many vermin - after that, well, he didn't have time to hear he small knife driving into back of his neck, let alone see his assailant who covered the vermin's mouth with a gauntleted paw as they both sunk to the ground.

Oz holds back a whimper and stays where he is not daring to more till its ok to, the last thing he wants is back with that horde.

As the horde seems now in a state of chaos, it would be safe to assume no one would come looking for the missing sentry for some time. The beast who was struck was the Kingsley that was mentioned - right in a middle of giving a drunken ramble of a speech. No one could tell where the bolt had come from, and most vermin were too far gone to care.

"Lookie, even th' 'eaven's though 'is speech were bad! An' they shut 'im up!" There's some cruel laughter, now.

John returns to the badger after rolling the body into the ditch. "C'mon-" he whispers, grabbing at the badger's paw to lead him on, "Need tae stick tae th'shoreline w'thae waves, we do, least they'll find our tracks by mornin'."

Oz nods and obeys following him, after they are further away he finally speaks." Where we...going?"

Despite himself, and the freezing water about his feet and legs, John darkly laughs. "Far away from here, southwards, Ah can tell ye, bu' no much beyond tha'."

Oz frowns but he knows the squirrel is helping him so he is mostly relaxed, still jumpy at sounds though.

"By th'by, name's John," the squirrel mutters, trudging through the shore waves. "Some point Ah'll get ye back tae Redwall, Ah will."

Oz nods,  “Okies."

The body of the sentry would never be found by the horde, and few would mark him as missing come morning - and those that did would simply assume he ran off. The two woodlanders would travel by night only, resting and hiding during the day, until they came to the lands guarded by the Long Patrol.

#205 Re: The Long Patrol » Danger comes to the Western Shores!!!! » 2021-05-08 03:22:49 PM

Alright; I'll also add with Halyard being conquered, the base/fort the LP has been making (where Terrence has been IC'ly the past month or so) in the town could come into play; once it's clear the horde is too big to defend the town against, Terrence (or whoever is in charge) would order everyone back to the fort as there is no way they could escape back to the mountain considering the distance (like 6ish hours) and how many vermin would be attacking. From there, there are two options:
1; the fort gets besieged in a similar way to how Salamandastron will be and Terrence and anyone else with him would be trapped in the fort until Zoltar's beaten back
2: the fort is besieged for a night or so and an order comes to the LP to abandon it and somehow return to the mountain - Terrence would be vehemently against the idea as there wouldn't be any real way to make it on foot from a horde-infested-town and trying to run back to the mountain with only a few dozen hares guarding the town's refugees while trying to slip past a force of 500+ would be suicide. However as they are in a harbor and the fort is on the edge of the water, an idea/plan could be formed to capture any of the ships still at anchor there in the dead of night and use them to escape the fort and slip down the coast back to the Mountain; and with that Terrence would order all supplies meaning resources, food, personal belongings, and weapons that can't fit on the ship(s) be destroyed in the fort, as well as the fort itself to be burned down or flooded so that the horde can't use it themselves. Terrence would oversee that personally, and perhaps in the confusion of escaping the burning place Felicity could be separated and lost and forced to hide, while Terrence and the rest escape safely back to Salamandastron - and perhaps Terrence and everyone else doesn't notice Felicity is missing until after they set sail and the fire is already burning when the LP has a rollcall on deck. They couldn't return to retrieve her, as the horde would be fully alerted that something was happening that point, and she'd have to be left on her own.

I like the second option more myself, which is why I put more detail in it, but I wanted to share both possibilities tongue

#206 Re: RP Chat » Monty and Adrian's Excellent Adventure (Now With Extra Lossow!) » 2021-05-06 11:34:33 AM

Coolio. I'm generally on on Saturdays at around 1 PM MDT (Mountain Daylight Time) for a few hours, though I pop on a few times during the week to check for page mails and say hello to people

#207 Re: The Long Patrol » Danger comes to the Western Shores!!!! » 2021-05-06 11:31:24 AM

I can make most Saturdays from here on out, though few other days - I've been rather busy the past month (like a lot of people...) As Oz said, we talked awhile ago about John showing up and freeing Oz, though there is a possibility of being captured or failing. He's been trailing Zoltar & Co for months now, and isn't too keen on jumping in the middle of a horde in broad daylight.
Who knows - he might show up to give the LP and Halyard a few days warning, especially after the Holt is burned, but I'd like to keep him as a wildcard of sorts wink

Also, Log-A-Log, I assume that will mean things with Zoltar'll be pushed back until after you come back, right?

#208 Re: The Long Patrol » Misc. IC LP stuff » 2021-04-18 03:03:40 PM

So, at Zolomon's request I removed him from all IC LP listings to reflect his recent IC banishment and moved his info to the former members archive; I added temporary entries on the LP Members List for both Quinten and Adrian until they send me their stuff for the page tongue

I also wrote up a brief IC LP recruit training guide/overview a few weeks ago (heavily inspired by the historical Roman Army regiments)

Pvt. Donica and Msg Terrence

Donica was back now, though she would of liked staying longer, missing a famous Redwall feast, she punches the punching bag again. She might be a healer but every hare had to do some training in here during the week.

Having returned himself to Salamandastron from Halyard only a week ago, Terrence found himself eager to return to the work being done in the village. Yet work here needed doing, and so here he was. It had been some time since new recruits had come to the mountain, and now the weather allowed for most training outside, advanced maneuvers and practice fights. Terrence comes into the room, directing himself towards the armory; but he pauses seeing Donica. While he hadn't expected the training room to be deserted, per say, he didn't expect the healer. "Afternoon, private!"

Donica quickly stands at attention. "Hallo sur... I got back and made a report, Lt. Velm did the main report."

"Indeed, welcome back." Terrence gives a short nod. "Of course," He adds, after a moment of silence, "How was the rogue agent, let's call him? Did he offer much trouble on the way back?"

Donica shakes her head. "No trouble, didn't try to run off... well he did run off once but not very far. Course till we got to the shores we were in a log boat so little harder to rush off."

Terrence takes in the words, nodding slowly again. "I see. How did he treat the lieutenant? Come to think of it - how did he treat both, meaning Velm and Reed, of course."

Donica replies." Him and Lt. Reed had a couple arguments,  no phisical fighting happen..that I know of. He was placed in an old office till me and Velm could bring him back here." She frowns. "We sadly had to miss the Spring Feast but his Lordship had said bring the Sergent back ASAP."

"May very well be formal sergeant, now..." Terrence remarks. "As fo'h Lt. Velm and yourself - how was Zolomon's behavior towards you two? The reason I'm asking is because I'm rathah curious how he treated an officer disconnected from all that made him run and how he treated an enlisted - belligerence, defiant, the ilk... "

Donica nods. "I mostly avoided him till on way back.He complained  couple times,  muttered or was just quiet. You're likely have to ask velm for any other info."

Terrence grunts. "Right, I'll be sure to check with the Lt. Howevah, I do want to know how he addressed you." The NCO narrows his eyes, searching for something in her face. "Did he treat you as if he were still an active sergeant of the Patrol? Ordah you around and the like? When you weren't avoiding him, of course, though I can't blame you on that account."

Donica replies. "He did once say to go away and get out of his way. I...didn't but only cause the Lt. had said Zolomon needed to be between us in case he tried to rush off, it likely been unwise to let him be behind or even in front of us both.I am surprised he didn't slip off one time me and Velm both was asleep"

"His paws were bound, I presume?" Terrence sighs. "He's a strong hare, despite his foolishness - a dangerous combination as we've all seen." Shaking his head, he begins to make his way to the armory. "Not mattah - you and Velm got him back, fo'h bettah o'h fo'h worse, and you've got the patrol's thanks. Luckily you, the lieutenant, and I hope myself will no longah have to deal with him; that's the badgerlord's job now."

Donica nods. "Yes sur... as for his paws bound, not all the time. He did help with rowing on the log boat and right before we got to the mountain his paws were free... but four hares did bound them when they took him inside and Lt. Velm went to find Lord Ciocan. "

"Of course, of course." Terrence idly waves a paw. "Well, he's back regardless. I'll stop bothering you now about the trip, for I've my own things to be doing. Thanks fo'h answering the questions, Pvt. Donica." With those words he enters the armory, searching for the practice weapons.

#210 Re: The Long Patrol » The Long Patrol in Halyard - RP Plot begininng on 3/27/21! » 2021-04-04 09:11:17 PM

Alright, thanks Elmef! Admittedly seeing that guide makes me wanna try my hand at building too, but I'll hold off tongue
However, I would still like to help with the descriptions as I have a few ideas and details!

#211 Re: The Long Patrol » The Long Patrol in Halyard - RP Plot begininng on 3/27/21! » 2021-04-03 02:12:54 PM

Admittedly I merely made the map to help IC RP and hadn't actually thought about building it as I have about 0% experience with building!
I could probably learn from all the guides on the wiki but it'll take me a while to actually be able to do anything.

Also, I'm currently online RN as Terrence at the docks and will be for the next two hours or so

#212 Re: The Long Patrol » The Long Patrol in Halyard - RP Plot begininng on 3/27/21! » 2021-03-31 02:54:39 PM

So, next Saturday I''l be on staring at 7 PM GMT (3 EST, 2 PM CST, 1 PM MST) to RP at Halyard, though I'll have to go by around 5 MST at the latest.
AS for RP plans for the base, I draw up plans Terrence IC'ly made for the Harbor Master Building to transform it into a more defensible place (the harbor master building's size/scale was inspired by shipwright buildings):

Harbor-Master-s-House.png
The idea is to build a wooden palisade wall around a courtyard in a fort-inspired design wit the harbor master's building serving as one of the four walls, giving the LP protected space to sent up tents, extra buildings (such as sheds or forges) and an open space to muster hares should the LP need to organize a large group of hares in response to an emergency without fear of being interrupted.

This is admittedly just an idea, but it would a; give ideas to casual RP in the LP as they are building the walls, and b; provide a safe structure other than Sala for the LP to fall back to if needed

#213 Re: The Long Patrol » The Long Patrol in Halyard - RP Plot begininng on 3/27/21! » 2021-03-27 12:11:05 PM

Yeah, it's one of those ideas that works great in theory but only if everyone uses it- otherwise it's just more confusion to the hot mess that is TZ

As for the RP event thing, if all goes to plan it should start in about 3 hours at 8PM GMT/4 PM EST/2 PM MST

Sgt. Felicity,
Pvt. Rhonwen,
and Sgt. Terrence

Since coming back to the mountain and Elbio's promotion, Terrence had allowed himself to be lax in his duties - though arguably that was encouraged as for the first time in months he has had free time and the sergeant was taking full advantage of it (while still keeping an eye on things). So here he was, in his casual clothing, having the first 'quiet' drink he'd had this season. Other hares of his patrol were about in the room having a small party of sorts - finally being free of the tension in Halyard the privates were relaxing via playing cards and darts, though Terrence himself couldn't join in. For all the festiveness the bespectacled hare had one thorn in his side: a report of the goings on in the mountain since he'd been away, and in particularly one from the past week or so. He'd put off reading it for a few days now but there was no escaping it. With a resigned sigh he flipped the page to read the entry on Zolomon.

Rhonwen gets a drink and soon sits down.  She didn't get the update as likely most of the higher ranks did, like above Prviate. She smiled enjoying a day to relax and not worry on training drills.

Terrence spares a glance at the private, nodding his head in greeting. "Rhonwen, hello." He's reading at the bar and seems unthrilled about the report to say the least, visibly wincing when he reaches the escape. "Well, hope you've been having a relaxing day private."

Rhonwen smiles " A day off is good sur.." She tilts her head." You seem stressed sur, everything Ok? Was something done wrong in Halyard?"

A wry chuckle escapes the sergeant, though he shakes his head. "I mean, Halyard was a mess but that was fo'h reasons outside of you ‘nd the rest of the hares' control. Nah," Terrence leans pack, adjusting his glasses as he peers more closely at the paper. "This has something to do with a sergeant. Not much any of us can do about him now though. You'll probably heah about it from the othah troops when you get back on duty, I think, as I certainly won't be worrying about that until I'm required to. O'h I'll try not to, at least."

Rhonwen listens, she sips some of her drink. "Oh...ok, hope its nothing to bad and likely the Badger Lord will tend to it if it is."

Felicity is ticked off.  Oh, she knows all about the AWOL Sergeant and how he injured a Major in a fight.  She hasn't been in a good mood since she heard about it in the first place.  Not even the Healers telling her that she can go back to her full and complete duties could even cheer her up more than just a little.  The Sergeant doe enters the Rec room, grumbling about something...then stops short when she notices who's in here.  "Oh!  'Llo, didn't know you lot were back."  A smile teases at her grumpy face, and she walks over, standing beside her fellow Sergeant and nodding at the Private.  "What a nice surprise t'end a rotten week, wot!"

"Well, I probably should've mentioned being back earlieh," Terrence certainly is grinning now. "But to be frank this is the first time since being back I've stepped out of the bath o'h my bed." The report is still sitting in front of him, the page open for all to see - a black spot on his good mood. "As fo'h the rotten week yes, I was just learning about that." He glances sideways at the private. "Though, to answeh Rhonwen here, I'm rathah relieved none of us are needed to deal with this, not now."

Rhonwen smiles." We have a day off to relax, I like days off and will enjoy it. Likely won't have another one off for a week and maybe next week will be better."

Felicity cocks an eyebrow.  "Oh, aye, although I doubt next week'll be too much bettah, at least f'me.  I'm back t'm'full duties again, jus' in time f'Zolomon's great disappearin' act."  She goes to lean on the buck's chair, stuffing her paws into her pockets.  "But y'should enjoy y'day off, instead o' messin' wi' reports."  She scoops up Terrence's papers and starts to look them over.  "Can't this wait 'til tomorrow?"  She gives the other doe a look as if to say, Can you believe this guy?  They're all off-duty, it's fine in her mind, as long as they all respect each other like civilized people.

"I mean -" Terrence's voice is treading a thing line between a morbid joke and mild panic. "I can't just y'know ignore the fact ou'h majah is in the hospital fo'h more than one day  - I already 'wasted' one sleeping the mission off. But you're both right." He lets the other sergeant do whatever she wants with those papers. "It can wait. Probably. I mean, I already go the gist and I don't really need more, do I? I certainly don't want to know more, that's fo'h damn sure. And you, miss," wags a paw at Felicity, "Just gave me an excuse to put it off."

Rhonwen chuckles. She nods. "Day off and tomorrow maybe speak to the Major, well if they allow visitors healers can be a bit...moody sometimes."

Felicity promptly takes him at his word, rolls the papers into a tube, and goes to boff him on the head with it.  "Oh my wohd, y'th’wohst.  Y' 'ave t'be ohdahed t'relax oh else y'll wohk y'self int' an eahly grave, wot!"  She pulls up a chair and sits between them.  "Y'c'n an' should find out all th'juicy details tomorrow.  Ungh, an' don't get me stahted on th' 'Ealahs bein' moody," she adds in a grumble.  "I think some of 'em became 'Ealahs just so they could ordah their Superiahs 'round an' not get in trouble."

"Healahs are the othah last things I really want to deal with on a day off, to be quite honest." Terrence knows more about the moodiness of healers than he ever wanted to know, though the bonk on his head drives that away. "If I wasn't thick skulled that would've hurt. And frankly I don't really want the juicy details - but yes the whole situation isn't a fit topic fo'h off duty, and I'll put it of mind and out of sight fo'h now. I just-" Morbid curiosity might be close, but it missed the mark somewhat. Worried? Distressed? He can't find the right word. "Off put, if you will, by the past month and that particulah hare who shall remain nameless."

Rhonwen frowns but just nods." Then we speak of other things and not worry about the papers." She smiles again trying to get the mood more cheery.

"Oh, pish posh, I barely touched y'with 'em."  Felicity keeps hold of the paperwork just to make sure the buck doesn't try to do something ridiculous, like read it.  "I'm back t'm'full duties again.  An' my little sistah Julia managed t'stuff a bean up 'er nose yestahday.  Th' 'Ealahs 'ad fun pullin' that out."  She looks at the other doe.  "I recognize you, but I don't think I evah really 'eahd y'name.  I'm Felicity."

The words ’I’m glad to heah!’ die on Terrence tongue as Julia is mentioned - and the bean. "Ah. Can't imagine that was pleasant, at all, fo'h anyone involved." Taking off his spectacles to set them down on the bar he rubs his eyes. "Daresay I'd be inclined to properly introduce you two but that's not my job today!"

Rhonwen says, "Rhonwen...a private, well barely my first mission was to the docks at Halyard."

Felicity nods.  "'Tis lovely t'meet y', Rhonwen.  Got a lovely name, there.  Makes me think o' trees....rowans, especially."  She goes to poke the buck with the rolled up papers.  "Y'always welcome t'introduce me t'beasts, Terrence!  Be friendly and nighbourly-like, wot!"  She smiles.  "Oh, aye, I 'ad t' 'elp 'old Julia down.  Nobody was thrilled 'bout it."  She unrolls the papers lays them facing down on the counter so they can't be read, but also so she's not having to hold it anymore.

"Meh." The sergeant shrugs, downing his drink. "You managed it perfectly fine." Terrence is in a good mood, despite all that's happened, and there's once more a smile.

Rhonwen chuckles." I try ta avoid the infirm,  but checkups I put up with.I have spent a good part of my life in the mountain"

Felicity is smiling, too, her previous bad mood dispersed.  "I've been 'ere m'whole life, too.  'Tis 'ome.  Although if I 'ad t'live somewhere else, I'd choose Redwall Abbey.  'Tis th'nicest place in th'wohld!  'Ave eithah o' you evah been?"  She thinks Terrence hasn't, but she figures she'll ask them both for the sake of conversation.

The opinion of Redwall Terrence holds may not be the most positive, but - "No, of course I've nevah been. Its bad luck there fo'h patrol hares, anyway. Lt. Elbio'll have his work cut out fo'h hm, I think, but it'll probably be good fo'h him." He begins to stand, holding out a paw expectantly towards Felicity. "I'm not sure what you did with the papahs but I do need to read them at some point in the coming week - and I promise I won't read them until I need to."

Rhonwen shakes her head. "I never been there no. I was too young when my parents....went thar." She drinks the rest of her ale not saying much else.

Felicity looks miffed.  "I not only nevah 'ad bad luck th'entire time I was thah, but I also arrived just in time foh one o' their feasts -- the Spring one, I believe.  I'm sure Elbio'll be jus' fine."  She softens and glances at the other doe.  "I'm sorry.  I know Mossflowah 'as bad memories foh some 'ares."  She picks up the papers and holds them to her chest, eyeing him suspiciously.  "I'm not so sure.  May'ap I should keep 'em 'til tomorrow an' give 'em t'y'at fihst light."  And she is only partly joking.

Rhonwen quietly excuses herself and leaves, she looks back at them and then heads on out to get some more rest.

"Fine! Keep them!" Tossing his paws up, Terrence starts for the door himself, saying over his shoulder, "but I'll send the clerk aftah you when they ask me where they went!" He gives an evil little chuckle, though adds, just as he stands on the threshold of the room, "I think I'm m off fo'h anothah bath anyway, so they can't bothah me there. I'll be seeing you, and Felicity-" He fully turns around, the joking manor dropped, "I don't know how to say I'm glad to see you back on you'h paws again." He's still in a rather public room surrounded by privates, but he hopes she gets how he feels. "Be seeing you then!"

Felicity waves at Rhonwen as she leaves.  Turning to Terrence, she tries to pretend to be offended, but it doesn't really work very well.  She stands and follows him to the door.  "Well, I'll jus' tell 'em y'were disobeying ordahs an' not restin' when y'd been told to!"  But as his joking manner drops, she comes to understand what he means, and she blushes slightly.  Waving, the Runner smiles.  "Aye, catch y'latah, wot!"  She then goes off to try and find her sister.

Long Patrol Members, read on! big_smile
After chatting with Elmef/Quinten in game about what to do next after the LP finished fixing up the docks in Halyard (detailed in this thread), we decided to follow up with ideas Elmef/Quinten had for the docks - with the first RP next Saturday (the 27th of March after 8 pm GMT/4 pm EST).
What will the LP be doing, you might ask?

Why, officially establishing ourselves in Halyard!

How? Well, after the docks in Halyard have been repaired and after a week or so of resting/recovering from the drama and more importantly the hard work at the docks, the hares of the LP will return to Halyard to establish a permanent barracks from which to properly patrol and guard the village! Meaning: the LP will have a base to stay at in Halyard (probably the Harbor Master's house)
Quinten will be spearheading the first RP on the 27th to get things moving up there, and I'll be the following Saturday (the 3rd of April, once again after 8 pm GMT/2 pm EST) to help keep things moving (with hopefully Quinten again)
After that, we'll have more RPs planned!

Meanwhile, in the time between the planned RPs feel free to RP at Halyard once your character is there - have them go on patrol, have them be put on guard duty, have them try to sneak extra rations from the storage- have fun and be creative! (I'll be on to RP during the week too)

Now, everyone in the LP is welcome to show up (and frankly encouraged to, please XD)

All of this also has a wider meaning for the Long Patrol - after the initial RP, a patrol of hares will be sent to Halyard every week to 2 weeks or so to replace the previous patrol there. That way, LP players (particularly privates and NCOs) have something to do other than training while also not being trapped in Halyard forever! Officers of the main regiment (so like Varus and Greg and Velm once he gets back) should feel free to move between the mountain and Halyard as they see fit, and they and the sergeants should feel free to order hares around and lead patrols around Halyard's streets and stuff.
Privates and corporals and sergeants should feel free to spend a week or two at Halyard and then a week or two at Salamandastron if they so wish; basically a cycle of on duty/off duty for the LP!

So, after talking to Benar/Quinten/Elmef in game, there's more to planned for the Halyard docks starting next Saturday!
In the meantime feel free to have hares back at Sala if they're at the docks- I'll be making a full thread today as soon as I type it up

#218 Re: The Long Patrol » Resuming Post Storm Stuff » 2021-03-20 03:41:28 PM

So now with Elbio and Donica gone from the docks (and the western shore), what should we do now?
Like, should Terrence and the rest of the hares return to Sala or stay a bit longer in Halyard?

#219 Re: The Long Patrol » Misc. IC LP stuff » 2021-03-18 06:37:07 PM

Updated Elbio to Lt today + added Rhownen (a new private) to the pages earlier this week.
Created two new pages for the LP here: https://www.rwmuck.org/wiki/Battalion_Composition
and here: https://www.rwmuck.org/wiki/Long_Patrol_Order_of_Battle
I figured out how to add images (ie ten second search for the Wikipedia help article and copying/pasting code + clicking upload on the main site) and added images to the LP Uniforms, Equipment, and Formation wiki pages.

#220 Re: The Long Patrol » Current LP Members Thread » 2021-03-15 02:44:37 PM

Regarding Zolomon completely leaving the LP: While the IC dynamic and potential for IC drama and RP is immense, and honestly a plot line I'd love to follow up on, the IC consequences for Zolomon would also be immense - we're no longer just talking AWOL, it would be full blown desertion of a non-commissioned officer. Historically, the punishment of desertion has always been pretty much death, especially in the medieval period.
As the LP doesn't do executions because honestly military executions are WAAAAY too intense and dark a subject and are NEVER fun nor really a fit subject for RP, plus IC the LP tries to be pretty chill, there has to be a different punishment, but still severe enough for the crime.
Banishment could work, as a sort of self-banishment, but I'd take it a step further: the LP would make it clear to anyone they are in contact (for instance Redwall) that a deserter from the Long Patrol should not be welcomed and sheltered in any place that expects the Long Patrol's friendship, and that any Long Patrol hare who encounters a deserter has two options: A, arrest the deserter and return them to Salamandastron to face whatever punishment the Badger Lord meets out (like formal banishment), or B, make sure the deserter is a banished outcast in any place the LP has a presence in.

The latter can apply to part of Elbio's IC role at Redwall; he's there to enforce Zolomon's banishment from any place the LP watches over, including Redwall.
Also, if Zolomon rejoins the Mossflower Defenders, then the LP will refuse to work with the MD until Zolomon is either returned to the LP or cast out by the MD

All of this provides a heck of a lot of material for RP and IC drama, which is why I like the idea XD

ALSO!
With all of this there should also be an understanding that Zolomon can never rejoin the LP

HARECICLES, or Hare's Going in Circles?

3/13/21
Like the above, sometime last year in the winter

Sgt. Adrian, SbLt. Lossow, and Cpl. Monty

CRISIS ADVERTED!
They'd survived for three days beneath that tree, huddled like wet rats around the weak fire; but they had fire, and they had food, and they had shelter.
They lived.
And now the storm had past, causing the terrain around them to be transformed into fields of endless snow under a clear blue sky. It was still bitterly cold but they could see. Rising from the furthest marches of the horizon, far to the right, the distant tall shapes of mountains could just be made out - and giving the hares a landmark to work with.

Adrian crawls out that hole, and he stretches. "Well, mate... We c'n see th' bloody mountains this time." He pulls the map out, and then compares. "Okay, that should be north... This pass I pointed out three days ago is more 'n' likely snowed in now. We should try headin' more towahd tha' city, there, an' circle 'round th' mountain base. If we can. Tha' may be snowed in, too, but we can't wait 'ere for th' bloomin' snow t' melt... Tha' could take months."

Monty just seems generally exhausted and worn out, and upon finally being able to leave the spot where they'd been holed up, the smaller hare peers into the distance and stares at the sight of the mountains in the distance. He leans against a tree, giving a light sigh, and he nods to the other two. "Yeah, sounds like a plan..." he responds. "Am more n'happy to be anywhere other n'that blasted hole in the ground." He rubs his paws together lightly, gaze averted as the others decide what to do.

"Noonvale o'h the port?" Even peering at the map as he was now Lossow can't quite place where they are. They'd traveled further than he'd thought, that's for certain. "If you mean Collin-what's-its-name, I believe we past that road some time ago. It's closer to the River Moss, least as far as I can tell."
Monty's exhaustion is shared by the sub-lieutenant, but the sheer joy of being free is giving Walter enough fuel to push on. "It's too damn bad there's nothing between here and those towns. What I'd give for a warm bed."
"I suppose we should get moving again, eh?" It was the first time Lossow had fully stepped outside the hole they'd been trapped in and he was giddy to be out. "It's a nice day considering..."

Adrian frowns slightly. "Unfortunately, we may 'ave t' backtrack a bit. It's obvious th' road forwahd is impassable. We can't possibly move northwahd this way... If this even is *still* th' road..." He points to the map. "We should 'ead East, towahd tha' coast." He frowns. It's obvious the hares are surrounded by a dense, snowy forest, but the map doesn't show with any clarity how far across the forest is. "It's unavoidable, Waltah," he says, dropping formality. "We'll 'ave t' abandon th' road somewhere around 'ere, an' cut through these woods. There should be anothah road...thataway." He points in a generally easterly direction.

Monty hmmms. "Eh, still. Not like it's the worst thing we've had t'do on this trip so far..." He nods, a look flickering within his eyes for a moment, before he sighs. "Feels like we've been out here for at least ten seasons now, eh?" He chuckles dryly. "Well, if we're gonna be off, we might as well get a move on while we can. With our luck another bloomin' storm'll start up an' we'll end up as harecicles."

The sub-lieutenant seems unconvinced by Adrian's words. "Shouldn't this road continue north until coming upon a river? Noonvale is up there, and I believed that was were we were intended to go, no?" The question seems genuine as Lossow has little knowledge of the northern lands - and what he does know are from maps that were outdated even in his grandfather's time. "And what beyond Collinsol, Collin-sol? No matter, what beyond that port is on the east shore?"

Adrian looks at the map, then looks up, and toward the north. Along what he assumes to be the road, but which is so buried in snow, it's become impossible to tell. "No, yahr right, wot. Noonvale *should* be that way, but it's hahd t' tell if we're even on th' Road anymore. There's snow at least 10 feet deep ahead o' us. But if we 'ead easterly towahd th' ocean, there should be less snow th' closah we get t' th' coast. That'll be easiah goin' for us. There's a smallish mountain range there, and I think it's th' one we're lookin' at right now. We c'n skirt th' south flank or th' north flank."

Monty nods. "At this point, takin' the easier route seems like the smart thing to do. We don't hafta prove anythin' to anyone anymore, wot."

Lossow studies the map further. "There should be a forest in the mountain direction too, though I can't make- Hang on, just a moment." The hare drops to his knees, looking for his pack. "Ah-ha!" He found it, digging through his things. A small brass spyglass, never really used, is in his paws. "As soon as we spot the forest that could give us a good idea of where we are, especially if we take the sun into account. What time would you say it is, few hours past dawn, yes?" One eye is shut, the other looking into the distance. "There's a slight rise but I can't tell if it's trees. Anyway, I think if we continue north, or as near to north as we can, we should be careful to keep those mountains on our right. I'm certain we can find the road again as we didn't stray far from it with this tree. And if we keep heading north - we can hit the river up there, hopefully. All this instead of taking the long way around and making poor Monty here feel like it's been twenty seasons out here."

Adrian squints, and shields his eyes with his right paw, and he can make out the rise. The sub-LT makes some good points, he can't disagree. "If the snow is 'ard-packed, there ought not be an issue, then. If this map is right there's no bridge across that other rivah, but we'll cross that when we get to it... Lessee... Will we need snow shoes?"

"Snow shoe-" Lossow's baffled. "Ah, yes, of course, sergeant. Carry on, and we'll head north. I hear the sea-side is terrible in the wintertime, anyway."

Adrian nods over at the younger hare. "Yes. So we don't sink inta th' snow. Read about 'em in books back 'ome..." The work takes about half an hour, but soon there's a pair for all five hares, and they can start traipsing through that snow. "Mah fam'ly came from th' North, long ago, y' know tha'? Still got some cousins up there... Maybe we'll meet 'em, eh?"

Ens. Elbio & Sgt. Terrence

Elbio has kept busy and since a certain hare was gone now others seemed to help more now and things were more relaxed, well mostly relaxed.

The work in Halyard was nearly reaching completion. The basic structure of the docks had been rebuilt for some time and now the hares were focused on tidying up the area; ropes, posts, even some of the fishing boats are being repaired. In all of this Terrence is wandering through still in shock at the removal of the other sergeant. He's not going to complain though - the work has been easier since Zolomon left.

Elbio nods as Terrence nears. "Hallo Sergeant,  doing well today I hope." He was there, he witnessed it and just remained quiet through it.It was a bit of a surprise what happen  but hey saved the Ensign the job of finding someone willing to escort Zolomon to the mountain.

"Of course sah." Terrence stands at attention. "I'll be bettah when we're done here though. It's been too damn long and too damn cold here."

Elbio nods ." Yes it has been cold but least the weather is slowly warming up, well a tiny bit anyways. I wonder who his Lordship will want to stay around here or perhaps just take turns patroling the town,  think we are to do that anyways.I mean it does need it some."

"Just patrolling the blasted place nevah's worked." The sergeant, relaxed now, waves vaguely towards the main village. "The place is infested with al sorts of unsavory characters and I don't think the patrol's evah been good and keeping it controlled if it were." Terrence rubs his chest, reflecting back on the amount of times he's been in a tight situation in the many alleyways and side streets. "At least I wasn't stabbed this time, which is an improvement I suppose."

Elbio frowns, "You were stabbed on a...mission once?" He looks towards the Dock Master's little shack." I am thinking at least some hares may stay.I do agree the tavern is a bit....well, rough to be in."

"Yes. Was trying to deal with some issues Zolomon's had ex sparked" Terrence doesn't really elaborate beyond that. "The whole town is bloody roughened has been fo'h seasons. I just wish command fully realized that - and it's too fa'h away from the mount to properly control. A lot can happen in a single hou'h, not to mention the five o'h it takes to get up here."

Elbio nods. "Well let's hope nothing major happens, it is a sea port but maybe  vermin known better or fear the mountain, a lot do from stories."

Terrence gives the ensign a long look. "The slavers last summah resupplied here and were helped by many a beast. The Patrol's done little in recent seasons to inspire feah in vermin, especially here. A few patrols a week can't do much even in a well kept place, but here?"

Elbio frowns at this news. "Maybe it will...change? I know not all of them hate us, some are glad the docks are almost repaired.  I know...one helped me carry Zolomon back from the tavern, some just seem to...guess leave us alone and others not sure of. Luckily not seen...Brutus was it?"

"Brutus you say?" The name was familiar to Terrence if only in passing from other hares. "I daresay a single creature like that isn't much of a threat - no, what I'm worried about is the mob if it were. A single enemy can easily be dispatched by a single hare, o'h even two o'h three if the hare's well trained. But a crowd of thirty? Even a squad of hares would have trouble."

Elbio says, "Brutus is the stoat Sergeant Zolomon angered. He has a couple rats think, not seen him for few days."

Nodding, Terrence responds, "Ah, so that's where I heard the name." With a shrug of his shoulders the sergeant looks back to the still working hares to observe their work from afar. "Frankly I'm still not worries 'bout a single stoat and a gaggle of rats. If they were a crew of ten o'h more, then I'd be worried."

Elbio nods." Then I won't worry either, we have guards posted if needed and not trigger happy guards."

"None of the hares are," Terrence is grave as he says it, "I can guarantee that. They'll do thei'h duty as they're supposed to, and do it well."

Elbio says, "So far everyone has done well, just Zolomon was an issue...and a private that somehow put a nail in their paw...they had to go back home early."

"And Pvt. Attenborough's sprained ankle at the beginning." Terrence adds with a shrug, leaning on a post. "They're not trained carpenters o'h craftsbeasts at all, and are doing the best they can I think. Zolomon, on the othah paw..." The sergeant shakes his head, suppressing a scowl. "He did not act as a sergeant, no'h was he seemingly interested in doing so."

Elbio says, "Well he is at the mountain now. I have no clue...plans, didn't ask as his Lordship was...well." Grumpy might describe it but the hare isn't sure."

"So he is." Terrence has had his doubt about Zolomon's rank for seasons, but he's not about to voice that now. "Grumpy is a soft word fo'h insubordination."

Elbio shrugs. "As said I didnt interrupt  the...well chat, if call it that. " He clears his throat." Anyway I will likely see how the other Sergeant is when I head back to the mountain.

"Zolomon, o'h Sergeant Rosinbloom, sah?" Terrence is cautious in how he speaks of the latter on duty and in front of an officer, and is all formality. "If you meant the formah I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't a sergeant when we get back, but perhaps that's harsh to say myself."

Elbio shrugs." Thats up to Lord Ciocan about Zolomon. " He starts to ask who and OHs.." As for her..I Don't know, sorry. Likely busy since some are here but most are returning to the mountain soon, think a small few may stay...not sure really."

"She's doing fine, of course." Moving on from the topic of Felicity, Terrence returns to Zolomon. "If I may say something of my own observances about the sergeant that perhaps might be a bit too informal, o'h whatnot, Sah..." He waits for the answer.

Elbio gives his attention." Wot would that be?"

"Zolomon was a private in my unit when I was a corporal," Terrence begins, slowly. "And latah on was promoted to corporal when I was promoted to sergeant - and then, well, he became sergeant seemingly out of nowhere, o'h well, just when he'd gotten the hang of being a corporal. He's always been one to bend the rules, slightly, but I was able to keep that in check fo'h some time. Not so these past seasons, and the dynamic has been...." He searches for the right word, "...Difficult, to say the least."

Elbio says, "So likely wasnt ready for the position yet."

"Not at all, and I think it was poo'h judgment by command." With a sigh, Terrence continues. "As his sergeant I was nevah asked how he was doing, no'h do I think ou'h lieutenant was asked his opinion on the mattah eithah. It feels like sometimes- "Agin, the sergeant is being careful with the words he says, "Officiahs and well, the... " He trails off, shaking his head,  "Beyond the majah it seems command holds little respect fo'h the hares undah them and make ill-informed decisions if it were." He falls quiet for a moment, then looks up a flash of panic on his face. "Forgive me- I think I said to much."

Elbio thinks. "Maybe Sargeant Zolomon was..ready at the time, then he changed after a rather bad event.MAybe he can get  better but who knows.  If he does it will take time and likely time to repair any friends he has or..had, like get respect back."

"Hmm, well, if you'd ask me at the time I'd have said no myself." Shaking his head to clear Terrence sounds a bit resigned. "But perhaps that's why I wasn't asked. I don't rightly know. As fo'h Zolomon - we've had tension fo'h seasons and I don't think he evah liked my command, and I doubt know we'll evah be friends." ever again the sergeant adds regretfully in his head. "I wouldn't want a hare like that commanding my hares, of course, no'h would I wan't a hare acting like him in charge of me."

Elbio says, "True...a hare needs to show respect, they need to follow rules and not stir up trouble.I do know he is off active duty for...8 weeks think.""
"Rathah lenient," Terrence can't hide the venom in his voice. "But of course he's one of the Lord's favorites. Oh well, it's not my place to criticize."

Elbio shrugs. " He seemed fairly ticked off at Zolomon when he came to check up on how things were  going."

"Considering that Zolomon was acting shamefully and dragging of the Patrol down with him, no wonder the good badger lord was, to put it lightly, peeved." Allowing himself a chuckle Terrence goes on, "As fo'h that surprise inspection - well. I still think it would have been a good lesson fo'h the sergeant to be brought back to the mountain in the custody of the hares he failed, not as a leveret ordered by an angry father."

Elbio says, "So wot do you think will happen to him or maybe has. He is still in patrol I know.,""

Terrence gives a wry smile. "What I think is a fa'h shot off from what I think should be done. What will happen is a slap on the paw, I think, and nothing more. But perhaps I've underestimated the big-wigs. Why I think needs to be done is Zolomon being stripped of his rank and foreve'h removed from the active service, moved to the Homeguard's cooks o'h something. O'h have him go through basic training with the recruits again. It's not so much fo'h his sake as the sake of the rest of us - if the punishment fo'h what he as a sergeant did isn't extremely severe, what's to stop a recruit from believing they can get away with something similah, o'h how can they trust the hares in charge of them?"

Elbio says, "Maybe not...home guard, he has skills. Maybe...demote him? I could bring it up as an idea."

The sergeant snorts. "Skill you say - he's good with a bow, I'll give you that, but it took seasons and some hard times to try and knock the arrogance out of him, and now I don't think he evah learned truly. There's more to being a good patrollah than just skills - you need discipline and cooperation fo'h skills to mean anything and that's the one thing I try and get my hares to learn."

Elbio says, "I think you do a good job, but if he was demoted you could...well." He shrugs.. "I am unsure"

"Oh Bludstripe," Terrence seems horrified by the implication, "I would nevah want to be in charge of him - there's too much history there. Howevah he'd probably do fine undah someone else. I should be cleah, sah -" Terrence stands upright, looking Elbio in the eye, "I mean no harm to Zolomon, and none of my angeh towards him is personal, beyond a disappointment - no, I'm angry with sergeant Anderson because he put all the hares here at risk every time tired starting a fight with the locals, not to mention I was not the only hare he's raised a fist to - even if he's not hit anyone but me. And frankly my duty is to my - ou'h - hares, the privates and corporals undah my command. We're supposed to protect them and keep them from needless harm, and frankly Zolomon was needless in the way he acted."

Elbio tilts his head at Bludstrip and hmmms. " I am unsure what his Lordship plans for Zolomon, if anything else. guess we will find out later on"

"Certainly." Terrence agrees, "And thankfully it's not ou'h place to make that decision anymore. It's out of ou'h paws fo'h good o'h ill, though looking 'round here I'm inclined to say it was good."

Elbio nods. "Maybe staying out of duty will wise the sergeant Zolomon up, who knows. I thg jnk demoted a rank be good for him."

"Perhaps," Terrence nods, slowly, "But personally I would be cautious to trust him with any sort of command fo'h some time - but of course I'm not in charge of that and hopefully I nevah will. Oh well, it's all speculation. I can't say what command o'h the Badger Lord'll do fo'h certain, as they've proved me wrong in the past. They're hard to predict, that lot."

Elbio says, "Yeah lets not worry on it, but the patrol does need hares. We are still a bit few but gaining slowly and I think will be a force to scare  vermin again...not that we don't some now, slavers were defeated after all."

Pointedly looking out towards all the hares working, Terrence responds quietly, "Scare, you say? The hares'll do bettah than that. Unless we come across a foe armed and armored as professionals I am confident we will give any vermin band the path to Hellsgates. There's not many recruits in the Patrol now, only fighting hares, and there's enough of them to give a hard time to any creature who thinks they can go paw to paw with the Long Patrol."

Elbio smiles. "That's good to know, and recruits are always good to, they one day will add to fighters, runners, even healers."

Terrence merely grunts in response at first. "Spent there bettah part of the past six seasons training the hares at the mountain myself. They know what they're about, I'd wageh that. We do need recruits..."

Elbio says, "Perhaps  Sargent Adrian or Corporal Monty will get some new recruits brought back. But things have been, fairly calm..nothing that is out of place for Halyard anyways..a food sign I think."

"Adrian - forgot he was promoted." Terrence thinks back to the one or two times they had met. "Only evah knew him in passing - know Monty from reputation, though. Hopefully they'll send a more steady stream of recruits back to us, because we need it."

Elbio nods, "I should get back to checking on things. We can talk later."

"Of course sah," Terrence salutes. "I have business to attend to myself, if you would excuse me."

HEADING NORTH DURING THE WORST WINTER IN LIVING MEMORY!

What could possibly go wrong, eh?

3/12/21
IC'ly, like the log above, this scene takes place some time ago, this time during the first winter storm of this past winter - sometime during last November, I believe.
Sgt. Adrian and SbLt. Lossow

Of course they had to head north while the worst winter in recent memory settled in. Of course they had little in the ways of proper protection against the cold. Of course there's not been a blooming village for weeks.

Contemplating his will as his breath comes out, SbLt Lossow rubs his paws together as he wraps his cloak round him tighter. While he was still marching forward it was out of an effort to find shelter - not because of any sense of drive or mission but because he had stopped feeling the tips of his ears a half hour ago!

Adrian, conversely, seems to be handling the weather better than Lossow. He'd asked Monty to go on ahead to scout the path forward, and passed his cloak to Serena to keep her warm, but the hare seemed to be doing just fine with the cold. Must some of that northern hare in his blood. He'd been told stories as a young leveret of his distant cousins that still lived up north, and one of his distant ancestors had been chief of a hare tribe in the snowy wilds. "Ah, feel that brisk air, mates." Yerna gives him a side eye and scoffs. "Pah."

"Can't believe there's some hares who are excited for this bloody stuff." Lossow shakes his head, freeing his snout of a small pile of white. The weather has been getting worse and worse as they headed north, and today (if it really was day anymore - the dull lighting has been universal and unchanging for hours on end) seems to be the worst of all. "Sergeant!" Shouting over the rising gale to be barely heard the sub-lieutenant turns back to were he assumes Adrian is. "Try looking to the left of us while I'll try looking to the right - don't go to far and try having the hares in between of us within sight of each other!"

Despite not minding the cold as much, Adrian had to agree that the darkening skies were a sign of ill omen, along with the increasing winds and snow. A right regular blizzard, it looked like, though Adrian had no frame of reference for what *those* should look like. Ears perking, he hears the sblt's words, and cupping his paws around his muzzle, he calls back, "Aye!" Moving to the left, toward a dark shape he recognizes as a tree trunk, he looks back. "Serena, Yerna... Keep in a line. Careful... Don't trip." He comes to the shape, and rests his paw upon it. Yep, just a tree.

IT'S SOMETHING! Lossow, on the other paw, finds nothing but a seemingly endless void of white and cold. "If I recall the maps correctly," he calls out, back towards the other hares, "I believe we've left Mossflower behind some days ago for the fields - there's mountain range somewhere up here, but I'll be damned if I could see it!"

Adrian would pull out his map, but he doubts it would prove very helpful. "We should head north-easterly," he answers, over the din. "There's anothah forest off tha' way... An' a bloomin' village called Noonvale, if th' map is to be believed! But tha's most likely still a week or more from our current position..." He stop, trying to think, as he guides the two does over toward the lee of the tree. "I think there's anothah bloomin' sea tha' way, too."

"Wait-" Lossow blinks snow out of his eyes, confused. "Isn't that beyond the mountain range?" Bloody hell he should have been more careful to study up on those maps. "Noonvale? Isn't that place a part of the Martin myth the Abbey Beasts tell of? Regardless," He draws his cloak about him tighter, "It'd be great to find any settlement named Noonvale or not. I know there's a great city to the east, but I don't know if they're friendly to woodlanders, or the Patrol."

Adrian is admittedly not the most familiar with the Martin legend. Noonvale did ring a faint bell, though. The mention of a city much closer draws his attention, though. "Aye, yahr right," he says. "We can't possibly cross th' mountains in this weather, but we c'n try t' skirt th' base..." At this point, he rummages in his pack, and extracts the map, so he can look. He doesn't have any flat surface to set it upon. Sure enough, there *is* some kind of settlement roughly directly to the east. "Colinsel... Or wotevah. We might 'ave t' try it, Sah. At least... Tha's mah suggestion. We c'n skirt th' mountain base 'ere, or we c'n try f'r a pass there, but it's more 'n' likely snowed in. This'll take us at least three t' four days off our original track."

"Perhaps we should stick to the road-" Or what we think is the road, Lossow adds privately, "-Until the weathah clears! It wouldn't do to get lost in the wilderness in winter, I say!"

Adrian looks up at the angry sky. "Normally I'd agree," he says, "If we're gonna try tha', though, we're gonna need t' find some sorta sheltah here soon. I mean, th' cold ain't botherin' me too much, yet, but I c'n tell th' temperature is steadily droppin'. We need t' find a cave or cabin, or some such. We may 'ave t' hunkah down 'n' ride out th' worst o' th' storm... An' tha's wot I think this is, a storm."

"Well right now I'm thinking of a place to hide from the storm!" Lossow shouts back, stumbling forward. "When did that blasted ditch go away, anyway? I coulda sworn there was one north of the bridge. Though!" He stops suddenly as the idea occurs to him. "Halt! That tree you saw! With all the snow falling we can try and dig a burrow in it, and use the tents as the inside layer maybe?" It seems crazy to the junior officer but he's desperate. "My tail's gonna fall off soon, that's for certain."

Adrian cups his paws around his muzzle again, and calls out, "Montyyy, oy! Come back toward mah voice!" He knows the other buck hasn't gone that far ahead, sohe should be back with them shortly. In the meantime, he looks back at the tree, and nods. "I feel like th' road on this side o' th' bridge is less maintained than th' southahn portion, wot." He rummages into his pack again. "Diggin' a burrow sounds like a good plan right now. Serena, Yerna, we'll need 'elp."

The sub lieutenant turns waving the rest to follow. "Very good sergeant, and I can't imagine the last beasts to use this road - I don't even think there's been record of travel up here since before Lord Sebastian's reign!" Lossow squints, searching the cold dark for the tree. "Luckily I know a thing about shelters in snow! It wasn't all book learning in the 67th!"

"Unfortunately, we're unlikely t' meet any othah travelahs because o' that," Adrian remarks, as he starts digging out a small den in the snow on the leeward side of the tree, the most protected side from the blowing snow. "Mont, staht settin' up th' tent, wot. We'll try to get it inta this 'ollow 'ere, wot. Oy, I thought t'was bad when we was down near tha' Loam'edge place..."

"Isn't the south a desert?" Lossow has admittedly never heard of Loamhegde, or paid very much attention to the lands beyond Southsward (and even then he could only say there's a castle down there and little else). "Let's try to pack the snow thickly, and make sure the base around the tent's firm - if I remember, the snow should act as an insulator if you will, like a blanket. Has something to do with melting and freezing and all that." Kneeling down he's already set to work alongside the sergeant. "Hopefully the storm'll pass in a day at most, but if not..."

"If not, we need t' make sure 'ypothermia doesn't set in," the Sergeant replies. He's read about Hypothermia in books back at the Library in Salamandastron, but he's never witnessed it first paw...and doesn't want to now. "And yes, big bloody desert. It was bloody well 'ot, too. Not too much fun... But I think a blizzahd in th' north is probably a bit more problematic. I guess we'll see." He joins Lossow in packing the snow hard, and Yerna does, as well, working wordlessly. Serena and Monty working on the tent. All working quickly before the worst of the storm arrives.

Walter Lossow works on in grim silence, taking what Adrian said to heart. After sometime, though he stands, stumbling as he exposes himself to the wind but soon regains his footing. "Wood! I don't suppose we have anything dry enough, but perhaps trying for a small fire in the area we've dug out could help the cold? Can't use the tree - it'd be too wet I think. Less you lot don't mind smoke."

Adrian looks up from his work. "We'll need a vent, if there's smoke," he says, "Or we'll suffocate." He takes a look over the tent, now being set up in the dug out hollow. "Ah, Serena, let's try t' find some wood... But don't stray too fah." He looks to Lossow. "I'll see wot we c'n find."

"Very good, sergeant Adrian!" Lososw looks up at the branches, and at the snow wall around him. "Perhaps we can build a wall around the fire, dig out some more. The branches seem to keep most of the snow off, and I'm more worried about the wind in terms of keeping the fire going. If we can block the wind we might fine keeping the fire outside the tent..." Kneeling back down, the officer starts clearing a place. "Obviously we'll need a hare to keep watch at all times, and I suppose I'll have to go first."

Adrian nods his head. "Sah," he replies, then moves off in tight circle of the immediate area around the base of the tree with Serena, picking up as many branches and sticks as they can find. "I'll volunteeah f'r second watch," he replies, still being in earshot of the officer. He won't head out further than that. Too unsafe. "'Opefully we won't be stuck 'ere a week."

"A week? Oh Sebastian." The use of the old badger lord's name as en expletive was a slip up on the part of Lossow, "Well sergeant let's bloody pray we're not stuck here for a week." He has a flint and steel for his belt now, ready to try and start a fire. "Any of you don't happen to have any scrape paper tucked dryly away in your pack, now do you?"

Adrian brings over an armful of sticks and branches, and sets them down for the sub-lieutenant. He let's the expletive pass... The sergeant's been working on keeping a professional with his younger superior, and decides it's not his place to bring it up. "Well, sah, let's 'ope. If worse comes t' worse, we still got plenty o' food, an' we c'n melt snow f'r watah." He feels in his pockets, and pulls out a few scraps and slips. "These should do for kindlin'..."

The junior officer takes the scraps gratefully. "Thank you, sergeant. To be quite honest I wasn't expecting anything, considering how soaked we all are, but I'm not going to complain about good fortune while we're buried to our ears in bad snow, eh?" With the means to make a fire there, Lossow sets to work. It takes some time, far longer than starting a fire in good conditions (for obvious reasons), but he does manage a small kindling. "Better than nothing, I suppose, but I'll keep it going."

Adrian nods, and with the tent up, and the fire going, he gets out their sleeping rolls, and gets the does inside. Before they fully settle down, he stops by the fire, to speak more freely with Lossow. "Well, Sah, if I might say so... We're gettin' along bettah now, eh wot? I'll admit it rankled me t' get a youngah superiah officah t' have t' say 'Yes Sah,' and 'No Sah,' to, but Yahr good stuff, Mate. An' if we live through this bloody blizzahd, I'll uncork this bottle o' Octobah Ale I knicked from Redwall back there, an' we'll share a drink, wot."

Lossow blinks, unsure of how to take the sergeants words. "I suppose that well and good, Sergeant Adrian, but if I may - you know the pain many grizzled sergeants and even privates suffer, like old serg- well, lieutenant Greg now? It's been seasons since I was there at the mountain." He's jesting though points to the bottle and says in a mock-serious tone. "Daresay I'll hold you to that, sergeant!"

honestly i  don't really want Terrence to be a lieutenant as I'd kinda be playing two LP hares of roughly the same rank, and personally I think Terrence makes a better NCO/sergeant than commissioned officer tongue
The master sergeant rank is probably the best one for him (and the LP) as it would allow him IC'ly oversee things such as every enlisted hare's training, overseeing how supplies are given out, overseeing equipment, and having the explicit job of telling the major, captains, and colonels the needs and state of the enlisted hares in addition to the regular sergeant duties and giving input on battalion plans and stuff!
As a fun fact, Bann in High Rhulain is the only master sergeant in the books

Hey! I'm on right now and can be on for a while, and I'll be on in an hour or so - I also sent a PM saying Thursdays as a general rule for me are hard to connect to the muck beyond a brief check in due to various RL reasons and stuff but I should be online this Friday for sure
