Koda stays close to Varus, Terrence, and Zolomon and does exactly as he is told. Yes, he is a nervous wreck but manages to calm down and help best he can as he keeps repeating "You're a Long Patrol hare... you're a Long patrol hare....your brave and fearless..." It helps him stay focus as he tends to this mission of saving the ship crew.
Donica frowns as she peers over and watches the private get beside Rufus, the private tries to figure out the best way to get the gull up without hurting it further, also without getting hurt themselves, and extra rope may be good to have as this is gonna take some patience and skill.
"Yes sah!" Terrence quickly heads off to the kitchens were more hares were bringing up anything they can from the stairs down to the storeroom. "Greenhill? Get you'h squad and meet me, the majah, and the badgeh lord outside. Quickly now!" The doe salutes and runs off.
By the time Terrence gets back to Varus and the others, the squad of hares are following behind. He casts a concerned glance towards Koda, but says nothing of it; instead, he goes to the majah. "Sah, got the hares right here. Sergeant Zolomon, you got the ropes?"
After speaking to his wife briefly, Varus waits at the mountain entrance for however long it takes Terrence and Greenhill to arrive, nodding to the badger lord. Then, heads out into the storm with Koda, the wind and rain whipping around them, lightning flashing, lighting up everything in sight for a brief moment, only to be followed by booming thunder. He knows Ciocan has joined his group. "Right, ho, this way!" He yells, over the blinding storm, and heads out over the rock towards the ship in distress. It's almost impossible to see in the distance through the driving rain and hailstones. He worries that one of the surges could dislodge the wreck from the rocks and sweep it back out to sea, but he has an idea for that. If he can even reach it in time.
Zolomon nods as he shops the ropes , "Yes sur"He will also help keep Koda safe, as likely others will too. The lad could do something more on shore maybe, something helpful but leave the more dangerous stuff to others.Zolomon is in serious mode right now, not his joking self like he is sometimes. The hare knows when to be serious after all.
Rufus looks at the private "Bunny......bunny not fit ledge...."His voice sounds weak and he is soaked with rain, some blood is caked on his broken wing. He watches the hare closely as he normally peck at them, very few can get near this gull and most stay away from him unless he is in a good mood, right now he is far from a good mood but he also knows he needs help..."ss....help...Rufus?"
Ciocan follows Varus, he lets the Major take the lead, calling over the storm, "Just tell me where you need me Major, I am here to be big and strong, but you're the expert at this sort of thing," Seems someone has read the Major's file.
A massive wave sweeps in, however, drenching everyone in spray and salt as the wind and rain howls around them. The ship is balanced precariously atop a large rock, a group of squirrels are on the rock with a rope, desperately trying to find something to tie it too but one of their members has just been swept away.
Up on the crater top the private lifts the seagull, he may be big but he is light at least and starts back up with Donica's help, intending to get him inside, "Bunny is here to help," the young private mutters, "What where you doing flying in this storm! Crazy bird.... let's get you inside."
Donica keeps a close eye on the private and Rufus and makes sure neither falls. As soon as they are up on the crater she backs up a little and frowns "I can look at him better inside, someone can tell his Lordship wot happen ." She is diffentaly gonna need something to warm herself up, as will others in this rain.
Rufus clacks his beck as he is brought back up, he replies...."Rufus...fly over...big water....get fishies by large rocks...other gulls live by big rock but no like Rufus....so he fly to Bunny Lord home...Bunny Lord is....friend..." The gull is likely gonna pass out soon, this will also help some as he won't be moving too much, but where to place him will be the question.
"Zolomon - we're same rank, don't call me sah." Terrence grabs the longest rope and ties it to a rock high up. "This'll be the guiding line - everyone else who's coming, make sure you'h own lines are secure. Half the squad'll remain on land to assist when needed, understood?" He strips off his coat and uniform tunic, as well as taking the time to remove his boots. "Oh, and fo'h those going fo'h the dip strip to you'h under-shirts. We don't need to be bogged down by extra cloth."
Once done he grabs a second rope and ties it about his waist, walking over to Varus. "Majah, sah, if I might request something of you-" He doesn't quite wait for the major's response, "I mean no disrespect but Zolomon and I are the youngeh hares still in ou'h prime, and the badgeh-lord is a badger; but you're getting on in seasons no mattah how good a commandah you are. I'd like to ask that you might consider staying on the shore here to keep watch ovah ou'h lines and ovah-seeing the recuse from here?
Zolomon sighs, he is use to calling Terrence sur and anyone higher than Sargeant so...well he is still gonna do that, sides he sees Terrence as more experienced still as Terrence has been a sergeant longer than himself. Though Zolomon has learned a lot and does very well with the privates and recruits now. He will help where told of course.
Varus is quick to grab Koda's belt when that massive crashes over himself and the younger hare before the guide rope can get set up. "Oy, there y' go, tryin' t' get away from me..." Trying to keep some levity here. And now the two hares are even more soaked than they were before, prompting the Major to strip off his dripping uniform, lest it impede his efforts. "One o' ya, try t' rescue tha' squirrel that just got swept ovahboard!" Sadly, said squirrel was likely swept out to sea. Only the most brave or foolish hare should attempt that rescue...Or maybe a badger. After the guide rope *is* set up, Varus makes sure Koda is the first to be tied down, after that whole almost washed out to sea, bit, and then the Major turns on Terrence. "Oy, young lad. Yahr callin' me old. Stop that. Also, before we c'n do *any* rescuin', we gotta got this ship lashed inta place, lest we watch it get dragged out by the next surge. You and Lord Ciocan can 'elp their captain wi' that, first..."
Koda's eyes widen as he seems to almost meet death and he gulps, he shivers some but he is not sure if it's fear or the cold water. A couple breaths and he calms a little from his possible near death and proceeds to help where told.
"Telling his lordship can wait," Quinten says as he lowers his telescope and wipes water off the lens, "He is on the beach with Varus," he turns and motions to the private to help carry Rufus inside, "Right let's get in, I then need to give orders to the infirmary, we are about to receive people in need of help."
The general heads down the stairs back into the landing and calls for the nearest patroller and starts relaying orders for the infirmary and the hare currently in charge of linens. He is then informed of the chaos caused by the flood in the basement and mutters under his breath. "Ok open Barracks D on the ground floor, all people coming in from the ship-wreck go in there, we need blankets and the firest built up."
The squirrel who was swept away is well gone, vanished under the surge but up on the deck someone shouts, "Ahoy the shore...... we need a line! We'll meet you half way," the squirrel captain clings to the edge of the railing and shouts orders down at his crew then turns to the mice clustered on deck, they look like passengers from the way they are all clustered together in a panic. The captain keeps talking to them all as the rain lashes and then lightning zags out of the sky and hits the mountain with a mighty boom of lightning.
-
Donica nods and goes to help get the seagull inside "And it be wise to keep the gull......on the far side of the infirmary. I do wish Lt Velm had not went on his trip..we could of used an extra healer but I can get the healers we have all gathered up, and I think one with Major Varus too." She helps get Rufus inside and to a cot so she can look him over. She frowns as she has not ever helped a bird before but will try her best.
Rufus doesn't try to peck anyone, he just caws out a couple of times when bumped, touching his wing though gets some rather rude words! But he is tried also.
Terrence is still holding the end of the long line he had attached to the large rock in addition to his own line. "Very well sah." He waves to the captain. "Right then!" He calls over the wind and rain, "We will meet you there!" Turning back to hares around him he barks out, "Someone grab my line - I'll get this out to them. We don't need more than one going out right now."
Zolomon keeps alert and calm as the rescue starts. He keeps a strong grip on his own rope as he waits for orders. Some other hare helps Terrence out by keeping a hold of his line.
Varus turns his gaze back to the ship, to gauge how far the fire has spread, if it's a raging inferno, or not. In spite of Terrence's words, it's highly likely the older hare will make a move toward the ship to assist in the evacuation if necessary.
Dominik had been outside when the initial storm had begun to hit, and at first, it wasn't too big of a deal; he'd dealt with much worse before, and with storms involving quite a bit of snow. However, as the winds began to pick up and the hail started, the large hare had decided that there likely would be trouble had anyone else gotten caught outside in the storm. He'd already removed his uniform at this point, clad in just his undershirt, and the hulking form trudges in the direction of Varus, his head down and against the wind. All he needs is instruction on where he is needed, and that is the direction he'll go. He gives the older hare a look, and that's all that really needs to be said.
Quinten leaves Donica to handle Rufus and makes his way further down into the mountain, he has orders to give, things to prepare and he has faith in Donica as a healer to help the seagull. The private remains however to help carry the bird down to the infirmary proper.
Ciocan reaches over and pats Terrence's shoulder, "Listen to the Major lad, we need you to get some ropes from shore, up onto those railings, it won't hold it for long but it'll give the ship a bit more time whilst we get everyone off."
The badger lord frowns ahead and takes the rope to be used as a guy rope, "I will meet them halfway, Varus you know what to do we need to stabilize that wreck and check below decks if we can."
Ciocan then starts to walk forward, his huge, hulking form barely bothered by the spray from the crashing waves and rain and the wind. The squirrel however are struggling along in a group of five, dragging their rope with them as they advance. Up on deck, the captain can be seen trying to keep his passengers from panicking as the crew throw rigging down the side to form a ladder of rope so people can reach the rocks once there is a way out.
Donica gets something off the shelves, this will help a great deal with the bird as she adds it to some water and gives it to him "This will help the pain " It will also make him sleep too but she won't add that info, but yes it helps with pain as well as she will need him to hold very still while they get that wing back in place and set and banded up,then check on anything else. She is also here with the other healers to get any beasts tended to from the ship wreck.
Elbio is here with blankets and hot cider for anyone who needs them, and even checks the infirm supplies if he is asked to.
Rufus eyes the hare but does drink the water. He is soon in dreamland and won't be waking anytime too soon. This will for sure be a great help in fixing that wing as that's the main issue, anything else is fairly minor.
The sergeant had just about been ready to dive into the freezing water himself when the badger lord pats his shoulder. "Sah-" Terrence seems about to protest for a moment. "Yes sah! DOM!" He shouts, spying the arctic hare. "Come along and help me with the ropes now. And get a safety line around you'h waist."
Dominik gives Terrence a simple nod at the instruction given, though he smirks a little as his gaze shifts over to the endangered ship. "No safety line. Vil get caught on things. Dom help vith ropes. Help secure ship." And he goes to help with said ropes, his ears folded back against the wind, though he doesn't seem to mind the rain pelting him in the face. Wouldn't be the worst thing that's happened to him.
"Very well, Dom. You'h funeral." Regardless of whether or not Dom is following him with a safety line, Terrence follows the badger with the ropes to stabilize the ship. It's a dangerous going but he does what is told to and will return to shore soon after, awaiting further orders while also grabbing a breather.
Varus nods to Dom. "Do as he says." As the rigging comes down as a makeshift ladder, Varus starts to climb up it, indulging in the exact type of "foolish heroics" he warned Koda against. When he reaches the top, he sets foot on the tilted, leaning deck, and addresses the huddling mice, "This way, follow me, you lot!"
Zolomon follows where he is told to follow and stays on his safely rope. He makes sure it stays secured also as he is careful and makes sure others, like Koda, stay on the shore and watch the ropes from there and help beasts inside when ready.
Ciocan has met the squirrels and tied the two ropes together, it is now an acting anchor, something to cling to. he sends the sailor squirrels to shore and remains there, a vast bulwark against the lapping, crashing waves.
As Varus boards the ship the black furred squirrel who is captain joins him and starts to hand mice down over the side and down the ladder, "Make for the shore, hold to the rope and make for the shore everyone."
With Dom and Terrence's help the crew take their lines and tie the ship fast, it lurches and shifts as the waves and mild storm surges lift it. Several of them pull the ropes taught to sing and thrum with water and spray but they are about as good as they are going to get but they are holding the ship from now as the line of mice and squirrels begin to head for shore, slipping and stumbling but with the rope to hold onto they are making it.
The captain lifts his head, and shouts at Varus, "Are we glad to see you, we thought we where done for, this storm has been driving us for days! We had no way to escape it... just hope and pray!"
Dominik seems to be able to hold his ground relatively well against the heavy winds, the large hare quite practiced in moving about in such weather. He'd been a ship builder after all before he arrived at Salamandastron. He follows after Terrence, and helps to secure the ship with the ropes they'd brought out, wading out into the water in certain places to do so. The large hare works with stoic silence, his expression only changing occasionally when a bit of hail bonks off his eye or nosetip, but even then it's only a small wince and nothing more. Upon finishing this task, Dom trudges back around and up onto the rocks, where he follows Varus onto the deck to attempt to evacuate those on the ship. "Anyvun below decks?" His voice booms, searching out any specific way to get down there if need be if there are others trapped.
Varus cups his paws around his mouth, to call back to the captain squirrel, "We're th' Long Patrol, it's our credo t' help those in need!" When Dominik joins him, he nods, echoing the question. "Aye, anybeasts trapped down below? Anybeast trapped by th' fire? We brought an axe, we'll chop through the decking if necessary..."
Donica meanwhile inside tends to Rufus and then once done helps get things ready for the ship crew and anyone else that needs a healer." Get more blankets and hot tea ready. A healer is on shore as well to help out.
Zolomon helps a couple of the crew to the shore " Stay thar and we shall get ya inside soon"
The captain clings to the side railing as the boat ships, "Aye there be some below decks, about four, five maybe in the main hold. Fire is mostly out, cooks dead so no one else in there."
The ship sways and moves and Ciocan raises his voice, "Hurry captain, Major, she won't last much longer," there is a singing crack and Ciocan moves and grabs one of the anchor ropes as it parts, he plants his feet and holds onto it as the passengers and crew continue to scramble up the beach, "I can't hold this for long!"
With Rufus being tended too passengers and crew start to arrive in the infirmary and the barracks, hares wrapping them in blankets, sending those who need medical help to the infirmary whilst helping those who just need drying off and warming drinks into the barracks. There are mice with children, squirrel sailors, a couple of otters the person in most need is a young mouse, heavily pregnant and currently in labor from all the excitement but the mountain's midwife descends and starts to look after her.
The storm is still raging but the boat is mostly clear now except for Varus, Dom, Terrence and the Captain, "We need to check below decks then clear out," the squirrel captain yells.
Dominik gives a booming, humorless laugh as Varus mentions using an axe. As the captain mentions the possibility of there being others below deck, he gives them a look, before the large hare trudges his way over towards the door leading down into the belly of the ship. One thud of the shoulder into the door dents it...a second cracks it....and a heavy, solid thwack of his footpaw, and the door caves in. Dom trudges down into the darkness, eyes searching for the signs of any survivors down there. "AM HERE TO HELP. FOLLOW VOICE!" the large arctic hare booms, looming in the wrecked doorway, holding onto it with a paw. "NOT MUCH TIME!"
Donica helps a couple of beasts and looks over at the midwife " Did you need any help? I could get warm water or another towel?"
Varus grimaces and grabs the railing as the ship *lurches*, hard. "Quickly, Dominik! Captain... I must insist... We'll get the four beasts... You should get away, now..." He knows it's a losing proposition to tell a captain to abandon his vessel when there's still beasts aboard, but he has to try.
Zolomon looks over at the ship and frowns, thr ship looks too dangerous to stay on much longer.
The Captain laughs, "That's Lord Captain of House Farqueharian and I leave this ship once everyone is off my good hare!" He leans forward and peers through the spary and lightning and wind at the side.
Inside Dom would hear someone shouting for help, an eye appeared on the other side, a squirrel, "Help! Make it larger.... Rog is trapped under a beam we can't get him out! It is just the four of us help please!"
Donica sits down a moment to rest, it's been a long day so far.
The Midwife smiles at Donica, "I am happy for more help, if you are done with Rufus please come and help, mostly, or young mother to be here needs someone's hand to hold and talk to."
Dominik's expression grows steely with determination as the crewmembers' current situation is relayed to him. He makes his way further in, searching out the one who is trapped. He points a paw back towards the hole he made where the door had been. "OUT! NOW!" He barks. "Help is outside! Follow them. Vil get this vun out! GO!" And with that, Dom finds the one who is trapped under the beam. "Be calm, Dom here to help," he replies to the trapped creature in as calm a voice as possible. He looks over the situation carefully, only taking a few seconds before he crouches down and braces himself with his arms slipped beneath the beam. He begins to tug upward on it, grunting with the effort...it doesn't take long before the sound of splintering wood is heard. He continues with his efforts, hoping to at least make enough room for the one who is trapped to wiggle out.
Donica nods as she goes to talk to the mouse wife and keep her calm best she can.She does glance over at Rufus and then back to the mouse wife.
Terrence is up on deck, standing by Varus. It seems the sergeants intent that if the ships does break free, he'll toss the major overboard to save him.
There is a large sea otter trapped under a fallen beam, he glances up at Dom and smirks, "I think it might take even more then you lad, get going! Ia m done for." the other crew have reluctantly left, the three of them making their way past the badger lord.
The other anchor cable snaps and the after end of the ships starts to grind and draw away from the beach, Ciocan groans and shifts his stance, "I can't hold it much longer."
The black squirrel captain curses and climbs onto the railing, "We will have to go soon hares....." he shouts down to the last of his retreating crew, "Is that everyone?"
Zolomon makes sure all is getting to shore, he hmmms." Ok we need to hurry this up I think"
Varus looks at Terrence, the curses, d5awing that axe he brought from his belt. "You get them outta here. That's an ordah, dammit!" And then he goes below, stumbling as the ship lurches again, and starts to hack away at the beam like a madbeast. "We aren't leavin' ya... Not if we c'n 'elp it... It's 'ighly likely we're about t' be swept out t' sea... Y'r an ottah... We'll need y' to drag our sorry butts back t' shore... Think y' c'n do it?"
Dominik gives the sea otter a glowering look that seems to say 'not on your life' as he is told to leave. "No," he states in a flat and in other circumstances, likely dangerous tone. "Vil not leave to die. Lie still. Dom not finished." Perhaps said otter had underestimated the large hare, and didn't really realize how strong he could be. Arms still settled beneath the beam, his eyes close for a moment, ears and whiskers twitching as it seems he is attempt to channel someone...or some-thing-. A moment later, his eyes open once again, and any any all emotion seems to be fully gone. A snark curls upon his muzzle, and he yanks with all his strength on the beam. Varus coming in and hacking at it certainly helps as well, and soon enough, a large chunk of the beam snaps off in Dom's arms, likely freeing the otter. He stands there, shoulders heaving, as he tosses it away.
Zolomon will wait till all are off the ship and help get the rest of the beasts inside, they are greeted by old Major Pete who looks grumpy but also hides worry, he may have some news on some of that flooding from ealier.
"Sah, losing a sergeant wouldn't be as big a blow as losing a majah." The words are out of Terrence mouth before he can stop them, but he moves to help where he can. "Hopefully we won't have to worry about that!" He tries to soften his words with the last sentence before grabbing the railing (and any sailor thats still on the deck). "ALRIGHT THEN, EVERY BEAST OFF THIS SHIP NOW!" He barks, his voice being carried by the wind. "Try to do it orderly and don't drown."
With Dom and Varus both working they get the otter out from under that beam but the Badger Lord has let go, a storm surging wave slams into the boat and lifts it! The whole thing creaks and shrieks and starts to break up all around them as it is swept back out to sea.
As the ship starts to crack the otter rolls over and loops an arm around Varus and shouts at Dom, "Grab hold" and will go to dive out into a wave, taking both hares with him and using the momentum of the wave to carry them all toward shore! The captain hops over the rail and grabs the rope tied to shore and the last two members of crew go with him.
"Come along then lad! Terrence was it? To shore my friend, to shore!"
The ship continues to break up, Ciocan standing on the shore starts to real in the boat, the otter uses his legs to guide Dom and Varus onto the shore and then it is just a matter of retreating into the mountain as the storm rages! It shows no sign of letting up yet, they have hours, if not several days of hurricane to deal with before it blows itself out as it travels east.
Varus is pulled along by the otter, back to shore. He loses the axe in the process, but it's not like it was an antique battleaxe that was a family heirloom of the distinguished Battle-Born family. No, certainly not that. When they reach shore, he coughs a bit, then looks around. "'Ow many made it?"
The Badger Lord walks over, picks Varus up, stares at his major, "Do not do anything so stupid again, but congratulations on the rescue."
He then glances at the black furred squirrel who is talking to one of his crew, "Everyone of the passengers is safe, we lost about seven crew, some in the crash, a few getting the lines to shore but that's about as best as we could hope for."
Dominik had been grabbed too quickly to really react to much, and the large hare is dragged out into the sea by the otter. A little stunned, he isn't really able to do much but help to maneuver their way to shore...and upon reaching said shore, he is quick to disentangle himself. Pushing himself back up to his footpaws, he trudges his way a short distance away, and just crouches there with his back towards the others, his shoulders slowly rising and falling as he stares off into the darkness of the shore. In his paw, he still holds a small bit of the beam he'd lifted off the otter, and he peers down at it with a blank, almost confused stare.
Terrence is laying down on there shore chest heaving from the effort of having to swim back after a wave knocked him into the water. Luckily the his line held and he was able to pull himself back to shore. "How many?" He blinks, sitting upright and coming to his senses. "Zolomon! You still kicking? How many made it? If the sergeant doesn't answah, then someone else tell us. We should get inside, regardless."
Varus half-heartedly salutes the badger. "Sah, no sah..." He nods, then helps Terrence up. "Th' Lord Captain already said. All th' passengahs made it. 'E lost seven crewmembahs... C'mon... Let's get back inside..."
Ciocan pats Varus's arm and turns and helps the sea otter up and then pats Dom, "Good job Dom, right inside all, the beach is closed."
Dominik lifts his eyes, head turning as he stares quietly at Ciocan as the badger pats his shoulder. His expression is blank, flickering only a little, the hare just staring for awhile, before he quietly rises up and begins to slowly trudge back towards the mountain.
Donica is in the hallway by the infirm to greet anyone else needing a healer.
Terrence stands, grabbing his now soaked items he stashed behind the rock, undoes his rope, and follows after the others inside. "Dom?" He asks, falling into step next to the hare. "You alright there?"
Dominik glances down at Terrence as he is addressed, and he gives him a similar look he'd given Ciocan, though perhaps there is an extra bit of something else there, as his muzzle creases into a frown. He grunts softly in response, before turning his gaze away from Terrence and continuing onwards towards the mountain. He seems quite a bit more tense for some reason...
Donica watches as everyone heads inside finally and sighs, she needs sleep and likely will get some if able.
Varus takes up the rear, picking up his discarded uniform, and herding the stragglers through the storm toward the safety of the mountain
Donice heads back to the infirm to help where needed, she then goes off to get some well needed rest as tomorrow will likely be a very LONG day as well!
