SCENE: Redthorn Tavern, Ferravale
LOG:
Patch is busy doing some cleanup work, as it is just past the hour when the tavern is usually busy, so most have left but a few beasts still are here drinking and chatting. There is also a fight that just fished up in the fighting pit and it seems the looser has to pay for the other's dinner as two ferrets walk out of the fighting pits.
A tall cloaked fox walks into the tavern, a thick navy blue tunic and cloak for winter is on him as he takes a look around and smirks a little before making his way over to the main bar area.He has a small blade at each side, but they are not drawn.
Patch gives a nod"Ello thar what ya be needin'?" He studies the fox before speaking again"Ya new around here, not seen you before but we do get passing visators at times"
Orel walks into the tavern, the sea-rat removing his hat and moving toward a chair by the fire, he glances around to see who else is around and waves to Patch but otherwise heads for his usual chair by the fire.
The fox speaks,a deep voice"Strong ale....."He glaces back at a clatter of a chair falling down,a hare is seen quickly saying sorry to a couple rats that look ready to punch him.The fox snorts "Helem get over 'ere now!!" The hare quickly gets to the fox side."S..S..Sorry s..sur I am here n..now"It seems the hare stutters when he speaks and sits beside the fox quietly.
Patch rasies an eyebrow but goes to get the ale,he decides to himself to be areful around this fox as something just seems off to him.He returns with the ale and offers it to the fx"Here ya go.."He nods a hello to the hare"Ya wanting something too?"
Orel frowns at the way the hare is behaving, he lived on the shore long enough in Halyard to not be used to seeing a hare be subservient. He settles down and stokes up the fire for now.
The fox pays for the drink.Helem blinks and just shakes his head no as the fox takes a long drink of the ale, finally speaks "Whom is in charge of this village? I have an offer for them they may well enjoy"
Patch listens and gives a slow nod "Well chiefie is likely busy, but I can give her a message if ya like"He remains calm, he listens and looks to most to be bored right now.
The fox smirks"I have some slaves, not far from here.Looking to make some coin from em in fact."He looks at Helem and speaks."You are gonna stay here and listen to all de rat here has to say."A nod is given to the fox as the fox speaks to Patch again."Helem here is my person servent,he can get details and such and report back to me." He chuckles coldly "And do feel free to slap him around if he tries anything stupid." Its very VERY clear this fox is for sure new to this area.
Patch keeps a monotone look as he listens but in his mind he panics on what to say,but he is smart and decides to...play along,he clears his throat"Sure thing, ya ummm....got a name i mean chiefie, she will ask...she super strick like that."He glaces at the hare."Oh I will..keep an eye on dde hare" He looks back to the fox.
The fox replies "My name is not important rat and I will only speak to your chieftain. Now if you will excuse me,I have to get back to check on tempary camp.Tell your chieftain I will speak with them in a few days time."He gives Helem the you best stay put and behave or else look before he departs, most watch him go and then look over at Patch afterwards after the fox heads out the doorway.
Patch nods and then releases breath he didn't know he was holding "Oh boy..oh boy what I do now, this is bad..so so very bad..Orag...hey over here."A stoat walks over, one that is the tavern bouncer,"Ya could of asked me ta throw him out, been fun..." Patch shakes his head,"No no...not really, oh gee..ok breath"He takes a couple deep breath and...oh yeah the hare, he almost forgot the hare as he looks over at him,"I...ummm...hey there, he called ya Helem right?" Orag sighs as he sees Patch on the line of Panic or don't panic."I can find Blisa..."
Orel stands up and walks on over to the bar, "That was... odd."
Helem looks at the floor as he is spoke to and just replies "Y..Yes." He stays put where he is but ricks a look at the near panicing rat, he has seen near and full blow panic before but usually it ended badly for most.He frowns.
Patch frowns "Odd? That was a slaver! And he cleary has no idea thats unwelcome and he seemed all creepy and all calm and chieie is not here"
Helem frowns more"C..Chiefie?" He glaces at Orel and just stays put,he is unsure what to do right now."U..u..unwelcome?Bu..but ya said....ummm"
Orel says, "Well the CHief and her snake will sort them out, or the Abbot will," the rat shrugs, "We can just make sure they are not welcome here.""
Patch nods, he glaces at the hare"Ok you...Helem, your to do what ever I say...right?" He looks to Orel "Yeah, but tis best ta be careful"
The hare sits up better and nods "Yes sur..t...t..thats right"He frowns, the stuttering seems normal for him as he speaks "He..he will be back, and he has 4 other guards with him...w...w..wot do you need of me sur? I can do most things, deliver messages...ect"
Patch frowns "First stop with de sur...2nd."He is serious too.."Details of the slavers..where this camp of thiers and also...since it seems I was given power ta order ya around, here a command.."Hee waits and slides over a key"Its a room upstauirs...fancy and you go there, ya stay put..I...I will say ya escaped or something...tis a room usually for special guests like de abbot and such.."He hmms and looks at Helem"In fact...ya give this info ya have of ya former...yeah forer boss fox guy, sound good?"
Helem looks at the key wide eyed nd seems unsure weather to take it or not "Umm..I..I..I..wot?" He looks at Patch and Orag.
Patch takes a deep breath " Take de key....look slavers are seriously unwelcomed 'ere, you hide in de room, I pretend ya escaped or....idk chiefie snake ate ya and no dont worry that won't happen but we can...say it did.Just stay in de room till like me or orag say de all clear."He sighs"We do like some info on de fox,his gang, any other slaves?"
Orel says, "Not here," said Orel softly, "This is the first place they will look if you say they escaped," the rat frowned, "You should stay at mine, it is near the centre of town, I have the spare rooms and a basement. It is unlikely they will try and search my house but they are liable to try and search the tavern.""
The hare takes the key, still so unsure. "I...II.."He looks at the key in his paw,a tear escaps his eye"I..don't..wanna really hid, but..t..t..tis best maybe?" He looks at Patch "Others....yeah like 4-5 slaves, I dont know the fox name, he never gave it...he has a couple friends of his that are guarding the other slaves...some abanded like camp or sumthing..huts b or close to the river."
Patch hmms, "Orel has a point, but ya choose where ta go.."He listens"Huts by a river?.."Why is that so familar,he then frowns "Could i be....no way, then again they are off who knows where...so would be a bit, wee bit abandoned"
Orel frowns, "We could try and escort you to Redwall Abbey too if you do not want to stay here... I know a couple of Defenders, I could get word to them, have them escort you to the Abbey you'd be safe there."
Patch nods"Abbey could be good. Not sure who in charge of de defenders since stripy.."He frowns"Also thar be a tunnel from here ta the defender base in de back, they could even find a disise for him before he left town"
"Defenders?" Its clear he has no clue who they are but he will listen to any plan to get away from the fox and in the safest way possibe.
Orel says, "They are a local group, woodlanders, vermin, banded together to keep Mossflower safe from the likes of them""
Patch nods, a smile"Use ta be run by a badger, and not ta worry de vermin species in de group are not evil, thar are some vermin who dont do evil around, its not a really large group like it was..unless they have recruited lately and I missed it somehiow" He thinks on it since the embers would come to the tavern alot.
Helem replies "A b..b..badger ya say?" This seems to help him feel some better.
Patch nods "He was a friend."He speaks softly and nods at the key"But ya can still use de room till we can get ya to the abbey..maybe under cover of dark, not sure"
Orel says, "Yes there are a couple of badgers around here... we can get you out of this and someplace safe soon enough""
the hare nods, a small smile that seems rare to him "Thank ya...and hopeful
Patch nods "oK...strange squirrels?" He is a bit confused and then speaks "That Badger Mother is sometimes here ta check on de Blacksmith since her father use ta own it."He doesnt go into detail.
Orel says, "Well sounds like we have a plan of sorts then, we just need to get you someplace safe for now""
He nods"Safe be good."He frowns "I//I w..would like to get to the western shores, maybe in the spring"
Patch says, "Wot is it with the western shore and you hares...sides tis a fair long jorney in winter, spring be best for that sort of trip""
Helem just shakes his head "I had plans ya know, jion de jolly Long Patrol...did for a short time...had a couple days off in Halyard...then slight chaos happen in de ..late summer think was and well.....yeah..t..t..trouple found me"
Orel says, "Well trouble finds us all but we can at least do the decent thing and get you away from that""
Patch says, "Well, I dont want trouble here, no tis been peaceful and wanna keep it that way, get rid of this...fox and friends real quick before it gets serious""
Helem nods "Peace is always g..good chaps, but yes the fox won't...won't leave so..so easyly"
Patch says, "Fer now..Helem, go on to de room upstairs, we will get ya to de abbey soon, not ta worry"
Helem takes the key and nods, he glaces at the two rats before heading to the room, locking the door and staying inside.
Orel says, "Well that was something good at least," ORel settles down on a bar-stool, "I'll have an ale if I can patch""
Patch watches him go and sighs as he sits down. Then stands to get the ale, poured into a mug and served to Orel."Here ya are Orel, so..ya been likeing Ferravale so far?"
Orel says, "It is nice, it is full of interesting beasts, no one is hassling me to be a seer all the time and I get to enojy myself""
Patch chuckles "Good ta enjoy life.I am sure if it ever be important...then yeah de furture could be found...maybe. One don't need ta get all...whats de weather or what ever, ha....just look out de window or ask some old beast how he feels, most complain if its gonna get too cold soon"
Orel says, "It sure is cold, but the house I bought is snug and quite nice, more then enough for me""
Patch nods "Good, good...tis not always, well too bad in winter...now last winter, yeah too much of de snow fer any beast."He shakes his head"Though still a storm at times, today seen some bits of frozen sort of stuff falling"
Orel says, "Last winter was awful down on the shore, we had ice forming on the tide line each evening it was not nice""
Patch says, "Sea life not fer me, maybe others."He chuckles a little "I was thar...once, thats enough...see de umm"He looks around and speaks "De long ears don't like me too much, neither does Lord Stripes...."He frowns remembering being throw in the river moss "Yeah he clearly hates me.""
Orel says, "Well I do miss the sea sometimes, but it is easier to be here and retired and not being bothered," he smiled and picked up his ale, sliding coins over to Patch, "And I have not seen anything we need worry about other then a storm that is due sometime soon.""
Patch nods "Uhhh hate storms in winter..."He gets the coins and looks at the door, and up the stairs to the rooms."Just so de peace stays...peace is good, very good"
Orel says, "Well storms happen, the slaver flaunting his slaves around town is distasteful however, I hope that can be dealt with.""
Blisa had been in her office, going over her notes of the structures in Ferravale and which ones needed work, when Oreg the stoat had come, telling her she was urgently needed in the tavern. Knowing Patch wouldn't bother her unnecessarily, the cat hastily bundled up against the cold and hurried over, Ferdinand the ferret and Valerie the vixen close behind. The Chieftain bursts into the tavern and rushes to the bar. "Patch, Oreg said I was needed urgently. What happened?"
Patch nods "I agree, clearly not from around here.I am unsure what de hare ment bout huts by a river but have an idea.I had orag go find chiefie" And perfect timing as he looks over at Blisa "We had a very intresting tavern guest Blisa" Ohhh he said her name, this is serious
Orel turns around on his barstool and nods to the chief but lets Patch do the talking, he's mostly here to enjoy life and not get too involved in village stuff unless the chief calls on him.
Blisa cocks an eyebrow. The fact that he used her actual name and not some nickname forestalls her remark about him just telling her instead of beating around the bush. Instead, she says, "What kind of visitor, Patch? And where are they now?"
Patch takes a deep breath "A slaver, some fox..had a hare with him, de hare is upstairs. The fox called him his personal servent...."He seems nervous and worried "I kind of, sort of....well freed the hare..sort of and he knows where like 4-5 other slaves are and that de fox, who never gave a name, has two others working for him. And they are at some temp camp at de river, he decisibed it and...well.."He frowns "May be de GUOSIM camp..least they are elsewhere, pronapply somewhere warmer knowing those shrews"
Orel says, "Slavers are an awful lot, I hate them myself," he frowns, "Hopefully we can sort this one out before they decide to do something stupid like go for the abbey children""
Blisa's tail poufs up. "A slaver? In Ferravale?" She thinks quickly. "Yes, you did the right thing freeing that hare, Patch. We should put him somewhere hidden in Ferravale for the time being, then escort him to Redwall when it's safe enough. The Guosim camp...it would be a good place to hide out when the shrews aren't there, that's for sure..." The cat scowls. "We need to figure out how to defeat the slaver band and rescue the other slaves. What did this fox say he wanted, anyway?"
Patch growns and replies "To talk ta the chief only, well...you"He frowns "He clearly new to the area....he wanted to...sale the slaves to you I think"He frowns again"I sort of...played along, as fer de hare, Helem umm....if de fox asks he umm escaped...Badil ate him or thats my idea anyways....iof that works, meanwhile de hare by then ion de way to abbey. The fox said he be back in couple days"
Orel says, "I offered to put the hare up in my house, just so he is not in the tavern as this place is rather public, but it would be typical behaviour, wanting to sell his slaves to the chief to curry favour with you.""
Blisa's tail lashes back and forth as she takes in the information. "Yes, hide the hare in your house, would you, Orel? If necessary, we can ask Markalaway to hide him for a time, as well. I don't want to risk taking the hare on a journey to Redwall until these slavers are defeated. We'll say the hare tried to make a getaway, ran to my house, and got eaten by my snake. That should put some fear into these slaver's hearts, if nothing else." She paces slightly. "I should meet with him, pretend to play along, get him to bring all his slaves and slavers here. The villagers I know will more than likely help attack the group -- nobeast in Ferravale has anything more than hatred for slavery."
Patch nods "Well he is upstairs, Orel should likely take the hare quickly..just in case."He then remembers "The hare also menyioned how de fox tried to capture so odd looking squirrels but basically failed.."
Orel nods and stands up, "I will go and take care of tha tnow," the rat says, "I'll get him safe in my house where no one can see him."
Blisa nods. "Yes, do it quickly, Orel, thank you. You know which villagers can be trusted with secrets -- if any of them ask, tell them he is a runaway slave, and they will help hide him. But try not to be seen, just to be safe." She turns back to Patch. "Strange-looking squirrels, you say? I wonder what that could mean, unless he meant some Abbey squirrels. Some beasts think the Redwallers look strange in their habits."
Patch shurgs "I don't know, ask de hare when ya see him.."He clears his throat "And I dont think, or seen any abbey beasts around, likely all warm and cozy in the abbey. It is a bit colder today"
As Orel leaves, Blisa thinks for a moment. "You're right, Patch. But if they weren't from the Abbey, who on Earth could they be?"
Patch says, "I could ask around, I do try to keep rack of things around mossflower still, well best I can...but odd, strange squirrels..hmmm...a snow whiye clamn mayybe or....nahhhh too cold fer that lot ta show up right now""
Blisa shrugs. "We've had a lot of beasts travelling in this weather, so I wouldn't be surprised by anything now. A clan of Northern squirrels wouldn't be amiss. Who else could the slavers have met, though?"
Patch shrugs and thinks, a ferret nearby speaks "Gawtribe...them pretty crazy look woodlanders..wearing feathers and such and grass clothing"
Blisa tries to be a good leader and listen to all, so when the nearby ferret speaks, she just nods. "I've heard of them, but I don't believe I've ever seen a member of their tribe in person. Why would they be travelling, though? ....although why anybeast would be travelling in this weather in beyond me, so I guess I shouldn't question it." She turns back to Patch. "Do you think you can safely do some scouting for me? We need as much information about the area as we can get."
Patch nods "I can try, sure thing...and I know how ta be carefull too, I can climb trees...well maybe not too well in winter"
"Just don't get caught," Blisa cautions. "Pity the blackbirds have migrated south. We could really use their help, but they won't be back until Spring. We need somebeast to take a warning to Redwall, as well."
Patch nods "Yeah...hmmm,I could look around, someone could check out de shrew camp....gee I sort of miss those shrews..for certain Oswald..."Yeah he most likely misses the coins he made off the shrew performing,,so many more beasts ate and drank to watch the shrew sing and dance.
Blisa sits at the bar, resting her head in her paws. "This is going to be difficult and dangerous. I hope the fox doesn't see through our bluff. We need him to think he can trust us if we're to slay him and his followers and free the slaves. If only the shrews were here to help!"
Patch is a bit worried, "So...let him come back 'ere? and...make it appear ya going ta buty slaves then....then what?" He can play along, for a short while and he is very glad he didn't full blow panic, others just seemed to shocked to speak or just kept quiet.
Blisa stands. "Yes. Trick him into bringing the slaves here...then the villagers can kill the slavers as they please while the slaves are escorted to the freedom of Redwall." With that, the Chieftain leaves to go talk to Ann and some of the business owners of Ferravale to let them know the plan...
Patch takes a deep calming breath....great it is NOT WORKING, he sighs and sits down to have a hard drink, he needs a drink...to think, to calm down, oh boy the next few days are gonna be intresting, thats for sure.
