RW Abbey: Path by Great Hall

The massive stone structure of Redwalls Abbeys Western Wall of the Great Hall loams up beside a small dirt path. The red-standstones of the abbey are worn with the weight of seasons they carry. But remain firm and strong, the centerpiece of the abbeys grounds. Upon looking up, roofs and different levels of the abbey may be picked out. Even from the side, the great hall strikes an impressive figure in the abbey. The height and width stretches up and beyond your sights almost. Off to one side of the path are the orchards and gardens of the abbeybeasts.

[It's late summer!]

LilyMoore the mouse. Chud the otter.

Chud heads out of the orchard toward the path by Great Hall. He whistles a slightly melancholy tune to himself as he strides into a shaded area and sits down with a satisfied sigh.

LilyMoore has been crying in the Garden of the Late Rose. She really misses Zork. especially since she had to tell Marek earlier. It broke her heart all over again. Now she's walking along the path, trying to find somewhere else to be. She has a journal in her arms. She has yet to notice the otter. She is so sad.

Chud looks up at Lily, noticing the redness of her eyes and general downcast aspect. He debates catching her attention, and decides to go for it. He whistles to her.

LilyMoore looks up and spots the otter. After a moments hesitation, she trudges over to him. "hi."

"Sup," Chud says with an amiable enough nod. "Y' look like you're feelin' down, lass. Y'wanna talk about it?"

LilyMoore sits beside him and hugs her legs close to her chest. "My friend, Zork....d....died a few d.....days a...ago...." She wipes a tear from her cheek and brushes the cover of her journal. It's cover is a swirl of many colours, and it looks homemade.

Chud gently reaches out a paw to put around her if she lets him. "Zork, eh? I fought in battle with him once, bringing some supplies on a cart to Ferravale. He was a good beast. Sorry f'yer loss." After this, he lets her talk.

LilyMoore allows the paw around her as she sniffs. "I....knew about it....that it was.....gonna happen, but....I'm....still....*hic* sad, an'......I rang....rang the bell....to call b....beasts to the....the Hall, an'....an' I didn't even know...an' why did he have to die??"

"Don't really know," Chud says. "It must've been his time to go home. A wise beast once told me that to a well-organized mind, death is but the next adventure..."

LilyMoore furrows her brow. That.....doesn't seem to be very comforting to her. "Really...? But that doesn't help those left behind....." She opens the journal to a childish drawing of her and Zork making daisy chains.

"Well, we'll all be together in the end, won't we?" Chud replies. "Just takes a while to catch up, but we meet up in the end, aye?"

LilyMoore stares at the drawing as she says, "We'll....I think we'll all go to the Dark Forest one day. Is that what you mean...?"

"I think that it ain't so dark in there," Chud says by way of explanation. "I think we'll all just be there together. An' happy. Y'get what I'm saying?"

LilyMoore nods, but still looks miserable. "I.....guess so....." a tear trickles down her nose, but she wipes it off before it can mess up her book.

Chud reaches around to hug Lily on impulse. "What I'm sayin' is, he's safe. He's not in pain. He's probably happy, or he's mad because we're all moping around over him. Zork wouldn't want us to be so messed up that he's gone. So the best way to honor him is to keep our heads held high and carry on, do ya kennit?"

LilyMoore allows the hug as she looks up at his face. "Really? I want to, but.....I'm still so sad." She sniffs and wipes her eyes again. "W....we w....were g....gonna make a.....p....pie after lunch that day, and now I.....I c....can't ev....even l....look at a pie w....withou.....without c....cr....crying...."

"Don't cry," Chud says. "Just remember him every time you see a pie. And be happy, because you're keeping him alive through thought. There was an old funeral right in another language somebeast taught me. It translates to, 'I'm living, you're not, I remember you, so you are eternal.' Simple as that. You have Zork where it matters, and that's inside. We carry his memory with us every day. But it's not a burden, it's a gift. To be touched by the life of another beast."

"Don't think of what could've been. Think of what /has/ been. Instead of remembering all the things you didn't get a chance to do," Chud clarifies, "Think of what a full life Zork lived, and all the things you /did/ do."

LilyMoore smiles slightly. "I understand." She fiddles with her bracelet for a few minutes. It's very well made and braided bits of colored strands of colored silver metal all intricately woven into successively larger braids until the bracelet is formed. The woven bracelet looks like it took a while to make. A pattern of red, green, silver go along the bracelet and keeps repeating the same color pattern over it. She grins and goes to give the otter a quick hug. "Thank you! I wanna go tell Momma. Later!" and she runs off, feeling less sad than she did before.

Chud returns the hug and smiles as he watches the lass go. "No problem," he calls after her. "Good deed for the day...done," he says to himself with a twitch of his whiskers. He leans back, deciding it's time for a nap.
