There is a slight mist of rain today as the funeral for Oz is about to begin.
Benar is here, with the staff he has for different events, the one with the little silver bell at the end. Also nearby is Foremole and the Elders of the abbey stand close to him as well.Champion Maltilda stays close.
Gorvenalus is here standing beside Benar to show support. He sighs as he watches as beasts start to come into the graveyard.
Patch is even here, and surprisingly he is in nice clothing, but he stays off to the side and watches with a frown.
Krisha is of course here, she keeps the dibbuns close to her and has with her to help Sister Ginny, and Brother Rick as well.
Taran at first didn't want to come, but after a while did make the walk to the abbey and now is one of the beasts here, he wipes away a few tears and waits quietly.
Lacota enters the graveyard, walking slowly. He pauses for several long minutes at the grave of his wife, doing his best not to show undue emotion. Anyone who knows him well can see that he's still deeply affected by her death, however. He waits for Benar to start speaking before he approaches the rest of the beasts in the cemetery.
Invar is there. Silently he takes up a spot near the back of the group and waits, lost in his own thoughts.
LilyMoore comes silently into the Graveyard, accompanied by DoraRose and Angela. They are wearing matching black dresses and aprons, and the old Healer has tied flowers and black ribbons onto the top of her staff. Along with them comes Blisa, clothed in a black sleeveless dress with black embroidery along the bottom, and her bodyguards, who have added a black band to the arms of their uniforms. (All their weapons are in storage, of course.) Lily and Blisa are already crying, and the Gatekeeper is fighting back tears, herself. Angela (who got drunk a few times this past week) stos by Leon's grave on the way, resting a paw on his headstone and sighing before continuing on. The group comes to a stop near everyone else, silently waiting for what happens next.
Benar steps forwards and nods "Friends...we are gathered here today to.."He stops a moment, the Champion is at his side and lays a paw on his shoulder as she nods, "Gathered here today to say goodbye to Oz.."He looks to where Oz lays in the coffin after the pallbearers bring it in slowly, and looks to the grave dug by the Foremole and his crew whom stay close by. He wipes away some tears "Would any beast like to..to say a few words?"
Lacota finally steps away from his wife's grave and joins the others. "I... I'd like to, if that's alright."
Gorvenalus will stay where he is for now, to record anything important, but he does speak "I will speak, here soon but others can go before me"
Patch stays where he is...then slowly raises a paw as others sort of stare at him and he frowns "Wot...I knew im' too...he...he was a nice old beast and..yeah he was nice ta a lot of beasts, even some of us vermin in..in Ferravale knew him and he will be..be missed " Ok he is not super great at words.
Caina ventures her way in as thoughts and eulogies are being delivered, just...keeping off to the outskirts, within earshot, quietly.
Xander walks in a little later, but he is here, he sighs and stays quiet for now, maybe he will speak soon or maybe he will not, its unclear yet.
Benar nods to Lacota "All may speak Friar Lacota"
Hawkeye walks forwards "I will speak."He says quietly and nods to the others "I didn't know Oz too long, but in the short time I did he was my friend and I am glad to of known him as friend. I can tell he was loved by many beasts."He then steps back and goes to stand beside Taran.
Raising her paw, DoraRose says in a quiet voice that yet all can hear, "Oz was a great friend, giving advice to all, as well as a listening ear and a caring heart, and a hug, if it was welcome. He helped me when I first came to this Abbey, he helped me in each season of my life, as a new wife, a new mother, a...a widow. He was always there for me, and even though he is gone, his strength, advice, and love shall always be here for us, to help guide us in the future." As she steps back and hugs her daughter close, Blisa steps forward, wipes her cheeks, and says, "He was one of my dearest friends, a father in my mind, a savior in the darkness of a prison cell when I was small. Oz....Oz may be gone, but....but the memories of....of him in my....my life will forever....forever endure." The Chieftain of Ferravale steps back and buries her face in the Gatekeeper's dress, weeping.
Lacota nods, clears his throat, and steps. "I've, ah... Only known Oz for a relatively small percentage of his long life, but that small percentage was several very good seasons of my life. He made me feel very welcome here when I showed up over 6 seasons ago, a wanderer from the north who had a penchant for cooking... And it was he that encouraged me to take pursue becoming the Friar. He was a true and dear friend, who will be missed..." He smiles sadly. "I'll keep the dandelion tea warm, Oz, don't you worry..."
Benar listens to all as they speak, a sad smile and listens as couple order beast speak also. He looks to see if anyone else wants to speak, he will give every beast a chance to speak.
Invar closes his eyes and bows his head as the speeches go on but he doesn't trust himself to say anything and he remains silent.
Gorvenalus looks around as he steps f forwards himself "Greetings all...I think I will say a few words if I may. Me and Oz talked sometimes and I too will miss him. He was a good, good friend"
Taran frowns as he goes to say a few words, he glaces over at Oz as some tears fill his eyes and quickly looks away before he starts sobbing, he takes a short while and speaks "Papa Oz was..was like a father to me, the only one I knew for a long while as I was brought here by some watervole..who died..I was maybe the only dibbun that survived when vikings attacked Camp Willow..I...I don't, maybe a couple others survived but they were not brought here, I was and so I grew up here. Then I got some memories back and made my way back to Camp Willow....yes Camp..Camp Willow is my home but Redwall is also sort of home too and I will..will miss him, a..a lot...lot..." He barely finishes and quickly goes to hug Hawkeye and stays like that for a while till he calms again.
Xander finally walks to the front and glaces down at Oz, saying a few quiet words to him and then looks to the others as some tears flood down his face "We should remember the happy times, the good times, Uncle Oz would not want everyone to remain sad too long and he surely doesn't want anyone to fall into depression, we..we must all be strong and..and help one another through this time..thank you"He steps back and will be here, just quiet the rest of the time.
Krisha hugs Xander before going to speak. She looks to the dibbuns and then to the others gathered here "Oz was one of the beasts that helped me when I first came here, I was...well I had not spoken for 3 seasons"She wont say why..she seems to think and then clears her throat "Him and Xander both helped me...then one day Oz said I was to be trained as the next Badger Mother..and so he started training me, teaching me a lot and I am sure there is more to learn."She smiles a little "Then like Oz said one time, he had yet to meet a beast that knew it all."She frowns "I hope I can be...just as good as Oz was but I can not be just like him, who..who can be like someone else..that's hard to do but I will do my best..I promise"
Hawkeye stands beside Taran and lets him cry on his shoulder if needed, he decides to stay as long as needed. Quietly listening and being here.
Angela clears her throat. "Oz was a good beast, a friend t'all. 'E will be greatly missed...." she pauses, but DoraRose nudges her, and she sighs. "Aye, an' I shall miss 'is talks an' 'is companionship. 'E was a good beast, may the seasons rest gently upon 'is soul." LilyMoore looks up, sniffling and wiping tears. "He was a good grandfather to me, and I am happy he was here in my life. I will....forever....forever remember.....his.....and.....and his presence will....will live in...in our hearts as long as we do.....do what's right." She hides her face in her mother's dress, and the Gatekeeper hugs her and Blisa close as they continue to cry.
Ewan decides he should speak and so he does "Hallo...ummm..suppose I can say some, words"He is not good with words and speeches in front of others though and frowns, ok so many looking at him as he looks down"Just...keep happy memories and..and I know Oz had..well letters he had me help him write and..yeah those were given out, seems he had the recorder give me one and..that was good, oz was a good friend and..will be missed.."He quickly steps back, ok speeches are hard and..a little hard on the nerves.
Benar smiles as others speak and then speaks forwards, "We say..goodbye to Oz..he was our Badger mother, an uncle, a brother...a"A few tears fall "A friend."He looks to oz and lays a paw on his shoulder"Goodbye..my friend, sleep well..till we meet again one day" He picks up a pawfull of dirt after the casket is slowly closed, he drops it on the casket as it is lowered into the ground and steps aside.
Caina keeps quiet in the back, listening politely and, between words said at least, making a few notations in a small journal before tucking it away into her habit and standing straight as the deceased is interred.
Lacota picks up a pawful of dirt, dropping it in after Benar.
LilyMoore, DoraRose, Angela, and Blisa each take a turn with the shovel, tears trickling down the faces of the older mice while the young mouse and the cat continue to just openly cry. Each of the cat's bodyguards take a turn with the shovel, too, murmuring their respects to the badger they also had come to deeply respect and, with Ferdinand, love as a fatherly figure. Then they step back and let more Redwallers in.
Krisha stays by Benar's side for now and nods to Sister Ginny and Brother Rick who let the dibbuns say a final goodbye and they are then lead to the open ground to wait on the Badger Mother. Krisha looks tried but stays alert and for now quiet watching as the others pay last respects.
Taran frowns and gets a paw full of dirt and drops it on the casket slowly and sniffs "G..goodbye..papa oz."He stands there a few moments and finally walks slowly away, he needs some alone time.
Ewan lets some others go ahead of him and then walks past the grave side and sighs, says a couple quiet words and walks to the side with some others.
Lacota wipes his eyes, the only outward sign of his emotion. The squirrel remains stoic, otherwise. He walks over toward DoraRose, and rests a paw on shoulder.
A figure stands near the back, arms folded across his chest...who would more than likely seem unfamiliar to anyone in the Abbey, save for anyone who may have been here awhile. It is a young male squirrel, currently cloaked with his hood covering his face, and he merely watches the proceedings with a stoic and unflinching expression upon his face. It isn't quite sure how long he'd been standing there...but as others start to filter out, he too turns and leaves, ducking his head as he slips back into the shadows.
Gorvenalus pats Benar on the shoulder and turns to head on inside, leaving Matilda with the abbot for now, he will be inside where he can quietly write down the events of today.
Benar lets tears fall and leans on the Champion as he stays here as others leaves, he nods to Foremole and his crew and stays till the grave is covered in dirt and quietly walks on back inside, him and the champion being the last two beasts to head inside to caern hole.
A light spread of refreshments has been laid out on a few tables along the east wall of Cavern Hole, flans, tarts, cookies, and other light snacks, as well as some drinks.
Caina makes her way into the Cavern Hole and exhales softly, just to sort of catch her breathing a bit. Once done, though, she moves over to fix herself some tea, taking a moment to glance about at who all has filtered in so far.
Benar sits by the fireplace stareing at the wall quietly, its been a long week for him and its easy to tell.
Krisha sits down in the badger mother's chair slowly and leans back, she looks tried but is still here if needed.
Lacota fusses about as abbey beasts partake of the refreshments he had set out.
Benar nods to Krisha, "Are you alright my dear?"
Brendan had made his way from the graveyard into Cavern Hole, much like all the others had, but the cloaked figure stands over near the stairs by himself, quietly watching those in the room with interest flickering within his eyes and a light smirk upon his muzzle. The place had certainly changed since last he'd been here, and he cannot help but wonder who all was still here from the period of time he was here as a youngster. He'd heard of Oz's passing via word of mouth out in Mossflower, and had made sure to try and made it back to the Abbey so he'd be able to attend the funeral. It seems he had arrived at the tail end of it, and so had decided to stick around a little to give his old home a look-over.
Caina sips her tea lightly and finds a spot to simply sit, not one to intrude on the other conversations, really. Taking time to adjust the sling holding her arm, she closes her eye and just sort of rests there a good moment.
Krisha nods to Benar "I am..will be fine."She stands "I need to check on the dibbuns and other things..check on Xander ..."She excuses herself and heads on up the steps.
Benar frowns as he watches Krisha head upstairs and makes a mental note to check on her later, for now he leans back in his chair, there for whomever needs him, Champion Matilda stays at his side.
