CHARACTERS: Benar, a male squirrel. DoraRose, a female mouse. Emyuil, a male mouse. Various spoofs.
LOG:
Benar is standing in the Entry, the abbot is wrapped up in his thickest habit, scarf, a woolly hat and gloves and is standing next to one of the hand carts that are going up to the spice market. it is laden down with various food stuffs. It is all surplus food really vegetables and wheat and other materials for bartering with the traders at the market. There are several abbey guards around, novices to pull the carts and a couple of abbey beasts attending to the abbot on this trip.
DoraRose is at the gate, looking longingly at the cart. She really, really wants to go; she's felt cooped up in the Abbey for so long, she wants to escape for a time! But she's not so sure the Abbot would be up for her doing that, so she's still debating about asking him. Her sword is at her side because she's on guard duty. Leaning back against the gate, she pulls the edges of her thick, mottled green-brown-grey cloak around her and rubs her bemittened paws together. Her hat looks bumpy because it's covering her ears.
Benar's thick grey tail dances back and forth behind him as he chatters with Sister Sylvie and Brother Albie about what they intend to buy. The three of them pouring over the contents of a list provided by the groundskeeper and friar. Looking up Benar checks around to see how the crowd are doing, most things seem ready he is just waiting for the badgers now it seems. He does spot his gatekeeper though and gives her a long look then smiles and moves sedately towards her, "DoraRose, good morning."
DoraRose jumps, startled. "Oh! Benar, hi. I was just, uh, watching the whole cavalcade y'got there. Looks like an exciting outing." Well, maybe exciting isn't the best choice of word, since her idea of excitement usually involves somebody dying. "Do y'all have enough guards?" She tugs her hat down and flips her hood up over it. She forgot her scarf.
Benar chuckles softly, "I am sure I have more then enough guards, Magramba has been quite indepth in selecting my escort,." he steps to the side then loops his arm around one of hers, "What I don't have is enough friends, so what say you join me in the capacity as Abbotly friend and we leave all the guarding and scouting to Magramba's beasts."
DoraRose smiles a little as the Abbot loops his arm through hers. "Wellll.....okay, yeah, sure. That'd be great!" She sighs. "I've felt cooped up in here for months, especially with the battle a few weeks ago. And now that....." she trails off. She's sad about her son and his wife going to travel with the circus (they literally ran away with the circus), although she's still not as sad as the Bellringer, who has wept every day since she found out. Lily's taking this hard, which is probably why she's nowhere around here anywhere to wish the travelers farewell. Sighing, the Warrior continues, saying, "Since Caleb and Cynthia left, I've been....feeling the need to do something, y'know? I wish my babies hadn't grown up..."
Emyuil walks slowly out to the entry, having seen DoraRose and the Abbot preparing to leave. He's retrieved his sword, just in case, and seems intent on accompanying them. "Room for one more?" he asks casually, his relatively at-ease demeanor partially concealing the same cooped up feelings that DoraRose already expressed.
Benar guides Dora back towards the carts which are now all lined up and ready to depart, "Sadly that ... is one of the facts of life. We all wish someone in our lives hadn't grown up. I wish Cynthia was still the young charming lady she was who wanted to learn how to sing and dance... or my other adoptive son. He's a giant monitor lizard now, I can't exactly hold him in my lap and read him stories anymore." he pats Dora's arm and smiles at her, "But we can enjoy the fact they are happy and I do think they will be very glad and no doubt stay in touch." he looks up at Emyuil and smiles, "Of course I always have room for more friends and we are about ready to leave."
DoraRose covers her face with a paw. "Oooh, Zarok! Why'd you have to go off and mention him? I miss him as a Dibbun, too. Phooey." She smiles at her brother, eyes twinkling. "Well, I dunno," she teases, "what if the Abbey gets attacked by rabid carrots? Who will protect everybeast?"
Emyuil laughs. "I'm sure the Abbeybeasts can handle it if there're not too many of 'em," he says, winking. "But cabbages may be an issue...Ever seen a cabbage on the hunt?"
Benar exclaims, "It's ok we harvested them all already! Now then," he starts for the gates and heads out onto the road and turns north as the carts start to follow. The guards run past to fan out and scout as the abbot heads up towards the woods, "It's quite nice to be out and about for once, it always seems I rarely get to leave the abbey. it is nice to walk through the woods sometimes"
DoraRose giggles, then goes to shove her brother. Running away, she slides to a stop beside the Abbot and pretends to be mature. "Aye, it is nice....I do like being able to come out here and not having to worry about invading lunatics or whatever." She snuggles the neck of her cloak up higher. "Er, does anybeast have a spare scarf I can borrow? I forgot to grab mine." She'll blame her brother if asked.
Emyuil runs out next to his sister after almost falling over, not from the shove, but from laughter. "Yeah, you left it in the gatehouse. When I went to see if you were in, you'd left it there." He tosses it to her.
Benar shakes his head, "Sorry Dora, I only brought one, I'd say you could borrow mine but it seems your brother has saved the day," he looks forwards at the trees as we approach them, "It does make a change to be outside shopping for once instead of fighting off evil beasts intent on murdering me."
DoraRose grabs her pretty orange scarf and wraps it around her throat by folding it in half, draping the double layer around her neck, and stuffing the tail through the loop. "Thanks, you're a lifesaver." She seems genuinely happy, and she goes to link arms with the Abbot and her brother. "Well, if you weren't such an important, special beast, you wouldn't have this problem!" Taking a deep breath of Autumn air, she adds, "But in all seriousness, it is wonderful to not have to worry about making sure that neither you nor anybeast dies."
Emyuil nods in agreement, linking arms with his sister dutifully. "Yeah......it's nice." He inhales the Autumn air as well, enjoying the crisp feeling of it in his lungs, exhaling slowly. "It's beautiful out here."
Benar laughs, "Me, special? Important? you are mistaking me for someone else Dora, I am just myself, Benar," he shakes his head as we walk through the carpet of thick golden and brown and red and yellow leaves of late autumn, Mossflower is just carpeted in the leaves as the little convoy from the abbey winds its way through the woods towards the spice market, "It is so nice to be out here... I miss the days when I had the run of Mossflower."
DoraRose laughs lightly. "Well, the crazies think you're important. And you're important to your friends." Letting the 2 go, she skips forward a few paces and, without slowing down, does a pair of very LilyMoore-like cartwheels. Landing on her feet, she grabs her hat from where it fell on the ground, twirls around, and smiles at her brother and friend. "Run of Mossflower? Whatever do you mean?" Was he in charge of the woodlands?
Emyuil snorts at DoraRose's burst of agility. "Haven't seen you do that in a while," he notes, mirth lighting up his eyes briefly. He listens intently to Benar, curious as to his explanation.
Benar claps Dora's antics as he walks along, kicking up leaves as he strolls along, "When i was young, I was a pretty wild squirrel. Mother let me roam free around mossflower, from camp willow to the abbey to the market place... from tree to tree I wandered and scampered and explored every place there was to see in Mossflower."
DoraRose smiles as she listens, still walking backwards and managing to not run into anything. "Wow....Mossflower was really safe back then, huh? No wonder you get so upset every time some lunatic comes to try and take over the area." She looks at her brother. "I wish Tuscani was that safe; if we had gone wandering, we could've been captured and sold into slavery."
"Aye," Emyuil says grimly, nodding slightly. "Surprised we both made it to Mossflower honestly, when we came here. I mean, we weren't exactly helpless then, but the odds were certainly against us..." Shaking off the thoughts of those days, he continues. "Anyways, I wonder how things are back there now."
Benar smiles "Mossflower was quiet, and peaceful, the north was the real dangerous place, Ruingate, city of slavery and vermin was a thing back then before it imploded on itself," he shakes his head, "But Mossflower itself was quiet, peaceful, few would dare the wrath of the abbey or its protectors."
DoraRose sighs. "Tuscani is probably like it always was, if not worse....I wish the freaks that keep coming knew about our wrath." Sighing, she yelps and ducks as a Sparra flies close to her head and crashes into a big pile of leaves. "Butterclaw?" A mumble comes from within the leaf pile.
"We should visit someda--" Emyuil is interrupted when he nearly takes a sparrow to the head, throwing himself aside when DoraRose yelps. Standing up again, he glances at the leaf pile. "Eh?"
Benar watches the sudden sparra with amusement and turns off the main path, heading down the winding, small path toward the spice market, the convoy following them, "Well at least we made it here with all these trade goods unmolested. What say we get to trading I have quite the list."
Butterclaw appears from the leaves! "Lilyfriend asked for specialrope. I gofly findsome!" And off he flutters. "Hey, wait, I didn't--UNGH, come back!" Dora chases after the sparrow because obviously. She'll head back to Redwall with the rest of everyone.
Benar laughs as Dora races off and shakes his head, "Well i guess she is busy," he holds up his list, "So Emyuil, shall we head out and see what we can find? herbs, spices, nothing that exciting."
Emyuil heads off after his sister. "Y'whatnow?" he calls out as he sprints off in her wake, figuring Benar has enough company what with the rest of the convoy being there.
~*END*~
