SCENE: Salamandastron forge
CHARACTERS:
Hares: Male: Gregorian (Greg); Terrence. Female: Felicity.
Badgers: Ciocan, male.
LOG:
Between working his way through a backlog of smith work, making glasses, fiddling with prototypes, trying to train recruits to join the forge, fixing all manner of things around the mountain, somehow keeping up with paperwork and everything else related to being a lieutenant and then general dad work Greg has been considerably busy since they got back to the mountain and mostly been trudging along in his own little world. He's currently on his own working on a very bent sword and ignoring a pile of papers and the fact he hasn't taken a break for lunch yet. By now the rest of the hares had probably picked through all the best food anyway so he saw little point in hurrying to get anything.
Felicity noticed the Smith's absence from lunch when she went in there, baby sister in tow. So she sweet talked the chefs into giving her some of the best leftovers (which are actually surprisngliy good) to take to the Lieutenant after she had dropped Julia back off with the leveret caretakers. The Sergeant just walks into the forge, no knocking, no frills, no ceremony. "Greg, Sah," she says politely as she sets the tray on whatever empty space she can find that's not the floor or a hot surface, "I undahstand bein' busy. Seriously, I nehav asked t'be Sergeant, an' all th' papahwork is 'bout t'drive me batty! An' I c'n barely believe 'ow much paint Julia was able t'get into 'er fur th' othah day when she got the DAB to take ovah th'classroom. Bathtime 'as been even more of a pain than usual!"
She's not expecting him to have really heard most of this. She's mostly just talking to get his attention for the important part of her mini speech. "But as a concerned friend, I must ask y't'please eat some lunch. 'Eaven's, doin' all this wi' Dom's made me sound even more like me Mum than I was before..." That lats bit is a grumpy mutter, because who actually wants to sound like their mother?
Gregorian has his hammer raised to hit the heated sword but he pauses at the sudden arrival. The hammer lowers however as his eyebrows raise while Felicity keeps talking. For a moment he's trying to find the purpose or problem that needs solving in her speech but it all becomes clear when she asks him to have lunch "Ah" he leaves the broken sword to cool and takes his time while he talks, putting the hammer away, removing gloves and generally neatening up and tucking away boxes of work since he has company "Yah needn't worry that much, I would have got tah it eventually. No motherin' required...which is just as well, yah far too young tah be actin' as my mothah. Yah just come on a mission of mercy or can I do somethin' for yah?" he questions as he finally grabs something to snack on.
Felicity smiles as she watches him put stuff away. "Oh, I'm actually 'ere f'r a numbah of reasons. Mission o' mercy, askin' 'bout Dom if y've talked t' 'im, 'idin' from my arch nemises, and..." she pauses dramatically and pulls out her sword. "Makin' sure I'm sharpenin' this thing correctly. I think may'ap m'time bein' a toad prisoner 'as addled my brain, too, 'cause I feel like I don't know 'ow t'sharpen this thing satisfactorily anymore. I could use a refreshah." Her face and voice hardened a tiny bit as she mentions the toads, and she seems to pull away slightly internally from the conversation. But she hides it with a smile as she holds out her sword at the end.
Gregorian frowns slightly at the mention of Dom but he grabs a file and whetstone, using the sword as a suitable distraction "I spoke tah him, briefly...my tempah was not exactly up tah the conversation. He's hidin' down in the catacombs...Brought a damn toad skeleton down there" he mutters the last bit, still a little irritated "Yah know how tah sharpen a sword though if yah anythin' like the rest of the mountain yah don't do it enough..." he can't entirely focus on the job though and has to ask "Who is this arch nemesis?"
Felicity successfully hides a laugh. She doesn't even snort or smile. She deserves a medal. "A toad skeleton, y'say? Well....so long as 'e keeps it down in th'catacombs...I'm sure m'oldah brothah would've been laughin' 'is 'ead off ovah that," she adds with that wistful humour people get when talking about loved ones they miss who are gone forever. "'Ow often should I sharpen m'sword?" She asks, cursing herself for mentioning her nemesis. "Oh, just some doe. D'y'think I can get m'own whetstone and file somewhere? 'Twould be easiah t'sharpen m'sword if I 'adn't lost those things in th'swamp."
Ciocan does go to the forge at times, he spent some time in there where the hares were on that mission in the swamps in fact, he just doesnt go in as often as one may think he does. He walks in and raises an eyebrow at the voices he hears and peers inside from the hallway before walking the rest of the way inside.
Gregorian doesn't look happy about it, he's got a proper grouchy old frown on "Well I don't like it. I don't want some toad that would have tried tah kill us soon as lookin' at us sharin' space with our dead...Don't like Dom livin' down there eithah, it's not the place for that" grumble, grumble, grumble. "As often as yah usin' it probably" He finally replies to the question of sharpening and he points over to one of the work benches at the question about the whetstone "There's probably anothah in one of the boxes ovah there" it's a moment before he glances over to the door after is creaks open but the moment he does he's smartly straight to attention, after putting down the sword of course "Sah"
Felicity shrugs and walks over to where the Smith had pointed, secretly glad he's dropped the whole nemesis thing. "Oh, aye, I c'n see why, Sah. I figure we c'n get rid o' the skeleton once Dom gets 'is senses back, wot!" As he salutes, the Runner turns, whetstone in paw, and she, too, comes to attention and salutes, careful to not smack herself in the face. "'Ello, y'Lordship, Sah."
Ciocan walks the rest of the way into the forge as he was barely inside and it seems someone failed to report something "Wot is this about a skeleton somewhere?" Yes he knows Domink is back, not all the details though.
Gregorian gets back to work pretty quickly after the salute, turning back to the sword to file it quickly "Toad skeleton, sah. Dom...somehow seems tah have snuck it back with him. He was hangin' about with it...He's gone weird in the head that hare"
Felicity steps forward. "Aye, Sah, 'is imprisonment by th' toads seems t' 'ave caused somethin' in 'is 'ead t'not be workin' right anymore. I'm tryin' t'work wi' 'im t' 'elp 'im come back t'th'way 'e was...I am, uh, concerned, Sah, 'bout 'ow othah beasts might treat 'im, includin' superiahs who may think 'e's a lost cause an' try t'ship 'im off t'Redwall or somethin'." She's also concerned she's out of line, but her friends have always been more important to her than her rank, and so she presses onward. "I believe that wi' every single beast out there, while there is life, there is 'ope, an' I think bein' in familiar surroundin's wi' beasts 'e knows well can 'elp Dominik come back t'us. But I'm worried some othah 'ares 'ere won't see that."
Ciocan listens to both of the hares and then speaks "I don't want him ta keep this...toad skeleton, but at the same time it's likely not a good idea to just take it away suddenly or too soon."He seems to debate on going down there himself but has yet to. He looks at Felcity as she seems to have a lot to say " Any reports on wot did happen to Private Dominik? And getting him back to normal or least close ta normal would be a good thing, just how to safely do it is the question, I don't want any hares endangered by im' "
Gregorian squints at Felicity as she talks about some wanting to send Dom away. He frowns, thinking quietly for several seconds until finally his frown deepens "Like hell he's gettin' sent away. We took too long gettin' him back tah ship him off. Redwall's not goin' tah help any. He's not afraid of fightin', he was practically lookin' for it out there...He's ours tah deal with, somehow. I'd like tah hope Dom's still got his senses in there somewhere but I don't know how tah get them back. He's actin' like a toad or somethin'" he shakes his head at the badger's question "Reports a plenty sah. They apparently had him fightin'...Felicity was among the captured"
Felicity swallows. "I think lettin' 'im keep th' skeleton 'til 'e's bettah, an' lettin' 'im live down in th' catacombs 'til then, too, might do 'im some good. An' I'm more'n willin' t'put m'self in dangah t' 'elp m'friends. Although I don't think Dom's too much of a dangah so long as 'e doesn't feel like 'e's bein' attacked or anythin'." There it is again -- the small withdrawal, as if the Sergeant is putting up mental sheilds whenever the toads are mentioned. Her face hardens slightly, but only a little. A subtle anger -- or is it fear? -- that may not be easily recognized. "Aye, I was their prisonah f'r a week. Dom 'ad it worse'n I did. Those blasted toads forced 'im t'fight t'th'death, ovah an' ovah again. I think 'tis a miracle 'e came back with us at all. Even though they lit'rally drove 'im crazy, I still think 'e's strongah than most othah 'ares, seein' as 'ow 'e's not tryin' t'kill anybeast in their sleep, wot!" It's so subtle how she turned the conversation away from her imprisonment to the topic at hand...
Ciocan nods "And no, he will not be sent away. He will stay at the mountain." He frowns at the idea of a skeleton being with Dom all the time. "BUT things need to be done slowly with him, no moving too fast and no yelling at him.Find something that gets him talking, something he remembers to get him back to what he was before. I am unsure on training exercises yet, unless he is closely watched. It is also not such a good idea for him to stay in the catacombs either...someone should visit with him, even a short while and talk to him, let him know we care and we are his friend and he is missed, help him remember things he did."
Gregorian only points out Felicity's capture as if anyone knows what happened there it was no doubt her but he doesn't notice the discomfort. He gestures his file at the badger lord "There yah go, rule and law, Dom stays here...I don't think any trainin' would be wise for some time. Not until he starts tah seem like himself again and undahstands who we are and where he is. Last I spoke tah him he didn't seem tah know his own name. Kept callin' himself Ugg, Erg, Arg, I don't know. He insisted it was his name though" which is another thing Greg looks grumpy about.
Felicity looks confused. "'E let me call 'im Dom aftah we 'ad got 'im and were on our way back 'ome," she informs them. She slips the whetstone into her pocket and sits down on the floor, rubbing her face. "When I'm with 'im I try to talk t' 'im 'bout things 'e used t'do, try t'triggah memories." She rests her paws in her lap and smiles at the badger. "Ye've taken a great weight off m'mind, Sah. I've been worried sick that 'e'd be sent away an' so nevah get bettah. Thank ye."
Ciocan says, "Sides...already got a hare at the abbey, come to think of it may send a letter see how he is." He clears his throat "But yes Dom is better off stayin' 'ere...with us. I am sure he will get back to his self or close to himself, but it will not be an overnight thing, will take time. Also if thar is anyone you think would upset him, don't send them down to speak to him, stick with those he got along with. As for being called ..Erg...hopefully we can slowly get him to be Domink again"
Gregorian raises an eyebrow at Felicity at first as Dom let her call him Dom "Hm, well yah got a bettah way with him than me" He looks slightly concerned when she sits on the floor. That's not a usual place to be! He puts the file down as the conversation continues "I don't know where tah start with him. I don't recall any hobbies that may triggah any memories...Yah doin' alright in general now lass?"
The door to the forge opens slowly and as quietly as Terrence can manage, poking his head around the corner to gaze in. "Eh, lieutenant?" He sees Gregorian first - the hare he had wanted to see - and the two others; while he is wearing a pair of spectacles once more, they're clearly not made for him and ill fit his head, making him look almost leveretish compare to their large size. "Oh, your Lordship" The sergeant, surprised to see the badger, steps in more fully to give a small salute, before turning back to the one-legged buck. "Anyway, sah, I just wanted to check in to see how the whole teeth-and-glasses are coming along, wot. And, well," he rubs the back of his neck, "Hello there, Felicity."
Felicity nods. "I'll keep that in mind, Sah....wait, does that mean I'm sort of in charge o' 'elpin' Dom get bettah, Lord Ciocan?" She's debating about how to avoid actually answering the Smith when in comes her fellow Sergeant. Hooray! Perfect distraction! "'Llo, thah, Terrence," she greets him. "Th' Lieutenant's sharpenin' m'sword at th'moment, but I can't say anythin' 'bout any othah task 'e's got goin' on." She stretches her legs out straight and touches her toes, acting as if that's the whole reason she's sitting on the floor.
Ciocan says, "I didn't say in charge of the task, but helping with it. Others can talk to Dom as well, those he trusts that is. I had thought of going down thar, but I might wait. Trying to think of a good spot away from the caverns he could, well be and always have a hare with him at all times if possible" He nods to Terrance.
Gregorian remains unconvinced by Felicity's sudden work out but he's not going to push the topic while there's an audience, particularly as Terrence appears "Hrm? Ah, yes" a brief glance at Felicity's sword and he decides that's now his second job. He pats down his pockets despite knowing that neither item is in them. A quick pause by one of the work benches to remember where he put things and he goes for the obvious hiding place of everything small, under the paperwork. It only takes him a minute to find the little box he'd been keeping things safe in "One set of glasses and teeth. Glasses might need some minah adjustments once yah've got them on but the healahs provided everythin' for the propah lenses I believe" he offers the pair out to the Sargent "Teeth are somewot of a new job tah me, might take some gettin' used tah but they should do the job"
"Seems every hare has something for our good lieutenant to do, eh?" Terrence says, with a slight grin to Felicity as he accepts and opens the box from Gregorian, peering in. "Righto, thanks." He take off the large spectacles to replace them with the proper ones - they fit far better, but even so seem ever so slightly loose. "Really, thank you Greg." He stares down at the fake teeth next, holding the two little knobs up and inspecting them with his now far better eyesight. "They look all propah to me, sah, if that counts."
Felicity stands up and nods to the badger. "Okay, Sah. I was just a little confused, sorry." She thinks for a few moments, her brow furrowing. "I 'onestly don't know, Sah. Are there any rooms down in the caverns that aren't bein' used? Like, we 'ave that archery range, and a bar o' sorts. Are there any rooms we don't really use? An' who would 'ave th'patience an' th'time t'stay wi' Dom all the time?"
Ciocan shrugs "I am unsure, hares could take turns perhaps" He turns to the doorway when a hare clears their throat and looks over at them "Yes?" The hare is a private and frowns but then speaks "You're....needed in de mess hall sur..." The badger sighs "For?"..."It would seem...thar was a fight over the last apple pie and then it started a food fight and all the umm...recruits and dibbuns are..like..." The badger mutters and walks into the hallway, he stops "Why isn't one of the...never mind I don't want to know" He disappears into the hallway.
Gregorian has had enough time to fiddle with making the teeth before they left but even so "Lookin' right and workin' right are two different things. Tryin' tah make them small enough tah stay out the way but strong enough not tah break is the challenge" he says as he peers closely at the glasses, trying to see how they fit. Terrence may just have to put up with him being very close for a moment as he goes to make adjustments to the bridge and arms to improve the fit. He frowns as Ciocan's called away for a food fight escalation but he doesn't say anything until the badger is gone "Who could imagine a fight ovah pie could warrant a badgah lord havin' tah intervene"
Terrence had decided some time ago to say nothing on the matter of Dom, as he considers himself one of the /last/ hares to voice their opinions in that regard. And to be frank the sergeant has less knowledge of the mountain's layout than he probably should and he absolutely knows next to nothing about any empty rooms, so his silence about Dom continues. "Sah." He gives a parting salute to the badger lord as he passes, before leaning back ever so slightly from Gregorian. "Well Sah," He begins, fitting in the two fake teeth, "I suppose that's true." He pauses to run his tongue over the spot. "They do feel fine, though, but I'd guess I'll have to do some eating before really finding out..."
Felicity rolls her eyes. "Oh, if th'DAB is involved, 'is Lordship may be th' /only/ beast able t'stop 'em, wot!" She sheaths her sword. "Actually, I should see if m'sistah is involved in that....thanks f'r th' 'elp wi' m'sword, Sah," she tells the Smith. "I'll see ya latah, Greg. Talk t'y'soon, Terrence." And she slips out the door. (Her sister was actually NOT involved in the food fight. Maybe she's too busy planning how to sneak down and say hi to Dominik...)
Gregorian peers very closely at Terrence as he judges his own work but he does eventually seem satisfied enough to back off and give the sergeant some personal space back "If yah see Grace involved let me know. See yah latah" he says as Felicity leaves and he looks back at his work with a little sigh as he's mentally running through his to do list "Yah let me know how they work and if yah have any problems. It's always a bit of work in progress when yah try somethin' new" and with that he's returning to the broken sword he had been working on. Eventually he might even remember to finish his lunch.
