SCENE: Redwall Abbey's Great Hall.
LOG:
Velm sat at a table eatting some soup and a couple rolls, he still seemed to have his mind on other things but otherwise was trying to have a peacefull afternoon.
DoraRose is wearing her black training outfit, and she looks like she was crying recently. She walks over with a tray of food and sits beside the hare, resting her head on her paws and staring miserably at the food before her.
Velm sighs "Tis been a sad past couple days lass. I think most here are upset"
Gorvenalus enters from the library and nods a hello "Greetings..my friends" He doesn't add his usual how are you as that be a bit upsetting likely to ask most beasts.
DoraRose pushes her food away and slumps across the table, hiding her face in her elbow. "Xander went through so much....he deserved to die of old age, happy and surrounded by his friends..." Over on the staircase, Dochas peeks around the corner, then darts back into hiding.
Velm frowns "We will find the killer I am sure of it.Though I do hope they bally well don't try and harm anyone else.I think they left in a hurry if ask me, they didn't plan ta leave when they did..least don't think so, who would travel in this snow and ice"
Gorvenalus sits down "Xander's death..came as a shock to all. He likely would of ogttten the status of Brother in the Spring, he worked so hard as a novice."
DoraRose wipes away tears as they start to trickle down her cheeks. "Oh, we will find this...this murderer someday. I swear it on my sword and my father's axe." Dochas slips silently into Great Hall, hugging the wall that is darker than the other, sneaking around things, trying to slip unnoticed towards the door. She has a small haversack on her back, a stick in her paws, and a kitchen knife tucked into her belt. She is being her very utmost sneakiest. Dora doesn't notice, not yet, anyway. The mouse nods. "Xander was trying so hard. That's part of what makes this so hard. He would've been a spectacular Order Brother. He probably was tricked by that accursed cat into helping her, like any Redwaller would."
Velm frowns "Wish we bally well knew more of this...cat lass"He blinks as he looks towards where Squirrelbabe is, did he see...movement? A soft hmmm, then he speaks" From wot can tell..tis was the eveing before when Xander was last seen and about the same for that cat too"
Gorvenalus says, "They could not of ogtten too far my friends, this...snow is everywhere but also it could be dangerous to try and serch, maybe some clues line in that hut in the clearing, was that not where they..were?"
DoraRose sniffles and pulls out her hankie. "I was too upset to notice anything, really, other than a frustrating lack of tracks. If the killer had been there, I probably would've gone into the Bloodwrath. I..." Dochas freezes when the hare looks her way, and she doesn't start moving again until no one is looking towards her. Even more cautious than before, she continues to sneak across the hall, ducking and weaving and hiding behind as many things as she can. She so far has managed to stay silent. The mouse Warrior shakes her head as she wipes her nose. "Velm found a knockout dart, though. Right?"
Velm looks at the wall again and frowns, after this whole missing badger cub and dead novice he is a little jumpy at odd movement out of the corner of his eye, he stands looking that way "Aye,I did find a dart lass...still have it too"
Gorvenalus nods "Maybe an idea..what is the matter Velm?" He sounds slightly concern since the hare seems on alert about something in or out of the room.
DoraRose nods. "Maybe you and my grandmother can try to figure out anything from it...." When she notices that he's on the alert, she stands, too, reaching for her sword and stifling a grumble when she remembers it's not there. Dochas, realizing she's been noticed, completely changes her tactics and darts away from her hiding spot, going at a dead run towards the front door. She is wearing a sweater, scarf, mittens, and hat, as well as a child's cloak. She's obviously ready to travel.
Velm frowns and goes to try and catch the dibbun "Come back here right now young lass, tis no time for some adventure time wot, wot!"
Gorvenalus frowns when he sees the dibun"Oh my"Wait why is the dibbun all dressed to go out, this can't be just to play in the snow.
Squirrelbabe is quite fast, but she's no match for the speed of an adult hare. She is quickly caught, and she starts wriggling frantically. "LEMMEGO, I GOTSA GO FIND OZZIE AN' BRING 'IM BACK!!" She goes to hit him in the face with her stick. He needs to be careful since that kitchen knife is just tucked into her belt. It's not sheathed or anything -- the sharp edge is fully exposed. Dora crosses her arms and sighs heavily. "Oh, Squirrelbabe..."
Velm frowns, he been through worse "Lass..tiss dangerous out thar, you could get hurt. Now we have beasts to serch for young Oz don't ya worry young lass"
As quietly as possible - a far easier task than John could have guessed considering the chaos in the hall - the squirrel opens the main door to slip inside. With snow falling off his over-cloak as he moves, without noticing or acknowledging the dibbun 'violence' and stand off, John first bends to strip off his high boots to hold them in one paw before beelining for the great hearth. Once he's made it to the fire he takes off his gloves, followed by the cloak and thick gambeson underneath. Hanging all on the mantle or setting them on the stone by the fire, the squirrel allows himself some time to rub his paws and enjoy the warmth. "Squirrel babe," he addresses the ring-leader in a tone that though tired, is commanding. The type he used back when he did mercenary work in long seasons passed. "Whatever in 'ellsgates ye managed tae get yore wee paws on - drop it, nae, fore all our sakes."
Gorvenalus sighs and stands, "I will get some tea" He does so and evben some apple tarts and sits the tray of tea and tarts down, mugs are here also ofr the tea.
The irate Dibbun continues whacking at the hare's head with her stick. It's almost a miniature quarterstaff, actually. "You grown-ups do NOTHING!! Sit an' talk an' talk an' talk an' talk, while Ozzie is probably out there being turneded into a slave again!! YOU DOIN' NOTHING!!" DoraRose marches over. "Give me that stick--OW!!" After receiving a solid thwack on the forehead, the mouse manages to relieve the squirming Dochas of her stick. "Just like we travelled to save you and the others, we'll save Oz--" "NO YOU WON'T!! You a coward who sits around doing NOFFINK!!" The Gatekeeper's eyes widen and nostrils flare as she strives to keep her temper in check.
Velm frowns and then speaks "Lass...from reading logs"He was trying to find info on the siege and found info on the dibbun slavers and read it "We knew...or basically, who did that...this we have no blooming clues..well maybe de cat lass, she is a bit..missing as well"
Benar was in his office, but all the noise has drawn the Abbot away from the paperwork and he comes stomping down the stairs. His sandals are clacking on the stone and the elderly grey squirrel walks into the great hall and stops to look around at everyone.
John finally turns around, observing the baby squirrel and the gate keeper, wincing the latter is smacked. "Perhaps there's some truth tae that, squirrel babe. Ah certainly 'ave does far tae little h'past seasons..." He walks over, shaking some more snow off his ears. "Though maybe ye'd like tae know that Ah've been out fore th'past days looking fore th' wee Oz, an' risking th'cold an'wet." he knees down in front of Dochas trying to look her in the eyes - the gaze is honest and kind (at least as much as John can manage) and not angry. "But these are dangerous times, wee one. Ah've done me best figuring out were they went - but these things take /time/, they do. If ah could waltz up n'save Oz tawdry Ah would, an' so would Dora here, an' everyone - especially poor Krisha. But we cannae. Ye attacking those beasts who feel th'same as ye helps nothing, it doesn', an' mayhaps ye should apologize fore th'welt ye gave mrs. Dora, 'ere."
Gorvenalus just looks over at Benar, he tried to keep the calm best he could. "Join us Benar?" There is tea and tarts.Gorvenalus stays calm, somehow and will quietly write down things if needed.
Velm looks over at Benar "Hallo Abbot..."He rubs a bruise forming on his cheek and frowns at Squirrelbabe "I say...that hurt lass"
DoraRose keeps the stick well out of the way of the Dibbun's grasp. Dochas manages to scramble out of the hare's grasp, and she stands there, tears trickling down her cheeks. "We went through so much...we on'y jus' got back...I want Ozzie back..." She starts to cry. She allows the Gatekeeper to relieve her of the kitchen knife she has in her belt. Turning to place the weapons on the table, the mouse spies the Abbot. Oh, goody. "Oh, Benar, hi." Squirrelbabe looks up at the squirrel Warrior tearfully. "Did....did you finds any clues??"
Benar looks around at the situation and moves across the room toward the squirrelbabe, he doesn't show any anger and crouches down and just holds his arms out to her, "I am sure John has found many clues as has Dora and everyone my little one, come here, you can sit in my lap and we'll listen to what they found together."
There's a moment or so were John doesn't quite realize what's being requested; though he soon dips his head in a bow. "Right then, father Abbot." He straightens up, looking down at the ground. "It's -" he pauses, choosing his words carefully, "Because o'th' snow an' time there wasn' much tae find, though Ah knew th' clearing well enough, Ah did. Th'tracks there were all tae confused from all h'beasts that were tramping around there - but," he raises a paw as if to reassure his audience, "Ah did find twa' sits o'tracks, well enough Ah did." He gestures towards Dora and Velm, "Th' first were three sets leading ou' o' h'clearing tae th'road with th'telltale signs of dra-" he cuts himself of, giving a fake cough to avoid finishing the sentence, "Well, anyway, an' those matched up wi' returning tae th'abbey. But th'second set o' tracks - large boots mind ye, so cannae 'ave been our dear hare an' mouse here, methinks. Less there's another two badgers running here abouts. So Ah followed those as much as Ah was able tae before fresh snow fell, an' aftah that it were north o' here." He leaves any mention of the blood he found out of his tale. "There's more, bu' Ah donnae think it 'twa'd be wise tae say here."
DoraRose sags slightly. "Big prints? I don't know of any more badgers in the area....could one of them have belonged to that cat, Esmeray?" Dochas considers the Abbot's invitation for a moment, then shakes her head and crosses her arms, staying put where she is. "I no like bein' touched," she mutters, then glares at the squirrel Warrior. "But did you find signs o' Ozzie?? He's gotta be saved!"
Benar says, "We will find Oz my little braveheart squirrel," the abbot moved to his chair and sat down carefully and slowly, "They will not keep him from us"
Velm frowns "The ones who did this can't of gone too blooming far, even with snowshoes ta help travel somewhat"
John meets the small squirrel's glare with a raised eyebrow. "Truth be told, Ah found little o' anything o' h'wee badger, though ye might the that as a blessing. What Ah did find very well were Xander's. Found nae o'er tracks that may belong tae a wee badger, neither, so he didnae wonder off into the freezing cold nor were he killed - Ah spent a day searching within a league o' tha' place fore if they-" again he cuts himself off, before continuing. "Either way, that might be o' little comfort tae us, fore as far as Ah can guess th' owner's o' the large boots may 'ave carried him off. An' unless these Ems-whatever her name was had a change o'heart, Ah'm fearing...well." he doesn't need to finish the thought, the meaning clear enough.
Squirrelbabe leaps to her feet. "I'll come with you when y'go out agin! I'll be good an' help y'find Ozzie! Promise!" She is immediately scooped up into DoraRose's arms. "No, we need you to stay here, sweetheart. Maybe, with the Abbot's permission, I can start teaching you the ways of a Warrior, since your heart is too brave to be a member of the Order." The mouse gives Benar a look as if to say, the Dibbun needs something to do. Dochas ceases her wriggling and looks around at the other adults hopefully. "Really? I c'n be a Warrioh like Martin??"
Benar meets Dora's eyes, he keeps a frown off his features, "You could start learning with Dora yes, she will teach you what you need my dear. And... we still need to talk about if you want to join my family, you can help me learn how to look after everyone in the abbey."
John allows himself a slight smile at squirrel babe's proclamation, though he doesn't say anything more. Though at the mention of more warriors his expression darkens if only for a moment. "Mayhaps," he says in response to the abbot and gate keeper despite not really being a part of any decision. "Though fore me part Ah'd hope tha' there'll be little need fore more o' our sorry lot when yore older, Ah do."
Krisha has been mostly in her room today rarely ventureing out since...well. Just out of the room a couple times as she ventures only half way down the steps to see what is going on.
DoraRose squeaks slightly at the acrobatic leap Dochas does out of her arms. The Dibbun smiles ecstatically. "I'ma be a Warrioh jus' like Martin! Den my friends'll nevew ever ever get hurt or in trouble agin!" She looks at the Abbot for a moment. "I..." should she dare hope she can have a family again? Her real name means Hope, but will she follow that path and hope for good things? "I....I'ma htink 'bout it. DoraWose!! C'mon, let's git started now!!" The Warriormouse looks a bit taken aback by Squirrelbabe's enthusiasm. "Well, okay...first we're gonna go to the library--augh!" The Gatekeeper is dragged off by the DAB Ringleader snagging her paw and pulling her off.

Benar shakes his head and settles back in his chair, he trusts Dora will divert the little squirrel with things as required that are just warrior enough without teaching her anything too strenous. He nods at John and sighs, "I should return to my paperwork, I need.. to keep the abbey running despite all of this"
John watches the squirrel and mouse leave, his expression unreadable. In response to the squirrelbabe's reasoning he mutters something to him, especially in light of recent events. "Ah wish that were so, wee one." He falls quiet again, wandering over to test how dry his things are. He nods to the father abbots words but stays as silent - though when he spies the badger mother o the stairs he comes back to himself. "Krisha - greetings!' He does his best to convey any welcoming joy he has with a smile to her, though in light of the recent of events it falters.
Krisha gives a short nod, "Hi " She says quietly and comes the rest of the way into the room.
Benar says, "Oh Krisha," he smiles and moves over and touches her arm, "It is good to see you down here..... I really should get back to work but John will keep you company" "
In normal circumstances John might have fled in response to being volunteered to keep somebeast company, though he wrangles that part of himself now. "Farewell, father abbot!" He calls after the older squirrel, before turning to the badger. "Th' beaver placed a kettle fore tea earlier, he did, an' th' water may yet be hot, methinks." He's moving rather aimlessly about, thinking though very aware of the other creature. "Krisha -" he begins, "How're ye holding up?"
Krisha sits in her chair, for now not speaking, she shrugs with a frown "I.." She leans back in her chair going quiet again. "No..tea, you have.....some"
A wry grin appears on John's face despite himself. "Nae thank ye, Ah actually donnae much care fore it meself." He looks down at his paws again, unsure how to proceed. "Krisha - it might be o'wee comfort tae ye, but from all me searching Ah believe Ah safely can say yore Oz isnae dead." The squirrel shrugs, still standing. "That's rather troubling still, bu' nowhere as bad as well, well." A sigh escapes him.
Krisha frowns, "He...could be anywhere and..." She stops least she have a breakdown, she clears her throat after a moment"Some one...mentioned a knockout dart, maybe he...tried to run" She founds in thought of Oz very likely seeing his father die as a few tears fall now
John freezes, not all that sure what he can do, before accepting that fact. "Ah donnae think he's alone, though, so that's something even if th' company he has are what we think they are. An' badgers are hard creatures tae hide or miss." He takes a seat across from her, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees. "A knockout dart's more hopeful than an arrow, fore that means they donnae wan'tae kill him. He's still out there fore sure. Which means we can bring him back, it does."
Krisha speaks" If find him....they......how in all the ice and...snow"
Allowing himself a brighter expression John replies, "Th'deep snow makes them easier to find - ye can't hide the tracks 'less ye've got a blizzard on yore paws, an' Ah were luckily enough tae get there before h'fresh snow we got yesterday an'taeday. While Ah cannae tell th' exact beast's paw through a boot, Ah can make a guess it were a large creature - Ah'm already thinking 'twas that cat, as well as another one like her, methinks, judging from h'size o'boot. An' a cat or twa' witha wee badger is nae something most folks would forget. Ah'm gonnae go out again tae ask 'bout th'woods."
Krisha says, "Oz needs to be home, not....where ever he is, he needs found before I...lose him too...found alive if possible"
"Aye, Ah'm certain everyone here an' ye especially want that." John leans back into the chair rubbing the bridge of his snout. "Problem is - it'll take time an' Ah cannae go with out rest fore days on end. Ah'll go out once again in an hour, though Ah cannae promise Ah'll return with any news."
Krisha sighs "Rest till....morning, rest is good to focus better...what ever clues will..likely remain...probably"
John dips his head. "Indeed, though truth be told Ah'm mostly here fore a quick warm meal an' tae dry me outer clothes -" He waves to his things by the fireplace, "An' tae relate what Ah've found. Ah'll be fine once those are dry." Standing as he says this he goes over to check the cloak and other things. Mostly dry. "An' Krsha," he starts, in a far more quiet voice, "Ah'm sorry 'bout Xander, an' Ah'm sore regretting Ah talked little wi'him th'past seasons. Ah was proud o' him, methinks, fore being a novice. He did what Ah cannae..." He chuckles at himself, a mirthless sound belaying some deeper digest with himself. With a shake of his head he grabs his things and quickly puts them on, nodding in farewell to Krisha before the other creature can say another word or even acknowledge what the squirrel said or implied of himself- and John is back outside, heading for the north gate and Mossflower beyond in the dying light of day.
