Clearing
This clearing is reminiscent to the meadows to the south of Redwall Abbey, yet strangely different in its unusual silence. No birds seem to banter in the trees surrounding its tall grasses on three sides. The well-traveled road to the west is barren, at the moment. Mossflower looms silently to the east, north, and south.
Gorvenalus walks into the woods, nothing with him but a knapsack and he has his traveling cloak on. His mission is to find his friend he hasn’t seen in a few days and he was starting to worry.
Minsc would of been back most likely yesterday but he ran into a small problem, a group of small problems. About half a dozen rats with green paint on them, they have spears and seem to think it’s funny the hamster is their captive.
They are not the only ones.
From the tree line a figure sits perfectly still, watching the group with unblinking eyes while hidden in the bushes. A smile spreads across reptilian scales.
Patience is the only virtue this creature has as it sits, and waits for the first opportunity to make some new 'friends' of her own.
Gorvenalus frowns and hides behind a tree as he watches the rats and picks up a stone, he tosses it aiming to knock one of the rats out if he can.
Minsc glares hate at the rats, one of them starts to head over to a campfire and gets knocked out with the rock, making a couple others go check on them. So that leaves 3 rats guarding the hamster.
The viper's eyes widen. She follows the path of the stone back to its source. A beaver? She scowls. Beavers were neither tasty nor fluffy enough to keep as a pet. %r %r Hamsters however... The snake licks her chops. He's a little thin but Redwall beasts are seasons with all their fancy food. He would be the perfect desert to her rat dinner...
The snake keeps low, slithering out of her hiding place and through the grass, inching her way on her belly towards the camp. The rats may have trouble seeing Tulip but the beavery should be able to see her just fine...
Gorvenalus has been trying to hide from the rats, he then seems the snake and holds in a yelp as he backs away. “How to do this..." He says quietly to himself and tries to slip closer to Minsc when the rats looks away. He gets behind Minsc and goes to untie him as quickly as he can.
Minsc starts to say something when the 3 rats think they see something move and 2 go closer, sadly to the snake. Minsc sighs and then feels the ropes loosen and goes quiet, not yet asking whom is there.
Sadly, for the rats. "Peek-a-boo." She says with a smile before snapping her jaws at the nearest rat. Those fangs are not just for show...
Gorvenalus quickly gets the rest of the rope loose and whispers “Follow me quietly my son." He finds a path that leads close to the river.
The two rats freeze, one gets ate as his buddy stands there as if not believeing what just happen. The other 4, including one that just woke to rub his head soon see the snake and panic starts. Meanwhile Minsc follows the beaver down the path that was chosen "What are you doing in the woods?!"
The snake shakes the rat as she chomps down into his chest and belly, until his frantic kicking stops. She lets the rat drop to the ground, to be dinner later. The more she can kill here, the better she eats later.
She scans the four rats still standing, looking for the plumpest and fattest of them to chase down first before they scatter to the far winds. Out of the corner of her eye she sees the two woodlanders trying to make a break for it. "OY!" She shouts, curling her tail around the rat she had just killed, "Where do you think you are going with my dessssert!" She chucks the rat's limp body like rag doll at the departing woodlanders.
Gorvenalus frowns and only has one reply “Just run Minsc!!!" The river is close as he starts to jump in, but stops as he makes sure the hamster is beside him.
Minsc does run, he barely avoids being hit with one of the rats, a rather fat ray faints and that leaves 3 who..well they scream and run in circles, two bump into each other and one climbs a tree. The hamster frowns "Wait..not the river, no way, I can’t swim!"
The frantic screams of the rats warms Tulip's heart. "Oh, look how cute you all are. I jusst want to gobble you all /up/." And so she does. She tries to circle around the two bumbling rats, squeezing them together to eat them both at her leisure...
The two rats she circles around soon die, one rat still lives as he watches from the tree, and one is still passed out for now.
Gorvenalus looks at the river and frowns, he grabs Minsc “Hold your breath" He then gives him a moment and dives.
Minsc quickly takes a breath and finds himself under water, this is not his idea of a get away plan as he holds onto the beaver and holds his breath at the same time, he will be fine...for a couple minutes.
The woodlanders are spared the grizzly scene, but the remaining rat is given a full show of the snake making a terrible glutton of herself on his friends. One bulge under her scales quickly becomes two, two quickly becomes three as the adder devours one unconcious rat. A forth appears as the snake swallows the slain rat.
The fat, juicy rat that fainted... she saves for last, hoisting him high above her head, she laughs, drunk with her own greed and glut, "Waky waky Mr. Rat. It issss time to join your friendssss." And she drops him into her maw, devouring him...
Gorvenalus meanwhile gets Minsc and himself further downstream before he resurfaces and helps the hamster to shore. “Are you alright?"
First there is the rat in the tree that looks like he is having a nightmare, wait he is as he does the smart thing and stays in the tree. The last rat wakes to a nightmare himself as he sees the snakes mouth and falls into it as food!
Minsc coughs and shivers and would normally slap someone, but this is a beast he knew as Abbot once, he coughs "NO...but I am alive."
Alas, she doesn't have any venom left to put him quickly out of his misery. Tulip just gobbles him down, slurping up his tail like a stray noodle. Afterwards Tulip let's out a content sigh. She looks back to survey the damage done to her figure, feeling slightly ill. "I think... (urp) four wasss my limit..." She begins to move, cringing from the belly ache of over stuffing herself with vermin. "I jusst w-want to find a nice ... s-ssunny rock..." Slowly the snake begins to inch her way away from the vermin camp, stopping to glare up in the tree. "Well... I sssupose there is alwaysss room for one more..."
With great effort and care the bloated snake wraps herself around the base of the tree, resting her head on her tail, unblinking eyes still staring up at the rat as she falls asleep.
Gorvenalus is downstream with the hamster "Let us..get to the abbey" He starts to walk that direction.
Minsc looks back where the snake is, he has an urge to slay it but just follows the beaver. The rat in the tree whimpers and holds his knees to his chest and rocks back and forth in the tree, he may try and run away later but it was hard enough to climb the tree, let alone get down easily.
Tulip slumbers soundly, knowing that when she awakens from her rat glut endured coma that there will still be a rat waiting up there for her to gobble up.
Gorvenalus gets within sight of Redwall and smiles, he turns to hug Minsc, if he can
Minsc allows the hug and steps back “That could of been dangerous and shouldn’t you be at the abbey writing or something Abb...I mean Brother Gorvenalus”
Gorvenalus answers "Looking for you, you been missing a week and have not spoken to me or been around the abbey. I worry is all." He frowns "Winter is soon, and I rather you not wander about then"
Minsc says, "I...wont, I just don’t know where I rather stay yet"
Gorvenalus sighs "For now the abbey for a good meal, maybe a bath and then a long chat." He heads to the gates and soon is seen going in, assuming he is followed.
Minsc sighs and follows the old beaver, he too soon enters the abbey.
